    19 dead as thunderstorms,winds lash Karachi

    At least 19 people died and several others were injured in multiple incidents as rain and strong winds hit different parts of Karachi.


    Rainfall with gusts was recorded in North Nazimabad, North Karachi, Surjani, FB Area, Saddar and Clifton. Similar conditions were reported in Cantt, Railway Colony, Delhi Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulshan Jamal and Garden.

    The Met Office said rain was also reported in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Gulzar-i-Hijri, Tower, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Hassan Square, Manghopir, SITE, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad and Defence.

    Power supply was suspended in several areas as the rain began, while outages were later reported in Moinabad Alamgir Society, Shadman Town 14-A, parts of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Defence Phases 1 and 2, Akhtar Colony, Kashmir Colony and parts of North Karachi. 

    The city’s power system could not sustain the load, and several areas remained without electricity for hours.

    “Our field teams remain on-ground, working round the clock to restore power in affected areas. Despite water-logging challenges, safety remains our top priority. We value your patience and understanding as we continue these efforts,” K-Electric stated on X.

    The Meteorological Department reported that wind speed reached 90 kilometres per hour on Shahrah-e-Faisal and 97 kilometres per hour in Mauripur. It said Korangi recorded 55.6mm of rainfall, followed by 22mm in Mauripur and 15mm in DHA Phase-II.


    Other areas including Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Keamari, Airport Old Area, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Saddar Town and Jinnah Terminal received lower amounts.

    Trees fell in multiple locations, disrupting traffic. Near the Clifton driving licence branch, a tree collapsed, trapping two people. Reports quoted officials that Ishfaq, 32, and his mother were on a motorbike when they took shelter under a tree, which fell due to strong winds.

    A Rescue 1122 team shifted Ishfaq to hospital while efforts continued to retrieve his mother. In Mohammad Ali Society, a billboard fell on Tipu Sultan Road.

    In Baldia’s Mowach Goth, 13 people died after a wall collapsed, rescue officials confirmed. DIG-South Syed Asad Raza said that several people were sitting beside the wall of the Baldia Town Telephone Exchange within the limits of Saeedabad police station when it collapsed due to strong winds. 

    A rescue spokesperson said that three people were injured and shifted to hospital along with the bodies, adding that search operations were ongoing. The bodies were moved to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi.

    SSP (Senior Superintendent of Police) Keamari said that the roof of the second floor collapsed onto the first floor, adding that the structure was not a residential building. He noted that police and rescue teams were present at the site and further people could be trapped under the debris.

    The Sindh chief minister took notice of the incident and directed the district administration and rescue authorities to respond.

    Sindh Interior Minister Zia ul Hassan Lanjar and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited the site and directed teams to retrieve those trapped and shift the injured for treatment.

    In Quaidabad’s Majeed Colony, a man and a woman died after a wall collapsed, while one person was injured. In Landhi, a man and his wife were killed when the roof of their house caved in. They were identified as Sher Ali, 48, and Riasat, 45.

    In Malir’s Yaroo Goth, one person died after being struck by lightning. In Korangi, a man died after a tree fell on him, while in Korangi 3½, a woman died after a roof collapsed.

    Water accumulated in several areas after the rain, affecting traffic flow on major roads.

    The Meteorological Department said that further rainfall is not expected during the night but may occur after noon. It added that rain with wind and thunder is likely in parts of the city, with a possibility of hail at isolated locations, while another weather system between March 24 and 27 could bring rain to Karachi and other areas of Sindh.

    Cause of death revealed for investigator who died suddenly during ‘Annabelle’ doll tour

    A cause of death has been confirmed for Dan Rivera, a paranormal investigator who was found dead in July following an event in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, that featured the infamous Annabelle doll.

    Rivera, a 54-year-old Army veteran and senior lead investigator with the Connecticut-based New England Society for Psychic Research, died on July 13, just a day after the event involving the allegedly haunted doll known from horror folklore.

    On Thursday, September 4, Adams County Coroner Francis Dutrow announced that Rivera’s death was cardiac-related and classified as natural. “Mr Rivera had a known history of cardiac issues, which were consistent with the findings,” Dutrow stated.

    He also clarified that the doll was not present in the room at the time of his passing.

    Earlier, a report from the Pennsylvania State Police had also described the circumstances of Rivera’s death. According to the report, officers responded to a hotel in Straban Township, Adams County, where Rivera was found deceased in his room by hotel staff.

    Authorities noted that there was nothing suspicious or out of the ordinary at the scene.

    Rivera had reportedly been with colleagues earlier that morning but told them he was feeling unwell and returned to his hotel room. It remains unclear what specific symptoms he was experiencing.

    At the time of the incident, Rivera was part of a tour in Gettysburg showcasing Annabelle, which the New England Society for Psychic Research claims is “demonically possessed”.

    Annabelle’s origins trace back to 1968, when she was reportedly gifted to a nursing student, who later brought the doll to the apartment she shared with her roommate.

    The doll has been a part of pop culture in recent years after it was featured in The Conjuring film series, latest instalment of which was released in the United States (US) on Sept 4.

    The host asked, “If you had to write your own death scene, how would you write it?”


    “I would write it so that there’s just a mention that I’ve passed away quietly in the background, without showing any dramatic scene or anyone crying over it,” The Meray Pass Tum ho actor replied.

    He has starred in dramas such as Shaista Shaista, Durr-e-Shehwar, Suno Chanda 2, Sinf-e-Aahan and Radd.

    Currently Syed Ahmed is starring in Sunn Mere Dil, written by controversial writer Khalil-Ur Rehman Qamar and directed by Haseeb Hassan.

    Prisoners rape, kill fellow inmate in Adiala Jail

    Jail inmates have raped and killed a fellow prisoner in Adiala Jail, Public TV has reported.

    The victim, Sabil, was first raped and then hanged to death by his fellow prisoners. He was locked in the mill of Adiala Jail Cell 2 where the harrowing incident took place.

    The jail administration has registered a complaint against four suspects who have been detained.

    According to the FIR, the victim was raped by Waqas, Asif, Naqash, and Bilal by tying his hands and feet and then killed him by putting a cloth noose around his neck.


    The Jailer has said that Waqas pressed down on Sabil’s throat and chest with his foot, quoted PNP.


    On the morning of January 1, the deceased was found lying unconscious in cell 2. His death was confirmed upon being transferred to the prison hospital. There were marks on the neck of the deceased which made the cause of death suspicious.


    Police say that the body of the deceased prisoner has been handed over to his family after an autopsy.

    Tributes pour in after senior politician Sartaj Aziz’s death

    Senior politician, diplomat, and former finance minister Sartaj Aziz passed away at the age of 94 in Islamabad on Tuesday night.


    Born in February 1929 in Nowshera, Aziz was a veteran politician from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He served in key governmental posts in his long political career, including as the minister for finance and economic affairs. He also remained a senator from 1985 to 1999 and was elected as an advisor on national security and foreign affairs in the 2013 general elections.


    Aziz’s vast political career spanned academia, civil service, and public office holding.


    Besides serving as the federal minister, Aziz also fulfilled responsibilities as assistant president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and director of the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Commodities and Trade Division.


    The two-time finance minister was considered a respected figure in the national discourse, bearing keen insights and analysis on economic and political issues.


    PML-N announced the death of the senior politician on X (formerly Twitter). “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mr. Sartaj Aziz. A stalwart, a true icon, and a towering figure! His contributions to the nation and towards the party will never be forgotten.”

    Other politicians and his colleagues started posting pictures of him and recalled the time, they served with him. Ahsan Iqbal said he had the “honour of working with him very closely and will never forget his affection and guidance”.


    Shehbaz Sharif termed it as “not just a personal loss but a loss for the nation.”


    Miftah Ismail said, “Sartaj Aziz’s passing is surely the end of an era.”


    Engineer Khurram Dastgir called it a profound loss to the nation.


    Reacting to the demise of a veteran politician, President Arif Alvi expressed deep grief and solidarity with the survivors of the deceased. He also prayed for Aziz’s forgiveness and patience for his family.


    Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar also expressed sorrow and said that his contributions to the country will always be remembered.


    Career diplomat Maleeha Lodhi paid tribute to him by saying, “Pakistan will be poorer without him.”


    Fellow Academic Adil Najam lauded him by saying, “Thank you, Sartaj sb, for a life well lived; a life of unwavering commitment to Pakistan.”


    Senior journalist, Nasim Zehra showed her respect towards Sartaj by praising him for his “commitment to the very best for Pakistan as Foreign and Finance Minister.”


    Fellow diplomat, Kristof Duwaerts tweeted, “I had the pleasure of interacting with H.E. late Sartaj Aziz on a number of occasions during my time in Pakistan.”


    Indian journalist Aditya Raj Kaul, praised him for being a gentleman and a great diplomat.


    Social worker and activist Khaleel Tetaly lauded Sartaj Aziz as a key advocate for community-led development in Pakistan.


    Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad extended condolences on the passing of Sartaj Aziz for serving Pakistan with his exceptional talent in various capacities for over seven decades.
