    ‘Serial killer’ arrested in Gujranwala

Gujranwala police have arrested a man accused of kidnapping and killing four people in separate incidents, after robbing them of valuables, with reports describing him as a serial killer after initial investigation.

City Police Officer (CPO) Dr Ghias Gul said at a news conference that police recovered two unidentified bodies from the bank of a canal near Citi Housing Society on February 10. He said the bodies were of a 32-year-old woman and her five-year-old son.

“Both victims had been killed with a sharp-edged weapon,” the CPO said, adding that the deceased were later identified as Malaika and her son Muhammad Ahmed. A case of double murder was registered on the complaint of a police official.

Dr Gul said a special investigation team was formed under Superintendent of Police (SP) Civil Lines Imran Khan and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Hameed Virk. He said the team used modern investigation methods to trace the suspect.

“The suspect, Haroon Javed, was arrested while attempting to flee to Karachi from Lahore by train,” he said.

According to the CPO, the suspect confessed to killing Malaika and her children. He said the suspect also admitted to killing the woman’s eight-month-old daughter, Mubara, by asphyxiation and throwing her body into the canal.

The body of the infant was recovered from the canal on the identification of the suspect.

The suspect told investigators that he killed three members of the same family to snatch gold earrings worn by the woman. The suspect was a resident of the same Alam Chowk area where the deceased woman lived.

The CPO said the suspect also confessed to killing 13-year-old Rehan Ali from the Mado Khalil locality within the jurisdiction of Ladhewala police station on December 20. He revealed that he had kidnapped the boy to snatch a bridal dress from him and later murdered him.

A case regarding the kidnapping of the boy had been registered against unidentified suspects on the complaint of the victim’s father, Muhammad Imran, who runs an embroidery factory in the area.

Dr Gul said police teams worked on the case after the registration of the FIR and linked it with other incidents during the investigation. He commended the investigation team for tracing and arresting the suspect.

Newborn triplets die as floods cut off hospital access for Gujranwala woman

Three newborns have died on Sunday in Sohdra, a flood-affected village of Gujranwala, after their mother failed to reach a hospital as rising waters had cut off all access routes.

The woman, who was expecting triplets, went into labour but could not be taken to a medical facility as access routes had submerged underneath flood waters. She gave birth to her first child at home, but complications quickly developed.

The family arranged a boat to take her to a hospital in an effort to save her and the babies. But she gave birth to two more children as they were being taken in a car toward the boat.

Due to the lack of medical attention, all three infants – two daughters and a son – died. Overcome with grief, the mother said, “Roads opened for everyone else, but not for us.”

This is not the first time such a tragedy has been reported in Pakistan, where women have been unable to access hospitals in time.

In November 2022, a woman in Dir Upper District lost her newborn after giving birth on the way to a hospital, barely surviving herself.

Similarly, in August 2021, another woman delivered a baby girl inside an ambulance near the Hazara Motorway’s Shah Maqsood Interchange.

“The family, including me, my wife, and five children, was taken to the hospital after feeling sick,” he said, adding that two of the children, an eight-year-old and a four-year-old, passed away, while two others are in critical condition.

The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) sealed the suspected food outlets after the incident, according to an official notification issued on Monday.

“On the directions of Punjab Food Authority Director General Muhammad Asim Javaid, food safety teams conducted a crackdown in Eminabad following the alleged death of two minor girls due to toxic food,” the statement read.

The operation was carried out after the family identified the food vendors. “During the raid, two food outlets were sealed and various food samples, including cake, cream, red chilli powder, cooking oil, and chicken, were collected and sent to the laboratory for analysis,” it added.

The PFA spokesperson said further action would be taken once laboratory results were available. “[The] initial medical findings revealed the children had been unwell for several days and were already under treatment. Meanwhile, [the] case is also under police investigation,” the statement added, quoting the spokesperson.

PFA DG Javaid stated that any food outlets found responsible for compromising public health would face strict action under food safety laws.

In April, approximately 1,500 people were affected by food poisoning in a similar incident in Dhoong village, Gujar Khan, though the cause remained unknown.

Clashes between PTI workers and police amid general elections

Clashes have been reported between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers and police officers, after imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan gave calls for rallies ahead of the February 8 general elections.

Numerous PTI supporters attempting to organize rallies in cities like Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar were taken into custody during the crackdown, adding to mounting political tension. Reports also indicate police raids on election offices, confiscation of party paraphernalia, and the removal of banners and panaflexes, allegedly aimed at intimidating party workers and voters.

In Lahore, former Punjab governor and PTI candidate for NA-129, Mian Muhammad Azhar, was arrested by the police during an attempt to lead an election rally in his constituency. He was reportedly released later in the day.

His son, PTI Central Punjab General Secretary Hammad Azhar, took to X (formerly Twitter) and stated, “My 82-year-old father was arrested. He wanted to lead a rally as per his democratic and constitutional rights”.

“Pakistan has today been reduced to a total fascist state with zero human rights or rule of law. One Nawaz Sharif and his daughter calling the shots and ruining the country,” he added.

Despite the challenges, Mian Muhammad Azhar, upon his release, maintained that he had not committed any crime, asserting that his sole offense was organizing an election rally. He highlighted the apparent disparity in treatment, alleging that all political parties were allowed to conduct rallies and public gatherings, except the PTI.

In Karachi, over 20 PTI workers were arrested as the party attempted to conduct an election rally near Clifton Teen Talwar. Violent clashes erupted between PTI workers and the police, turning the area into a battleground. The confrontations resulted in injuries to police officials, including SHO Boat Basin Riaz Niazi, whose jaw was reportedly broken.

Police used baton charges and tear gas to disperse the PTI workers, leading to further injuries among the protesters. The clash disrupted traffic near Teen Talwar, Clifton, for a significant period.

SSP South Sajid Amir Sadozai told Express Tribune that no prior permission was taken by PTI workers to hold a rally in Clifton.

The PTI workers had blocked the road, following which the police asked them to clear the road.

In reply, they attacked the police with stones and sticks as a result more than 10 police personnel including SHO Boat Basin and a lady SHO were injured. SHO Boat Basin’s jaw was broken and he is in critical condition.

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) chief organiser took to X and said, “They should be dealt with iron hands.”

PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan condemned the actions of Karachi Police, emphasizing the constitutional right of every citizen to hold a peaceful rally during the election campaign.

Similarly, in Peshawar, PTI workers held rallies across various locations in the city, including Ring Road. The police apprehended 30 individuals from Pahari Pura, Faqieerabad, Sharqi, Hayatabad, Khazana, and Sarband.

Moreover, cases were filed against over fifty workers and community leaders.

Seventeen individuals were mentioned in the FIR within the jurisdiction of Paharipura police station, with seven of them being taken into custody. Likewise, Faqeerabad police station detained seven workers.

Sarband police arrested 17 individuals, while Hayatabad and Sharqi police each apprehended three PTI workers.

Earlier, PTI Chakwal candidate Ayyaz Amir reported a peculiar situation emerging in Chakwal involving the police. He highlighted instances of police raids on the homes of prominent local citizens, arrests of their family members, and acts of vandalism against local leaders.

Major election rallies were observed in various constituencies, including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Okara, Chakwal, Mandi Bahudin, Layyah, Bahawal Nagar, Mansehra, Gagu Mandi, Chitral, Banu, Peshawar, Karachi, Hyderabad, and other cities.
