Pakistan’s first computer chip plant to be set up in Faisalabad

Pakistan’s first-ever computer chip manufacturing unit will be established in Faisalabad, with the Punjab government also allocating 50 acres of land for a state-of-the-art expo centre in the M-3 Industrial Estate, Provincial Minister for Industries, Commerce and Investment Chaudhary Shafay Hussain announced.

According to Hussain, the Punjab government has made important choices to expedite the colonisation of the Allama Iqbal and M-3 industrial estates.

He said a community centre would be built for foreign workers, alongside completion of boundary walls and the establishment of a dedicated monitoring cell in both estates.

He noted that similar actions are being taken to fully develop industrial estates throughout the province and that efforts are underway to give better banking and commercial facilities to industrial units operating in these zones.

Speaking about industries related to agriculture, the minister stated that the government has started a program to increase cotton production, with research and development concentrated on producing high-yield, disease-resistant seeds.

During a briefing on the Small Industrial Estate in Faisalabad, Hussain stated that interest-free loans are available via the Asan Karobar Scheme and that infrastructure-related concerns are being addressed.

Additionally, he declared that in 2026, three women’s training facilities would-be built-in Gujrat, Layyah, and Sahiwal; the second phase of the facility would-be built-in Faisalabad.

He further revealed that Faisalabad and Shymkent, a major industrial city in Kazakhstan, are being declared twin cities, a move he said would open new avenues of industrial and trade cooperation.

Speaking on the occasion, FCCI President Farooq Yousaf Sheikh said the pace of colonisation at the M-3 and Allama Iqbal industrial estates had improved, but warned that a growing trust deficit between government institutions and the private sector was hurting exports.

He alleged that as many as 32 departments were harassing industrial units, adding that containers cleared by customs officials were still being stopped en route to ports.

Sheikh also highlighted the sharp rise in production costs due to soaring electricity and gas prices, and said delays in refunds now stretching to 90 days instead of the earlier 15 had triggered a liquidity crunch for exporters.

He said exports could be pushed to $100 billion if a business-friendly environment and consistent policies were ensured.

FCCI Vice President Engr Asim Munir, along with executive members and former office-bearers, participated in the question-and-answer session.

Armed robbers gang-rape woman after tying up her husband

A woman was reportedly gang-raped by armed robbers on Tuesday in Faisalabad’s Sandal Bar area after the robbers tied up her husband with a shalwar drawstring belt.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the couple was returning home from the Agriculture University Hostel on a motorcycle when two armed men stopped them on the Chak No. 62 JB Channan motorway bridge.

The armed men were described as one of average height, aged around 17–18 years with a skinny build, and the other around 25–26 years with a slim build; both were wearing shalwar kameez.

According to the FIR, the armed men stopped the couple at gunpoint and snatched Rs800 in cash, a mobile phone, and the woman’s identity card before taking the husband to a nearby sugarcane field, where they tied him up.

The suspects then also took the woman to the sugarcane field, and one of the robbers called a third accomplice on a motorcycle. The third suspect, described as tall and well-built, arrived at the scene.

“All three of them raped my wife one by one and then fled the scene,” the FIR read, noting that the victim’s husband initially searched for the suspects himself before reporting the incident to the police the next day, on Wednesday, via the emergency helpline.

Meanwhile, as per the authorities, the victim’s medical examination has been completed, and Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) samples have been sent for forensic analysis.

Police have launched a search operation after filing a case against unidentified suspects under robbery and sexual assault charges.

Geofencing of the crime scene led to the detention of three suspects, and further investigations are underway, as per the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).

The horrifying crime comes years after two robbers gang-raped a mother of two children on the motorway within the Gujjarpura police’s jurisdiction in September 2020.

The woman was driving to Gujranwala in her car when she was forced to stop at the Gujjarpura section of the motorway after running out of fuel.

According to reports, she immediately called a relative and sent him her location, who asked her to also dial the Motorway Police helpline—130—from which she reportedly received no response.

Meanwhile, two robbers approached the car, broke the window, and took the woman and her children to nearby bushes where they raped the mother repeatedly in front of the children. They also snatched her purse, which contained Rs100,000 in cash, one bracelet, car registration papers, and three Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards.

Mother, two children killed in triple homicide in Faisalabad

A mother and her two kids were reportedly murdered in Chak 632 GB, Lundianwala, Faisalabad, on Friday. The authorities have begun an investigation, and attempts are ongoing to arrest the perpetrators.

According to police reports, the victims — 25-year-old Iram Bibi and her kids, Fatima, two, and Kiran, five — were discovered dead at their home. Initial reports suggest they were assaulted with a sharp-edged weapon while sleeping. The incident was reported to the police, who responded immediately.

After acquiring information, a police team led by SSP Investigation Faisalabad, SP Jaranwala Zia-ul-Haq, DSP Jaranwala, and SHO Lundianwala Haq Nawaz arrived at the crime scene with a large force. The location was blocked off, and forensic investigators gathered evidence to determine the facts of the incident.

During the initial inquiry, officials noticed that the victim’s husband, Ibrahim, and brother, Ismail, were not present at the scene. Their unexpected departure raised suspicions about their involvement. Further investigation and witness accounts identified the two as the prime suspects in the crime. Police sources later confirmed that both suspects are wanted for their involvement in the case.

Following standard protocols, the deceased’s bodies were taken into police custody and sent to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Jaranwala for post-mortem examination. Medical records will provide more information on the cause and timing of death, supporting the police investigation.

Justice still pending as Jaranwala incident marks one year

The Christian community in Jaranwala is still awaiting justice one year after the mob attack on their community. The government of Pakistan had promised to provide justice to the victims of the vandalized Christian community and to punish those involved in the violence, but their efforts appear to have been ineffective.

On August 16, 2023, two Christian residents were allegedly accused of blasphemy, a charge that was later disproved. Despite this, a large mob went on to vandalize 20 churches and around 80 Christian homes.

Amnesty International has reported that more than 40 percent of the affected Christian families are still awaiting government compensation.

Out of the 5,213 suspects, 380 were arrested, but 305 individuals were released on court orders.

Only 85 out of 146 families have received compensation so far, while 61 are still waiting for their due.

‘’We saw our houses in complete shambles as the building would soon collapse. To date, we have received no support. My husband is unemployed for a year because no one hires him (due to stigma). Many people received the promised compensation of 2 million rupees (US$7,200), but we did not receive it’’ said Jaranwala resident Christian Khalida Bano.

The apex court disapproved the police report on the Jaranwala incident in February 2024, stating that it lacked the required information.

One year later, trials against the culprits have yet to commence.
