    Asif Zardari declares Shehbaz, Gandapur meeting a ‘good beginning’

    Newly-elected President Asif Ali Zardari has said on Thursday that the meeting between the prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, and the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Ali Amin Gandapur, is a “good beginning.” 

    Shehbaz Sharif’s government came into power this month after making an alliance with multiple parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

    However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is in power in KP, and it also allegedly accused PML-N of stealing PTI’s mandate in general elections. 

    President Zardari has welcomed the interaction between the prime minister and the chief minister.

    “It is high time we start thinking of working towards healing the divisions Pakistan has been going through,” he added.

    “This outreach is a good beginning,” he stated.

    Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday, indicating a possible melting of ice between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

    Addressing a press conference with Ahsan Iqbal, Gandapur said that the meeting was positive. “I have asked the prime minister to politically engage with Imran Khan. Political engagement will lead to a political solution,” he told the members of the press.

    Gandapur also said Shehbaz confirmed that Gandapur would be allowed to meet Khan in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail where authorities have increased security and barred ex-PM Khan from holding meetings owing to “threat alert”.

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur is scheduled to meet newly elected prime minister Shehbaz Sharif today (Wednesday) to talk about the replacement of Chief Secretary Nadeem Afzal Chaudhry.


    ARY sources have confirmed that Ali Amin Gandapur didn’t attend the oath ceremony while a meeting is scheduled for today to discuss the matter of the CS’s appointment.


    A day earlier, chief minister KP send a summary to Shehbaz Sharif for removal of Chief Secretary Nadeem Afzal Chaudhry. Gandapur wanted to appoint Shahab Ali Shah as the new Chief Secretary, expecting him to bring fresh perspectives and innovative strategies to the role, thereby contributing to the overall development of the KP province.

    The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has sent a notice to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur after a petition was filed against him for misleading the commission about a piece of land, The News reported on Wednesday.

    Two members of the ECP bench, including Sindh Member Nisar Ahmad Durrani and Balochistan Member Shah Muhammad Jatoi, heard the plea and adjourned the hearing of the case till March 26.

    In a short order, the electoral authority decided to send a notification to newly-elected KP chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who won his provincial seat from Dera Ismail Khan.

    In his plea, Muhammad Kafeel — the petitioner — claimed that 735-kanals of land, situated in Mouzah Girah Muhabbat and Muzah Rohri, Kulachi, district DI Khan, was transferred in the name of Gandapur temporarily while Asif Khan was the real owner.   

    Muhammad Kafeel highlighted that Gandapur is not the actual owner of property and he was supposed to return the property back to actual owner on his demand.

    The petitioner said in liabilities forms furnished for the year 2020 and duly published, Gandapur had allegedly shown purchase of a Toyota Land Cruiser, YB-777 from the funds which he received from the sale of 735 kanal land. He also contended that on account of such wrong declaration, Gandapur was not qualified to hold the office of member provincial assembly.

    With the signatures of ECP Sindh member, the order said, “We have heard preliminary arguments which need consideration on merits. Office to issue notice to respondent No. 5 (Ali Amin Gandapur) for the date fixed through District Election Commissioner concerned. The service report of DEC shall reach to this office before the date fixed. Case to come up on 26.03.2024.”

    The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet is set to take its oath of office today after Chief Minister of the province Ali Amin Gandapur got approval from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, who is currently in Adiala jail serving sentences in multiple cases.

    Ali Amin Gandapur said in a statement that he discussed the formation of the KP cabinet with Imran Khan in Adiala jail.

    “Cabinet members will take oath today,” he confirmed.

    After meeting the founder of PTI, the newly-elected chief minister came back to Peshawar and asked relevant authorities to arrange the oath taking ceremony in the Governor House.

    However, the names of cabinet members have not been revealed yet.

    Interestingly, a majority of those considered and approved as cabinet members by Imran Khan were unaware of their selection. The News learnt from its sources that KP CM Gandapur did not disclose the names of his cabinet members, as he was under pressure by certain factions within the party to accommodate their nominees.

    The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet will be finalised after the approval of sentenced founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, Geo has reported, quoting newly-elected chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Saturday.

    “I will meet the PTI founder over [matters pertaining to the formation of the] KP cabinet on Monday (March 4),” Gandapur said.

    Geo sources claimed that there are 15 members on the list of prospective cabinet members that will be shown to founder PTI, including the names of Mushtaq Ghani, Khaleeq ur Rehman, and Aqib Ullah Khan. 

    The development comes days after newly-elected members of the provincial legislature were sworn in by now-former speaker Mushtaq Ghani in a ruckus-hit inaugural assembly session.

    A day earlier, Ali Amin Gandapur, after being elected chief minister, demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja in his victory speech in the provincial assembly.

    Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has won the intra-party elections unopposed as the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). This is the first time in PTI’s history that he is the only person to hold the top position in the party twice.

    “At the conclusion of the withdrawal phase of candidates/panels, there is only one candidate/panel remaining,” the PTI said in a statement late Thursday.

    Member of the National Assembly (NA), Omar Ayub Khan, was elected as the PTI’s central general secretary after intra-party polls.

    Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ali Amin Gandapur, and Haleem Adil Sheikh were also among party leaders who were elected unopposed to the positions of the party’s presidents for Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Sindh respectively, as no candidate came forward to contest against them.

    The former ruling party will organise intra-party elections in Quetta to elect the president of Balochistan.

    “The final result of the election will, however, be declared by the Federal Election Commissioner on March 3, 2024, at the conclusion of the election process,” read the statement.

    Ali Amin Gandapur, leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), contested as an independent candidate in the recent elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He won the vote to become the new chief minister of the province on Friday afternoon, after the voting finished in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly.

    PTI founder Imran Khan has nominated Ali Amin Gandapur as the party’s candidate for KP Chief Minister. There is a high chance of his winning based on the number of PTI-backed members in the provincial assembly.

    The former federal minister decided to contest the top provincial post in an independent capacity after refusing to join the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) — the party which was joined by PTI-backed independent winners to claim their seats.

    Gandapur was the former federal minister of Kashmir affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan during the PTI government in the centre from October 2018 to April 2022.

    Previously, he was a member of the KP Assembly from 2013 to 2018 and served as provincial minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for revenue.

    Ali Amin Gandapur, a prominent leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and perhaps the next Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), has opted out of joining the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

    Instead, he has chosen to contest independently for the top provincial post, backed by PTI members aligned with the SIC, as reported by The News on Monday.

    Following general elections, independent winners supported by PTI from KP have affiliated themselves with the SIC to secure designated seats for women and religious minority representatives.

    However, Gandapur, who secured victory from Dera Ismail Khan, will pursue the PTI’s provincial presidency and is actively involved in the party’s intra-party elections scheduled for March 3, having submitted his nomination papers accordingly.

    In parallel, Ali Asghar, another PTI member, has submitted his papers for the position of provincial general secretary, while Aqibullah Khan, nominated by PTI and the brother of senior leader Asad Qaiser, will compete for a KP Assembly office position under the SIC banner.

    The announcement of KP cabinet members is pending final approval from PTI’s founding chairman, Imran Khan, following extensive consultations. Additionally, the PTI is deliberating over several candidates for the deputy speaker position, with the chosen individual’s identity expected to be disclosed imminently.

    On the opposition front, parties have resolved not to concede ground to PTI and have declared intentions to nominate candidates for chief minister, speaker, and deputy speaker roles. The opposition plans to finalize consensus candidates following an imminent meeting.

    Abdul Jalil Jan, the spokesperson for Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), confirmed that neither Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) nor Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have initiated talks with their party regarding the election of KP Assembly officials.

    With the inaugural session of the KP Assembly scheduled for February 28, the assembly will witness the swearing-in of newly elected members, followed by the election of the speaker, deputy speaker, and chief minister.

    Meanwhile, Ali Amin Gandapur expressed his commitment to democratic principles and serving the people during interactions with elected members, party workers, and various stakeholders.

    He expressed these views during meetings with the members-elect of the national and provincial assemblies, party workers and people from different walks of life, including scholars and lawyers, at the Speaker’s House.

    Gandapur spoke about improving the province’s law and order situation as well as adding health cards, langar khana, shelter homes and police reforms would be restored. He said that the people would be provided with a uniform education system, while the lack of resources would not be a hurdle in the completion of this great mission.

    PTI’s Faisal Javed appears in court after ‘hiding’ for months

    On Monday, Senator Faisal Javed of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) appeared in  Peshawar High Court (PHC) after “hiding” for months and and secured transit bail. 

    PHC Chief Justice Mohammad Ibrahim Khan granted transit bail to the PTI leader, who hasn’t been seen in public since several months.

    The court granted bail against bonds worth Rs100,000 and ordered the PTI senator to appear before the concerned court.

    Talking to journalists outside the court, Faisal expressed joy over being granted bail and noted that, “Everyone is going through testing times. I hope that all the oppressed return home.”

    The judge approved also Ali Amin Gandapur’s transit bail petition for a case against him in Islamabad. Gandapur is the PTI nominee for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister.
