  • ‘Namaz in open spaces will not be tolerated’: CM of Indian state Haryana

‘Namaz in open spaces will not be tolerated’: CM of Indian state Haryana

The Chief Minister (CM) of the Indian state Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar said that namaz should not be offered in the open, adding that an earlier decision where some sites had been reserved for the purpose had been withdrawn, reports The Indian Express.

Khattar said the government had informed the police and the deputy commissioner that the issue needed to be resolved. “To resolve it, everyone offers prayers at their own place. Such practices should not take place in the open. This practice of offering namaz prayers here in the open will not be tolerated,” he stated.

“They (Muslims) have said that they have several places where they should be given permission to pray. Some of their properties or those under Waqf board are encroached up, how they can be made available to them is being discussed. Or they can offer prayers in their homes. Offering namaz in the open and this confrontation, we will not allow this confrontation to continue,” Khattar said.

The announcement came after tension in Gurgaon city, where Hindu groups in several episodes disrupted Muslim Friday prayers and put pressure on authorities to stop Muslims from offering the prayers in open spaces.

Talking about the withdrawal of the agreement, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Khattar said, “A decision had been taken earlier after consultation, but that decision too where some spots had been reserved, we have withdrawn it. Now, talks will be conducted with a fresh approach again. Everyone should get the facility. No one’s rights should be infringed, but no one will be forced.”

Authorities there had reached an agreement in 2018 in which Muslims were allowed to offer prayers at designated areas in the city.

While the CM meeting was on, some local residents and members of pro-Hindutva groups occupied the area outside the Sector 37 police station, which had been reserved for namaz prayers.

It is reported that the group conducted a “condolence meet” to mourn the demise of Chief of Defence Staff of the Indian Armed Forces (CDS) Bipin Rawat and other defence personnel who were killed in a helicopter crash.

The group also chanted slogans of “Jai Shree Ram” (Hail Lord Ram) and “Bharat Mata ki Jai” (Hail Mother India) at the site.

  • 293 journalists jailed, 24 killed in 2021: CPJ report

Record number of journalists were jailed around the world in 2021 with China remaining the world’s worst jailer of journalists for the third year in a row with 50 journalists behind the bars, states a report by Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Apart from China, 26 journalists are behind bars in Burma, 25 in Egypt, 23 in Vietnam and 19 in Belarus.

Adding those jailed in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Russia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, the CPJ said a total of 293 journalists were in prison worldwide as of December 1.

Forty of the 293 detained journalists – less than 14 per cent – are women.

Executive director of the group Joel Simon said, “This is the sixth year in a row that CPJ has documented record numbers of journalists imprisoned around the world. It’s distressing to see many countries on the list year after year, but it is especially horrifying that Myanmar and Ethiopia have so brutally slammed the door on press freedom.”

According to the report, 24 journalists are believed to be killed around the world this year. India has the highest number of journalists – four – confirmed to have been murdered in retaliation for their work. A fifth was killed while covering a protest. While, in the west, Mexico is at the top as three journalists were murdered for their reporting and the motives for six other killings are under investigation.

The CPJ said the number of journalists behind bars reflects “increasing intolerance for independent reporting around the world”.

Last month, Freedom Network reported that two dozen journalists in Pakistan had been prosecuted (2019-21) over the past under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca).

  • Ajaz Patel becomes third bowler in Test history to take 10 wickets in an innings

Ajaz Patel becomes third bowler in Test history to take 10 wickets in an innings

New Zealand’s left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel has picked all the 10 wickets in an innings in the ongoing Mumbai Test against India on Saturday.

He had scalped all four wickets to fall on the opening day of the Test and carried on with his brilliant bowling on the second day as well to run through India’s line-up.

India was bundled out for 325 runs in their first innings with Ajaz ending with magical figures of 10/115, which are really very rare to witness in international cricket.

He became only the third bowler in international cricket to achieve this incredible feat. Jim Laker and Anil Kumble did the unthinkable earlier. Many bowlers came close since then, but they couldn’t grab all 10 wickets in an innings. All the wickets were brilliant set ups as well from the left-arm spinner nipping out top players of spin bowling.

Pakistan’s veteran leg-spinner Abdul Qadir has also grabbed 9 wickets in a match against England. This feat was achieved by the Pakistani legend in Lahore in 1987.

Anil Kumble took to his Twitter and congratulated the Kiwi bowler.

“Welcome to the club,” he wrote.

Several people from the cricket fraternity congratulated the cricketer for this amazing feat.

‘Nafrat Jeet Gai’, Indian Muslim comedian quits after 12 shows cancelled in 2 months

Indian Muslim stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui has hinted that he won’t be doing any shows from now on saying, “Nafrat jeet gai, Artist haar gaya. Im done! Goodbye! INJUSUSTICE.” Faruqui’s statement came after the comedian’s Bengaluru show was cancelled on Sunday due to threats from right-wing groups.

Aaj Bangalore show cancel ho gaya (under the threats of venue vandalism). We sold 600+ tickets. Month back my team called late Puneeth Rajkumar sir organisation for charity which we will be going to generate from this show in Bangalore. We agreed to not sell the show on the name of charity as suggested by the noble organisation,” Munawar Faruqui tweeted.

“Putting me in jail for the joke I never did to cancelling my shows, which has nothing problematic in it. This is unfair.
