Eid ul Azha: 5 things that can only happen in Pakistan

Eid is just around the corner and we as Pakistanis see a lot of interesting things that probably only happen in our country. These things enhance the spirit of Eid and give us something to smile about.

From our roofs to our plates

Crane lifting the cattle from the rooftops have become a common sight in Karachi. Amused pedestrians stand on the sides and enjoy watching the cows and goats being lifted from the roofs to the grounds.

    Animal service stations

Have you ever thought of taking your Qurbani animal to a service station? If not, then you should now start planning to go to the service station where your animal will get a shower for as less as Rs 100.

    Runaway animal

Oh, this one is the most interesting. We all are united when it comes to catching the runaway animal. If (God forbid) your animal runs away, then everyone’s got your back – from your neighbours to random people on the street – everyone will drop what they are doing and run after the animal and join your struggle to catch it.

    Bakra on bike

This is the most common. We all have seen this somewhere while on road. People taking their sacrificial goat or sheep on their bike with one person accompanying it on the back seat.

Meet Trump at the cattle market

You can see this only in Pakistan that animals are named after political leaders. And the cattle owners proudly introduce them with their interesting names.

#RedForKashmir: Social media goes red in solidarity with Indian occupied Kashmir

After the Indian government scrapped the Article 370 of the constitution which allowed Indian occupied Kashmir to have special status.

By eliminating Article 370 of the constitution, people from the rest of India will have the right to get property in occupied Kashmir and settle there permanently. This is seen as an attempt to dilute the demographics of  Indian occupied Kashmir.

Thousands have taken to social media to show their support and stand with the citizens of the disputed valley. This action of the Modi-led BJP government was widely condemned by social media users from across the globe.

A large number of social media users are changing their profile pictures to red and using hashtags like #RedForKashmir, #BleedForKashmir, #StandWithKashmir, and #Kashmirunderthreat to express solidarity with Kashmiris.

  • Islamabad Zoo’s brown bear on the road to recovery

Islamabad Zoo’s brown bear on the road to recovery

After the condition of the Himalayan Brown Bear in Islamabad Zoo sparked national outrage, efforts were made by the government and the Ministry of Climate Change to assess the bear’s condition and nurse it back to health.

And it appears that the outrage and protests were all for good reason because latest reports suggest that the bear has been operated upon and is on the road to recovery. According to a Facebook page, Friends of Islamabad Zoo, a surgery was performed on the brown bear a few days ago by Islamabad’s renowned veterinarian Dr Faisal Khan in consultation with Dr Bilal Khilji, Assistant Director and Veterinarian for the Zoo. The page also shared that the animal will soon return to its enclosure in a few days.

The public outrage also resulted in the matter of the zoo’s management being resolved. In compliance with the Islamabad High Court order, the authorised officer from Ministry Of Climate Change visited the Islamabad Zoo and notified the new zoo director Mr Altaf Khuro (Director, Zoological Survey Of Pakistan) to take over management and evaluate the status of each animal, their health, food, hygiene of enclosures and general cleanliness of the zoo.

It is pertinent to mention here that there is an ongoing tussle between the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation and the Ministry of Climate Change over the management of the zoo. After a petition was filed in the Islamabad High Court against the zoo’s management, the court had handed over management of the city’s zoo to the climate change ministry till August 29. However, the director of Marghazar Zoo is resisting the transfer and is not cooperative. He locked the gates when officials of climate change ministry went to take over control of the zoo.

Meanwhile, the zoo has also been declared a plastic-free zone and efforts were made to free the zoo from plastic.

  • Loafology: Divine Breads

    Loafology: Divine Breads

There was a time, not very long ago when the only bread we found in our cities was Dawn ki white wali bread. Foreign sounding breads weren’t available in Pakistan until they came with a big bang.

Loafology in Islamabad took the lead when it comes to producing the best bread in Pakistan. And as an avid bread finder and baker, I say that with full authority. There is no better multigrain bread in the country than the one at this bakery-cafe.

    The Walnut Raisin

Making bread is a real art. After spending a week of learning how to make bread in a bakery in small-town France, I quickly realised that it isn’t an art. Its downright precision. The ingredients, the temperature, humidity, space where it’s kept varies from bread to bread. Writing on a small note pad as a young Frenchman explained with gestures and broken English on what temperature to keep for which bread, I felt small in the even smaller white space.

    Inside the Restaurant

I am not a fan of their popular brioche and sourdough bread but their raisin and walnut bread and the eight-grain bread will take your breath away. So much so that you’ll be sure to buy the bread in bulk and lug it back to your city, freezing it for a month, cutting a piece every day and hoping it lasts forever.

Its not always the bread that makes the sandwich. It might be the core of a good breakfast or sandwich but if the other ingredients don’t hold up, it can’t be the only saviour. Sadly, Loafology’s breakfast and sandwiches have never done their bread justice.

    Desi Omelette

The interior is quaint, a guaranteed hit with foreigners and aunties out for a lunch. Bright and happy, it reflects the openness of Islamabad and the joy of the abroad. But the food stops short of being good. The Loafology Omelette walks the bland line and bite after bite, falls into the land of no salt and the slow-cooked shredded beef needed more BBQ sauce. While the food has all the elements needed, it just doesn’t match up to the mark – not once but a few times.

Regardless, we will all keep going back. For the bread, for the happy ambiance and the joy of knowing you can freeze the bread and let it linger for a month or more.
