‘Atif ki price mein aik aur Pakistan Idol ho sakta tha’: Tanveer Afridi on why some songs were skipped from the show

Pakistani singer Tanveer Afridi has explained why songs by some major artists rarely appear on the reality show Pakistan Idol.

Speaking in a recent discussion, Afridi said that copyright restrictions prevent the show from featuring certain songs.

“Pakistan Idol definitely has restrictions on some songs because we do not have their copyrights,” he said.

Afridi pointed out that the cost of licensing some songs remains too high for the production. He specifically mentioned the fee required to cover Atif Aslam’s songs.

“The price for Atif Aslam’s songs was so high that we could have made another Pakistan Idol with that money,” he said.

Afridi stressed that artists have every right to decide the value of their work. “He is a big artist. It is his right to ask for whatever fee he wants,” Afridi said.

Pakistan Idol returned to television in 2025 after more than a decade. The show airs on Geo TV and brings back the global Idol franchise format for Pakistani audiences.

The judging panel for the latest season includes Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Fawad Khan, Zeb Bangash, and Bilal Maqsood. The show features contestants from across the country competing for the title of Pakistan’s next singing star.

Atif Aslam breaks silence on claims he charges huge fees for interviews

Pakistani singer Atif Aslam enjoys massive popularity on social media, but the superstar is also often accused of demanding  heavy fees for interviews.

Recently, Atif sat down with a journalist for a detailed conversation about his career, personal life and stardom.

During the interview, the host asked him about the common perception that he charges a big amount to appear on shows.

Atif replied, “I have reached a point where I know I do not need to sit on every show. If someone says I take a heavy fee, it clearly means they want me on their show and maybe they want the world to notice them too.”

He added, “Allah has blessed me with so much respect. Sometimes my schedule is too packed and I really cannot go. Still people say things about me and I know exactly what they are referring to. I am not apologetic about it and I do not want to respond to it.”

Talking about the industry, Atif said, “I know everyone very well. They stay nice only until their show or interview is done. It is not always arrogance. Arrogance does not suit a human being.”

Speaking about success, Atif said, “I learned to conquer the world at the age of 18 and I did it. I have amazing fans. When you climb the ladder of success you have certain goals. When you achieve all of them, you realise it is nothing.”

He continued, “There came a time in my life when I realised that nothing will ever be enough. You have to stop somewhere or you will keep running and never enjoy what you achieved.”

Atif said he eventually reached a point in life where he understood that constant running would never be enough. “You have to stop at some point. Otherwise, you will stay trapped in the race and never enjoy what you earned,” he remarked.

It is worth mentioning that Tabish Hashmi once revealed on Ahmed Ali Butt’s podcast that some celebrities demand as much as one crore rupees for appearances.

Nida Yasir also advised Atif on Tabish’s show to reduce his fee and visit her morning show, with both hosts even discussing a joint venture to bring him on screen.

The Toronto leg of the tour was particularly special with the crowd singing along to his classics and reacting enthusiastically to every track.

In the video posted to Instagram, Atif is seen surrounded by his crew and musicians backstage, reflecting on which songs resonated most with the audience. While his hit track Tu Chahiye plays in the background, team members share their favourite moments from the night. One musician described feeling “blessings” in the energy of the performance while another declared it the best show yet.

A standout moment, as highlighted in the video, was Atif’s surprise performance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, which one crew member called “the banger part of the show”.

Adding to the magic of the tour was a special on-stage appearance by fellow artist Meesha Shafi. The duo lit up the arena with a high-voltage rendition of their Coke Studio hit Jugni, blending Punjabi folk with rock, much to the delight of the Toronto audience. Shafi also expressed her gratitude for being part of the historic show, calling it an honour to join Atif on such a grand stage.

While the tour has been a roaring success, it hasn’t been without controversy.

In a separate interview during his Canadian tour, Atif admitted that he misses Bollywood. Reflecting on his years of playback singing for Indian films, he described the experience as magical and said he remains hopeful about future collaborations beyond borders.

The tour also sparked some mixed reactions online after a video from his Vancouver concert showed a fan dancing on stage beside him. While some praised the spontaneity, others criticised the behavior as disrespectful, igniting debate across social media platforms.

As of now, Atif is continuing his journey with his next stop being Detroit.

Atif Aslam says he misses Bollywood

One of Pakistan’s biggest stars, singer and sometimes-actor Atif Aslam, has said that he misses working in Bollywood.

Atif, who is currently in Canada for a concert tour, sat down for an exclusive interview with Indian host and journalist Faridoon Shahryar.

During the interview, he opened up about his musical journey and said, “I miss you guys. It has been what 8 to 10 years since I last worked there. I miss performing there, recording in studios… miss friends there but I am happy that music is flourishing all over the world.”

He also shared his thoughts on what a singer feels when he gets on stage. “When I get to the stage, I forget everything and I don’t have any clue what’s happening in my life. At first, you sing for fame, then for money and when you’ve reach at certain position, you only do it as an art and then a time comes when you do it for yourself.”

“If we talk about Pakistan, we don’t have a lot of big names or singers. Our industry isn’t as large as Bollywood…  and that’s just the reality,” he said.

Reflecting on his own success, the singer added that despite limited resources, God had enabled him to reach Bollywood and that was the greatest blessing for me. “He made me shine in such a vast world. I can never thank Him enough for His blessings.”

To a question about memories of song Dil Diyan Gallan, Atif said he was in Dubai with Vishal Shekar. “I remember they made me sing on low notes and I am glad they did that because everyone wanted and expected high notes from me. When I sang it in low notes, a beautiful tune popped in. Also, the song had beautiful lines. Yes, I sang for Salman Khan as well and it is always a pleasure to sing for Salman Khan because we have met a few times… what a man, what a guy.”

Meanwhile, many Indian fans of the singer are saying that they miss him too.

  • Celebrities, fans praise Atif’s professionalism for I-Day performance despite father’s passing

Celebrities, fans praise Atif’s professionalism for I-Day performance despite father’s passing

Atif Aslam’s choice to perform on Independence Day in Karachi, one day after his father’s passing, has generated an outpouring of support from fans and fellow artists. The singer graced the stage at the Sindh government’s Maarka-e-Haq Jashn-e-Azadi event held at Karachi’s National Stadium, entertaining a full audience despite his recent sorrow.

His performance caught significant attention as videos from the event began circulating on social media. While some viewers were taken aback by his decision to perform so soon, many from the industry publicly lauded his determination to fulfil a prior commitment.

Actor Saba Qamar posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, stating that she recognized the struggle of performing while in mourning. “Bearing heartbreak while putting on a smile is one of the most difficult challenges anyone can face,” she remarked, adding that his ability to take the stage the following day showcased “strength, depth, and dedication.”

Actor Nameer Khan applauded Aslam, remembering that he had to go back to work shortly after his father’s death and noted how audiences often fail to grasp the struggles artists endure away from the spotlight. “They witness the performance, not the sorrow beneath it,” he commented, referring to Aslam’s performance as a testament to his professional dedication.

Superstar Meesha Shafi referred to Aslam as “the most exceptional and committed artist” of his time, sending prayers for him and his family.

The support extended to social media platforms as well. One user remarked, “Life and performances must continue. We will always remember our loved ones, but they would want us to keep advancing.” Another urged for an end to the online negativity, stating, “Let’s offer a prayer for him. May Allah provide him with the strength to endure this loss and grant his father the highest status.” Others acknowledged that his performance likely fulfilled an engagement made many months prior, viewing it as a testament to his devotion to his art.

Despite frequent reports of delays and last-minute cancellations in Pakistan’s live music circuit where artists sometimes arrive late or withdraw without notice, Atif Aslam’s decision to perform under such personal strain has renewed discussion on professionalism in the industry. Public responses contrasted his approach with a pattern where performers fail to meet commitments. In March 2024, for instance, singer Asim Azhar’s Lahore concert was cancelled at short notice. Organisers cited “unforeseen circumstances,” but Azhar later said neither he nor his team had any conflict and that no genuine reason was provided for the postponement. Against this backdrop, many noted that while cancellations and delays remain common, Aslam honoured an engagement made months earlier, setting an example of dedication to his craft.
