Islamabad Court orders Adiala authorities to present Imran Khan in court today

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed the Adiala Jail Rawalpindi authorities to present the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, before the court at 3 PM today.

“Bring the PTI founder; he will have a meeting with his lawyers,” IHC stated during the hearing of a contempt of court case against the Adiala Jail Rawalpindi Superindentent for not allowing lawyers to meet Khan in jail.

Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan directed the superintendent to record reasons for every time he failed to ensure Imran Khan’s presence before the court.

“The court does not accept the security threats […] the lawyers were not allowed to meet. This is contempt of the court,” Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq remarked.

Citing the imposition of a ban on lawyers meeting with Khan, the State Council informed the court that the Punjab government had imposed the ban on meeting in Adiala jail amidst security concerns.

“Is there a ban on lawyers meeting him? If the Punjab government has prohibited the meeting of the lawyers, it would have committed contempt of court; whoever issued this notification has also committed contempt of court,” the court responded to the state council’s argument on security concerns, and directed the authorities to present the PTI founder in court.

However, later in the day, it was reported that Adiala Jail authorities had arranged for a meeting between Imran Khan and lawyers Salman Akram Raja, Faisal Fareed Chaudhary and Shoaib Shaheen.

Security concerns were cited by jail authorities for being unable to present the PTI founder in court instead. Imran’s lawyers have also been informed about the development, reports said.

Bushra Bibi will be free, and Khan will be allowed meetings in jail: Faisal Vawda

Senator Faisal Vawda, known for his tall claims, has alleged on a political talk show at ARY News that Bushra Bibi, former Prime Minister’s wife, will be released from jail on the 26th of this month while meetings with Imran Khan in Adiala Jail will continue as usual.

“She will be completely free, and no new cases will be made against her once her bail is granted. Regular meetings with Imran Khan will be resumed,” claimed the senator.

On October 23, Bushra Bibi was granted bail in the new Toshakhana Case by the Islamabad High Court; however, despite PTI’s utmost attempts, she has not been released from prison.

According to PTI’s legal team, the judges suddenly became absent, and the entire judicial complex was empty. When the lawyers approached the third and fourth judges on duty, they refused to sign the release papers.

Treasury members in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Wednesday condemned the non-release of Bushra Bibi despite her bail.

Vawda also alleged, “The entire leadership of PTI is compromised, and Khan in jail is actually a good thing for them.”

The question was: “Which former Prime Minister of Pakistan was shot at in Wazirabad on 3 November 2022?”

In this question, the four options were Nawaz Sharif, Imran Khan, Yousaf Raza Gillani, and Shaukat Aziz. The contestant chose the second option, which was Imran Khan, and won Rs 3,20,000/- for the correct answer.

PTI followers are sharing the short footage on social media, and most of them are celebrating the popularity of Imran Khan internationally.

On November 3 2022, Imran Khan, months after being ousted from the government through a no-confidence motion, was rallying across the country campaigning for the second ‘Azadi March’ against the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government when he was shot at in an attempted assassination in Wazirabad city.

Khan was at the front of a container-mounted truck along with other PTI leaders and supporters when a gunman fired shots. He was shot in the shin, and thigh of the right leg and was transferred to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore, where he underwent treatment.

Police arrested the gunman, Muhammad Naveed and uploaded a controversial confession video of the suspect stating that he shot Khan as he was “spreading hatred and misleading the people”, as well as making “blasphemous and anti-religion” remarks.

Seven people, including former prime minister Imran Khan and other party leaders, were injured, and a party worker was killed in the gun attack.

‘Well-planned strategy disconnecting Imran Khan from PTI leadership’

Political analyst Muneeb Farooq has claimed that the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan’s disconnect with his party leadership is part of a well-planned strategy.

Appearing on the Geo News programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath,’ Muneeb Farooq said, “There is a well-thought strategy behind disconnecting PTI leadership with Imran Khan.”

“It is done by design and strategy, and it has worked for the government and establishment,” he added.

Citing the possibility of a permanent disconnection between Imran and party leadership, Muneeb Farooq remarked, “Powerful and well-connected people believe that Imran Khan’s genuine jail [sentence] has just begun.”

Responding to the incumbent government’s effort and attention in tabling the twenty-sixth constitutional amendment, Farooq declared it to be akin to World War Three: “The first draft of the constitutional amendment was like an atom bomb.”

He maintained that constitutional amendments would be passed in phases and added that the new Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) and judge appointment method will be considered of paramount importance in phase one.

Farooq concluded by saying, “Till this time, the Federal Constitution Court seems to be established soon.”

‘PTI to continue protesting till Imran Khan’s release’

Information Advisor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif has said that his party’s protests will continue until the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, is released and charges against him are dropped.

Express News reported that the Advisor declared that peaceful protest is their democratic and constitutional right.

Lambasting the incumbent government, he states that an illegitimate government is trying to extend its rule by turning PTI protests into something like the Model Town incident of 2014.

He emphasised that the country’s economic progress is impossible under authoritarianism and declared the national economy at a standstill mode.

Earlier, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, in a press conference in Islamabad said that the terrorism in Karachi and the ‘political terrorism’ of PTI are similar.

Meanwhile, PTI has set conditions for calling off its protest on October 15, asking that their leaders should be allowed a meeting Imran Khan, and his personal physician should be allowed to check up on him.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has set a condition for calling off its protest on October 15, which coincides with the day Pakistan is set to host the SCO summit.

PTI’s condition is that their leaders should be allowed a meeting with the party founder, Imran Khan, and allow his personal physician to check up on him.

Geo News reported that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) rejected the proposal, with its Senator Talal Chaudhry emphasising: “The call for protest is merely an effort to blackmail the government.”

Meanwhile, there are also reports that through some backchannel contacts, the government may allow Barrister Gohal Ali Khan and Hamid Raza to meet Khan today to withdraw the protest call.

PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan wrote a request to the Interior Ministry to allow him and Hamid to meet with Khan three days before the protest call.

In the letter, it was written, “It is to invite your attention to the subject matter that the last time Imran Khan was visited by our lawyers in Adiala Jail was October 3, 2024. Since then, no one has been allowed to visit Imran Khan. There is grave concern amongst the political leadership and workers of PTI about the health concern and wellbeing of Imran Khan.”

There has also been internal opposition within PTI to postpone the protest in the greater interest of the country, with those opposing including CM KP Ali Amin Gandapur and Gohar Ali Khan, while Hammad Azhar, Salman Akram, and others advocated for holding the protest.

  • Achakzai fears Khan may be treated like Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto

Achakzai fears Khan may be treated like Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto

Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai, while addressing a public meeting in Qila Saifullah, Balochistan, warned on Monday that a dark chapter of history could repeat itself, fearing Imran Khan could be treated the same way Zulifqar Ali Bhutto was.

On April 4, 1979, the founder of the Pakistan People’s Party, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, whose government had been illegally removed by the dictator Zia ul Haq, was hanged in the Central Jail Rawalpindi.

Former Prime Minister Bhutto was sentenced to death by Lahore High Court in 1978 in an alleged politically motivated murder case, while the Supreme Court later upheld the original sentence.

Mary Anne Weaver, a foreign correspondent for The New Yorker, narrated the last moments of Bhutto in 1993, writing, “At 1:45 A.M. on April 4, 1979, four wardens entered the prison cell of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a waifishly thin man, nearly wasted away by malaria, dysentery, and hunger strikes. Two of them lifted him by the arms and two by the feet, and he was carried out.”

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto wrote in his last testimony, which was later compiled into a book ‘If I Am Assassinated’, that he was confined in a “in this narrow, dark, sinking death cell for 22 or 23 hours every day.”

Founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has been imprisoned for over a year in numerous cases ranging from allegations of corruption and violence against state institutions.

Achakzai alleged that the PTI workers have faced state repression while protesting for their leader’s release, while emphasising that they won’t let history repeat itself.

The PkMAP chief demanded that Khan and his party workers should be released from jail, warning that failure to do so could push the country towards civil unrest.

Imran Khan approaches United Nations expert over 26th constitutional amendments

Founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has approached the United Nations (UN) Special Representative on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers against the incumbent government’s proposed constitutional amendments.

According to the United Kingdom (UK) website, which offers legal assistance, former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has filed an urgent appeal to the UN Special Rapporteur through Edward Fitzgerald KC, Tatyana Eatwell and Jennifer Robinson.

Imran’s family advised Eatwell and Robinson to conduct UN engagement and international advocacy on his behalf.

The appeal voiced concerns that the incumbent government’s proposed twenty-sixth constitutional amendments would curb the independence of the judiciary, and the rule of law added that constitutional amendments would pose a serious threat to the fundamental rights of Imran Khan and his followers in Pakistan.

International counsel for Imran Khan and his family, Edward Fitzgerald KC, Tatyana Eatwell and Jennifer Robinson, stated, “The proposed amendments are clearly aimed at removing the jurisdiction and powers of the Supreme Court, at a time when the judiciary in Pakistan is already under threat. Judges have been threatened and coerced to deliver prescribed verdicts in controversial cases.”
