  • Significant drop likely in fuel prices

Significant drop likely in fuel prices

Prices of petroleum products might witness a significant decline on Saturday for the upcoming two weeks. As per reports, fuel prices can drop from 2.5 rupees to nine rupees per litre, depending on the type of fuel in consideration.

Experts’ speculation hinges on the fall in petroleum prices in international markets. Over the past two weeks, brent prices declined by two dollars per barrel to settle at a modest $74.5.

This spells great news for Pakistan as pressures on the import bill are likely to be alleviated. Historically, the cash-strapped nation has been a net importer of petroleum-based products. Data from recent years revealed that Pakistan’s largest imports were Petroleum Gas ($7.56 Billion), Refined Petroleum ($6.47 Billion) and Crude Petroleum (4.78 Billion).

According to reports, the ex-depot petrol price is expected to fall by a conservative 2-2.5 rupees per litre. Kerosene and light diesel oil prices are reportedly projected to follow a similar trend as they are likely to fall by 3.45 rupees to five rupees per litre.

However, unlike kerosene and petrol, high-speed diesel (HSD) might fall by a liberal of nine rupees per litre. However, these are only estimates, and real prices could vary marginally from these values.

Analysts claim that a decline in the international market is responsible for lower petroleum prices. Reports reveal that the import duty on petrol declined from $8.8 per barrel to a more manageable $7.75 per barrel. Additionally, the ex-refinery cost of kerosene witnessed a fall, allowing the prices of the commodity to drop.

The average price of petrol fell by a conservative $0.9 per barrel while HSD prices tanked – falling by $3 per barrel. However, unlike the fall in import premium on petrol, reports claimed that authorities did not alter premiums on diesel.

The fall in petroleum prices is likely to spur economic activity across various sectors. For instance, the transportation sector has fuel as a primary input and, thus, requires vast quantities of the commodity. With prices projected to fall, these businesses could witness a decline in operational costs and, ultimately, a rise in profit margins once prices drop.

Moreover, the agricultural sector relies heavily on fuel to run water pumps and tractors. If fuel prices fall, it will be cheaper for farmers to grow their yields. This outcome could allow consumers to witness relief as farmers may choose to revise prices to capture more buyers.

With prices of foodstuffs rising because of abnormally large vegetable and rice exports to Bangladesh, consumers in the domestic economy are likely to welcome lower prices for a change.

  • ‘Childish’ & ‘brainless’ decisions: Ahmed Shehzad calls out skipper Rizwan

‘Childish’ & ‘brainless’ decisions: Ahmed Shehzad calls out skipper Rizwan

With Pakistan losing the tri-nation series final against New Zealand Friday, former Pakistani cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has called out white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan’s tactical decisions, going on to label his approach as “childish” and “brainless”.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Shehzad slammed Rizwan’s decision to bat first in the match, calling it “brainless” and “lacking understanding of the pitch conditions”.

“Pakistan’s bubble has burst ahead of the Champions Trophy,” Shehzad said, adding that it was a “mind-boggling decision”, especially after seeing in the previous match that the pitch was better for batting at night.

“The ball doesn’t grip for spinners. Still, the team decided to bat first—no clue,” Shehzad said.

The 33-year-old also expressed his frustration with Rizwan’s team selection, particularly the decision to leave out a specialist bowler in favour of an all-rounder. He argued that this weakened the team’s bowling attack and that Rizwan’s cautious approach favoured a deep batting lineup over a well-balanced team.

“In every decision, the Pakistan captain wants to play it safe with batting,” Shehzad explained.

“Whether it’s not having enough spinners in the Champions Trophy squad or, in this match, playing Faheem Ashraf as an all-rounder to strengthen the batting at the expense of Mohammad Hasnain. Yet, Ashraf only bowled two overs,” he said.

Shehzad warned that such “childish decisions” could hurt Pakistan’s chances in the upcoming Champions Trophy.

Pakistan on Friday lost the tri-series final to New Zealand by five wickets. Despite outclassing South Africa in the second match of the series, the national side’s batting lineup crumbled before Kiwi bowlers, putting up a target of mere 243 runs.

New Zealand comfortably won the match by five wickets and with 28 balls to spare.

  • Hamas hands over another three Israeli hostages to Red Cross in Gaza

Hamas hands over another three Israeli hostages to Red Cross in Gaza

Gaza handed three Israeli hostages over to the Red Cross on Saturday in an exchange that is also set to see the release of 369 Palestinians from Israeli custody, the latest such swap under an ongoing truce deal.

An AFP journalist saw masked Hamas parade the hostages onto a stage in Gaza’s southern city of Khan Yunis, where they were told to address the crowd before their handover to the Red Cross.

Clutching gift bags given by their captors and a certificate to mark the end of their captivity, the three men, flanked by fighters, called for the completion of further hostage exchanges under the ceasefire deal.

The release, the sixth since the truce took effect on January 19, came after fears last week that the deal between Israel and Hamas was near collapse. But on Friday both sides signalled that Saturday’s swap would go ahead.

Dozens of Hamas fighters lined up around the stage bearing the logo of the group’s armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, as Palestinian nationalist music played.

Sources from Hamas and Islamic Jihad said the groups had deployed about 200 militants for the handover ceremony.

A crowd also gathered in Tel Aviv’s “Hostages Square” to watch the exchange, with many carrying Israeli flags and posters in support of the captives.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had named the hostages as Israeli-American Sagui Dekel-Chen, Israeli-Russian Sasha Trupanov and Israeli-Argentinian Yair Horn.

They had been held in Gaza since Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attacks.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club advocacy group said Israel was to release 369 inmates in exchange, with 24 of them expected to be deported.

Almost all of the rest are “prisoners from the Gaza Strip who were arrested after October 7”, the group said.

After the deal had appeared to be on the brink of collapse, a Hamas official on Friday said the group expected talks on a second phase of the ceasefire to begin early next week.

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whose country is Israel’s top backer and one of the truce mediators, is due to arrive in Israel late Saturday ahead of expected talks with Netanyahu on the Gaza truce.

Last week’s release sparked anger in Israel and beyond after the freed hostages were paraded onstage, with their emaciated state sparking concern over conditions in captivity.

Israeli-American hostage Keith Siegel, released in a previous exchange, said he was “starved and… tortured, both physically and emotionally” during his captivity.

There were also fears for Palestinians in Israeli custody after some prisoners required medical treatment following their release in the last swap.

    Riyadh summit

The ceasefire has been under massive strain since US President Donald Trump proposed a takeover of the Gaza Strip under which the territory’s population of more than two million people would be moved to Egypt or Jordan.

For Palestinians, any forced displacement evokes memories of the “Nakba”, or catastrophe — the mass displacement of their ancestors during Israel’s creation in 1948.

The stage set up for the release on Saturday bore an illustrated poster appearing to depict the final moments of Hamas’s leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces in October. It showed the Al-Aqsa Mosque visible through a hole in the wall of a destroyed building along with the slogan: “No displacement except to Jerusalem”.

Arab countries have come together to reject Trump’s plan, and Saudi Arabia will host the leaders of Egypt, Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on Thursday for a summit on the issue.

After the Riyadh summit, the Arab League will convene in Cairo on February 27 to discuss the same issue.

A joint statement from the heads of Christian churches in Jerusalem on Saturday also spoke out against any forced displacement, saying Gazans “who have lived for generations in the land of their ancestors, must not be forced into exile, stripped of… their right to remain in the land that forms the essence of their identity”.

Trump had warned this week that “hell” would break loose if Hamas failed to release “all” remaining hostages by noon on Saturday.

Israel later insisted Hamas release “three living hostages” on Saturday or “the ceasefire will end”.

    Second phase

Under the terms of the 42-day first phase of the ceasefire agreement brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, negotiations for a second phase were due to start on February 3.

Netanyahu had sent negotiators to Doha days later, but the delegation was not mandated to discuss phase two, which is meant to lay out steps towards ending the genocide.

Hamas official Taher al-Nunu told AFP on Friday that “we expect the second phase of the ceasefire negotiations to begin early next week”.

Another source familiar with the talks told AFP that “mediators informed Hamas that they hope to start the second phase of negotiations next week in Doha”.

The October 7, 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,211 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Militants also took 251 hostages, of whom 73 remain in Gaza, including 35 the Israeli military says are dead.

In retaliation, Israel’s genocide against Palestians has killed at least 48,239 people in Gaza, the majority of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory that the United Nations considers reliable.

  • ‘Enough is enough’: Former cricketer says time for Babar Azam to start scoring

‘Enough is enough’: Former cricketer says time for Babar Azam to start scoring

Former Pakistan Test cricketer Tauseef Ahmed has said that “enough was enough” and he now wanted to see Babar Azam score runs.

Speaking to a private media outlet, Ahmed said that it was time for Babar to step up and play an important role in the national side’s wins.

He further said that it was easier for openers to score with just two fielders outside the 30-yard circle. “Fakhar [Zaman] plays attacking cricket and if he gets out, it is bad luck.”

However, he added, what happened to Saud Shakeel was a planned wicket.

Babar’s cousin and former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, on the other hand, said that the star batsman put up an impressive display in recent matches with Pakistan outclassing South Africa in the tri-series.

He went on to talk about the recent changes to the batting order and said Babar Azam was among the best ODI batsmen out there. “He needs to play positively and focus on shot slections,” Akmal said and added that everyone wanted to see Babar scoring runs.

“It is not just about Babar’s performance but every player needs to take responsibility. If we improve our bowling, we can play brilliant cricket like New Zealand,” he concluded.

It merits a mention that the statements come after New Zealand crushed Pakistan owing to the national side’s lackluster performance in the tri-nation series ahead of the Champions Trophy.

Pakistan managed to win only against South Africa but lost both the opener and final of the series against New Zealand.

On Friday, New Zealand won the tri-series final by chasing down Pakistan’s unimpressive target of 242 for a loss of only five wickets and with 28 balls to spare.

The first powerplay was a portent for Pakistan’s go-slow. The hosts played out 48 dots in the powerplay, in which they managed 48 for 2, and failed to hit a high tempo through the innings.

Babar Azam brought the Karachi crowd alive when he laced Jacob Duffy through the covers for four, and became the joint fastest to 6,000 ODI runs in his 123rd innings, alongside Hashim Amla.

He, however, returned to the pavilion after scoring just 29 off 34 balls.

  • Fawad Chaudhry ‘knocks out’ Shoaib Shaheen outside Adiala Jail

Fawad Chaudhry ‘knocks out’ Shoaib Shaheen outside Adiala Jail

A scuffle broke out between former federal minister for information and broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry and senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shoaib Shaheen outside Gate No. 5 of Adiala Jail on Saturday.

As per media details, Chaudhry called Shoaib Shaheen a “tout”. In response, Shaheen told him to “mind his own business”.

Chaudhry then punched Shaheen, resulting in the latter falling to the ground and sustaining an injury on his arm. Following the altercation, Chaudhry went inside the jail while Shaheen was called inside by the Superintendent of Adiala Jail.

Media reports later in the day claimed that the former minister had made peace with Shaheen who, however, maintained that no such thing had happened.

As to the reason behind the altercation, it was claimed that Shaheen had quoted PTI founder as calling Chaudhry a “bhagora” [deserter]. But Chaudhry claimed that he had asked Khan, who told him he had not said any such thing.

It may be noted that this is not the first time that Chaudhry has physically attacked a famous person. In January 2020, the then- Minister of Science and Technology was present at the walima ceremony of then Punjab Irrigation Minister Mohsin Leghari’s son. It was widely reported by media that Fawad slapped television anchor Mubashir Luqman.

Following the scuffle, Chaudhry took to X (formerly Twitter), writing, “People like Mubashir Luqman have nothing to do with journalism. […] It is everyone’s duty to expose such journalistic brokers.”

The former confidante of Imran Khan, while speaking to a private media news channel hours after the altercation, claimed, “There was a scuffle that broke out. A small fight broke out. In a fight, as usually is the case, he may have got one (slap) in, I may have hit one (sic).”

On being asked about whether his action was justified, Chaudhry responded, “Of course. It was my right. When you level such allegations, anyone will react.” He added, “Everyone has a tolerance level. I face a lot of criticism. But I have not even blocked people on Twitter.”

He said that he had complained to the then-prime minister’s aide on accountability, Shahzad Akbar, about Luqman’s YouTube show and had also called the director general of the Federal Investigation Agency’s cyber wing but did not get the desired response.

According to media reports, the physical altercation apparently occurred when the former TV host Mubashir Luqman uploaded a video on his YouTube channel on January 4, 2020, featuring him and anchorperson Rai Saqib discussing the TikTok stars Hareem Shah and Sandal Khattak’s connection with Chaudhry.

Saqib, while citing TikTokers, claimed that both have multiple “immoral videos” of Chaudhry that they could release them at any time. “I have seen the video,” Saqib said upon being asked if he had watched Fawad’s videos.

In June 2019, Chaudhry was accused of slapping YouTuber Sami Ibrahim at a wedding function in Faisalabad days after Ibrahim had posted a video on social media, alleging that a plot to oust then Prime Minister Imran Khan and weaken the Pakistan Army was being orchestrated.

He further alleged that some from within the PTI were a part of this so-called plot, and without offering any concrete proof to support his accusation, Chaudhry was implicated in the video.

Following the allegation, Chaudhry took to X (formerly Twitter) on June 3, 2019, launching a piercing attack on Ibrahim. The then-minister resorted to slurs and insulting language against the anchor.

  • Mustafa Amir case: ‘Dispute began over girl on New Year’s Eve’

Mustafa Amir case: ‘Dispute began over girl on New Year’s Eve’

New details in the Mustafa Amir murder case reveal that the undergraduate student was killed and burned following a dispute over a girl of foreign nationality.

Police officials say that Armughan, the accused, and Mustafa were friends, and the two had an argument on New Year’s Eve. Following the argument, Armughan threatened to kill Mustafa along with the girl they were reportedly fighting over.

According to the investigating authorities, on January 6, the accused tortured Mustafa, while the girl went abroad on January 12. Interpol is trying to bring her back, as her statement is necessary for the case.

Police officials say that murder charges were added to the case after the body was found.

Karachi police said on Friday that they found the body of Mustafa Amir in his car, both of which had been badly burnt, near the Hub check post.

Amir, a BBA student who went missing on January 6, had been the subject of a significant search effort by the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC). “Amir was taken in this car to Hub check post where [prime suspect] Armughan set it on fire,” the police said.

A senior police official said in a press conference that recovering Amir’s mobile phone and other items from Armughan’s home were a turning point in the investigation. Inspector General Muqqadas Haider of the CIA said that Amir’s mother received a ransom call on January 6. He confirmed that another suspect named Shiraz Bukhari alias Shavez over suspicion of being involved in the case.

Shavez’s murder had led to the discovery of the timeline of the abduction and murder. He is a close friend of Armughan.  “Shavez’s admission corroborated statements of Armughan’s servants who were detained for questioning by the police in which they admitted that Amir came to their house on January 6 and was shot dead after a fight erupted between them,” he said.

Balochistan police had handed over the body to a welfare organisation for its burial as an unidentified body.

Previously, police officials revealed that Mustafa was kidnapped by  Armaghan, who, also in his early 20s, demanded ransom a month later.

As the alleged kidnapper demanded Rs20 million, the case was taken over by the Anti Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) for investigation.

Further investigation revealed that Mustafa also had a criminal record, with a drug trafficking case registered against him on January 4, 2025. He was accused of supplying weed in posh areas of the port city.

As police raided a bungalow in Defence on February 8, the accused, Armaghan, was arrested and a large quantity of drugs was recovered from his possession.

Armaghan confessed that Mustafa’s body was dumped in the city’s Malir area, police said, adding that it had not yet been recovered. Further investigation is underway as police search for other possible suspects.

  • Faiz Hamid facilitated 600 kanals of land for Imran Riaz, Sher Afzal Marwat says Ali Amin tells him

Faiz Hamid facilitated 600 kanals of land for Imran Riaz, Sher Afzal Marwat says Ali Amin tells him

Days after being expelled from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Sher Afzal Marwat, citing Chief Minister (CM) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Ali Amin Gandapur, claimed that former intelligence chief General Faiz Hamid facilitated more than 600 kanals of land for YouTuber and former TV host Imran Riaz Khan.

Speaking to reporters in Islamabad on Friday, the KP firebrand claimed, “Ali Amin Gandapur told me that General Faiz Hamid facilitated more than 600 kanals of land for Imran Riaz in Chakwal, where the latter built a palace, fish ponds, and a horse stable.”

While raising questions about how Riaz made billions of rupees when he did not even have a motorbike, Marwat remarked, “Ali Amin also told me that he [Riaz] was the confidant of Faiz Hamid,” alleging that the ex-TV host had a close relationship with the intelligence agencies during PTI’s reign.

“Imran Riaz came to me 10 times seeking a mining contract,” Marwat quoted Gandapur as saying, adding that he found Riaz every time he visited the CM House.

He further quoted CM KP as saying that, in an “attempt to become a hero” through collusion with agencies, Riaz got arrested.

Inquiring about how the YouTuber ran away from Pakistan merely with the help of mules, Marwat said that if the government had the intention of not letting Riaz leave, his passport could have been blocked within a minute. “Then how did he reach the United Kingdom?” he questioned, adding that Riaz’s passport was valid.

Concluding his tirade on the former TV host, Marwat said that he had made a video exposing Riaz’s properties, which he planned to share soon.

Separately, Marwat, while speaking to a private news channel, claimed that PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja was behind his expulsion from the party.

He said that Raja became the party’s secretary general through the “influence of powerful individuals”.

“Non-elected individuals in the party are running the party matters,” he said, asserting that he would respond to those responsible for the propaganda against him.

It merits a mention that following the instructions of party founder Imran Khan, Marwat was expelled from the party on Wednesday. He was sacked “due to his continuous violations of the party discipline”.

Riaz, while confirming on his X (formerly Twitter) account last month that he had left the country, wrote, “….I am proud that my Lord granted me steadfastness against every injustice. I have endured the worst torture and terrifying imprisonment. I have been arrested 10 times and faced dozens of cases. I was even forcibly stopped from performing Hajj, but my Lord granted me patience. I have some important responsibilities to fulfil, and I will return to Pakistan soon, InshaAllah.”

In an interview with the Sherin Zada YouTube channel, Riaz revealed that former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Qasim Suri, introduced him to individuals who accompanied him during his escape from the country.

The former TV host clarified that he had been residing in Swat before leaving Pakistan. Prior to that, he had stayed at safe locations across Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, and Swabi.
