  • India child rights body demands ban on ‘Bombay Begums’ for showing ‘minors having cocaine’

India child rights body demands ban on ‘Bombay Begums’ for showing ‘minors having cocaine’

An Indian government agency for protecting child rights has asked Netflix Inc to immediately stop streaming its new drama series Bombay Begums after it reviewed complaints around scenes showing children consuming drugs.

According to details, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), in a letter to Netflix, asked the streaming giant to investigate the matter and submit a report within 24 hours or face further action.

The NCPCR took action based on a complaint which alleged that the series normalises minors indulging in casual sex and drug abuse and objected to a scene showing “minors having cocaine”.

“The series with this type of content will not only pollute the young minds of children, and may also result in abuse and exploitation of children,” the NCPCR notice said, adding “Netflix should take extra precaution while streaming any content in respect of the children or for the children and shall also refrain from getting into such things,” the commission said in its notice.

Netflix did not respond to a request for comment.

Featuring Pooja Bhatt, Shahana Goswami, Amruta Subhash, Plabita Borthakur and Aadhya Anand, Bombay Begums is a series about five women from different parts of society trying to get ahead in modern Mumbai, formerly called Bombay.

The controversy is the latest to hit video streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in India, where they have faced complaints also around promoting obscenity or hurting religious sentiments. Industry executives say such complaints go against freedom of speech and expression in the country.

A member of India’s ruling party’s youth wing last year lodged a police complaint against Netflix objecting to scenes in the series A Suitable Boy showing a Hindu girl kissing a Muslim boy against the backdrop of a Hindu temple.

Amazon recently became embroiled in legal cases following allegations that its political drama Tandav depicts Hindu gods in a derogatory manner.

Several users on Friday tweeted their objections and support for the new Netflix show, making #BombayBegums a top trend on the microblogging website.

“If your child is influenced to do drugs by scenes in which a young girl does cocaine … You need to talk to your child, not the show,” Twitter user Sahir said.

  • Netflix India announces star-studded lineup for 2021

Netflix India has announced that it would release 41 shows and films in India this year, calling the move its “next big leap” in the world’s second-most populous nation India, where video streaming services have become more popular.

According to details, Netflix’s new roster includes 41 titles featuring Bollywood actors, stand-up comedy shows and original series. Most shows will be in the Hindi language.

The upcoming content will feature top Bollywood actors including Madhuri Dixit, Kartik Aryan, Sonakshi Sinha, Karan Johar, Manoj Bajpayee, R. Madhavan, and Raveena Tandon.

“We are taking our next big leap in India,” said Netflix while announcing the news, adding that the upcoming lineup “features more variety and diversity than we have seen before”.

India, whose Bollywood film industry makes more productions each year than Hollywood, remains a challenging market for the streaming services.

Amazon’s Prime Video has become embroiled in legal cases and police complaints over a political drama Tandav deemed offensive to Hindu religious sentiments. The streaming platform apologised to viewers over some scenes.

Earlier this year, Netflix announced that it will release more than 70 movies this year across comedy, drama, family and other genres, a lineup that underscores the streaming service’s growing prominence in the film business. It added that it plans to release a new movie every week for the entire year of 2021.

  • SRK reportedly gearing up to be the first Bollywood hero to perform stunt on Burj Khalifa

SRK reportedly gearing up to be the first Bollywood hero to perform stunt on Burj Khalifa

Shah Rukh Khan is reportedly gearing up to perform a hi-octane action sequence inside the world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa. The stunt is expected to be part of his upcoming spy thriller Pathan.

According to reports, this is the first time a Bollywood film will be shot at the iconic building.

“The idea is to go one notch above what’s already done so far,” stated the report, quoting a source. “Apart from [Tom Cruise’s] Mission Impossible and the Fast and Furious franchise, not many films have been shot inside Burj Khalifa. Pathan will be among the first few Indian films (probably the first) to have actual visuals of the tower from inside.”

“A big-scale action scene centred around Burj Khalifa is in the offing from the team of Pathan,” added the source.

Sharing details about the scene, the report said: “It is a prolonged action sequence designed by an international stunt team, and one can expect spectacular visuals on the screen. It’s a culmination of [director] Siddharth Anand, [producer] Aditya Chopra, and SRK’s vision, to shoot a massive action scene at Burj Khalifa.”

“Don’t be surprised if you find SRK fighting on the top of the tower just like Tom Cruise when you watch Pathan on the big screen,” added the report. “However, all the details of this Burj Khalifa fight scene have been kept under wraps. It’s a car, bike, guns, blasts, hand to hand combats – get ready for action, that’s sleek and stylish.”

Featuring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham besides SRK, Pathan is being directed by Anand [Salaam Namaste, War, Bang Bang!]. Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan are reported to make cameo appearances in the film.

Pathan also marks SRK’s return to the big screen after a hiatus of more than two years. His last release was Zero in 2018 which was a commercial and box-office flop. It is also being reported that Khan is going all out for his upcoming film and was also spotted sporting a new look for it. It is expected to release at the end of 2021.

  • Kangana defines ‘porn singer’ for Ali Gul Pir

Ever since Rihanna extended her support for the farmers’ protest in India, Kangana Ranaut is having a meltdown and has been brutally attacking the singer on social media.

During the Twitter tirade, Kangana referred to Rihanna as a “porn singer”. The actor also accused the singer’s friend and Canadian politician Jagmeet Singh of being a “terrorist”.

“There is a Khalistan in his head also,” said Kangana about Jagmeet. “A porn star followed him and that’s his biggest achievement.”

Responding to Kangana’s tweet, Pakistani comedian Ali Gul Pir asked her to define “porn singer” for him.

“Porn singer? Is that a singer who makes music for porn films only?” asked Pir.

“They will refuse to sing for normal films? Please explain further. I didn’t know such a niche existed, just curious,” he added.

Replying to Pir’s tweet, Kangana explained the meaning of “porn singer” saying: “Someone who can’t sell music without making it sensual/adult. Unlike classical and genuine singers where the body is of no consequence.”

“A porn singer is hugely dependent on his/her flesh show off, private parts exposure, and mediocre talent. This makes them absolutely massy, and junk,” added Kangana.

“Like someone who doesn’t have talent, hasn’t done much work and relies on controversy and putting people down to stay in the news,” said Ali after Kangana explained the meaning to him.

“Thanks for clearing it out for me,” he added.

To further prove her point, Kangana tweeted pictures of herself and Rihanna side by side.

    What do the protesters want?

According to details, farmers hailing from northern Punjab and Haryana states, the two biggest agricultural producers, are demanding the repeal of laws passed by the parliament in September that they say will favour large corporate farms, devastate the earnings of many farmers and leave those who hold small plots behind as big corporations win out.

On the other hand, Modi has billed the laws as necessary to modernise Indian farming.

At the heart of these protests are Indian farmers’ fears that the government’s moves to introduce market reforms to the farming sector will leave them poorer — at a time when they are already frustrated over their declining clout as the government aims to turn India into a hub for global corporations.

  • India slams Rihanna, Greta Thunberg, Mia Khalifa for supporting farmers protest

Rihanna on Tuesday created a flutter in India by wading into months-long farmer protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agricultural reforms. Tens of thousands of young and old farmers have blocked roads leading into New Delhi for more than two months, sheltering in tractors from the cold.

A tractor rally by farmers last week in New Delhi turned violent. Police responded by shutting down the internet, digging ditches, driving nails into roads and topping barricades with razor wire to prevent farmers from entering the capital again.

“Why aren’t we talking about this?!” Rihanna said in a Twitter post, sharing a CNN article on the demonstrations with her 100.9 million followers on the platform, using the hashtag #FarmersProtest.

The same article was shared by teen climate activist Greta Thunberg, who also expressed solidarity with the farmers.

US Vice President Kamala Harris’ niece Meena Harris also extended her support to the protest, writing: “We ALL should be outraged by India’s internet shutdowns and paramilitary violence against farmer protesters.”

Similarly, Mia Khalifa and John Cusack also extended their support to the protesting farmers.

The international celebrity tweets triggered an online storm in India, where the farmers’ protests have become one of the biggest challenges to Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi since he took power in 2014. Modi has asserted the laws are necessary to modernise India’s agriculture sector, but farmers fear they would be placed at the mercy of big corporations.

India’s government has bristled at international remarks on the protests, calling them an “internal matter”.

In an official statement, the foreign ministry said that the celebrities needed “a proper understanding of the issues”.

“The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible,” read the statement, with the hashtags #IndiaTogether and #IndiaAgainstPropaganda.

“We would like to emphasise that these protests must be seen in the context of India’s democratic ethos and polity, and the efforts of the Government and the concerned farmer groups to resolve the impasse,” it added.

Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut, a vocal Modi supporter, responded to Rihanna by calling the protesting farmers “terrorists” and Rihanna a “fool” and an “American porn stars”. She also called Thunberg a “dumb and spoilt brat.”

Similarly, Akshay Kumar offered traction to MEA’s statement by sharing it and writing: “Let’s support an amicable resolution, rather than paying attention to anyone creating differences.”

India — the world’s biggest democracy — regularly uses internet shutdowns to limit information sharing during disturbances.
