Lahoris buy Rs54 crores worth of kites, string in three days

With Basant being celebrated in Lahore after 18 years, kite and string sales worth over Rs54 crores have been reported over the past three days.

According to the Kite Flying Association, over 500,000 kites were sold in the city on Tuesday alone.

While high demand is keeping craftsmen across Punjab burning the midnight oil as they produce high-quality, visually appealing and affordable kites and strings for local markets, Peshawar’s historic YakaToot Bazaar is also operating at full capacity to ship products to Lahore for the Feb 6-8 festival.

The festival of Basant, a traditional spring celebration historically marked by mass kiteflying, is returning to Punjab after nearly two decades of legal restrictions.

Basant, which signifies the arrival of spring, traditionally involved families and communities flying colorful kites in the skies.

The festival had been banned due to public safety concerns, particularly accidents caused by sharp kite strings.

Under the Punjab Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, kite flying has now been officially permitted with strict safety and regulatory measures.

These include the prohibition of dangerous materials such as metal or chemical-coated strings, and the mandatory registration of kite makers and sellers.

Authorities have scheduled the three-day Basant festival with rules aimed at preventing injuries and fatalities that previously led to the festival’s ban.

  • ‘Unbelievable sadness’; Bill Gates’ ex-wife on her husband’s Epstein files affair

‘Unbelievable sadness’; Bill Gates’ ex-wife on her husband’s Epstein files affair

Melinda French Gates has said that her ex-husband, Bill Gates, must answer questions arising from newly released documents connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as fresh details from the files have reignited public scrutiny.

In emails included in the documents, Epstein claimed that Gates had asked him to help arrange meetings with married women and to obtain medication to treat a sexually transmitted infection. Epstein also alleged that Gates wanted to give that medication to French Gates without her knowledge. One email attributed to Epstein described his anger over requests to delete messages related to the alleged infection and other details.

A spokesperson for Bill Gates rejected the claims, “These claims are absolutely absurd and completely false. The only thing these documents demonstrate is Epstein’s frustration that he did not have an ongoing relationship with Gates and the lengths he would go to entrap and defame.”

Speaking in an interview on NPR’s Wild Card podcast, Melinda French Gates said the disclosures were difficult for her to revisit. “For me, it’s personally hard whenever those details come up, right? Because it brings back memories of some very, very painful times in my marriage,” she said.

The comments follow the release of around three million pages of Epstein’s personal communications by the US Justice Department. Bill Gates is among several prominent figures referenced in the material.

Melinda said that she was not in a position to respond to the allegations mentioned in the files. “Whatever questions remain there of what I can’t even begin to know all of it, those questions are for those people and for even my ex-husband,” she emphasised. “They need to answer to those things, not me.”

In the interview, French Gates also said the latest documents filled her with “unbelievable sadness.” She also referred to the impact of Epstein’s actions on his victims. “I think we’re having a reckoning as a society, right? No girl should ever be put in the situation that they were put in by Epstein and whatever was going on with all of the various people around him,” she said.

French Gates, who finalised her divorce from Gates in 2021, has previously said his association with Epstein was one factor among others that led her to leave the marriage and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Reflecting on her response to the revelations, she said: “I’m able to take my own sadness and look at those young girls and say, ‘My God, how did that happen to those girls?’ At least for me, I’ve been able to move on in life”.

PSL sells international media rights at record price for next season

Pakistan Super League (PSL) has announced the successful sale of its international media rights for the upcoming season, calling the development a major step in the league’s global expansion.

For the 11th edition of the tournament, Walee Technologies secured the one year long global media rights for all regions excluding India after submitting the highest bid. The company’s offer exceeded the reserve price set by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), leading to the formal award of the rights.

Compared to the previous rights cycle across the same regions, the value of the deal increased by 149 percent. Officials described the sharp rise as a clear sign of the PSL’s growing brand strength and increasing international reach.

HBL PSL 11 will begin on March 26 and conclude on May 3, 2026. The upcoming season with two new teams will also expand the league’s city footprint with Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium set to host matches for the first time, marking the city’s return to top level cricket action.

Former NA deputy speaker Qasim Suri says he now drives Uber in US

Qasim Khan Suri, the former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, says he is now driving for Uber in the United States (US) due to financial difficulties after leaving Pakistan.

Suri, a senior member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and long-time political worker associated with the ideology of party chairman Imran Khan, shared his situation in a discussion with Ali Hasnain Malik “Here, I am certainly facing financial hardships.

I never imagined I would have to do the kind of work I am doing now – I am driving Uber” he said, adding that he chose honesty over theft.

Suri remained explicit about his political identity, stating that he is a political worker aligned with Imran Khan’s ideology and continues to stand with that vision.

He framed his current struggle within the larger context of what he called cruelty and injustice facing Pakistan, particularly pointing to the legal challenges against Imran Khan and his family.

According to Suri, he had once held a responsible position with the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in Islamabad, but he said he never accumulated personal wealth from it. “By the grace of Allah, I did not even own a flat there. I lived my life with dignity and modesty,” he stated.

He also recalled that, prior to 2018, he was able to host senior political figures such as Imran Khan and Dr. Arif Alvi at his home in Quetta, describing himself as a middle-class Pakistani who lived “with dignity and earned [his] living honestly.”

Suri said that although he sleeps peacefully, “the struggle burns in my heart like fire,” underscoring his ongoing emotional and political commitment.

  • Musk slammed for calling Spain’s PM ‘tyrant’ after the country plans to curb social media use by minors

Musk slammed for calling Spain’s PM ‘tyrant’ after the country plans to curb social media use by minors

Just a day after he was castigated on social media for having ties to Jeffrey Epstein, Elon Musk is being slammed for calling Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez a “tyrant” after Spain announced plans to restrict social media access under 16 and tighten controls on hateful and harmful online content.

The exchange began after Sánchez said his government was preparing measures that would ban social media use for children under 16 and increase accountability for technology companies. Speaking this week, the Spanish prime minister said action was required to protect minors from what he described as a “digital wild west”.

“Social media is a failed state where laws are ignored and crimes are tolerated,” Sánchez said, arguing that governments could no longer allow children to navigate online platforms without safeguards.

Musk, the owner of X, responded on the platform by posting: “Dirty Sánchez is a tyrant and a traitor to the people of Spain.”

Sánchez also criticised Musk for using X to “amplify disinformation” related to Spain’s decision last week to regularise the status of around 500,000 undocumented workers and asylum seekers. He noted that Musk himself was a migrant.

Spain’s proposal comes amid a shift across Europe toward stricter regulation of social media platforms. Greece is preparing to announce a ban on social media use for children under 15. Britain and France are also considering similar measures, while Australia last year became the first country to block access to social media platforms for children under 16.

Sánchez said Spain was working with five other European countries in what he called a “coalition of the digitally willing” to coordinate regulation across borders. His office did not name the countries or provide further details.

At the World Governments Summit in Dubai, Sánchez said: “Our children are exposed to a space they were never meant to navigate alone. We will no longer accept that. We will protect them from the digital wild west.”

The debate has intensified following scrutiny of Musk’s artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, developed by his startup xAI and integrated into X. Researchers said the tool generated an estimated three million sexualised images over an 11-day period after the rollout of an image editing feature that allowed users to alter images of real people using text prompts.

According to a report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate, around 23,000 of the images appeared to depict children. The report said the images were generated at an average rate of 190 per minute. It did not specify how many images were created without consent.

Several countries moved to ban Grok following the outcry. Sánchez said Spanish prosecutors would explore possible legal infractions linked to Grok, as well as platforms including TikTok and Instagram.

The issue has also triggered developments in France, where prosecutors confirmed that the French headquarters of X had been raided by the Paris cybercrime unit as part of an investigation into alleged cybercrime. Prosecutors said Musk and X’s former chief executive, Linda Yaccarino, had been summoned for voluntary questioning. Yaccarino resigned from the company last year.

Musk responded to the raid by calling it “a political attack”.

Online reaction to Musk’s remarks about the Spanish prime minister was swift. One user wrote: “Why would Elon Musk oppose banning minors from social media, where they’re clearly unsafe and more vulnerable? Oh wait…” Another said: “Dirty? Sánchez is not on Epstein’s list, you are.”

A third comment read: “Literally not one negative point by the Spanish PM. Yet Musk calls him a tyrant because his criminal activity is being threatened.” A Spain-based user posted: “I’m in Spain, we mostly think you’re the tyrant.”

Other reactions questioned Musk’s role in shaping debate. “Why does Elon condone fuelling hate, misinformation and divisiveness, and against protecting children from its effects?” one user asked, while another wrote: “And what gives you the right to speak on behalf of the Spanish people?”

Makeup artist Ayesha Butt has opened up about casting couch experiences she faced while trying to build a career in Pakistan’s media industry.

She recently appeared on a Youtube Podcast, where the host questioned her about her bold image on social media. In response, Ayesha shared the reasons that shaped her public persona and discussed her struggles in the industry.

“I went to Karachi to work in showbiz, where producers told me, ‘We will give you work after you sleep with us.’ Unfortunately, this is true. I did multiple photoshoots, stills, and web series, but they were shelved or my work was cut simply because I refused their offers.”

“I worked in the drama serial Sotan. I have worked with Agha Shiraz, Saleem Mairaj, and Sohail Sameer. Eight years ago, when I came, I was only offered casting couch by big names of the industry. Photographer Munna Mushtaq asked me to sleep with him, after which I left the media industry,” she added.

While talking about her experience with an actor from the popular drama Meray Paas Tum Ho, she revealed, “Besides that, there was an actor from Meray Paas Tum Ho. I don’t remember his name; he played Danish’s friend in the drama. When I entered his office, he took off his shalwar and asked me to get physical with him.”

“He also has a very beautiful wife from the showbiz industry. He chased me as well and told me that if I wanted to flourish in showbiz, I had to sleep with them. After that, I left the media industry and joined a salon. I continued working there and focused on building my career through hard work,” she stated.

Ayesha Butt, who has around 400,000 followers across social media platforms, remains known for her bold online content. She also appeared in the drama serial “Sotan”, but later stepped away from the industry.

Security forces kill 197 terrorists in Balochistan crackdown

The number of terrorists killed in clearance operations across Balochistan has increased to 197, as security forces continue ‘mop-up’ actions in Nushki district and other areas of the province.

The operations follow a series of coordinated terrorist attacks carried out across Balochistan on Saturday.

In Nushki, armed men targeted multiple government installations, including a police station, judicial complex, police lines, deputy commissioner’s office and an FC camp, and set several government buildings on fire.

While Nushki town has now been cleared and bazaars have reopened after three days, security forces are continuing search and clearance operations in the mountainous areas of the district, officials told a private media outlet.

District police officials said that at least four more terrorists were killed during the latest clearance actions.

They also confirmed that the counterterrorism department suffered casualties during the weekend attacks; however, there was no official confirmation regarding the number or identities of those martyred.

Meanwhile, reports of terrorist attacks in Awaran also emerged, though no loss of life was immediately reported.

Reports quoted security forces that they are also carrying out operations in the Washuk area, where terrorists had attacked over the weekend and set fire to a police station and a Nadra office.

Separately, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Tahir said the Balochistan police had rendered unparalleled sacrifices for the restoration of peace and protection of lives in the province, with many officers and personnel attaining martyrdom while thwarting the designs of terrorists.

Paying tribute to the fallen policemen, the IGP said that lasting peace in Balochistan can only be achieved through close cooperation between the public and security forces, emphasising that the police and the people stand united against terrorism.

He made these remarks during visits to several police facilities, including Sariab Police Station, New Sariab Police Station, Police Training College, Smart Police Station, Manzoor Tareen Shaheed Police Station and Khaliq Shaheed Police Station, where he reviewed security arrangements and overall performance.

Later, the IGP visited the Anti-Terrorism Force (ATF) headquarters, where he met officers and personnel and was briefed on operational challenges. “Pakistan has received the invitation for the upcoming talks between Iran and the United States,” FO Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said while responding to a query Tuesday.

Reports quoted sources as saying that Pakistan’s participation was seen as crucial to defusing tensions as Islamabad had been quietly working to facilitate the talks.
