Australia stuns England with thrilling Ashes victory at Edgbaston

In a gripping Ashes encounter at Edgbaston, Australia claimed a thrilling two-wicket triumph, taking a 1-0 lead in the series with a remarkable display by skipper Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon.

The final day was packed with tension, culminating in an extraordinary performance by Cummins and Lyon, who formed an unyielding ninth-wicket partnership. Against a boisterous crowd, they defied all odds and successfully chased down a target of 281, adding an unbeaten 55 runs to their team’s tally.

This victory held significant meaning for Australia as it avenged their heartbreaking two-run defeat on the same ground 18 years ago, when they narrowly missed reaching a target of 282. Cummins, unbeaten with a crucial 44 runs, and Lyon, undefeated on 16, propelled Australia to their closest Ashes victory in terms of wickets since 1907.

Initially, England seemed to be on the verge of victory as captain Ben Stokes bowled Usman Khawaja with a mesmerising slower ball, while Joe Root showcased exceptional skills with a return catch off Alex Carey. However, in the final hour of the match, Cummins and Lyon skillfully countered England’s short-ball strategy, thwarting their plans.

The tension reached its peak when Stokes nearly pulled off a sensational flying catch to dismiss Lyon, but unfortunately lost control of the ball. With less than five overs remaining and three runs required, Cummins guided Ollie Robinson towards the third man, where a diving Harry Brook fumbled, ultimately securing an incredible win for Australia.

The Edgbaston clash lived up to its reputation as an Ashes classic, captivating fans with its high stakes and enthralling cricket. The series now moves on to the second Test at Lord’s on June 28, promising further excitement and intensity for cricket enthusiasts worldwide.

  • Unverified allegations against Babar Azam: Australian news outlet deletes story after PCB’s criticism

An Australian news outlet posted an unverified and baseless story about Pakistan cricket team skipper Babar Azam. The publication accused the skipper of sexting to his teammate’s girlfriend. However, Fox cricket has now deleted the story after PCB slammed the news outlet for posting baseless stories.

“As our media partner, you might have considered ignoring such unsubstantiated personal allegations which Babar Azam has not deemed worthy of a response,” the board tweeted from its official account.

The story alleged that Babar Azam had sexted one of his teammate’s girlfriends and promised her that her boyfriend won’t be out of the team if she continues in that streak.

However, the Pakistan cricket team captain has not commented on the allegations yet.

Fox Cricket’s report stated “the account, which is a parody page, then removed the original tweet and explicitly apologized to Babar”.

It should be mentioned here that a woman made severe accusations against the batter in November 2020 and requested that he be persecuted on suspicion of fraud and sexual harassment.

A Lahore session court instructed the police to file a complaint against Babar. The Lahore High Court, however, suspended the order of the session court in 2021.

  • What will happen if rain disrupts the Pak vs Eng final this Sunday?

What will happen if rain disrupts the Pak vs Eng final this Sunday?

The much-awaited T20 World Cup final between Pakistan and England is set to be played at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia on November 13 (Sunday).

As fans wait with baited breath for the clash of the titans, a bit of a dampener is developing on the horizon.

The match is expected to be washed out by rain.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology of the Australian Government, there is a 95 per cent chance that Sunday will bring showers (8 to 20 mm). To make matters worse, Monday’s outlook is the same as Sunday’s. That is bad news for the 90,000 fans expected to show up at the stadium for the clash.

Under tournament playing conditions, if the final is abandoned, no result is possible or if a Super Over cannot be completed after a tie, “the teams shall be declared joint winners”.

There is another possibility that the final could be reduced to as short as a 10-overs-a-side game, even if the reserve day is activated in case of rain. It is pertinent to mention that in the semis and final, both teams must bat for a minimum of 10 overs to constitute a game.

Whether a match is resumed in the revised conditions is the key in determining how the game would continue on Monday at 3 pm, the scheduled starting time.

Prior to this, three T20 World Cup matches at the iconic MCG have already been abandoned due to bad weather.

In the 2002 Champions Trophy tournament, both Sri Lanka and India were declared winners because the final match couldn’t be completed in the two days allocated to it due to rain.

  • Naseem Shah tests positive for Covid-19

Naseem Shah tests positive for Covid-19

Before the crucial seven-match T20I series against England at home, fast bowler Naseem Shah has tested positive for COVID-19, according to Geo Super.

The bowler is presently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, and will not be available for the final two Twenty20 internationals against England.

Shah was recently admitted to a hospital for treatment after experiencing a high fever, where his dengue test was also done, but it was later discovered that he has a chest infection, which has led to further problems.

Yesterday, it was reported that the right-arm pacer was diagnosed with pneumonia, and he may miss the remainder of the ongoing series, while also casting doubts on his participation in the forthcoming tri-nation series in New Zealand and the T20 World Cup in Australia.

“Naseem Shah’s participation in the upcoming matches and departure to New Zealand with the squad will be decided after seeing his medical reports,” a cricket board official said in a statement.

The management decided that Naseem should recuperate ahead of the tri-nation series in New Zealand and the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, therefore he has only participated in one of the four games.

In the just-finished Asia Cup 2022 in the UAE, Naseem Shah made his T20I debut. There, he put up an amazing bowling performance, capturing seven wickets in five games with an economy rate of 7.66.

  • Australia passes climate bill to cut emissions by 43% by 2030

Australia passes climate bill to cut emissions by 43% by 2030

The Australian government has passed its first major climate legislation. The legislation will need royal assent before it officially becomes law. The Labor government’s climate bill cleared the Senate by 37 votes to 30 after accepting minor amendments. It also enshrines net zero emissions by 2050.

The recently passed bill includes the national targets of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by at least 43 per cent by 2030 (compared with 2005) and reaching net zero by 2050.

The country is one of the highest emitters per capita in the world, and the bill brings it in line with other developed countries such as Canada, South Korea, and Japan.

Minister for climate change and energy, Chris Bowen, said the legislation sends a message to the world.”The passage of the climate change legislation sends a message to the world that Australia is serious about driving down emissions and serious about reaping the economic opportunities from affordable renewable energy,” Minister Bowen said, adding that “Legislating these targets gives certainty to investors and participants in the energy market and will help stabilise our energy system.”
“It also strengthens transparency and accountability through the annual climate change statement and will ensure public debate informs government decisions,” he concluded.
