Petrol prices likely to go up, diesel expected to drop

Petrol prices for the next fortnight are projected to spike once again by about Rs4 per litre. However, the price of diesel is expected to drop because of unstable exchange rates and international market conditions.

According to reports, petrol prices could rise by Rs4.5 rupees per litre. On the contrary, high-speed diesel (HSD) and kerosene prices might witness a drop – under Rs1 per litre. These, however, are only preliminary estimates and are subject to change as per the final calculations by federal authorities, which is due by February 28.

Currently, HSD prices sit at a sky-high of Rs263.95 per litre while petrol prices stand at an uneasy Rs256.13 per litre. The sale price of kerosene is officially listed at Rs171.65 rupees per litre but reports claim it is being sold for an extortionate Rs350 per litre.

The aforementioned fuel rates are subject to change after authorities review existing prices. According to reports, the jump in petrol prices is being linked to a rise in international rates. Concurrently, exchange rate losses were recorded against the dollar, which can partially explain why prices are projected to rise.

As of publishing, Brent Crude Oil prices have remained fairly stable dropping just $2.38 per barrel over the past 14 days.

The expected rise in petrol prices could hurt the economy as pressures on the import bill are likely to rise. Historically, cash-strapped Pakistan has been a net importer of petroleum-based products. Data from recent years revealed that the country’s largest imports were petroleum gas ($7.56 billion), refined petroleum ($6.47 billion) and crude petroleum (4.78 billion).

However, the projected fall in diesel prices is likely to spur economic activity across various sectors. For instance, the transportation sector has diesel as a primary input and thus requires vast quantities of the commodity. With prices projected to fall, these businesses could witness a decline in operational costs, and ultimately, a rise in profit margins.

Islamabad charges a tax of approximately Rs76 per litre on both HSD and petrol. The bulk of this tax, a staggering Rs60 per litre, is charged under the category of petroleum development levy, whereas the other charge of Rs16 goes towards Customs duty.

Pakistan does not charge consumers any general sales tax (GST) on petroleum products. However, fuel suppliers and distributors tack on an additional Rs17 per litre as markup.

  • ‘Imran Khan’s persecution a stain on Pakistan’s history,’ US lawmakers say in latest letter

‘Imran Khan’s persecution a stain on Pakistan’s history,’ US lawmakers say in latest letter

Two congressmen, Joe Wilson and August Pfluger, have written a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling for the release of former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan.

Republican Representative Joe Wilson took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday to share the letter, writing in the caption, “Grateful to join @RepublicanStudy Chairman @RepPfluger to urge @SecRubio to free Imran Khan and work to restore democracy in Pakistan. US-Pakistan relations are strongest when they are based on freedom.”

The letter read, “You (Marco Rubio) recall that Imran Khan was Prime Minister in your first term, and you both shared a strong relationship. He is widely beloved in Pakistan, and his release would usher in a new era of U.S.-Pakistan relations with freedom value at its core”.

Drawing a parallel between Imran Khan and U.S. President Donald J. Trump as victims of “judicial abuse,” the letter stated that Imran Khan was imprisoned on trumped-up charges.

According to the letter, both congressmen urged Rubio to work with Pakistan to restore democracy, human rights, the rule of law, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly.

Emphasising that the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, must be treated like any other politician, the letter noted, “He (Imran Khan) does not belong in prison, and his persecution is a stain on Pakistan’s history.”

“… Your (US Secretary of State) goal is to have the strongest relations with every country in the world, and the strength of the US Pak relationships hinges on freedoms with Imran Khan.”

Earlier this month, Wilson also wrote a letter to the political and military leaders of Pakistan to Free Imran Khan.

The previous letter read, “… I have many disagreements with Mr. Khan, particularly his stance in support of the Chinese Communist Party and War Criminal Putin. However, democracy cannot work if political opponents are unjustly detained on politicised charges rather than defeated in the ballot box.”

“I urge Pakistan to uphold democratic institutions, human rights, and the rule of law, and respect the fundamental guarantees of due process, freedom of press, freedom of assembly and freedom of speech of the people of Pakistan.”

In a letter, Wilson stressed that Imran Khan’s release would be a major step toward strengthening U.S.-Pak relations.

The Republican Party member highlighted that a strong U.S.-Pakistani relationship is in the national interest of both countries. He underscored that, for over 75 years, U.S.-Pakistani bilateral relations have been strongest since Pakistan embraced its democratic ideals of the rule of law.

VIDEO: Vikrant Gupta falls in love with Lahore all over again

Renowned Indian sports journalist Vikrant Gupta has arrived in Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025, marking his first visit in nearly two decades.

In a viral video featuring Gupta alongside Pakistani sports journalist Sanaullah at Liberty Chowk in Lahore, he shares his thoughts on returning to Pakistan after so many years.

During their conversation, Sanaullah asked, “Gupta Bhai, you’re seeing Liberty Chowk after so many years. How does it feel?”

Gupta replied, “Yes, I remember when the 2004 and 2006 series took place, we used to pass through this very road. Some things have changed, but the beauty of big cities is that their character remains the same. The vibe here still feels the same.”

Sanaullah then asked, “Have you noticed any development?”

Gupta responded, “Well, we haven’t explored much yet. We just came from the hotel to Liberty Chowk. There’s still a lot of Lahore to see.”

Talking about his previous visits, Sanaullah asked, “Is the area where you’re staying now different from where you used to stay before?”

Gupta reflected on his memories, recalling, “Yes, it is. Back then, we used to stay on the other side of the city. I still remember it. Once we go there, I’ll see how much it has changed. From here, I can even see the stadium. As we get closer, I remember the hockey stadium, NCA, and the cricket stadium. There was a big parking area in front of it and even a football ground. Let’s go and check it out.”

The conversation then shifted to Pakistani cuisine, as Sanaullah curiously asked, “How did you find the food? You had daal (lentils) today.”

Gupta enthusiastically responded, “Yes, I had daal, and it was amazing! I also had parathas with pickles.”

Sanaullah, surprised, added, “Pickle parathas! That’s interesting because I’ve been eating here for six years, and I never had a pickle paratha before. And you got it on your first day!”

Gupta laughed and said, “Well, Paji made sure I had it. And it was fantastic!”

Speaking about the hospitality he received, Gupta expressed his gratitude, saying, “The respect I have received here is overwhelming.” He also praised the local food, adding, “Pakistan’s cuisine is absolutely amazing. The flavours are just incredible!”

  • ‘We selected the best available team’; Aqib Javed defends players

‘We selected the best available team’; Aqib Javed defends players

Pakistan cricket team’s head coach Aqib Javed has come forward in support of the players amid raging criticism over their performance in Champions Trophy 2025.

Speaking at a press conference in Rawalpindi on Wednesday, he said, “Pakistan selected the best available team, but the performances did not meet expectations, which is a fact.”

He further clarified, “There are no excuses in cricket. Before every match, the team remains hopeful, and we support them. The players themselves are disappointed with their performance. The nation should believe that the team put in its best effort. The emotions in a Pakistan vs India match are always different.”

Commenting on the Pakistan-India match, Aqib Javed said, “Had Pakistan managed to score around 300, it could have been a good contest. When there isn’t a strong total on the board, the bowlers have to be more aggressive, and that’s what happened with us.”

He also highlighted the absence of key players, saying, “Impact players are crucial in big matches. The absence of Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman made a difference because both of them had the ability to change the game. Sufiyan Muqeem and Irfan Niazi didn’t have enough exposure in ODI cricket, which added to the pressure.”

Explaining the selection strategy, Aqib Javed said, “In ODIs, a combination of seven batters and four bowlers is usually played. Since Saim Ayub could contribute with a few overs as well, Khushdil Shah was included in the squad as an alternative.”

Defending the fast bowlers, Aqib Javed said, “A bowling attack, consisting of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf is among the best. You won’t find such an attack in any team around the world.”

However, he also acknowledged the challenges they faced, stating, “When scores of 350 are being made in almost every match, these same bowlers are bound to concede runs.”

The head coach stated, “Not too long ago, this very team defeated Australia in a series, but as soon as we lost to India, criticism began, which is unfair.”

He further added, “If you look at the records of the players in the team, they clearly show that there is plenty of talent. However, I do admit that in the tri-nation series and the Champions Trophy, we couldn’t play the kind of cricket that was needed.”

Addressing criticism over Sufiyan Muqeem’s exclusion, he said, “People are asking why Sufiyan Muqeem wasn’t included, but the reality is that the boy has no first-class career. We gave him a chance, and he played just one match, yet now it is being said that if he had played, we would have won.”

Pakistan is out of the Champions Trophy 2025 after suffering a six-wicket loss to arch-rivals India in Dubai, following a 60-run defeat to New Zealand in their opening match in Karachi on February 19.

Internet reacts as Juggan Kazim praises CM Maryam Nawaz

A video of host-actors Juggan Kazim and Wasay Chaudhry praising Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has gone viral, sparking mixed reactions from social media users. While some lauded Maryam Nawaz’s leadership, others criticised the celebrities’ statements.

    A few notable comments included:

“Guys, relax! First, find out who Jagan is. She must be from Mohsin Naqvi’s circle!”

    “Paid actors.”

“By the way, how much did they get paid for this overacting? “

She praised Maryam Nawaz, stating that the Punjab Chief Minister “fulfills the promises she makes ahead of time, and I have personally experienced this.”

Juggan Kazim and Wasay Chaudhry recently hosted the Horse and Cattle Show, organised by the Punjab government. During the event, both celebrities appreciated Maryam Nawaz’s leadership.

Juggan highlighted the CM’s contributions, saying:

“Maryam Nawaz is the first female Chief Minister of Pakistan. This is a great achievement. She has taken many steps to serve the people and has introduced several reforms.”

Meanwhile, Wasay Chaudhry addressed Maryam Nawaz directly, saying, “Promise us that in the future, we will not have to wait so long for the Horse and Cattle Show.”

In response, Juggan Kazim reiterated her confidence in Maryam Nawaz’s leadership, stating, “She fulfills the promises she makes to the people even before their expiry date, and I am an eyewitness to this.”

She also described Maryam Nawaz’s tenure as a period of restoration for Punjab, highlighting her efforts in governance and development.

  • Maryam Nawaz’s 60-page advertisement showing one-year performance sparks online debate

Maryam Nawaz’s 60-page advertisement showing one-year performance sparks online debate

A 60-page advertising supplement showcasing Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Maryam Nawaz’s one-year performance as Chief Minister of Punjab has been published with Pakistan’s leading Urdu newspapers, sparking a furious row online.

Many social media users mocked Maryam Nawaz for focusing on her branding and questioning her marketing technique.

A social media user posted a video online on Wednesday with the caption, “In today’s newspapers, you will get 60 pages at the most reasonable price, and you’ll accumulate a good amount of waste paper.” In the video, the user can be seen counting the advertisement pages featuring Nawaz’s performance in one year.

Another social media user pointed out, “It seems like the government of Punjab has published a 60-page advertisement, most of which is more focused on images of Maryam Nawaz Sharif than on actual performance reports.”

A third user joked, “These 60 pages are just an event for today; by tomorrow, they’ll be found with pakora (fritter) and samosa vendors.”

Sharing the pictures of the front pages of multiple Urdu newspapers, another user opined, “These are today’s newspapers in Pakistan. The entire front page is covered with an advertisement from the Punjab government highlighting Maryam Nawaz’s one-year performance. If marketing is necessary, it should be targeted. Such random blanket marketing won’t affect opponents but is instead alienating their own voters.”

A fifth user, while highlighting that on Tuesday, the front pages of all major Urdu newspapers in Pakistan were completely identical—the same headlines, subheadings, news, and images, published without any alterations, lamented that media houses and journalists had completely surrendered before the government.

“This might be the first time a government has published an entire supplement in newspapers regarding its performance. Such supplements are typically published by expos, embassies, and large companies,” quipped journalist Riaz Ul Haq.

Former Senator Farhatullah Babar commented that a 60-page supplement at public expense was a monstrosity. “Whosoever placed 170 pictures of CM Punjab in its first 30 pages has done a monstrous disservice to her & her government,” he opined on X.

Meanwhile, TV host and journalist Absa Komal, while sharing the pictures of newspapers on X, wrote in a caption, “These newspapers are no longer associated with journalism—should they now be considered mere publicity platforms for the Punjab government? The eagerness to flatter the government and the financial gains may eventually fade, but the lost credibility will never be restored. The owners and editors of these newspapers have brought shame to the profession of journalism.”

Earlier this week, a unique advertisement highlighting Nawaz’s one-year performance as the provincial executive remained at the center of the debate.

The advertisement appeared on the internet on Friday, showing Pakistan’s female cricket team in hot water. Just when defeat seems inevitable, the team’s all-round captain player named Maryam rescues the team while playing a winning knock.

  • Couple in shock after sitting next to dead body on Qatar Airways flight

Couple in shock after sitting next to dead body on Qatar Airways flight

An Australian couple have criticised Qatar Airways after a blanket-draped corpse was seated next to them during a long-haul flight on their way to Venice for a vacation.

Mitchell Ring said a passenger died part-way through the 14-hour flight from Melbourne to Doha last week.

“They tried to wheel her up towards business class, but she was quite a large lady and they couldn’t get her through the aisle,” he told Australian network Nine News this week.

“They looked a bit frustrated, then they just looked at me and saw seats were available beside me.”

Ring said he was made to wait next to the corpse even after the plane landed.

“The ambulance officers and the police came in, and the ambulance officers started pulling the blankets off the lady,” he said.

    “It wasn’t nice.”

Ring and wife Jennifer Colin were seated next to the corpse while travelling en-route to Venice.

“I’m not a great flier at the best of times,” said Colin.

“There has to be a protocol that looks after the customers on board.”

Ring said he was seated with the body for around four hours despite other empty seats.

“They said,’Can you move over please’ and I just said, ‘Yes no problem’.

“Then they placed the lady in the chair I was in.

“There were a few spare seats around that I could see.”

CNN reports that a passenger offered Colin an empty seat across the aisle from Ring, where she sat for the rest of the flight.

“I was really shocked,” Colin told Nine Network, calling the experience “traumatic.”

“We totally understand that we can’t hold the airline responsible for the poor lady’s death, but there has to be a protocol then to look after the customers that are on board,” she said.

In a statement to Australian media, Qatar Airways apologised “for any inconvenience or distress this incident may have caused”.

“First and foremost our thoughts are with the family of the passenger who sadly passed away on board our flight.”

  • ‘Clash of egos’: Reports blame Rizwan-Aqib power struggle for Champions Trophy humiliation

‘Clash of egos’: Reports blame Rizwan-Aqib power struggle for Champions Trophy humiliation

An internal power struggle between skipper Mohammad Rizwan and head coach Aqib Javed overshadowed the team’s performance, ultimately leading to the national cricket team’s humiliation in the Champions Trophy, a private media outlet has claimed.

According to reports, Rizwan was visibly frustrated over not being consulted on key decisions. While he pushed for Khushdil Shah’s inclusion to the squad, Aqib insisted on adding Faheem Ashraf. The selectors and Rizwan were also not on the same page, further complicating matters, reports said.

The reports come days after defending champions and hosts Pakistan lost two of their three Champions Trophy fixtures and were knocked out of the tournament. Pakistan suffered a six-wicket loss to arch-rivals India in Dubai, following a 60-run defeat to New Zealand in their opening match in Karachi on February 19.

Earlier, it was reported that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had prior to the tournament suggested two squad revisions, but his advice was ignored. Although he had the authority to enforce changes, he chose not to intervene directly.

Following Pakistan’s disappointing exit, PCB will review the team’s performance and hold discussions with the management to identify mistakes. Aqib, who was given the interim coaching role, does not intend to resign but will not continue as head coach. However, he is expected to retain an unofficial role in selection matters.

With public criticism mounting, PCB may be forced to make tough decisions, possibly dissolving the selection committee as well.

Another major concern for the board is Babar Azam’s prolonged dip in form, as he has failed to deliver impactful performances for over a year. Despite the selectors defending their squad choices, glaring flaws in team composition—especially in the opening, spin bowling, and all-rounder slots—have been exposed.
