Pakistan’s star javelin thrower and Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem has been awarded yet another major international honour. The Asian Athletics Association has named him the Best Asian Athlete, recognizing his outstanding performance and contributions to athletics.

Arshad made history at the Paris Olympics last year by delivering the longest throw in Olympic javelin history, earning Pakistan its first-ever Olympic gold in the sport. His victory not only brought pride to the nation but also established him as a true icon in the global athletics community.

The prestigious award was presented to Arshad Nadeem following a meeting of the Asian Athletics Association held in South Korea. The meeting was attended by prominent officials, including the Chairman of South Asian Athletics, Major General (R) Muhammad Akram Sahi, President of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan Brigadier (R) Wajahat Hussain Sahi, Secretary Colonel (R) Shah Jehan, and Arshad’s coach Salman Butt.

Pakistan’s javelin star and Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem has left for South Korea to compete in the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships.

This event marks Arshad’s first international appearance since his historic gold medal win at the Paris Olympics. His return to the global stage is being closely followed not only by fans in Pakistan but also by athletics enthusiasts worldwide.

It is worth noting that in 2024, Arshad Nadeem made history by securing Pakistan’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in track and field at the Paris Games. Since then, he has emerged as one of the world’s leading athletes in his discipline.

Arshad Nadeem on Neeraj Chopra’s comments

Pakistan’s star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem has chosen not to respond to Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra’s recent comments about their relationship, saying that the current tense situation between Pakistan and India is not the right time to talk.

When asked about Chopra’s statement while speaking to the media on Wednesday, Nadeem said, “I don’t want to talk about it because of the situation between Pakistan and India. I always stand with the Pakistan Army.”

Chopra, in a recent interview, had said that while the two have always shown mutual respect, they were never close friends, adding that their equation is not the same anymore. “We were never really close friends or anything,” Chopra stated. “But because of this [recent issue], it will not be like before.”

Despite not commenting further, Nadeem praised Chopra’s performance, congratulating him for crossing the 90-metre mark for the first time in his career at the Diamond League in Doha, where Chopra won a silver medal.

The Pakistani javelin ace is now focused on the upcoming Asian Athletics Championship, which will be held in Korea from May 27 to 31.

“I will try my best to perform well at the event,” he said. “My goal is to throw 100 meters. I’m working hard, and by the will of Allah, I’ll achieve it one day.”

After the Asian Championship, Nadeem shared that he plans to travel to England after Eid-ul-Adha to begin preparations for the World Athletics Championship. He will be training there alongside his coach Salman Butt.

At age 28, Nadeem continues to carry Pakistan’s hopes on the international stage and is working tirelessly to reach new milestones in his career.

All eyes on Arshad Nadeem as Pakistan reveals squad for 2025 Asian Athletics Championship

Pakistan has named a small but talented squad for the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, set to be held in Gumi, South Korea, from May 27 to 31.

Leading the team is Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Arshad Nadeem, who will once again represent the country in the javelin throw. He will be joined by Yasir Sultan, a rising talent in the same event.

The squad also features Shajar Abbas and Mueed Baloch, both competing in the men’s 400m sprint events.

Tameen Khan is the lone female athlete to qualify and will take part in the women’s 100m sprint.

Shajar, regarded as Pakistan’s fastest sprinter, has shown great progress recently and is expected to make his mark at the Asian level.

This championship will serve as a key stepping stone for Pakistani athletes ahead of larger international events. While Arshad Nadeem is already an established star, the rest of the team will be aiming to use this platform to build their reputations on the global stage.

The Pakistan Athletics Federation has expressed confidence in the squad, hoping the athletes will not only participate but also compete for medals.

  • Neeraj Chopra breaks silence after Arshad Nadeem declines invite to India

Neeraj Chopra breaks silence after Arshad Nadeem declines invite to India

India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra has expressed his strong sentiments after coming under fire for inviting Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem to take part in the first-ever Neeraj Chopra Classic, scheduled for 24 May in Bengaluru.

Chopra, who typically prefers actions over words, shared a statement, noting, “When my devotion to my country and my family’s dignity are questioned, I cannot remain quiet.” He emphasised that his invitation to Arshad was solely a sign of sportsmanship — one athlete welcoming another to honour the competitive spirit.

“There has been an overwhelming amount of discussion about my choice,” Neeraj wrote, clarifying that the invitation was made days prior to the tragic terrorist incident in Pahalgam that shocked the nation.

In the meantime, reports have confirmed that Arshad Nadeem has graciously turned down Chopra’s invitation. Arshad expressed gratitude to Neeraj for the kind offer but explained that his busy training schedule and preparations for the Asian Athletics Championships, which commence on 27 May in South Korea, made it unfeasible for him to attend.

However, as the situation escalated between the two countries, Neeraj said things turned ugly. Hate messages flooded in. Trolls didn’t just stop at him, but targeted his family as well. “They haven’t even left my mother out of it,” he wrote, visibly pained.

What appears to have affected him the most isn’t the cancellation of the event, it’s being labelled as anti-state. “For years, I have carried my country with pride,” he expressed. “It pains me to see my character questioned. Just because I’m not vocal doesn’t imply I don’t have feelings.”

He also criticised the rapid shifts in public sentiment, recalling how his mother made a harmless comment that was once celebrated but is now being manipulated against her.

Neeraj concluded with a strong vow: to exert more effort than ever so that the world remembers India for positive reasons. “We are simple people,” he stated. “Don’t misrepresent us.”

Arshad Nadeem declines Neeraj Chopra’s invitation to Bengaluru javelin meet

Pakistani Olympic gold medalist and star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem has declined an invitation from Indian counterpart Neeraj Chopra to participate in the upcoming Bengaluru Classic Javelin Throw Championship.

According to reports, the invitation was declined because Arshad’s training schedule and annual competition calendar had already been finalised before the receipt of the invite. As a result, he respectfully opted out of travelling to India for the event.

Chopra had personally invited Arshad in a bid to bring together top-tier javelin talent for the Bengaluru meet. However, Arshad is currently focused on his preparations for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championship, that is scheduled to be held in South Korea at the end of May.

He is set to depart for South Korea on May 22, five days before the tournament begins on May 27.

  • Why is Arshad Nadeem our person of the year?

Why is Arshad Nadeem our person of the year?

The first-ever Pakistani player to win a gold medal in the Javelin throw competition in the Paris Olympics 2024, Arshad Nadeem united a deeply polarised country in the best way possible. The moment his javelin sneaked through the air on its way to breaking records went down in history, every single Pakistani felt the achievement personally.

Many mothers were left teary-eyed seeing the pride in his mother’s eyes, and many fathers learnt to support their children’s dream.

For us, it was Arshad’s thoughtfulness that won us over.

“A university should be established in the Mian Chunno City so that [it brings ease] to our sisters who have to travel to Multan for education covering a long distance spanning over 1.5 to two hours,” the gold medalist said in his first interview after reaching home with his son in his lap and a crowd waiting to greet him.

Arshad’s words were loud and clear, demanding a solution to the long and strenuous journey of going to Multan from his city that discourages many from pursuing academic aspirations.

It was not just the medal that made him popular but the nobility of thought that made the glory permanent. Moreover, it was the sheer display of hard work and dedication that made people from all walks of life come around and celebrate Arshad’s achievement as the success of all the underdogs, the poor, the sportsmen playing any sport other than cricket and just everyone trying to make it big without any resource in a country like ours.

Winning a gold medal and setting a new record of 92.97 metre long throw in the history of the Olympics was one thing, inspiring people to think beyond the usual is another. With Arshad’s resounding success, so many got to know about the unique sport of javelin throw. Many videos popped up, featuring children practising their throws.

It also gave us that rare moment of mutual love when India’s Neeraj Chopra and Arshad’s mothers celebrated each other’s sons, going against the tide of expected rivalry.

Last but not least, the throw realized the age-old parable of the tortoise and the hare in its true sense. Arshad’s slow and steady win was nothing short of the tortoise, who reached the finish line despite all the hurdles. From fifth in Tokyo 2020 to winning gold at Paris 2024, he kept his head low and spirits high, raising the morale of the country.
