More arrests as Turkey escalates crackdown over protests

Turkey intensified its crackdown over ongoing anti-government protests Friday, arresting the lawyer of the jailed Istanbul mayor and two more journalists in connection with the country’s biggest wave of unrest since 2013.

Nine days after the arrest and subsequent jailing of Istanbul’s popular opposition mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, thousands of demonstrators protested on the streets on Thursday night, despite a growing sense of fear.

Overnight, police raided more homes, with Imamoglu saying his lawyer Mehmet Pehlivan had been “detained on fictitious grounds,” in a post on X published via the mayor’s legal team.

“As if the coup against democracy was not enough, they cannot tolerate the victims defending themselves. The evil that a handful of incompetent people are inflicting on our country is growing,” he wrote.

    “Release my lawyer immediately!”

It was not immediately clear on what grounds Pehlivan had been detained but opposition broadcaster Halk TV said it was linked to allegations of “laundering assets originating from a crime”.

The Istanbul Bar Association meanwhile said 20 minors had been arrested between March 22-25 on charges of violating a ban on protests.

Of that number, 13 had been released but seven were still in custody, it said in a statement posted on X, indicating it was “closely following” the matter.

    Overseas criticism

Turkey’s repressive response to its worst bout of street unrest since 2013 has been sharply condemned by rights groups and drawn criticism from abroad.

In Washington, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio raised concerns over Ankara’s handling of the protests, and French President Emmanuel Macron denounced its “systematic attacks” on opposition figures and freedom of assembly.

Police also detained two Turkish women journalists in dawn raids on their homes, the Turkish Journalists’ Union (TGS) said on X.

“Another dawn raid. Two of our colleagues who were following the #Sarachane protests were detained,” it said, referring to the name of the district where Istanbul City Hall is located.

“Let journalists do their job! Stop these unlawful detentions!” the union said.

    ‘Arbitrary acts to silence journalists’

The move came just hours after the authorities released the last of 11 journalists arrested in dawn raids on Monday for covering the protests, among them AFP photographer Yasin Akgul.

“The decision to throw me in jail came even though my identity as a journalist was known, and evidence provided to prove it,” Akgul told AFP after he was freed on Thursday.

“I hope no other journalists will face a situation like this. But unfortunately, I fear that arbitrary acts to silence journalists and stop them from doing their job will continue in Turkey.”

The Turkish authorities had on Wednesday detained BBC journalist Mark Lowen who had been covering the protests, holding him for 17 hours before deporting him on grounds he posed “a threat to public order”, the broadcaster said.

In a statement late Thursday, Turkey’s communications directorate said Lowen had been deported “due to a lack of accreditation”.

In its first statement on the protests, Britain said it expected Ankara to ensure “the upholding of… the rule of law, including timely and transparent judicial processes”, a foreign ministry spokesperson said.

Also Thursday, Turkey’s broadcasting watchdog RTUK slapped a 10-day broadcast ban on the opposition TV channel Sozcu, pointing to alleged violations linked to incitement to “hatred and hostility”.

    ‘I’m scared’

During Thursday night’s protest, student demonstrators could be seen being rounded up by the police and taken away, an AFP correspondent said.

“We’re here for our rights but I’m scared,” a 21-year-old protester called Raftel told AFP, his words echoing the unease felt by many others as thousands of young demonstrators continue to flood Istanbul’s streets.

“There are some very serious illegal things going on here, young people have been beaten for days,” said Baturalp Akalin, 25, a rare protester with his face uncovered.

“We young people are on the streets of Istanbul to defend our country’s democratic rights.”

So far, more than 1,879 people have been detained since March 19, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Thursday.

  • Saima Qureshi shares the cutest school crush story

Saima Qureshi shares the cutest school crush story

Senior actress Saima Qureshi recently shared an adorable memory from her school days, recalling a silent crush that never turned into love.

While appearing on the comedy show Mazaq Raat, she opened up about how, as an eighth-grader, she secretly admired an older boy from the eleventh grade. “When I was young, I found comfort only by looking at boys,” she said playfully.

She revealed that every morning, the boy would stand at the corner of her street just to catch a glimpse of her. Over time, she started looking forward to seeing him too. “There was never any conversation between us, but we used to see each other from a distance,” she shared.

Sometimes, she would dress up just for that brief moment. “If by chance that boy didn’t come, my whole day would be sad,” she admitted.

Years later, she was surprised when the same man reached out to her on Instagram. He is now married and has children, but their connection had only ever been through stolen glances.

Talking about her career, Saima Qureshi revealed that she never planned to be in showbiz despite her parents being from the industry.

“I wanted to join the Pakistan Army, but that didn’t happen. I studied hotel management and started working in that field,” she said. However, fate had other plans. “While I was working in a hotel, famous dramatist Fatima Surayya Bajia asked me to act, and that’s how I accidentally entered the industry,” she recalled.

Speaking about the entertainment industry, she emphasised that success comes from talent, not looks.

“Beauty and good looks can give anyone a chance to work in showbiz, but they cannot support you forever,” she said. “If a person does not have emotions, feelings, and acting skills, they cannot survive in showbiz for long.”

According to Qureshi, the Pakistani television industry values hard work over appearance, and only those with true talent can last in the field.

  • VIDEO: Angry Indian anchor smashes TV on-air over Pant’s batting

VIDEO: Angry Indian anchor smashes TV on-air over Pant’s batting

A bizarre incident unfolded during a YouTube live session when a sports anchor smashed a television screen in pure anger, frustrated with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant’s performance against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2025 match.

Pant, who had already disappointed fans with a six-ball duck in the previous match against the Delhi Capitals (DC), once again failed to impress. With LSG comfortably placed to chase down SRH’s target, Pant managed 15 (15) before getting caught at short third, leaving fans and analysts unimpressed.

On Sports Tak’s live discussion, sports presenter Pankaj completely lost his cool over Pant’s failure. In a dramatic fit of rage, he threw an object at the TV screen, shattering it, and almost tossed a glass table in frustration. Veteran sports journalist Vikrant Gupta, who was also part of the discussion, could only offer a wry smile as Pankaj vented his anger.

“IPL is going on. He (Rishabh Pant) had his chance, but I’m telling you, he has become predictable. You cannot trust him. What sort of a captain is he? We don’t need a captain like him,” Pankaj fumed during the livestream.

Despite Pant’s struggles, LSG secured a five-wicket win. Speaking after the match, Pant expressed relief over the result.

“It is about not getting too high when you win and not getting too low when you lose. As a team, we can’t focus on uncontrollables. My mentor (Zaheer Khan) said to focus on controllable, and that is what I did. It was good to see the way Prince Yadav bowled, and Thakur was really good as well. (On Pooran batting at No. 3) I think we just want to give freedom to him. You have to give someone the charge when he is batting well, and he has batted brilliantly for us. The group is coming up nicely; we have not played our best so far but are happy to get a win,” Pant said.

LSG opted to bowl first, restricting SRH to 190/9 in their 20 overs. Shardul Thakur was the standout bowler for LSG, taking 4/34, while Avesh Khan, Prince Yadav, Digvesh Rathi, and Ravi Bishnoi each picked up a wicket.

For SRH, Travis Head, 47 (28), and Nitish Kumar Reddy, 32 (28), put up a 61-run partnership to stabilise the innings. Heinrich Klaasen 26 (17), Aniket Varma 36 (13), and captain Pat Cummins 18 (4) added crucial runs to push SRH to a competitive total.

During the run chase, LSG lost Aiden Markram early, but a 116-run partnership between Nicholas Pooran 70 (26) and Mitchell Marsh 52 (31) set the stage for an easy win. Abdul Samad 22* (8) provided the finishing touch, securing LSG’s victory with 23 balls to spare.

For SRH, Pat Cummins was the top bowler, picking up 2/29, but it wasn’t enough to stop LSG’s dominant performance.

While LSG fans celebrated the win, Pant’s performance remained a hot topic. The viral clip of the anchor’s outburst only added fuel to the debate, with fans divided over Pant’s captaincy and batting struggles.

It merits mention that Rishabh Pant is one of the most expensive players in IPL history, with a price of around 85 crore PKR.

  • Aaqib Javed backs Babar, Rizwan in ODI series against New Zealand

Aaqib Javed backs Babar, Rizwan in ODI series against New Zealand

Pakistan’s head coach Aaqib Javed is hopeful about his team’s chances in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting on Friday in Napier.

Speaking before the first game, Javed emphasized how important fast bowling will be in New Zealand’s conditions. He also expressed confidence that his experienced batters would perform well.

“The pitches here are similar to those in Australia and South Africa, where our fast bowlers dominated. If we can restrict them under 200, our experienced batting lineup, with Babar Azam and Rizwan back in ODIs, should secure good results,” Javed said.

One key decision was keeping Haris Rauf in the squad for the ODI series, as he has performed well in Australia and South Africa.

“Even though we lost in the T20Is here, Haris proved why he’s the best option in these conditions,” Javed added.

Javed also defended Pakistan’s current ODI setup, saying that despite concerns after the Champions Trophy, the team is well-balanced.

“We carried four senior batters—Babar, Rizwan, Abdullah Shafique, and Imam Ul Haq, because they provide stability. While we are making changes in T20s, our ODI setup is well-balanced,” he explained.

“We struggled on flat pitches in the Champions Trophy, but we have the right players for different conditions. Youngsters in T20s will develop further, especially after the PSL,” he concluded.

The first ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand will begin at 11 AM local time in Napier, which is 3 AM Pakistan time on Saturday, March 29.

  • ‘Hell will be filled with mostly women’; Fiza Ali gets slammed for controversial rant

‘Hell will be filled with mostly women’; Fiza Ali gets slammed for controversial rant

In a recent episode of Noor-e-Ramzan, actor-turned-host Fiza Ali shared her views on marriage, urging women to be obedient to their husbands and refrain from questioning them.

“Let me tell you, women, what irritates a man? A woman’s tongue,” she claimed, adding that as men work hard, women should remain submissive.

She went on to say, “A woman can never be stronger than a man. A woman was made out of a man’s rib, so she stays close to his heart—not try to get on his nerves and make him go crazy.”

Ali also linked women’s speech to their fate in the afterlife, saying, “Hell will be filled with mostly women because of their tongues.”

Her statements took an even more controversial turn when she criticised women for questioning their husbands, saying, “This is why men don’t want to go home! They only show love before marriage, and as soon as they are married, women start checking their pockets, searching for another woman’s hair, and questioning their husbands. Stop it! This is your auqat [status]?”

She also misrepresented the feminist slogan mera jism, meri marzi, claiming that women who chant it refuse to do household chores and expect their husbands to do them instead.

A caller, a working mother of three, challenged Ali’s views by sharing her struggle of providing for her family while facing abuse from her unemployed husband. In response, Ali insisted, “God has made your husband your boss, that is clear. You must give him his due respect. Try to bow down.”

Ali’s comments have sparked criticism for promoting outdated and harmful gender norms. Many argue that instead of holding men accountable for their actions, she is reinforcing the idea that women should endure mistreatment in silence.

  • Armed robbers gang-rape woman after tying up her husband

Armed robbers gang-rape woman after tying up her husband

A woman was reportedly gang-raped by armed robbers on Tuesday in Faisalabad’s Sandal Bar area after the robbers tied up her husband with a shalwar drawstring belt.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the couple was returning home from the Agriculture University Hostel on a motorcycle when two armed men stopped them on the Chak No. 62 JB Channan motorway bridge.

The armed men were described as one of average height, aged around 17–18 years with a skinny build, and the other around 25–26 years with a slim build; both were wearing shalwar kameez.

According to the FIR, the armed men stopped the couple at gunpoint and snatched Rs800 in cash, a mobile phone, and the woman’s identity card before taking the husband to a nearby sugarcane field, where they tied him up.

The suspects then also took the woman to the sugarcane field, and one of the robbers called a third accomplice on a motorcycle. The third suspect, described as tall and well-built, arrived at the scene.

“All three of them raped my wife one by one and then fled the scene,” the FIR read, noting that the victim’s husband initially searched for the suspects himself before reporting the incident to the police the next day, on Wednesday, via the emergency helpline.

Meanwhile, as per the authorities, the victim’s medical examination has been completed, and Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) samples have been sent for forensic analysis.

Police have launched a search operation after filing a case against unidentified suspects under robbery and sexual assault charges.

Geofencing of the crime scene led to the detention of three suspects, and further investigations are underway, as per the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).

The horrifying crime comes years after two robbers gang-raped a mother of two children on the motorway within the Gujjarpura police’s jurisdiction in September 2020.

The woman was driving to Gujranwala in her car when she was forced to stop at the Gujjarpura section of the motorway after running out of fuel.

According to reports, she immediately called a relative and sent him her location, who asked her to also dial the Motorway Police helpline—130—from which she reportedly received no response.

Meanwhile, two robbers approached the car, broke the window, and took the woman and her children to nearby bushes where they raped the mother repeatedly in front of the children. They also snatched her purse, which contained Rs100,000 in cash, one bracelet, car registration papers, and three Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards.

‘Life is in God’s hands’; Salman Khan remains defiant on death threats

During a recent event for his upcoming Eid release Sikandar, Khan addressed the threats, saying, “Life is in God’s hands. Whatever is written, will happen.”

He talked about the challenges of moving around with heavy security, saying, “Sometimes, taking so many people along becomes a problem.”

Last year, gunmen linked to the Bishnoi gang fired outside Khan’s Mumbai residence, with one bullet hitting his balcony. The Mumbai police later uncovered a plot to attack him on his way to his farmhouse.

Khan has reportedly received multiple threats and extortion messages, with Bishnoi demanding an apology for the infamous blackbuck hunting incident that happened in 1998.

Meanwhile, Salman Khan’s coming blockbuster Sikandar, directed by AR Murugadoss, is set for release on March 30, featuring an ensemble cast including Rashmika Mandanna and Kajal Aggarwal.

  • Copyright questions loom as ChatGPT’s Ghibli-style images go viral

Copyright questions loom as ChatGPT’s Ghibli-style images go viral

The release of the latest image generator on OpenAI’s ChatGPT has triggered a flood of online memes featuring images done in the style of Studio Ghibli, the Japanese studio behind classic animated films like “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Princess Mononoke.”

The virality of these images, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman even changing his profile picture on X to match the style, immediately raised questions about copyright infringement by the ChatGPT maker, which already faces lawsuits regarding the use of source material without permission.

Since the release on Wednesday, AI-generated images depicting Studio Ghibli versions of Elon Musk with US President Donald Trump, “The Lord of the Rings,” and even a recreation of the September 11 attacks have gone viral across online platforms.

On Thursday, the White House took part by posting on X a Ghibli-style image of a weeping alleged felon being handcuffed by a US immigration officer before her deportation.

Originally intended to be available on the platform for free, Altman said the huge success of the new generator was unexpected and meant the tool would remain limited to paid users for now.

It was already possible to generate images with ChatGPT, but the latest version is powered by GPT-4o, the company’s highest-performing model, and allows sophisticated results to be obtained through very succinct requests, which was not the case before.

After the viral trend, a video from 2016 resurfaced in which Studio Ghibli’s legendary director Hayao Miyazaki is seen lashing out during an AI demonstration by staff.

“I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself,” an English translation of his remarks said in the video.

The trend “is especially insidious and malicious because of how outspokenly scathing Miyazaki has been toward the tech,” wrote artist and illustrator Jayd “Chira” Ait-Kaci on Bluesky.

“It’s always about contempt for artists, every time,” Ait-Kaci added.

OpenAI is facing a barrage of lawsuits over copyright infringements, including one major case with the New York Times and others from artists, musicians and publishers.

Asked by AFP about the latest viral trend, and whether it threatened Studio Ghibli’s intellectual property, OpenAI said the company is still fine-tuning its model.

“Our goal is to give users as much creative freedom as possible,” a company spokesperson told AFP.

“We continue to prevent generations in the style of individual living artists, but we do permit broader studio styles, which people have used to generate and share some truly delightful and inspired original fan creations,” she added.

“We’re always learning from real-world use and feedback, and we’ll keep refining our policies as we go.”

The company is aggressively lobbying the White House and Congress to make the use of copyrighted content by AI companies part of the fair use doctrine.

Fair use allowances already apply to search engines or in the case of satire and memes online, and allow companies to freely use copyrighted material without permission.

Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that OpenAI is close to finalizing a $40 billion funding round led by Japan’s SoftBank Group that would be the biggest funding round ever for a startup.

OpenAI has projected its annual revenue could exceed $12.7 billion in 2025, up from $3.7 billion generated in 2024.

  • Djokovic and Mensik shine as they reach Miami Open semi-finals

Djokovic and Mensik shine as they reach Miami Open semi-finals

Novak Djokovic delivered a strong performance to secure his place in the semifinals of the Miami Open with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) victory over American Sebastian Korda. With this win, the 37-year-old Serbian became the oldest player to reach a Masters 1000 semi-final.

Djokovic started the match in great form, breaking Korda early and comfortably taking the first set. However, Korda fought back in the second set, forcing a tie-break. Despite the challenge, Djokovic remained composed and sealed the win with a powerful ace.

The fourth seed, who is aiming for his seventh Miami Open title, his first since 2016, credited his serve for his success.

“One word, serve. I was serving very well, probably the best serving performance, not just here, but in a long time,” Djokovic said.

Djokovic, who won 84 percent of his first-serve points, acknowledged that Korda played better in the second set but said his strong serving made things easier. He will now face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-finals on Friday.

If Djokovic wins the tournament, it will be his 100th career singles title – a remarkable milestone for the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Czech player Jakub Mensik made history by reaching his first Masters 1000 semi-final. He defeated France’s Arthur Fils 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 in a dominant display.

Fils had earlier caused a major upset by beating top seed Alexander Zverev but struggled against Mensik’s powerful serve. The young Czech, ranked 54th in the world, showed great focus throughout the match.

“It feels incredible. I think this is the biggest result of my career so far, and I’m happy that I kept going from the first round,” said Mensik.

Mensik will now face American third seed Taylor Fritz in the semifinals. Fritz battled past Italian Matteo Berrettini in a thrilling three-set match, winning 7-5, 6-7 (7/9), 7-5.

Berrettini put up a strong fight, saving six match points in the second set before forcing a deciding third set. The match remained close until Fritz finally broke serve at 6-5 and held on to claim victory.

With Djokovic, Mensik, Dimitrov, and Fritz in the semifinals, the Miami Open is set for an exciting finish.
