Karachi doctor donates kidneys of only son after fatal crash, saves two lives

A female nephrologist from Karachi made an extraordinary decision in the midst of unimaginable grief, donating both kidneys of her only son, who had been declared brain dead after a severe road accident.

The donation gave a second chance at life to two patients in need of transplants.

Syed Sultan Zafar, 23, a dental student at Ziauddin Medical and Dental College, was the only son of Dr Mahar Afroze, a consultant Nephrologist and Associate Professor at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT).

He was also the grandson of two prominent figures in Pakistan’s medical community: Prof Tipu Sultan and Prof Dr Shershah Syed.

Sultan’s father, Syed Furqan Zafar, passed away due to liver cancer a few years ago, Prof. Tipu Sultan has said.

He is buried at Kohi Goth, where the family operates a charity hospital. Sultan Zafar will be buried alongside his father.

Prof. Tipu described the tragic events, saying Sultan was driving with friends in DHA Phase 8 on Wednesday morning when he met a road accident.

He was brought unconscious to a hospital after suffering severe head injuries. Before being sent to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), he had a surgery to remove blood clots from his brain and was intubated.

“At 1am on Saturday, he had to undergo another craniotomy,” Prof Tipu recalled. “We spent those days in constant fear, unable to think about anything else.”

Sultan was shifted to a general ward after showing brief signs of recovery. However, by Tuesday morning, his condition worsened.

Prof. Tipu stated, “He experienced breathing difficulties, was moved back to the intensive care unit, and had to be re-intubated.” “By 4pm, his pupils were fixed and dilated, and he had lost all reflexes. The family was devastated.”.

“After over five hours of discussions outside the ICU, Mahar Afroze made the bravest and most selfless decision of her life to donate her son’s organs.”

That same night, Dr Afroze personally arranged for her son’s body to be taken to SIUT, recognizing the urgent need for cadaver organ donation.

“She is a nephrologist who witnesses patients dying every day due to the lack of organ donors. She wanted Zafar’s death to mean something,” said Prof Tipu.

Two dialysis patients at SIUT had their kidneys successfully transplanted after years of dialysis. Unfortunately, because there were no suitable recipients, no more organs could be donated.

Prof. Dr. Shershah Syed, Sultan’s grandfather, praised Dr. Afroze, saying, “She is not only a great doctor but also a courageous mother and a remarkable human being.  She has served as a strong role model for Pakistani families and physicians. We are incredibly proud of her.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday, SIUT confirmed the successful transplants. “The surgeries were performed in the early hours of the morning by a dedicated team of urologists and anesthetists,” the statement noted.

The institute also commended the family’s decision. “Dr Afroze’s donation, made in the midst of overwhelming grief, is being widely applauded by the medical community and the public,” the statement added.

SIUT Director Prof Adib Rizvi praised the move, saying, “The family gave the gift of life to two patients who had no living donors and had been on dialysis for years. We urge society to follow their example.”

“This act should serve as inspiration,” said Prof Tipu. “Mahar Afroze has lost her only son and is left with two daughters, yet she chose to give hope to others. That is the essence of humanity.”

Husband confesses to sexually assaulting teen bride in Karachi

The husband of a 19-year-old from Lyari, who died after spending 20 days in a coma, has confessed to sexually assaulting her.

The suspect, identified as Ashok, recorded his statement before a judicial magistrate for District South under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The court has since sent him to jail on judicial remand.

Police surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed confirmed that the medical examination findings were consistent with sexual violence.

Earlier this month, the girl was brought to Civil Hospital Karachi in critical condition after allegedly being sexually assaulted by her husband, who was later arrested by the police.

Citing Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed, a media report claimed that the victim was in a coma while her physical examination findings were consistent with sexual violence, adding, “The rape victim passed away at the trauma centre of the Civil Hospital Karachi at 10:45am Wednesday.”

The report quoted Baghdadi police Station House Officer (SHO) Majid Alvi as claiming that two days after the girl got married, the husband subjected her to sodomy and assaulted her with a metal pipe, leading to internal injuries.

The victim’s brother registered a First Information Report (FIR) at the Baghdadi Police Station on July 5 under Sections 324 (attempt to commit murder) and 376-B (punishment for rape) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

“On the third day of her marriage, my sister was subjected to sexual violence allegedly by her husband. She remained admitted at a private hospital in the city and was later taken to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre of Civil Hospital Karachi in a critical condition the other day,” the FIR read.

The FIR further read that the complainant’s sister married the suspect on June 15. Her health condition deteriorated on June 30, compelling the family to bring her back home. She informed the parents that on June 17, her husband subjected her to an unnatural sexual act.

The complainant said that the suspect sexually assaulted her with a foreign object, adding subsequently, the husband also subjected her to sexual violence, leading to bleeding.

As per the FIR, the suspect threatened his wife with “dire consequences” if she disclosed anything to anyone.

According to a statement issued by Aurat March on social media platforms on Wednesday, the victim’s name was Shanti, and she had been raped and mutilated by her husband Ashok Kumar.

The suspect’s family reportedly also tried to hide the rape and denied the victim medical care while also cutting her off from her parents.

They watched her bleed and scream and chose silence,” the statement said, adding that the in-laws asked Shanti’s family for forgiveness and erased all evidence of rape.

The statement also accused a private hospital and one Dr Rauf Shaikh of medical negligence, saying they “covered up rape and sent her home to die”.

Aurat March, along with Minority Rights Watch, has also announced taking to streets after Shanti’s family returns following her last rites.

Passenger mistakenly flown to Jeddah serves legal notice to airline

Malik Shahzain, the Karachi-bound passenger who was mistakenly flown to Jeddah, has now issued a legal notice to AirSial, holding the airline accountable for its negligence.

The notice, which was filed under the Sindh Consumer Protection Act of 2014, demands an explanation and reimbursement for additional travel expenses.

Shahzain claimed that the airline’s negligence caused him significant distress, as he had to pay extra travel expenses to return to Lahore after being questioned by Saudi immigration authorities for not having the necessary documents.

Shahzain, who had been in Lahore for about a month managing factory-related matters, scheduled an AirSial trip from Lahore to Karachi on July 7. At 9:45 PM, he was scheduled to board flight PF146.

Upon reaching the airport and collecting his boarding pass, he unknowingly boarded an international flight to Jeddah, which was carrying pilgrims for the Umrah.

“Two hours later, I began to wonder why the plane wasn’t landing. That’s when I found out I had boarded the wrong flight,” he said.

Upon arrival in Jeddah, he was still inside the plane when a team informed him that the airplane would take him back to Lahore.

He eventually returned and boarded flight PF144 to Karachi on July 8 at 3:45 AM.

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) issued letters to the station manager and the civil aviation regulator after taking notice of the incident.

According to PAA spokesman Saifullah, “the civil aviation regulator has been requested in the letter to impose a heavy fine on the airline that is guilty of negligence.”

The statement did not, however, clarify how the passenger was able to clear immigration at Lahore airport before boarding the Jeddah-bound flight.

A passenger scheduled to fly from Lahore to Karachi on a domestic AirSial flight mistakenly boarded an international flight to Jeddah on July 7.

Malik Shahzain had been staying in Lahore for nearly a month to manage factory-related matters.

“I am Malik Shahzain. I had been staying in Lahore for around one month and was looking after some factory work. I booked a ticket on AirSial [for Karachi]. My flight was on 7th July at 10 AM.”

He stated that after arriving at the airport, he received his boarding pass and proceeded to his plane. At the same time, an international flight bound for Jeddah, carrying Umrah pilgrims, was also boarding.

“When I arrived at the airport, I collected my boarding pass. Another flight was boarding, headed to Jeddah carrying Umrah pilgrims. I mistakenly boarded that plane.”

According to Shahzain, he realised something was wrong two hours into the flight when the plane still had not landed.

“Two hours later, I began to wonder why the plane wasn’t landing. That’s when I found out I had boarded the wrong flight.”

He was still inside the plane when a team arrived and informed him that it had landed in Jeddah and would take him back to Lahore.

According to a media report, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) stated that senior officials had taken notice of the lapse and had written letters to the civil aviation regulator and the station manager.

“In the letter, the civil aviation regulator has been requested to impose a heavy fine on the airline that is guilty of negligence,” PAA spokesman Saifullah said.

The PAA statement, however, did not clarify how the passenger cleared immigration at the Lahore airport before boarding the Jeddah-bound flight.

Shahzain had originally booked AirSial flight PF146 from Lahore to Karachi on July 7 at 9:45 PM, according to his boarding pass. However, after returning from Jeddah, he eventually boarded flight PF144 to Karachi from Lahore on July 8 at 3:45 AM.

Humaira Asghar’s father refuses to claim her body, says he cut ties years ago

Police officials have revealed that the family of actress and model Humaira Asghar has refused to claim her body, which was found on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after she died in Karachi.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South Mehzor Ali, authorities tracked Humaira’s phone number through her landlord and used call data records to contact her father and brother. Her father refused to come to Karachi, revealing that he had severed ties with her nearly two years ago. Police report that they have since been unable to get back in touch with him.

Efforts to encourage the family to claim her remains are currently ongoing. Two mobile devices were recovered from her apartment in DHA Phase VI, and data recovery is in progress. The autopsy and toxicology reports are still awaited. SSP Mehzor noted that a case will be initiated if there is any indication of foul play, regardless of the family’s willingness to pursue it.

Humaira had been living alone in the apartment and had allegedly not paid rent since 2024. Her landlord had initiated legal action, resulting in court orders for eviction. When police entered the residence last week, they discovered her body in an advanced state of decomposition. Neighbours told officers that she was rarely seen and did not interact with others in the building.

However, several actors and artists have expressed their sorrow and concern online.

Actor Amar Khan stated that Humaira’s death reflects the state of the industry and society. “It’s a day for reflection… you face judgment based on your attire, vehicles, career, and finances,” she shared, encouraging young women to prioritise their mental well-being.

Mawra Hocane urged anyone facing challenges in the industry to reach out, saying, “I will not judge. I promise… I will do my best to be there.” Hina Altaf labeled it a call to action, writing, “She lived alone. She passed away alone. And days went by before anyone noticed.”

Adnan Siddiqui remembered Humaira as a compassionate colleague, while Ali Rehman also expressed sorrow and prayed for her peace.

Humaira gained public recognition after appearing on the reality series Tamasha Ghar and also featured in the 2015 movie Jalaibee.

Malir Jail escapee records video message before committing suicide

A 25-year-old inmate who escaped during the mass jailbreak at District Jail Malir earlier this week has died by suicide in Madni Colony in  Karachi’s Mauripur.

Police identified the deceased as Raza, a resident of Ranchore Line.

Police were alerted after the body was found, and the deceased was shifted to Civil Hospital, Karachi, for medico-legal formalities.

SHO Sardar Ali Abbasi of the Mauripur Police Station claims that Raza was in his sister’s house when he died.

He is believed to have taken his own life while alone in the house.

Raza was incarcerated at Malir Jail on March 30, 2022, in connection with a drug case that was filed at the Eidgah police station.

The jailbreak, which took place between Tuesday and Wednesday night, resulted in the escape of more than 200 inmates, including Raza.

126 escapees have voluntarily returned or been re-arrested thus far.

Police are searching Karachi for the at least 90 prisoners who are still on the lose.

A video statement recorded by Raza shortly before his death has been found. In the video, Raza says, “We all climbed over each other to get out while gunfire erupted inside the jail. I thought it was an earthquake.”

He further adds, “I was injured while escaping. I walked around the whole night, and then a man took me to Civil Hospital.” He also adds that he is innocent.

He says he spent the night there before returning to his family.

Raza’s suicide has raised serious questions about the psychological condition of the escapees and the management of the prison system.

Open manhole in Karachi claims life of 5-year-old

A five-year-old child lost his life after falling into an open manhole in the Jamshed Road area of Karachi on Monday.

“Identified as Ali, a resident of Bihar Colony, the child was returning home with his older brother after they had sold fries. As per the family’s account, he tumbled into the manhole on Jamshed Road and was stuck there for almost half an hour before a bystander was able to rescue him. The family believes that the delay in receiving medical assistance contributed to his passing.

In response to the incident, residents of Jamshed Quarters Block 1 held a protest by laying the child’s body on the road. The demonstration caused traffic disruptions in the area and was eventually ended following discussions with local officials.

Authorities confirmed that the body had been taken to a hospital to carry out legal processes. The Superintendent of Police (SP) for Jamshed Town stated that an investigation is currently ongoing.

This incident is not an isolated case, as previous fatalities have occurred in the city as a result of open manholes. Community members have continuously expressed their concerns about missing manhole covers and the inadequate response from municipal officials.

Clothing brand sealed by FBR for alleged tax fraud

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), through its Regional Tax Office (RTO) II, has sealed multiple outlets and offices of the Western clothing brand Sowears over alleged tax evasion exceeding Rs100 million.

According to FBR officials, Sowears has not integrated its Point of Sale (PoS) system with FBR’s centralised system since 2018, following a thorough examination of the business’s financial operations.

The non-compliance concealed taxable income,, costing the national exchequer money.

At least four to five major brand stores in Karachi were sealed by FBR, including those in Saima Mall, Lucky One Mall, Dolmen Mall, Ocean Mall, and Hyderi Market.

Additionally, the brand’s factory in the SITE industrial area was raided, and digital evidence and business records were seized.

The investigation also revealed that Sowears had reportedly been conducting undisclosed business in the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

The company’s Pakistani income statements made no mention of these transactions, which were reportedly handled via courier services.

The FBR is concerned about potential money laundering since it believes that these overseas transactions may include the use of fake companies and illicit bank accounts.

The inquiry is being conducted under the Income Tax Ordinance and other relevant laws, and further investigation is ongoing.

Man ‘lynched’ as religiopolitical party members storm Ahmadi worship place in Karachi

A man has allegedly been lynched after multiple workers of a religiopolitical party stormed a place of worship belonging to the Ahmadi community in Karachi’s Saddar area to stop them from performing religious rituals, reports quoted police as saying.

According to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Syed Asad Raza, around 400 Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) workers gathered at the Saddar Mobile Market near the British-era Ahmadiyya Hall.

In wake of similar incidents in the Shah Latif, Surjani and Khokhrapar areas of the port city, the DIG said, police were already deployed at the site, adding that police, rangers and district administration acted swiftly and provided protection to the Ahmadi community members present inside the worship place.

However, a man was allegedly beaten up by the TLP workers and succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, the DIG said. He added that the Ahmadi community claimed the deceased was their member and was associated with the place of worship.

“The police are ascertaining the veracity of the claims while CCTV footage is also being obtained.”

Meanwhile, Preedy Station House Officer (SHO) Shabbir Husain told the newspaper that a man, identified as Laeeq Cheema, 46, was filming the TLP workers near Hashu Centre when the mob assaulted and killed him, confirming that the deceased belonged to the Ahmadi community.

Husain claimed that around 45-50 members of the community were inside the worship place and the police had summoned a prison van to move them to a safer place.

Speaking to the newspaper, community spokesperson Amir Mehmood said that the deceased was passing through the area around 100-150 meters away from the place of worship, noting that the deceased was a known figure of their community. “Therefore, the TLP members recognised and began beating him, leading to his death.”

  • Teenaged girl dies after jumping from Karachi apartment building

Teenaged girl dies after jumping from Karachi apartment building

A young girl tragically fell to her death from the window of an eighth-floor apartment in Karachi’s North Nazimabad area.

16-year-old Anadiya was found dead on the street below the Sky Blue Apartments, located close to Isa Laboratory. A Chhipa ambulance transported her body to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Anadiya’s father, Muhammad Iqbal, who works in the private sector, has one son and four daughters. His youngest children are twins, with Anadiya being the younger of the two.

The family claims that Anadiya was undergoing therapy at a private facility for mental health problems.

Additionally, she had recently become more religiously inclined. Anadiya and her twin sister, Maryam, were at home when the tragedy occurred while their parents and two sisters had gone shopping. According to initial reports, Anadiya jumped from the eighth floor while standing near the window.

According to the police, Maryam was too devastated by her sister’s passing to make a statement, and their parents were similarly in shock. Their statements will be recorded once the family is stable.

Certain aspects of the incident, however, have already raised concerns, even though the police believe Anadiya’s death may have been intentional.

She allegedly jumped from a tiny window, which may have made it difficult for her to get through. Furthermore, her body was not found directly below the window as expected but was discovered at a considerable distance from the building.

Investigators believe these details will become clearer after speaking to the family. For now, the body has been handed over to the family following standard procedures.
