PTI claims intelligence agencies rigged by-polls, announce protest

After the recently held by-elections on Sunday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders alleged that intelligence agencies were involved in rigging polls.

The party termed April 21 as a “black day” in the history of Pakistan while urging the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to withhold the notifications of results.

Announcing a series of protests starting from Friday, the PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, addressing a press conference, said, “[The] day of election is considered an accountability day, and people cast their votes with great zeal. However, on April 21, open and blatant violations of law were observed. The magnitude of the rigging and violation of law has never been observed in the history of Pakistan. Gates of polling stations were closed, and at some polling stations, more votes were polled than the total registered votes.”

The PTI Chairman, accompanied by other senior members of the party, stated that in one polling station in Gujrat, only 120 votes were cast but three boxes of ballot papers were seen.

PTI’s Omar Ayub said that pre-poll rigging began with the suspension of the internet. He also showed a letter from the RO of NA-8 Bajaur to the DRO, claiming that the RO alleged that an intelligence official had beaten the staff.

“We will start protests, along with other parties, next Friday across the country,” said Ayub.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won a majority of seats in by-polls held on nearly two dozen national and provincial seats on Sunday.

Bajwa takes oath on the Holy Quran, says he didn’t have anything to do with Khan’s no-confidence motion

Former Army chief (retd) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa has reportedly ‘sworn’ that he didn’t play any role in the no-trust vote against founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan.

Senior journalist Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami revealed this in Geo News’ show ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath’. He also said that he met Bajwa at a wedding, also adding that the former general had a ‘pocket-sized copy of the Quran’.

Shami also revealed that Bajwa took an oath, with his hand on the Quran, saying that he didn’t ask the government directly or indirectly for a second extension and had nothing to do with the no-confidence motion against Khan. Gen Bajwa also claimed that he had no role in giving permission to Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif to travel to the UK for his medical checkup.

He added that it was purely Imran Khan’s government’s decision to send Nawaz Sharif to the UK.

The senior journalist also stated that Bajwa confessed that the Army fully supported Imran Khan’s government.

CM KP Gandapur says negotiations with terrorists ‘is the only solution’

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has stated that ‘negotiations’ is the only way to move forward in dealing with terrorism.

Addressing a press conference, the CM KP said, “Imran Khan stated that we should not become a part of somebody else’s war and that negotiations are the only solution.”

Gandapur also added that “whatever we have done before has not yielded any results but rather we have suffered.”

It should be noted that the Imran Khan-led government, after the Afghan Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021, pursued infamous “peace deals” with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) which failed.

Historically, Pakistan has tried to negotiate at least a half dozen of these ‘peace deals’ with the TTP and every single one has failed.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has stated that the former Chief of Army Staff Qamar Javed Bajwa and the ex-spymaster General Faiz Hamid should be held accountable for their policy of allowing the Taliban to return to Pakistan.

According to Asif, ‘generals painted a rosy picture’ of a new era if the TTP were allowed back in the country.

The Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) annual report revealed that more than 1500 people lost their lives in 2023 due to terror attacks.

Pakistan has witnessed a stark increase in terror attacks since the Afghan Taliban came into power in the neighbouring country.

Pakistan continues to blame Afghanistan for their inaction against anti-Pakistan elements and even conducted surgical strikes inside Afghanistan in March 2024 targeting hideouts of commanders of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Social media reactions were mostly mixed regarding the CM KP’s statement.

He asked Khan to, “take the matter to a logical conclusion.” The former interior minister said the PTI founder was not even “ready to sit or talk” with anyone.

Referring to the results of Sunday’s by-polls, the PML-N leader said, “PTI’s supporters and voters did not come out of their homes due to his [Imran Khan] stubbornness.”

PM Shehbaz congratulates newly elected lawmakers in by-polls

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated newly elected members of the national and provincial assemblies for winning the by-polls on Sunday.

He said that the victory of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidates in by-polls is a sign of people’s trust on the party. “We sincerely thank people who voted for the Muslim League-N in the by-election.”. The PM also assured Pakistanis that his party will do every possible things to server them.

He observed that along with clear signs of economic progress, people were starting to notice a shift in public opinion. The victories of PML-N candidates were seen as the public recognizing the government’s efforts in fixing the economy, lowering inflation, and enhancing foreign relations. He hoped that as the economy continued to improve and public satisfaction grew, people’s opinions would keep changing positively.

He also said international financial institutions, news agencies, and surveys covering economic improvement have a positive impact on public opinion.

The PM said that the non-political behaviour of the opposition after the February 8 elections had also left its supporters confused and disappointed.

Sanaullah says by-polls results a ‘big message’ for PTI

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Rana Sanaullah, commenting on the recent by-polls, said that the low voter turnout is a big message for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

“PTI voters have not come out today [during by-elections],” Sanaullah claimed while speaking on Geo News programme Naya Pakistan.

Sanaullah also said that any complaints regarding the election process should be brought before the relevant forums.

Stating that Nawaz Sharif-led PML-N used to raise complaints about the election results “within the system”, he said it was the former prime minister Imran Khan who always tried to “bulldoze” the system.

Rana Sanaullah expressed satisfaction over the by-polls and opined that voter turnout is usually low in by-polls.

Meanwhile, PTI’s leader Ali Muhammad Khan alleged that these by-polls were rigged the same way as the February 8 general elections.

Furthermore, the PTI member expressed satisfaction with the election results of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

The footage was shared by a user on X, formerly Twitter while condemning his actions.

Originally, the video was posted on Tiktok by a PTI supporter, Jameelrehmani24,  himself displaying the poster at the holy site.

Social media reactions were mixed with some users saying there is nothing wrong with doing so and others condemning the move.

Interestingly in 2018, two Indian nationals were held by Saudi authorities for waving and taking pictures with the tri-colour Indian flag inside the Kaaba in Mecca.

Following the incident, the Consulate General of India in Jeddah released a statement that it is illegal to display flags in the area.

National Assembly (NA) Speaker Ayaz Sadiq took action against two lawmakers on Friday for making inappropriate gestures during a joint parliamentary session . He suspended the membership of Jamshed Ahmad Khan Dasti and Muhammad Iqbal Khan, who are backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) after they used abusive language during President Asif Ali Zardari’s speech.

PTI-SIC lawmakers staged a strong protest and created a ruckus during the maiden joint sitting of parliament on Thursday after the February 8 nationwide elections, which was addressed by President Zardari in which he stressed the need for political reconciliation.

The NA speaker introduced a motion in the lower house of parliament to suspend two members.

The motion, which was read by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, stated that both MNAs used “abusive language” and approached the dais of the speaker in a “threatening manner”, which was an “unacceptable” action.
