    Ilhan Omar visit to Pakistan not govt-sponsored: US State Department

    US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price on Friday declared that Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who is currently on her maiden visit to Pakistan, was not visiting the country on US government-sponsored travel.

    The senior official made the statement during a press briefing today in response to a question from a journalist.

    “As you are well aware that Imran Khan is still blaming US for his ouster from PM’s office while he’s also asking his supporters to keep protesting outside the White House. But yesterday Congresswoman Ilhan Omar met with Mr. Khan in Islamabad. It was kind of an hour-long meeting. Close associates of Mr. Khan claimed that United States trying to clear the air with Mr. Khan. Is it true that Ilhan Omar is representing Biden government there in Islamabad,” the journalist had asked.

    “Well, as I understand it, Representative Omar is not visiting Pakistan on US government-sponsored travel, so I’d need to refer you to her office for questions on her travel,” Price replied.

    Omar, who made history as one of the first two Muslim women elected to the US Congress, arrived in Islamabad earlier this week on a visit to Pakistan. The Congresswoman will stay in Pakistan till April 24.

    She met a host of important figures including President Dr Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Foreign Office officials, as well as PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

    According to official sources, the Congresswoman was also flown to the Line of Control (LoC) in the Chakothi sector, where she was briefed on the situation before and after the fresh understanding between the Pakistani and Indian armies to respect the 2003 ceasefire agreement.

    Some residents, who had been affected by Indian shelling prior to the ceasefire, had also gathered there and shared their tales of horror with the visitors.

    According to PTI’s Shireen Mazari, Omar had discussed Islamophobia and other related issues in the meeting with Khan at the PTI chairman’s Bani Gala residence.

    Politicians and social media users immediately questioned the PTI chairman about the meeting with the American legislator and reminded him of his criticism of US officials meeting opposition figures. Newly elected Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah led the charge by asking Khan if his meeting with Omar was “a conspiracy or interference”.

    Mazari, subsequently, fired back at the critics by saying that Omar was not a part of the US administration.

    PM Shehbaz kicks off New Islamabad International Airport Metro Bus Service

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has inaugurated Metro Bus Service from Peshawar Morr to New Islamabad International Airport today [Monday]. Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan Mustafa Yurdakul, Chinese Chargé d’affaires Pang Chunxue, and a number of Parliamentarians attended the inauguration ceremony.

    Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the metro bus project as a gift from PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif for the residents of the federal capital, adding that the project was started in 2017 and was made functional in a record time one year in 2018.

    “But after the government changed, like other projects, this project was also delayed,” said the prime minister while addressing the ceremony. The thing that was not present was the government’s will to work and serve the masses,” he added.

    After assuming the office of Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif had directed for resumption of work on the project and its completion on a war footing.

    The bus service will provide international standard travel facilities to thousands of passengers on a daily basis. Later, the Metro Bus Service route will be extended to Rawat.

    Islamabad Traffic Police issues 2,827 challans to unregistered cars, motorcycles

    During the current year, the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) issued fine tickets to 2,827 unregistered cars and motorcycles.

    The action was taken as part of a crackdown initiated by Inspector-General (IG) Islamabad Police Muhammad Ahsan Younas and led by Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Traffic Rai Mazhar Iqbal.

    The ITP deployed special enforcement squads to check unregistered automobiles on the roadways as part of the crackdown. Special enforcement teams were stationed throughout the city to keep an eye on the movement of unregistered vehicles. Meanwhile, the SSP (Traffic) asked citizens on Friday to have their vehicles registered as soon as possible and to use only ETO-issued number plates.

    He stated that police officials would not be lenient in this regard. In order to maintain a smooth flow of traffic in the Federal Capital, ITP is taking strict action against vehicles that are parked incorrectly.

    All Zonal DSPs were directed by the SSP Traffic to ensure that traffic laws were followed by citizens by being polite. Citizens should be treated with respect, he emphasized, and he educated them on traffic laws.

    Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has announced ‘free metro service’ for the citizens of Islamabad during the month of Ramzan.

    “Prime Minister has ordered free metro service for the citizens of the capital during the month of Ramadan. He expressed dismay over delays in the project terming it severe negligence as 16 billion rupees have been spent on the project so far,” tweeted PM Office.

    He paid a visit to the Peshawar Morr Metro Bus Station at 7am to assess the project’s progress on the ground. He also ordered to operationalise Metro Bus Service from Peshawar Road to Airpot.

    New bank timings announced by SBP, Saturday will now be observed as a working day

    Pursuant to the federal government’s directive issued on April 13, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) would observe a six-day work week with amended timings.

    During Ramzan, working hours for the central bank, development finance institutions (DFIs), microfinance banks (MFBs), and all commercial banks, are as follows:

    Monday to Thursday and Saturday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm with a prayer break from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm.

    Fridays: from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm without a break, according to a notification from SBP.

    Public dealing hours

    Banks and MFBs have been advised to adhere to the following public dealing business hours:

    Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm (no break).

    Fridays from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm (no break).

    Banks and MFBs may observe longer business (banking) hours for public dealing from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm (without break) on weekdays excluding Fridays, depending on their business needs.

    The abovementioned schedule will take effect immediately and will not be changed or withdrawn unless it is amended or canceled.

    Russian national woman, Merkulova Kristina used her martial art skills with policewomen in an attempt to resist arrest in Islamabad, reports Samaa. However, the Russian woman was detained later by the Islamabad police for overstaying in Pakistan.

    The Islamabad police raided a hotel in Sitara Market on a tip-off on Monday evening from where she was taken to the Islamabad police station for interrogation. The report revealed that her visa was found expired during an examination of her documents. According to details, Merkulova Kristina entered Pakistan on December 30 last year, and later she extended her visa till March 25, 2022.

    According to First Information Report (FIR), the police shifted the Russian tourist to the women’s police station for further interrogation. Later, they decided to detain her under the Foreigners Act after her visa was found expired. She, however, used her martial art skills to resist arrest and also assaulted Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Parveen and her subordinates.

    The FIR stated, “In the resistance, the Russian woman who knows Martial Arts ripped off the uniform of the lady officer.” The Russian woman was responsible for damaging property in the lock-up as per CCTV recording.

    She is now booked under additional charges of Sections 186 (obstructing public servant), 353 (assault to deter public servant), 427 (mischief causing damage), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

    The latest data provided by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturing Association (PAMA) shows that overall car sales climbed by 53.78 per cent during the first nine months of the current fiscal year 2021-22 (July-March) compared to the same period in the past financial year.

    Keeping in view the recent figures, 172,612 vehicles were delivered in the time period under consideration, compared to 112,244 cars in the previous year. In March 2022, the country’s car sales climbed by 33.28 per cent on a year-over-year (YoY) basis when compared to the same month in 2021.

    In March 2022, car sales soared to 22,799 units, up from 17,105 units in the same month the previous year. considering the breakdown of the numbers, around 26,830 combined units of Honda Civic and City were sold in the fiscal year 2021-22, compared to 18,816 units in 2021, indicating a 42.59 per cent increase.

    The sale of Toyota Corolla and Yaris sedans increased by 24.93 per cent in the same time, rising to 43,695 units from 34,975 units the previous year. Suzuki Swift sales, on the other hand, fell by 73.78 per cent, from 1,896 units in July-March 2020-21 to 497 units. The drop witnessed in sales of Suzuki Swift was due to the production cut of the older Swift, which was scheduled to be replaced by the fourth generation in February of this year.

    With 53,241 units sold so far in the fiscal year 2022, Pakistan’s smallest engine size vehicle, the 660cc Alto, is now the most popular. It is worth noting that the mini hatchback is also the country’s ‘cheapest’ four wheeler from the big three.

    The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has clarified opening its doors late on the evening of April 9, 2022 when the process of a no-confidence motion against former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan was going on in the National Assembly (NA).

    In a statement, the court said, “The filing of petitions late in the evening on April 9, 2022, has been misreported and queries have been raised whether petitions can be presented after the notified court timings.”

    On Saturday, there were rumours that a petition was filed in the IHC, asking the court to restrain Khan from de-notifying Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa from his post.

    IHC said the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President approached the court and requested the court to implement the Supreme Court’s April 7 order. The IHC statement then referred to the petitions, including a “pre-emptive” constitutional petition that sought to restrain the then prime minister from de-notifying the army chief.

    “As a constitutional court, the Islamabad High Court has ensured that cases relating to extreme urgency are presented at any time after the notified timings,” the high court said, adding: “The honourable chief justice, if satisfied that there exists extreme urgency, may order fixing of the case at any time.”

    “A petition regarding extreme urgency could be presented at any time after the notified court timings and it could also be fixed for hearing subject to the satisfaction of the chief justice that circumstances exist for doing so,” the court said further.

    Islamabad Traffic Police to take strict action against motorists using HIDs, LEDs

    The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has once again decided to take stern action against motorists who use High-Intensity Discharge (HID) and Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) while driving.

    As per the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic, Rai Mazhar Iqbal, the decision was taken on the orders of IGP (Islamabad) Muhammad Ahsan Younis to provide a safe driving environment in the federal capital and reduce accidents.

    Special squads have been formed to monitor motorists’ use of LED and HID lights. Police pickets will be set up along major thoroughfares such as the Expressway, Srinagar highway (Kashmir Highway), Margalla Road, IJP Road, Murree Road, 7th Avenue, and 9th Avenue.

    This campaign will be led by night shift in-charges to prevent the use of high beam lights and LED/HID lights, while an education wing will inform the public about the dangers of using these lights.

    Special broadcasts on ITP’s dedicated FM Radio 92.4 will also educate drivers about the dangers of utilising these lights. The SSP Traffic has urged citizens to help Islamabad police to ensure a safe road environment.

    ‘Amazing outpouring of support’: PTI supporters rock streets countrywide

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters took to the streets across all major and small cities in massive numbers to show their solidarity with their leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Party supporters came out following a call given by Khan for peaceful protest.

    A day after Khan was voted out of power, he, during an address to the nation, had said that he will not tolerate the installation of a “foreign government” in Pakistan and that he will turn to the public for support if such a thing happens.

    “We are not a nation that can be used like tissue papers,” Khan said during a live telecast, maintaining that Pakistan does not want unilateral relations with any country.

    Earlier in the day on April 10, Khan tweeted that today marked the beginning of a “freedom struggle” against what he called was a “foreign regime-change conspiracy”. In an attempt to galvanize his supporters, he said “it is always the people who protected their own sovereignty and democracy.”

    PTI had shared the venues for the protests hours before their supporters took to the streets.

    The protest in the capital started from Zero Point. People waved flags while chanting slogans in favour of the former prime minister.

    Former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry thanked PTI supporters for turning out to Rawalpindi for the protest.

    PTI leader Hammad Azhar posted a video of a rally from his constituency of NA-126 leaving for Liberty Chowk.

    Peshawar

    A large number of protesters including women and children turned up at Peshawar Press Club and expressed solidarity with the ousted prime minister.

    Karachi

    A protest was held in Karachi on Rashid Minhas Road where a large number of supporters, including women and children, were in attendance.

    Overseas Pakistani too came out in support of Khan.

    Khan thanks protestors for ‘amazing outpouring of support’

    Imran thanked his supporters in a tweet done prior to midnight.

    “Thank you to all Pakistanis for their amazing outpouring of support and emotions to protest against US-backed regime change abetted by local Mir Jafars to bring into power a coterie of pliable crooks all out on bail,” he tweeted.

    “[It] shows Pakistanis at home and abroad have emphatically rejected this.”
