Trump signs order to ‘eliminate’ US Education Department

US President Donald Trump signed an order Thursday aimed at “eliminating” the Department of Education, a decades-old goal of the American right, which wants individual states to run schools free from the federal government.

Surrounded by schoolchildren sitting at desks set up in the East Room of the White House, Trump smiled as held up the order after signing it at a special ceremony.

Trump said the order would “begin eliminating the federal Department of Education once and for all.”

“We’re going to shut it down and shut it down as quickly as possible. It’s doing us no good,” Trump said. “We’re going to return education back to the states where it belongs.”

The Education Department, created in 1979, cannot be shuttered without the approval of Congress — but Trump’s order will likely have the power to starve it of funds and staff.

The move honors one of Trump’s campaign promises and is among the most drastic steps yet in the brutal overhaul of the government that Trump is carrying out with the help of tech tycoon Elon Musk.

The order directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return education authority to the States.”

Democrats and educators have slammed the move.

The top Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, called it a “tyrannical power grab” and “one of the most destructive and devastating steps Donald Trump has ever taken.”

Republican leaders, including governors Ron DeSantis of Florida and Greg Abbott of Texas, were in the audience for the signing ceremony.

Trump has cast the move as necessary to save money and improve educational standards in the United States, claiming they are lagging behind those in Europe and China.

But education has been a battleground for decades in America’s culture wars, and Republicans have long wanted to remove control of it from the federal government.

    ‘Beautiful day’

Trump’s appointment of McMahon — the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment — to lead the department was widely seen as a sign that its days were numbered.

The president said at the signing ceremony that “hopefully she will be our last secretary of education.”

McMahon, who moved to halve the department’s staff after being sworn in earlier this month, told reporters at the White House that Trump “wants to get those dollars back to the states without the bureaucracy of Washington.”

Trump promised on the campaign trail to get rid of the department and devolve its powers to US states, in much the same way that has happened with abortion rights.

But the White House said earlier that a rump education department was likely to stay on to deal with “critical functions” including loans and some grants for low-income students.

“The Department of Education will be much smaller than it is today,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters before the signing.

The Heritage Foundation — a right-wing think-tank that has seen many of its “Project 2025” recommendations adopted by Trump — welcomed the move.

“It’s a beautiful day to dismantle the Department of Education,” it said on X.

Traditionally the US government has had a limited role in education, with only about 13 percent of funding for primary and secondary schools coming from federal coffers, the rest being funded by states and local communities.

But federal funding is invaluable for low-income schools and students with special needs. And the federal government has been essential in enforcing key civil rights protections for students.

Trump, his billionaire advisor Musk and Musk’s Department for Government Efficiency (DOGE) have already dismantled several other government agencies, effectively crippling them by slashing programs and employees.

A similar move to dismantle the US Agency for International Development was halted earlier this week by a federal judge, who said the push likely violated the US Constitution.

  • Here’s why IPL opener between KKR, RCB might be abandoned

Here’s why IPL opener between KKR, RCB might be abandoned

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to begin on Saturday with a big clash between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), led by Virat Kohli. The opening ceremony will feature performances from popular artists like Disha Patani and Shreya Ghoshal.

However, just a day before the match, worrying news has emerged from Kolkata. The opening game is in danger of being completely washed out due to bad weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for 22 March, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain in South Bengal. A Yellow Alert has been issued for Sunday.

According to Accuweather, there is a 74 percent chance of rain in Kolkata on Saturday, with 97percent cloud cover. The situation is expected to worsen in the evening, with rain chances rising to 90 percent. Given these conditions, there is a high possibility of heavy showers at Eden Gardens, making it uncertain whether enough overs will be played for a result.

Apart from the rain concerns, another match at Eden Gardens is already being moved. KKR’s home game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on 6 April is set to be shifted to Guwahati amid security concerns with Navami celebrations in Kolkata on that day.

Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Snehasish Ganguly confirmed that Kolkata Police had informed them they would not be able to provide security for the match. Since rescheduling the game in the city is not possible, it will now likely take place in Guwahati.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari mentioned that over 20,000 Ram Navami processions are planned across West Bengal, making it difficult to manage security for the IPL match.

The KKR vs LSG match is expected to have a full crowd, as both teams enjoy strong local support. However, fans will now have to watch this exciting contest in a different city.

‘Salman Khan made us wait seven hours’; German director Michaela slams actor

German director Michaela, who has worked with several Bollywood stars, has criticized Salman Khan’s professionalism, revealing that the actor made people wait for hours on set.

According to Indian media reports, Michaela has collaborated with multiple filmmakers and actors, including Salman Khan, during the 10 years he worked in India.

Sharing his experience in a documentary film, he stated, “I have worked with many celebrities, some of whom have questionable professional skills, like Salman Khan, who used to easily make us wait on the set for seven hours. When we realized this, we started bringing other work with us because we knew we’d be sitting there all day. Probably no one on the set knew when he would arrive.”

In contrast, Michaela had a positive experience working with Shah Rukh Khan. “My experience working with Shah Rukh Khan for that documentary was good. I directed Shah Rukh for the documentary—he is a good person.”

Speaking about Alia Bhatt, he added, “I also worked with Alia Bhatt for an advertisement. She is extremely cool and professional.”

Seema Haider gives birth to a baby girl in India

Seema Haider, the Pakistani woman who moved to India two years ago for love, has given birth to a baby girl.

According to media reports, Seema delivered her daughter at a private hospital in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The couple’s lawyer confirmed that the baby was born on 18 March and that both the mother and child are in good health.

Speaking to the media, the lawyer also requested people to suggest a good name for the newborn.

Seema Haider made headlines in July 2023 when she crossed into India via Nepal to be with her partner, an Indian man named Sachin. She later claimed that they had married according to Hindu traditions.

Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, Seema had travelled to India with her children while her first husband, Ghulam Haider, was working in Saudi Arabia. He has repeatedly urged the Indian government to deport her back to Pakistan.

After her arrival, security agencies detained her, but she was later released on bail.

She has openly acknowledged her first marriage and children but has stated that she no longer wishes to continue that life. Instead, she wants to stay in India as a citizen.

In past interviews, Seema Haider revealed that she met Sachin while playing PUBG Mobile. Their conversations turned into love, leading her to leave Pakistan and settle in India.

  • PSX reaches record high as bull run helps benchmark index cross 119,000 points

PSX reaches record high as bull run helps benchmark index cross 119,000 points

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) achieved an all-time high as a bull run allowed the KSE-100, the benchmark index of the PSX, to reach an intraday high of 119,421.81 points. The index peaked at 9:48 AM after which profit taking took hold of the market causing the market to close at a respectable 118,769.77 points.

For reference, the KSE-100 closed at 117,974 points on Wednesday after which the index recorded a growth of 0.67 percent during trading hours on Thursday allowing for a 795.75 point rise. The market displayed a slowdown around 12:30 PM as the KSE-100 hit its intraday trading low of 118,444.03 points before recording a swift recovery to its current position.

Most indexes remained in the green with the All-share index (ALLSHR) experiencing a 0.82 percent growth rate which translates into a 600.67 point gain for the index. Unlike the KSE-100, which tracks the performance of the 100 largest and most liquid companies, the ALLSHR index records the performance of all publicly listed companies on the PSX.

Data from the PSX reveals that ALLSHR index has shot up by a staggering 68.5 percent over just one year with the KSE-100 recording an even greater rise of 80.69 percent over a one year period – a growth rate which many would categorize as nothing short of meteoric. Moreover, the Year-to-Date (YTD) change for ALLSHR and KSE-100 index were recorded improvements, sitting at 2.02 percent and 3.16 percent respectively.

A vast array of companies witnessed a rise in share prices with Sally Textile Mills Limited (STML) and Jubillee Spinning & Weaving Mills Ltd (JUBS) winning big – to the tune of growth rates that sat at 11.11 percent (STML) and 10.87 percent (JUBS).

However, not every publicly listed stock witnessed an improvement as many companies witnessed sharp declines. Of these declining companies, the one that fared the worst during intra-day trading was First Capital Securities Corporation (FCSC) which posted a 16.85 percent decline in its position.

Trading volume of regular stocks stood at an impressive 667,875,803 shares translating into a total value of over 38.5 billion rupees. As per credible reports, the bull run was fueled by strong domestic ‘institutional buying’ along with a possible solution of Pakistan’s power sector’s circular debt in the works.

Moreover, independent investors also believe that the disbursement of over $1 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) is on the horizon. Given the aforementioned reasons, investors have parked their funds into stocks as they foresee great returns in the near future.

  • Bilateral ties to witness boost after Pak-Saudi talks

Bilateral ties to witness boost after Pak-Saudi talks

In a bid to strengthen bilateral ties, a high-level delegation from Pakistan met with key officials from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). As per credible reports, both sides have agreed to stay committed to improving joint efforts to address regional challenges.

Leading the Pakistani delegation, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif landed in Jeddah for a four-day visit to KSA. According to reports, he intends to discuss further avenues of collaboration with his Saudi counterparts across a vast range of sectors.

As per reports, the Pakistani delegation comprises various high-profile members including Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz, along with a slew of federal ministers and notable high-ranking state officials.

In a meeting with KSA’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), Shehbaz Sharif outlined the cooperation between both countries while highlighting the importance of economic ties. The Pakistani premier, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), discussed the successful nature of his meeting with MBS and revealed that both leaders had gone over ways to improve security collaboration and boost trade and investment levels.

Shehbaz Sharif’s statements regarding boosting ties with the Middle Eastern kingdom represent the gravitational pull KSA has on Pakistan’s economy. According to reports, PM Sharif aims to take Pakistan-KSA “relations to new heights and transform them into a mutually beneficial economic partnership.”

Aside from sharing a common religion, both countries are largely on the same page when it comes to matters pertaining to geopolitics and military coordination. However, this codependence isn’t just limited to economic cooperation, as both sides have interests vested in the other’s economy.

Analysts believe that Pakistan-KSA ties have disproportionately benefitted cash-strapped Pakistan – which frequently finds itself on the receiving end of Saudi aid. Moreover, Pakistan has historically sourced a great deal of petroleum from the Middle Eastern country, allowing for a steady supply of fuel in the country.

In exchange, Pakistan has worked with KSA on joint military ventures. Both leaders have outlined the need to concentrate on enhancing bilateral trade and investment. This spells great news for Pakistan, which witnessed its foreign direct investment (FDI) levels plummet by a staggering 45 percent in February 2025.

In an effort to boost inflows of FDI into Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif outlined Pakistan’s investment-friendly climate and policies, which would facilitate investors from the KSA. Reports reveal that Pakistan’s delegation invited Saudi businesspersons to consider investing in Pakistani initiatives under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC).

‘People taunt me for not being married,’ says Maya Ali

Renowned actress Maya Ali has revealed that she is often taunted for being unmarried, especially after her younger brother got married.

Maya recently appeared on Nida Yasir’s Ramzan show with her cousins and family, where she openly talked about her childhood memories and personal life.

When asked about marriage, she said: “I believe that whatever is written in my destiny will happen.” She added, “As Muslims, we believe that everything is already written for us, so why don’t people apply the same belief to marriage? Why don’t they understand that marriage will happen when it’s destined?”

She further revealed that people often taunt her for being unmarried. “People say, ‘Your younger brother is married, why aren’t you?’ But what can I do? It will happen when it’s meant to happen.”

She made it clear that she won’t marry just for the sake of it, stating: “I will only get married when I find someone I truly like and feel a connection with.”

Talking about relationships, Maya shared: “With age, a person becomes more realistic. The fever of love also subsides. So, when I feel that a good person has entered my life, I will get married.”

She also revealed that her mother prays for her marriage in every prayer but added: “I can’t convince my elders that I won’t get married just for show.”

Maya Ali emphasised that she would like to marry someone who understands and values her career while also respecting her family, especially her mother.

“I will marry a person who understands the importance of a woman and her work, as well as supports her. That is the right of every woman,” she said.

Clarifying rumours, she stated: “I have not set any deadline or time for marriage. When I find the right person, and my heart tells me it’s time, only then will I get married—and no one will even know until then!”

  • US again avoids question linked to Imran Khan’s incarceration

US again avoids question linked to Imran Khan’s incarceration

US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce has given a neutral response to a question linked to former premier Imran Khan’s incarceration, stating that she will not comment on the internal frameworks of another country.

During the weekly media briefing on Wednesday, Frontier Post journalist Jalil Afridi, before asking his question, stated that the most popular Pakistani leader and biggest charity collector, Imran Khan, has been languishing in jail for the last two years, and everything in the country, whether it is the democracy or human rights, has been shattered in previous two years.

He then asked, “President Trump was talking a lot about Pakistan before the elections [the US Presidential], and thousands of his new voters in the US and millions of Pakistanis are expecting him to take some sort of action with regard to that country. Do you have anything in mind or have you heard anything the president says?”

Bruce responded, “I’m not going to comment on the internal frameworks of another country,” instructing the journalist to reach out to the White House regarding President Trump’s actions and intentions about Pakistan.

“I do think… President Trump has made it clear, as has Rubio [US Secretary of State], that we care about the planet, we care about our neighbours, we care about what’s happening on the globe, and that’s been evidenced by our actions,” the US State Department spokesperson concluded.

It is not the first time that the US State Department has avoided providing a crystal answer regarding former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s incarceration, as earlier this month, Bruce had outrightly sidestepped Jalil’s question about Imran Khan’s imprisonment during a briefing.

The journalist had earlier questioned, “Is the President aware that the most popular leader of Pakistan, Imran Khan, has been in jail for the last three years now, and a lot of atrocities have happened? Is the president at all interested in paying a little attention to Pakistan?”

The U.S. State Department spokesperson, while sidestepping the question, said, “I will answer that with noting that in his address to Congress, the president announced the arrest of ISIS-K operative, planned and responsible for killing 13 brave American service members and over 160 Afghan citizens at Abbey Gate.”

The spokesperson further said that the US extended gratitude to the government of Pakistan, adding that the US did collaborate in bringing Mohammad Sharifullah to justice.

On March 4, speaking to a joint session of Congress, President Trump thanked Pakistan for its role in arresting the alleged mastermind behind the 2021 Kabul Airport bombing, Sharifuulah, also known as Jafar.
