FIA nabs gang suspected of trafficking Pakistani women to China

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) conducted an operation at Islamabad Airport intercepting a network involved in trafficking Pakistani girls to China.

Three people were detained for trying to transport a female overseas under false pretenses of marriage and work, the FIA spokeswoman said. A Pakistani female passenger traveling with the suspects was also detained for questioning.

Muhammad Nauman, Abdul Rehman, and Shugui Yusuf  were taken into custody by FIA.  According to authorities, the network targeted several families who were struggling financially.

In order to get the papers and personal information of Chinese nationals, the suspects convinced females to marry them. Paul, a Chinese agent, assisted Agents Abdul Rehman and Muhammad Nauman in the procedure.

In return for large sums of money, Paul arranged Chinese clients, according to the FIA. With an initial payment of Rs. 150,000, the suspects in this case reached an agreement with the girl’s mother for a sum of Rs.1 million.

The police are checking whether the network has connections to other human trafficking organizations. Each arrested suspect’s part is being examined, and more evidence is being gathered. Additionally, efforts are underway to find other members of the gang.

For additional legal processes, the suspects have been sent by the FIA to the Islamabad Anti-Human Trafficking Unit. To determine the extent of the network’s activities, officials will review transaction logs, communication histories, and any associated documents.

Authorities have declared that legal action will be taken against all parties engaged in the case, which is being handled in accordance with current human trafficking laws.

NAB contacts FIA to extradite Malik Riaz via Interpol, source

In an interesting development, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has written a letter to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to extradite property tycoon Malik Riaz in Pakistan, a source said.

As per a source, the FIA will secure Riaz’s extradition from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and then hand him over to NAB.

Interpol is an intergovernmental organisation that facilitates police cooperation among 196 member countries.

Interpol’s work focuses on four pressing areas of international crime: terrorism, cybercrime, organised crime, and financial crime with anti-corruption efforts.

Following former premier Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi’s conviction in the £190 million case, commonly known as the Al-Qadir Trust case, on January 17, the accountability watchdog said in a press release that Riaz was an absconder in the same case and they had already frozen a number of his assets.

“Mr Malik Riaz is residing in Dubai, UAE. He has recently launched a project for the construction of luxury apartments in Dubai, UAE. The general public at large is hereby advised and warned to refrain from investing in the stated project. If the general public at large invests in the stated project, their actions would tantamount to money laundering, for which they may face criminal/ legal proceedings,” the press release read.

The controversial property tycoon, in response to the NAB press release against his Dubai-based project, took to X (formerly Twitter) last week, warning, “I am holding back, but there is a storm within me. If this dam breaks, then everyone’s façade will shatter. Don’t forget that the secrets of the past 25–30 years are preserved along with evidence.”

“My decision yesterday was the same as it is today: no matter how much oppression you inflict, I (Malik Riaz) will not testify,” he said.

  • BEWARE: Group ‘honey-trapping’ youngsters in blasphemy on social media

BEWARE: Group ‘honey-trapping’ youngsters in blasphemy on social media

A report issued by the Special Branch in Punjab has revealed that over 400 young boys and girls are reportedly being persecuted in Pakistan under the blasphemy law for sharing blasphemous content on the internet.

The report stated that the suspicious gang “The Blasphemy Business” trapped young boys and girls into “committing” blasphemy and then reported them to the Federal Investigating Agency (FIA). The gang is reportedly doing this heinous act for financial gain.

Young prisoners under blasphemy charges are reportedly from diverse fields, including Hafiz-e-Quran, software engineers, electrical, mechanical, civil and chemical engineers. All of the blasphemy victims belong to poor and middle-class families, the report said.

FIA confirmed receiving the report on the “The Blasphemy Business” group in January 2024, in which it mentioned that a special gang is a complainant in 90 per cent of blasphemy cases, the document added.

Moreover, the document noted that reportedly the “The Blasphemy Business” has been headed by a lawyer, Rao Abdur Raheem Advocate, based in Islamabad, whose Whatsapp account is linked to a mobile number in Spain that was reportedly involved in malpractice and under his chairmanship, the gang is involved in trapping youth in blasphemy cases and then extorting money from the accused.

In an interview with Fact Focus, responding to the extreme punishment and the possibility of unintentional errors by some of the accused, the lawyer said, “If any part of the body is affected by cancer, that part is cut out. There is no other solution.”

How did the group trap naive youth?

The report disclosed that obscene images with objectionable material were sent to the victims via WhatsApp; when the receiver protested, the sender denied that he initially sent it and then asked for the image to be shown.

The recipient would resend the picture, after which the sender would block them; later, the recipient would be arrested and accused of originating the blasphemous content, the report said.

The report explained that the gang further runs social media groups named “United Mazhabi Story, Laiba Mazhabi King and Azad Mazhabi Ilam,” where their modus operandi of trapping innocents is the same as described above.

The 40 families of victims of blasphemy cases peacefully protested outside the National Press Club Islamabad on October 2, 2024, and demanded the federal government set up an inquiry commission under the Inquiry Commission Act to investigate the issue.

Prominent journalist Ali Hamza reported that Advocate Usman Warraich is representing the victim’s family in a petition filed in Islamabad High Court (IHC) to probe the Special Branch Punjab Report.

Warraich said: “At least 400 families are suffering because of these allegations.”

“We were instructed in a letter to bring your son [at the police station] for inquiry. As responsible citizens, we produced our son before police….when we informed them [police] that our son is blind and incapable of committing any wrongdoing, taftishi (investigator) put my son behind bars and demanded one lac rupees for my son’s release,” alleged victim’s mother, Saeeda Bibi, while speaking to Voicepkdotnet on Sunday (January 12) in Islamabad.

“We are poor people; they [police] conducted two raids on our home, and broke down its walls,” she haltingly said, adding that she has been fighting her son’s case for three years, and the legal expenses have led them to the brink of bankruptcy.

Sri Lankan team attack: Cop nominated for gallantry award was not even there

Prominent journalist Shahid Aslam on Sunday, while citing an Intelligence Bureau (IB) report, revealed that the government withdrew from awarding gallantry awards to Director Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Lahore Sarfaraz Virk after finding that he was falsely nominated for the awards.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Shahid Aslam quoted an IB report as saying that the director of FIA Lahore had claimed that he, as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), escorted the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009 when terrorists attacked them in Lahore.

“He [Sarfaraz Virk], as ASP, claimed to have escorted the guest team out of the attack venue by exposing himself to danger. The government announced a gallantry award for him. Later, it was proved that neither was he present at the scene nor he had done anything remarkable. The announcement of the said award was later withdrawn,” the report said.

On March 3, 2009, militants with rocket launchers, grenades and rifles attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team bus when they were headed towards Lahore Qaddafi Cricket Stadium for day three of their second test match against Pakistan.

The militant attack had left seven people killed, including six policemen, and another 20 wounded. Seven members of the visiting cricket team, including the assistant coach and umpire, were injured.

The report accused the director of FIA Lahore of various crimes, including malpractice and illegally acquiring money from Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO).

Under the chairmanship of Sarfaraz Virk, FIA was allegedly involved in acquiring money from LESCO under kickbacks, Aslam said while citing an IB report.

The journalist claimed that the report was forwarded to Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on 13 September 2024. In response, the PM ordered  an inquiry against him.

According to a notification issued from the PM Office in September 2024, under the subject ‘Corrupt Practice – Connivance of LESCO & FIA Officials,’ the Interior Division was directed to take action against the officers/officials pointed out in the enclosed report within a week and submit a compliance report.

“Establishment division to place the report in the dossiers of the officers identified and keep a watch on their performance in future,” the PMO notification reads.

However, Shahid Aslam claimed that the secretary of the interior, who was responsible for initiating the inquiry against the Sarfraz Virk, has not yet taken any action.

  • Three arrested for sharing AI video of Maryam Nawaz, UAE president

Three arrested for sharing AI video of Maryam Nawaz, UAE president

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested three suspects involved in editing and sharing of a fake video of Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz with United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

As per the details, fake AI-generated videos of the Punjab CM started doing the rounds over the internet after Maryam, accompanied by Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, greeted the UAE president upon his arrival at the Rahim Yar Khan Airport on December 5.

Reports on Saturday quoted FIA officials as saying that 20 social media accounts responsible for sharing the fake media had also been identified. Three suspects have so far been, and the FIA is also conducting raids to arrest the remaining culprits, they added.

A joint investigation team (JIT) to widen the scope of investigation under the chairmanship of Additional Director Sarfraz Chaudhry has been constituted with Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad deputy directors as members, reports said.

Action comes after Punjab CM’s office approached the FIA’s cybercrime wing for a probe into the doctored pictures and videos. The FIA had earlier assured the government of cracking down on those responsible for uploading and sharing the altered content.

As part of the investigation, the FIA’s cybercrime wing had said, it would conduct inquiries across the country. The agency had warned that individuals found involved in uploading or sharing of the fake images would face legal consequences.

It merits a mention that deepfakes or AI-generated visuals are becoming increasingly convincing and easier to make. In May 2022, the FIA’s Cybercrime Wing arrested a man in Peshawar on charges of circulating fake videos of CM Maryam on social media.

Doctored images and fake videos are used to discredit individuals’ role in society, experts say, adding that politicians, actresses and other well-known persons are especially targeted by those involved in such activities.

Earlier, Punjab Information Minister Azma Zahid Bokhari also fell victim to a deepfake video.

Reacting to the viral video, the info minister had stressed the need to urgently tackle the menace. Bokhari had asserted that the criminal justice system needed to be modernised to counter such issues, as deepfake videos were frequently used to target women.

“I was shattered when it came to my knowledge,” the minister had told a foreign media outlet, vowing to do every thing in her power for the protection of digital rights of the people.

Imran Khan to face trial over controversial post

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered a case against the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, for a controversial post made on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Recalling the tweet posted by former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, FIA declared his post controversial, claiming that it was inciting government officials to mutiny.

The FIA Cybercrime Wing’s inquiry revolves around a video uploaded on May 26, in which Khan’s X account reportedly stated: “Every Pakistani should study the Hamood ur Rahman Commission Report and get to know who was the true traitor, General Yahya Khan or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”

Meanwhile, founder PTI Khan refused to answer to FIA interrogation until his lawyer was present with him.

Earlier, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ata Tarrar hinted at the possible probe of Khan’s social media account by FIA, claiming that accounts were allegedly used to “create chaos and anarchy” in the country and “undermining the national security,” Associated Press Pakistan (APP) reported.

The minister claimed that posts associated with Khan were trying to mobilise the people against major institution heads, including the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).

Commenting on Khan’s post claiming his comparison with Bangladesh’s founder, Sheikh Mujeeb-ur-Rehman, Tarar stated that the Bangladeshi public is now demolishing Mujeeb’s statue.

Objectionable material found on Orya Maqbool’s phone, claims Umar Cheema

In a short clip that has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), journalist Umar Cheema alleged that police have found objectionable material on Orya Maqbool Jan’s mobile phone while in custody.

YouTuber Orya Maqbool Jan, known for his right-wing religious views, was arrested on August 22 by the FIA’s cybercrime wing in Lahore for alleged hateful social media posts regarding the Mubarak Sani case.

“Charges brought up against him include sharing of vulgar and nude media in some drinking party where Orya Maqbool Jan is present.”

He also alleged that the authorities have found evidence that indicates Orya’s team was involved in creating trends against Army Chief Gen Asim Munir.

Umar opined that the coming days will tell how the case unfolds.

FIA arrests two suspects over offensive posts about Maryam Nawaz

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) cybercrime circle has arrested Murtaza Khan and Ahmed Hassan over objectionable remarks against Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Samaa has reported.

The FIA spokesperson claimed that the two suspects were included in a team that edited and shared derogatory posts about Maryam Nawaz and other senior officials on social media.

The suspects have been charged under the Prevention of Electronic Crime Act (PECA).
FIA stated that no one is beyond the law, and strict action will be taken against the suspects.

In 2016, the then PML-N led government introduced the PECA law to “check extremist content, prosecute hate speech and curb online harassment of women.”

The law has been criticised over the years as an instrument of stuffing free speech.

Orya Maqbool Jan arrested from Lahore

Controversial television host Orya Maqbool Jan has been arrested by the Cyber Crime Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on charges of hate speech and disrespectful remarks, The Express Tribune has reported.

FIA has stated that Orya Maqbool Jan will be presented before the judicial magistrate for physical remand on Thursday.

“A raid had taken place on his residency at the Defence Housing Society (DHA) phase 6,” FIA said in a statement.
Jan’s lawyer Azhar Siddiqui has said his client was apprehended after a social media post about the Mubarak Sani case.

Siddiqui said, “We haven’t been informed of the specifics of the FIR, and we believe the FIA lacks jurisdiction in this matter.” Yet, the First Information Report (FIR) has not been made public.”

Orya has been criticised many times over the years for disparaging remarks about minorities.

PMLN Sindh President to replace Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) and its coalition government ally, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), have agreed to change the Governor of Sindh, Kamran Khan Tesori.

According to a Geo News source, the incumbent Sindh governor could be replaced by PML-N Sindh president and former head of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Bashir Memon.

While responding to the report, MQM denied that the Governor will be changed.

A spokesperson of MQM said, ‘’The Centre has not contacted us yet in this regard’.”

PPP Sindh General Secretary Waqar Mehdi said, ‘’Kamran Tessori better go on leave until the PMLN chooses the new Governor of Sindh’’.

In April this year, sources made similar claims that former Sindh caretaker chief minister Justice (retired) Maqbool Baqar could be appointed governor of Sindh.
