A notification issued by the provincial government states that girls’ schools will be allowed to dismiss students 15 minutes prior to the above mentioned schedule.

  • PM’s meetings with Azerbaijan officials could bring in $2bn investments

PM’s meetings with Azerbaijan officials could bring in $2bn investments

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussed expanding bilateral trade with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev. According to reports, a staggering $2 billion in investments could pour into Pakistan as a result of the boost in economic ties with the Central Asian country.

Along with the agreement to promote commercial activities between both economies, both premiers discussed supporting joint defence production ventures.

In a conversation with Shehbaz Sharif, Ilham Aliyev reportedly outlined his willingness to visit Islamabad around April of this year. The reason for his planned visit is to formalise the agreed-upon investment arrangements officially.

As per credible reports, Shehbaz Sharif oversaw the signing of a plethora of economic agreements, notably the Sale and Purchase of LNG cargoes related to the Master LNG Sale and Purchase Agreement.

Moreover, officials from Pakistan’s Frontier Works Organization (FWO) and Pakistan State Oil Company (PSO) inked an agreement with Azerbaijan’s national State Oil Company. The aforementioned agreement pertained to bilateral cooperation on the Machike-Thallian Tarujabba White Oil Pipeline Project.

Currently, bilateral trade value sits at a measly $40 million, which Shehbaz Sharif believes does not adequately display the true strength of the ties between both ‘brotherly’ countries.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz underscored the need to enhance the bilateral trade, as the current trade of $40 million hardly reflected the strong relationship between the two brotherly countries. He spoke to the Pakistan-Azerbaijan Business Forum in Baku, discussing the need to expand commercial activities between both countries.

Moreover, he thanked Ilham Aliyev for removing import tariffs on Pakistan’s basmati rice. The removal of the aforementioned import duties spells great news for Pakistani farmers as they could now secure lucrative export contracts with Azerbaijan-based importers.

This could help plug the gap in the cash-strapped nation’s trade deficit, which has historically remained high. Additionally, a rise in export revenues could help keep the rupee stable as it has over the last year.

Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that tackling high tariffs could allow for trade to reach respectable levels. However, his claim about trade volume rising by a colossal $1.96 billion seems extremely ambitious. For reference, the rise represents an improvement of 4,900 percent from the current bilateral trade position.

However, he claimed that it was possible if relevant stakeholders put their ‘acts together’. Four Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) have already been signed, marking the start of a potential rise in trade volume. The majority of the MOUs pertain to the oil sector.

Under one of the MOUs, Pakistan’s northern areas will be equipped with pipeline infrastructure as currently, under 33 percent of total oil is transported via Pipelines in Pakistan.

  • Punjab to amend decades-old Qanun-e-Shahadat, other laws with focus on women, children

Punjab to amend decades-old Qanun-e-Shahadat, other laws with focus on women, children

The Punjab government has decided to amend decades-old criminal laws to modernise the province’s legal framework, media reports said Tuesday.

According to reports, the government has established a Legal Reforms Committee to draft amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1898, the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) 1860, and the Qanun-e-Shahadat Order (QSO) 1984.

While CrPC is procedural legislation for prosecuting, trying and punishing criminals under substantive criminal law, PPC is the law that defines crimes and their punishments. The QSO, on the other hand, is the law of evidence. It includes Islamic rules such as competency of witnesses, number and gender of witnesses, exclusion of accomplice’s evidence, provisions for oaths as a way to determine cases and provisions for legitimacy.

The reforms will focus on crime prevention, law enforcement efficiency and public safety, with special emphasis on laws pertaining to the protection of women and children. The committee will also suggest amendments related to counterterrorism, cybercrime, cybersecurity and interprovincial coordination.

The Punjab Home Department has issued a notification confirming the committee’s formation. DIG Kamran Adil has been appointed as chairman while Additional Secretary (Judicial) Imran Hussain Ranjha will serve as secretary.

Other members include legal and prosecution officials, and the committee is expected to submit its report within three months.

In December 2024, the Punjab cabinet, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, had approved a series of significant reforms and projects aimed at improving governance, agriculture and social welfare across the province. Significant approvals included the formal establishment of the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority under the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority Rules 2024.

The cabinet also approved the delegation of hearing powers to assistant commissioners for the Punjab Environment and Regulatory Authority.

PCB to sack big names after failed Champions Trophy campaign: reports

The backlash from Pakistan’s poor performance in the Champions Trophy, including the humiliating defeat against arch-rivals India, has prompted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to consider a complete overhaul of the team’s support staff, including interim head coach Aaqib Javed, reports have claimed.

“Pakistan Cricket Board is reportedly set to sack the interim men’s cricket head coach Aaqib Javed and his support staff after the ongoing 2025 Champions Trophy,” journalist Saj Sadiq said in a post on X.

The post comes days after Pakistan suffered a six-wicket loss to India in Dubai, following a 60-run defeat to New Zealand in their opening match in Karachi on February 19.

While the board is yet to make an official announcement, it merits a mention that PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi had appointed Aaqib as the interim head coach for the white-ball team after Gary Kirsten’s resignation late last year.

Aaqib was later also given charge of the red-ball squad, following Jason Gillespie’s departure.

With Pakistan set to tour New Zealand from March 16 to April 5 for five T20Is and three ODIs, the PCB is now focused on appointing a new permanent coaching staff.

  • Imran Khan’s jail expense jumps to Rs700,000 a month after Bushra Bibi’s imprisonment

Imran Khan’s jail expense jumps to Rs700,000 a month after Bushra Bibi’s imprisonment

A spike has been reported in incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s expenses at the Adiala Jail since after his wife and former first lady Bushra Bibi was also locked up in the Al-Qadir Trust case last month.

According to reports, the total cost of Khan’s meals and other expenses has jumped from Rs400,000-500,000 to Rs700,000 with jailed Bushra adding Rs200,000 to it.

The expenses, including food, are being borne by former prime minister’s (PM) family, reports said and added that these included the customized breakfast, lunch and dinner menus set by Khan himself.

Reports also quoted sources as saying that the incarcerated couple’s meals were prepared in a separate kitchen.

On Khan’s dietary habits, reports quoted sources as saying that he preferred fresh juice and fruits in breakfast, three coffees a day, and all his meals were checked by nutritionists. Moreover, he regularly has pink salmon as well as desi chicken broth.

It merits a mention that Bushra joined Khan in jail as legal woes of the former premier continued with a rigorous imprisonment sentence in the Toshakhana reference last month.

The Toshakhana – state gifts storehouse – has been under a microscope ever since the emergence of the allegations that Khan purchased the gifts he received as PM at throwaway rates and sold them off in the open market for staggering profits.

Accountability court’s Judge Muhammad Bashir announced the verdict in January, also disqualifying Khan for 10 years while handing over a fine of Rs1.57 billion — Rs787 million each — to the couple.

Khan told the court that his wife had nothing to do with the case and was being humiliated by forcibly being dragged into it.

Following the verdict, Bushra, who was not present in court when the sentence was announced, arrived at the Adiala Jail and surrendered before the authorities.

NAB had filed the reference against the duo for unlawfully taking a Rs1.57 billion jewelry set, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets and a ring, from the Toshakhana. Khan and Bushra had only paid Rs9 million for the set and had fixed the price of the jewelry set through a private firm.

  • Angeline Malik walks the ramp with bald head, speaks out on cancer battle

Angeline Malik walks the ramp with bald head, speaks out on cancer battle

Renowned actress Angeline Malik has broken new ground in Pakistani fashion as the first model to walk the runway with a fully shaved head.

She launched her jewellery collection earlier this month and revealed her cancer diagnosis, sharing that she is undergoing treatment. Sharing pictures of herself without hair on social media, she wrote, “I have been diagnosed with cancer and am undergoing treatment.”

Despite her health battle, she recently participated in the Winter Fashion Gala (WFG), where her bold appearance on the catwalk went viral on social media.

Following the event, she spoke to Dawn Icon, expressing her pride in introducing a new trend in Pakistani fashion. “I was the first model in the history of Pakistani fashion to walk the catwalk in a fashion show with a completely bald head,” she stated.

Reflecting on her jewellery collection launch, she shared, “I launched my jewellery collection last year and hired several male and female models. At that time, I had the idea that there should be a completely bald woman for my jewellery collection, but none were available.”

With a smile, she added, “A year later, I was available for a photo shoot with complete baldness, and my photoshoot was well-received.”

Speaking about her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, she revealed the fears she faced.

“Everyone had scared me about the negative effects of chemotherapy. Hearing everyone’s words, I felt like I was going to hell,” she recalled.

She admitted that after being diagnosed, she felt terrified and disheartened by people’s reactions but later gathered the courage to fight back.

“I imagined myself as strong and healthy. I shaved my head and did a photoshoot to express solidarity with women suffering from cancer,” she said.

Angeline Malik also raised concerns about the lack of facilities for cancer patients in Pakistan. “There are no proper facilities for cancer patients, not even places for them to exercise. There are no guidelines or regulations for their care before and after treatment,” she stated.

She emphasised the importance of fitness and nutrition in recovery.

“Exercise and a healthy diet, along with treatment, play an important role in cancer recovery. But in our country, little attention is given to diet and exercise. The way people treat cancer patients is also frightening—it leads many to depression and fear,” she added.

  • Pat Cummins concerned over India’s ‘Champions Trophy venue advantage’

Pat Cummins concerned over India’s ‘Champions Trophy venue advantage’

Australian captain Pat Cummins has raised concerns over India gaining an unfair advantage in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy by playing all their matches at a single venue in Dubai.

Cummins criticized the ICC’s decision, calling it a major advantage for India. “I think it’s great that the tournament is moving forward, but India playing all their matches at one venue gives them a big edge,” he said.

He further added that India already has a very strong squad, making the situation even more favourable for them.

Pat Cummins is currently sidelined due to injury and will not be participating in the Champions Trophy. In his absence, Steve Smith has taken over the captaincy for Australia.

Meanwhile, India will play all their matches, including their first semi-final, in Dubai. In contrast, other teams will have to travel between venues for their group-stage matches.
