25 years of DDLJ: Five things you didn’t know about the film

One of Bollywood’s most iconic films Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is celebrating 25 years. The lead actors of the film – Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol – got nostalgic about the film and changed their Twitter display names to Raj Malhotra and Simran, their characters from the movie.

Every 90s desi kid has seen the film multiple times and to celebrate the film’s silver jubilee, The Current brings to you five things you (probably) did not know about the film.

    1. SRK initially refused to play the role of Raj

SRK, who is also know as the ‘King of Romance’, reportedly did not want to be part of the project because he just couldn’t connect to the character of Raj Malhotra.

“Raj was unlike anything I had done before,” the actor had said. “There were films like Darr, Baazigar and Anjaam, in which I had portrayed negative characters. Also, I always felt that I wasn’t cut out to play any romantic type of character. So, when I was presented with the opportunity by Adi [director Aditya Chopra] and Yash Ji of essaying the role, I was excited to work with him but had no idea how to go about it and also if I would be able to do it well.”

He further shared: “Actually, I always felt Adi’s love for me made him cast me. I found the character endearing and sweet in the right way — the-over-the-topness is my contribution. It was one of those roles that I realised can do with me using a version of my real self so you might see some quirks, habits and mannerisms that were true to my off-screen persona, especially the sense of humour part.”

Khan also said that he is very shy around women and did not know how he would pull off the romantic scenes in DDLJ.

“I was told by many people that I looked unconventional, very different from what the perception of a leading man was. I did feel, maybe, not being handsome enough or as they called it then ‘chocolatey’ would make me unsuitable for romantic roles. Also, I am very shy and awkward with ladies, and I did not know how I would say all the loving, romantic bits,” he had said.

    2. Kajol thought that Simran was a “little boring”

Kajol, while talking about her character Simran had confessed that she had found her to be a “little boring”.

“I thought Simran was a little boring, to be honest, but I recognised her”, the actor said. “I realised there is a lot of Simran in almost everybody we know, there is always that wanting to do the right thing in someone. A lot of people don’t do the right thing but we always want to do that. You want to get that approval; you want to get that feeling of you are approved of and that you are doing something right in the world. So, yes Simran was like that. I thought she was just cool, a little old-fashioned but cool.”

    3. The film was made on a budget of INR 4 crores

The film, which was also shot in Europe and London, was made on a budget of INR 4 crores. Though it doesn’t seem like a lot by today’s standards, it was a pretty hefty amount back in the day. However, the money was well spent as the film went on to collect Rs 89 crores in India and INR 13.5 crores in the overseas market in the year of its release i.e. 1995.

    4. Raj and Simran’s car ride through Zurich had a special backseat guest

SRK and Kajol weren’t the only two enjoying a ride through Zurich in the former’s cherry red convertible. Director Aditya Chopra, who wanted to monitor the scene closely, was actually lying across the car’s backseat during all the romantic scenes.

    5. It is the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema

DDLJ is the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema. The film is still being shown at the Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai.

  • ‘Anushka Sharma is Afghan cricketer Rashid Khan’s wife,’ Google says

Afghan cricketer Rashid Khan was mistakenly referred to as Bollywood star Anushka Sharma’s husband on a Google search that has left fans in fits.

Social media surely had a field day after the little gaffe on the search engine that seemingly stems from the cricket champ’s crush on her and Preity Zinta.

As per a few media reports, Rashid was recently asked in an interview to name his favourite woman actors. Rashid said he loved to watch Anushka and Preity. That is all his fans needed to ship Rashid and Anushka.

The many mentions all over the internet might have caused the Google search engine to goof up the same way United States (US) President Donald Trump’s pictures show up if one searches for “idiot”.

The B-Town diva is actually married to Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli, and the two are also expecting their first child together.

Anushka also attended Saturday’s Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Chennai Super Kings match of the ongoing season of Indian Premier League (IPL). She even blew Virat a kiss from the visitors’ area, which caught everyone’s attention. Virat, who scored an unbeaten 90 in the match, even gestured towards his wife after his half-century.

Rashid, on the other hand, says he will “get engaged and married once Afghanistan wins the cricket World Cup”.

Guess which Bollywood superstar just followed Mahira Khan on Instagram

Pakistan-India tensions may be at an all-time high at this point but Mahira Khan’s Indian fan base continues to grow. The latest Bollywood celebrity to follow Mahira on Instagram is none other than Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan. Roshan follows a total of 170 people only on the social media app and Mahira is one of them.

Given the political tensions between the two neighbouring countries, it is unlikely that we will see them in a film or project together but they sure would make a lovely pair.

Mahira’s Bollywood career may have been short-lived but the actor made a mark there with her performance in Raees opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Besides, she has often been spotted with B-town celebrities at different events and award functions.

With Ranbir Kapoor at the Global Teacher Prize in Dubai

Other Bollywood stars who follow Mahira on Instagram include Sonam Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Ayushman Khurana and Gauri Khan.

  • Kangana Ranaut calls Mumbai ‘Pakistan’ after authorities demolish her offices

Kangana Ranaut calls Mumbai ‘Pakistan’ after authorities demolish her offices

Kangana Ranaut has referred to Mumbai as ‘Pakistan’ after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished her office in Bandra. Sharing pictures of the demolition taking place in her office, Kangana wrote “Pakistan”, along with the hashtag ‘Death of Democracy’.

Her successive tweet read: “I am never wrong and my enemies prove again and again this is why my Mumbai is ‘PoK’ (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir) now.”

According to details, BMC had listed 14 “violations” at the offices of Manikarnika Films, Ranaut’s movie production house. The bungalow, which the actress had bought three years ago, is listed as a residential property by the BMC.

As per the notice, violations included: merging of two bungalows, converting a ground-floor toilet into an office cabin, converting a storeroom into a kitchen, making an unauthorised pantry in the ground floor, adding toilets near the storeroom and a parking area, illegal partitions in the first-floor living room, an illegal meeting room in the pooja room, converting a balcony into a habitable area besides a floor extension. At the time of the demolition, Kangana was not in Mumbai but was in fact on her way to the city.

The demolition work was stopped midway today after the Bombay High Court ordered a stop to the demolition and served notice to the BMC, which is controlled by the Chief Minister’s Shiv Sena.

Ranaut reacted to the demolition by terming the act as the death of democracy. She also questioned how the officials could demolish the structure when such procedure is banned till September 30 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kangana has sparked controversy with her recent comments about the Mumbai Police and Maharashtra. In response to a remark by Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut where he asked her not to come back to the city after she claimed she felt unsafe in the city, Kangana had compared Mumbai with ‘PoK’.

Earlier, Feroze Khan, Muneeb Butt and Momina Mustehsan called out Kangana for unnecessarily dragging in Pakistan in all her arguments.

  • Akshay Kumar launches FAU-G after India bans PUBG

After India banned PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds (PUBG) along with 117 other Chinese apps, Akshay Kumar announced the launching of a multiplayer action-game, Fearless and United: Guards (FAU-G). According to the actor, the game is in “line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “AtmaNirbhar Bharat’”. ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ is the vision of PM Modi of making India a self-reliant nation.

Kumar shared that through the game, players “will also learn about the sacrifices of our soldiers.” He added that 20 percent of its net revenue would be donated to ‘Bharat Ke Veer’ trust – which gives homage and support to the country’s brave hearts.

Talking about the new game, Kumar said: “For youngsters in India, gaming is becoming an important form of entertainment. With FAU-G, I’m hoping that as they play the game they will learn about the sacrifices of our soldiers and also contribute to the families of the martyrs; and with this, each one of us has the ability to support PM Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar”.

According to details, FAU-G is based on real scenarios encountered by the Indian Security Forces to deal with both domestic and foreign threats. It is expected to launch at the end of October with its first-level set in the Galwan Valley backdrop followed by third-person shooting gameplay in the subsequent releases. The game will be available on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

Earlier, Ajay Devgn had announced a film based on the tensions between Indian soldiers and Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley. According to details, the film will narrate the “story of the sacrifice of 20 Indian army men who fought the Chinese army”.

Meanwhile, recent reports have stated that India and China have agreed to work towards reducing tensions along their contested border, following a meeting of the defence ministers of the two countries. Both sides had deployed additional forces along the frontier running through the western Himalayas after a clash in June, during which 20 Indian soldiers were killed in hand-to-hand fighting. China has not released casualty figures for its troops.

  • Indians are having a meltdown over Aamir Khan’s meeting with Turkish first lady Emine Erdoğan

Aamir Khan, who is currently in Turkey for the shooting of his film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, has met the Turkish first lady, Emine Erdoğan, drawing strong reactions from Indians, who are not happy with the meeting that took place Saturday, India’s Independence day.

According to reports, Aamir had requested the meeting, as he wanted to update Erdoğan about the work of Paani Foundation, a non-profit organisation set up by the actor and his wife Kiran Rao.

The main reason behind Indians’ outrage was that Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan has always condemned Indian brutality in occupied Kashmir and extended his support to Pakistan and Kashmiris following the troubled valley’s illegal annexation.

The Kashmir conflict can be solved not by conflict or oppression, but on the basis of justice and fairness, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had said in his address to Pakistani parliament in Islamabad.

The Turkish leader had also called President of Pakistan on Eidul Azha and shared their views on different issues.

A tweet by the president’s office read, “President Dr Arif Alvi and President Erdoğan exchanged Eidul Azha greetings in a telephonic conversation. Important matters, including Kashmir and COVID-19 were discussed.”

With Aamir meeting Erdoğan, Indians called him “anti-national” and expressed their disappointment.

  • ‘Dil Bechara’ leaves you wanting more

‘Dil Bechara’ leaves you wanting more

There are often times in life when you’re at loss for words. And writing this review is one of those moments because there is so much to say but no words to express my emotions. Sushant Singh Rajput passed away on June 14 due to suicide but the mystery surrounding his sudden death remains, leaving one restless and searching for answers. His unexpected death impacted Bollywood fans across the world in a way no one could have imagined. In midst of all this, Disney Hotstar announced that they would release the actor’s last film digitally on their streaming platform and make it available to everyone with the aim to celebrate his life and legacy. The move was welcomed by his fans as they felt that the film would give them the closure they have been searching for. But unfortunately, the film ends up widening the void instead of closing it because, by the time the credits roll in, you’re emotional, teary-eyed and wishing that the film would never end because you just want to continue watching Sushant weave his magic on screen.

Dil Bechara is the official Hindi adaption of The Fault in Our Stars. It is the story of two cancer patients Kizie and Manny, whose paths cross at a cancer support group. Though Kizie initially finds Manny ‘irritating and annoying’, Manny with his goofy antics soon becomes the centre of Kizie’s universe. He makes her laugh and forget her worries and gives her ‘boring’ life a whole new meaning. The two bond over music and movies and become inseparable. But life throws them another curveball and Manny, whose cancer was believed to have gone, returns leaving him terminally ill.

While Dil Bechara Sushant’s last film, it is debutante Sanjana Sanghani’s first film and also marks the directorial debut of renowned casting director Mukesh Chhabra. Sanjana makes a sound debut and is confident in her role but for me, the film is only Sushant, who steals the shows with his infectious smile and on-screen presence. From the minute he comes on the screen to the minute he says Seri in the last shot, my eyes were glued to him throughout and I wished the film didn’t end. A master performer, Sushant did not let his fans down with his swan song. His expressions and body language were brilliant and he slipped into Manny’s character with finesse.

Given the circumstances surrounding the film’s release, emotions are naturally running high and it is impossible to not relate Sushant’s untimely death with Manny’s. In particular, the last scene, when everyone gathers to watch Manny’s film. At that point, the lines between real and reel were so blurred you forgot you were watching a movie because everything just felt so real.

    The last scene

A.R Rahman’s music beautifully blended in with the mood of the film and the setting of the frames, giving the film a magical touch. My personal favourite from the album has to be Main Tumhara.

Some of the film’s dialogues were also amazing and I see them becoming a thing. One of them – “Jeena kab hai aur marna kab hai yeh hum decide nahi kartay, laikin jeena kaisay hain, yeh hum decide kar saktay hain” – has already become iconic and synonymous with Sushant.

As much as I want to only heap praises on the film for having its heart in the right place and being a touching watch, it would be unfair to ignore its shortcomings which mainly lied in the direction and editing. The story and characters are underdeveloped, especially Manny’s. All through the film, I kept waiting for a backstory on Manny – just some basic details would have sufficed. However, apart from the fact that he’s rich and doesn’t need to work, we don’t get much on Manny or his family. Sushant’s portrayal of Manny was the only saving grace of an otherwise poorly written character.

More so, the editing is choppy and appears to have been lazily done. Given that the film was a tribute to Sushant, I wish the makers had put in more effort in post-production. The film currently runs for one hour forty minutes and could have easily been stretched to two hours to tie up loose ends.

Since its release, I’ve watched Dil Bechara twice and will perhaps watch it a couple of times more but only for Sushant. He effortlessly carried the weight of the entire film and pulled it through despite its shortcomings. Sushant lit up the screen every time he made an appearance and I wish the film was longer so he could have stayed with us more.

In a recent interview with BBC Asian Network, Katrina revealed that she did her own makeup for a lot of her films and superhit songs including Sheila ki Jawani and Chikni Chameli because it was easier and faster.

“Even Jab Tak Hai Jaan was all my own makeup. Ek Tha Tiger is all my own makeup,” added the actor.

    Sheila ki Jawani

Sharing the story behind this, Katrina said: “So I had a makeup artist, his name was Subhash dada. What happened is that I realised I had a knack for it and I picked it up pretty quickly. It started with me saying ‘Let me do the liner’, then it was like ‘Let me do the blush’ and before you know it, I did everything. So it was just the thing that I was so much faster. Because I just saw and I picked it up, whatever tips that I would need to know. I would observe different makeup artists and pick up what I liked.”

“I know it’s unusual but that’s the way it is,” said the actor. “This is why I am so passionate about Kay Beauty (Katrina’s cosmetic brand). Because I know makeup. It has been what, 15 years since I have been doing my own makeup.”

  • VIDEO: Ex-RAW officer says Dawood Ibrahim murdered Sushant Singh

VIDEO: Ex-RAW officer says Dawood Ibrahim murdered Sushant Singh

Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide case has become a mystery with various theories being linked to it.

Amid speculations regarding sudden death of the actor, a former officer of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) — India’s foreign intelligence agency — has claimed that Sushant was “murdered by [notorious Indian crime boss and drug dealer] Dawood Ibrahim”.

According to NK Sood, Sushant was murdered by Dawood with a “foolproof plan”. In a widely-shared video, the ex-RAW officer stated that though Dawood doesn’t live in Mumbai now but still has a strong hold over the city and Bollywood.

“Many B-town celebrities participate in the events organised by Dawood’s team abroad and help the gangster earn money which is used for funding terrorism. The celebrities also receive a huge sum of money in return,” said Sood.

Sushant was reportedly getting death threats over the phone before his demise, and thus the actor had even changed his SIM almost 50 times. The actor was so scared for his life that he had even slept in his car at a remote place fearing that someone might kill him at his house.

Sood claimed that Sushant was murdered by professional criminals and that was why the CCTV cameras at his apartment complex were shut off a day before his demise and the duplicate keys of his room were also misplaced.

All this evidence is enough to conclude that the actor was murdered, said the ex-RAW officer and added that Sushant’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, his close friend Sandeep Singh and his domestic help were well aware of the trouble brewing in Sushant’s life.

“But they chose to stay away from it and leave the actor alone.”

He also alleged that the police were trying to put up a show that they were probing the case sincerely, but in reality, they were trying to save the culprit.
