    Intelligence agency thwarts major terror attack on PAF base: Report

    One of the country’s premium intelligence agencies has thwarted a major terror plan masterminded by a commander of the Afghanistan-based terror group Fitna al-Khawarij, aimed at carrying out a deadly assault on the strategically important Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Masroor Airbase in Karachi, The News reported today (Friday). 

    As per the report, the plan was led by a high-profile FAK commander who is already wanted in multiple terrorism cases. The plot involved nine highly trained terrorists, including five Afghan nationals.

    The terrorists, who had recently infiltrated Pakistan from Afghanistan, planned to infiltrate the airbase through a pre-selected entry point, take control of the facility, destroy aircraft and infrastructure, and hold the base for as long as possible. They aimed to cause maximum damage and engage in a prolonged gun battle until death, the report claims.

    The operation was reportedly under the direct supervision of FAK’s top leadership based in Afghanistan and involved nearly thirteen months of planning. The terrorists had taken up accommodation near the airbase and carried out extensive surveillance of the area to prepare for the attack.

    The report further claimed that the agency launched a swift, covert, and coordinated operation the moment the assaulters were about to begin the final phase of their plot, arresting the suspects from various locations nationwide, as the intelligence agency had been closely monitoring their movements. 

    The agency crippled a key FAK terror network involved in several previous attacks, including the November 2024 assault on Chinese engineers at Liberty Textile Mills in Karachi’s SITE area. The same FAK commander captured in the current operation is believed to have masterminded that attack before fleeing to Afghanistan.

    Authorities describe him as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) expert, trained in Afghanistan and a former militant alongside the Afghan Taliban during their conflict with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) forces.

    Preliminary investigations suggest the involvement of hostile intelligence agencies, allegedly providing funding and equipping terrorist elements in a bid to destabilize Pakistan. Officials also referenced a similar terror plot foiled last October in which FAK and the hostile agencies had conspired to sabotage a major international event in Islamabad.

    Despite such threats, Pakistan’s armed forces, intelligence services, and law enforcement agencies remain steadfast in their mission to protect the nation. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to rooting out terrorism in all its forms and safeguarding national security through coordinated, relentless vigilance.

    Sarfaraz Ahmed hints at possible return to PSL

    Quetta Gladiators’ Director and former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has hinted at the possibility of making a comeback in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) if given the opportunity.

    In an exclusive interview with a cricket website, Sarfaraz reflected on Quetta Gladiators’ previous season, stating that while the team performed well and qualified for the playoffs, they were unable to progress further. However, he believes that this season’s squad is stronger and has more firepower.

    “Last year, our performance was good as we managed to qualify for the playoffs, but unfortunately, we couldn’t advance further. This season, the team is more balanced and has additional firepower,” he said.

    He praised the recent performances of Finn Allen and Hassan Nawaz and highlighted the presence of Mark Chapman, Sean Abbott, and Faheem Ashraf in the squad.

    “If you look at Chapman’s performance in New Zealand over the last two to three years, it has been excellent. He is also familiar with Pakistani conditions as he has toured here for the past three years,” Sarfaraz noted.

    Speaking about his love for cricket, Sarfaraz admitted that it is difficult for someone who has played all his life to stay away from the game.

    “Cricket is a passion that never fades. Someone who has played the sport for so long finds it challenging to stay away. Although I am currently serving as the team director for Quetta Gladiators, my heart still beats for cricket. If given the opportunity, I could be seen in PSL action once again,” he said.

    Sarfaraz clarified that he has not yet retired from cricket and still aims to play for Pakistan.

    “I haven’t announced my retirement yet. When a player is away from the game, it naturally feels disappointing. However, every cricketer has to step away at some point. Until that moment arrives, I want to play as much cricket as possible and perform at my best. When I feel the right time has come, I will announce my decision,” he added.

    Regarding the criticism over receiving a high salary as a mentor from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Sarfaraz responded that judgments should be based on work and performance rather than personal opinions.

    “I have always maintained that criticism should be directed at performance. People should evaluate a person based on their work rather than unnecessary speculation. Unfortunately, we tend to focus on the wrong aspects,” he concluded.

    The former captain led Pakistan to two International Cricket Council (ICC) trophies during his career.

    He is most famous for captaining Pakistan to win the Champions Trophy, but one of his victories often goes unnoticed: leading Pakistan’s junior team to the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2006, where they lifted the trophy. The opponent in that crucial match was India.

    The Sultans’ owner also voiced his frustration over the PCB’s decision to shift their opening home game to Karachi despite the tradition of starting the season in Multan.

    “This time, they shifted our first home match to Karachi, even though it always starts in Multan. There, we engage with our sponsors, our team, and the people. And you see, Multan’s stadium is always full, so our fans are very engaged,” he said.

    “We wanted to conduct our practice matches and activities there before shifting. But the PCB did not allow us that either,” he added.

    Tourist family, pilot killed in ‘tragic’ NY helicopter crash

    Six people including three children were killed after a sightseeing helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York on Thursday, sparking a major water rescue operation, authorities said.

    The crash killed all those onboard the aircraft: the pilot and a family from Spain. Two of the victims were initially taken to a hospital, but later succumbed to their injuries.

    “At this time, all six victims have been removed from the water. And sadly, all six victims have been pronounced deceased,” Mayor Eric Adams told a briefing, after earlier calling it a “heartbreaking and tragic crash.”

    Officials have yet to release the identities of the victims, but widespread US media reports identified one of the people aboard the helicopter as Agustin Escobar, a Spanish executive at global technology company Siemens.

    The chopper’s landing skids were seen protruding from the river beside a tunnel vent as several boats clustered around the impact site.

    Police from both New York and New Jersey, which is on the opposite side of the river from Manhattan, responded to the scene along with fire department vessels.

    The NBC4 channel reported that its own helicopter was unable to take off because of weather conditions, with the weather in New York on Thursday gusty under thick cloud cover.

    A witness told AFP it appeared like the helicopter’s rotor blade “shattered in the sky.”

    “And after it shattered, then we saw the helicopter just spiral… And then it just crashed into the water just like that,” said fashion designer Belle Angel.

    The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement it was Bell 206 helicopter.

    “The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate,” it added.

    President Donald Trump took to social media to call the crash “terrible.”

    “The footage of the accident is horrendous. God bless the families and friends of the victims,” he wrote on Truth Social.


    – ‘Heartbreaking’ –

    The river is a busy shipping channel and the scene of a dramatic 2009 incident when a US Airways jet safely landed in the water. All 155 people on board escaped alive in an event dubbed “Miracle on the Hudson.”

    The river is as deep as 200 feet (60 meters) at points, and an AFP correspondent saw what appeared to be floatation devices deployed on the helicopter’s skids.

    The average temperature of the river is 46 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius) at this time of year, according to the US Geological Survey.

    “Three adults and three children were on board a Bell 206 helicopter that had left from the downtown Skyport at just about 3 pm,” Adams said, adding that the tourists were a family from Spain.

    Police and fire service (FDNY) divers raced to pull survivors from the wreckage, he said.

    “NYPD divers pulled four people from the crash site, and FDNY Divers recovered an additional two. Immediate lifesaving measures were undertaken on the vessels at the scene, as well as the adjoining pier,” police commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

    “Four victims were pronounced dead on scene, and two more were removed to local area hospitals, where, sadly, both succumbed to their injuries.”

    The chopper took off around 3 pm, flying south before heading up the Manhattan shoreline to the George Washington Bridge, turning back towards the downtown Manhattan heliport, losing control and hitting the water near a Hoboken pier, Tisch said.

    The police commissioner said the aircraft was operated by New York Helicopter, which did not respond to a request for comment but lists the Bell 206 among its fleet.

    There have been around 30 helicopter crashes in New York since 1980, Brooklyn Borough President Mark Levine told reporters, calling for tighter restrictions on helicopter traffic in the city.
