  • Dawn photographer beaten up by Rangers in Karachi

    Faysal Mujeeb, a photographer working for Dawn, was beaten up by Karachi Rangers for covering Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Yaum-i-Shuhada event.

    The event was held near ‘Nine Zero’, formerly the headquarters of the MQM led by its founder leader, Altaf Hussain.

    According to Mujeeb, he was covering the event. He recalled that the relatives of slain MQM activists had started arriving at the venue, ‘Yaadgar-i-Shuhada’ on Thursday morning and were laying rose petals on their graves, reports Dawn.

    He stated, “Some of the people present there started raising slogans in favour of Hussain, which prompted Rangers and they started detaining them. I and another media worker, Mehboob Ahmed Chishti, were also picked up.”

    Mujeeb said that he proved his identity as a press photographer and that he was on the duty assigned to him by Dawn. However, he said, the Rangers personnel did not listen to him and started beating him up and his camera and mobile phone also got smashed during the episode.

    “They kept me in detention for about an hour and subjected me to severe thrashing. I was set free only after a Rangers officer came and got my identity verified from his sources,” he revealed.

    Several organisations and journalists condemned the act.

    The National Command and Control Center (NCOC) has reportedly allowed a hundred per cent crowd capacity for Pakistan vs West Indies series at the National Stadium, Karachi.

    The three-match T20I series is all set to commence from December 13 after which the teams will face each other in the ODI series, which is part of the ICC World Cup Super League, at the same venue.

    According to Cricket Pakistan, NCOC has allowed 100 per cent capacity after a request by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

    Children up to the age of 12, who have been vaccinated, will also be able to enjoy the game at the stadium.

    Moreover, NCOC has directed PCB to follow all Covid-19 protocols for these matches.

    Meanwhile, the Windies had earlier announced their squads for the T20Is and ODIs. Match officials for the series have also been announced by PCB.

    Aleem Dar, member of ICC Elite Panel of Umpires, will team up with Ahsan Raza, one of the four Pakistani umpires in the ICC International Panel of Umpires, for the on-field umpiring duties of the first of the three T20I.

    The Windies are scheduled to arrive in Karachi on December 9.

    Sindh Bar Council Secretary, Irfan Ali Mehr, 40-year-old was shot dead in Karachi on Wednesday morning near his residence in Gulshan-e-Jauhar, reports Dawn News.

    In the morning, he left his house to drop his daughter at school. He was driving near Chappal Plaza in Block 13 of Gulistan-i- Jauhar when two armed men on a motorcycle opened the fire and shot multiple times.

    His body was moved to the hospital, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for post-mortem investigation.

    The Police reached the crime scene and sealed it from the public. They [police] collected closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the crime scene.

    CCTV footage clearly reveals that the perpetrators were wearing helmets, stopped Irfan’s car, and then shot him at point-blank range. The shooters managed to flee successfully from the spot.

    Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Qamar Raza Jiskani said that it was likely to be a targeted killing, however, the real motive would be found out after a thorough investigation.

    The bar council showed their condolences on the loss.  The lawyers across Sindh boycotted the city courts today against the attack and demanded the assailant should be arrested immediately.

    A rare white lion died, reportedly after his lungs stopped working, at the Karachi Zoo on Wednesday. A representative for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) confirmed the lion’s death, saying it had been sick for the past 13 days with pulmonary tuberculosis.

    “He was being treated by veterinarians but could not recover and died due to his illness at 11 am on Wednesday,” the spokesperson said. However, as per social media reports  the lion has allegedly been starved to death.

    Earlier Journalist Quatrina Hosain posted a video in which the lion was in very poor condition. She also tagged the City Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab in her post, asking him to take the action against those responsible.

    Actor Ayesha Omar took to her Twitter handle to speak up against the lack of funds for animal welfare at Karachi Zoo.

    Actor and writer Yasir Hussain shared the news on his Instagram account while tagging Maryam Nawaz and wrote, “Sher tha aap hi bacha lete.”

    Activist Shaniera Akram also took to her twitter to express her and disappointment.

    Earlier, other celebrities including Ahsan Khan, Areeba Habib, Ahmed Ali Butt and Anoushey Ashraf also up against the trivialising treatment of animals in Karachi Zoo.

    Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed has ordered the Karachi commissioner Muhammad Iqbal Memon to speed up the demolition process of Nasla Tower, reports Dawn.

    CJP inquired whether the demolition order had been carried out or not. To this, Memon said that he needed “guidance” from the court and wanted to say something.

    “Cut to the chase, did you demolish the building or not?” the chief justice questioned again. He grilled the commissioner and warned that he could be sent to jail over contempt of court. “Do you know where you are standing?” said Justice Qazi Mohammad Amin Ahmed, who was also heading the hearing.

    “You are constantly committing contempt of court. Is he worthy of being called a commissioner? He is a grade 18 officer who is saying such things here.”

    People on Twitter condemned the demolishing act, including the chief justice’s order while others demanded the demolishment of other places.

    However, shortly after the hearing, the commissioner arrived at the Nasla Tower to oversee the demolition work along with several other officers.

    “Nasla Tower’s demolition work had begun. It had been halted as precautionary measures were not being taken,” he said, adding that the court had issued orders to ensure lives were not lost in the demolition process.

    Provincial Minister of Punjab for Environment Protection Muhammad Rizwan claimed that there has been no smog in Punjab, including Lahore, for the last two years.

    According to the minister, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Lahore which is being observed nowadays is different and the actual rating as per Pakistan Meteorological Department is 134.

    Muhammad Rizwan, while speaking to City 42 News, said that people don’t know how to install air quality monitors. He announced that the administration is starting a plan in which people will be given education and training related to this.

    Furthermore, while maintaining his stance, he stated: “Today our department has recorded AQI 134 mark while Town Hall has 192 and Model Town has 186.”

    After this, the host of the programme said that today (Friday) the city’s quality index was at 337 and previously Lahore was on the list of the most polluted cities.

    To which he replied, ”I can say with full confidence that there has been no smog in the last two years in Punjab, including Lahore.”

    He said that even if there is no fog, the presence of smog was not possible.

    On November 13, Lahore recorded a particulate matter (PM) rating of 364, which classifies the city under the “hazardous” category of air quality.

    However, today Lahore stands at second place after Delhi and has recorded AQI 209 mark while Karachi is at fifth place with the 175 mark.

    Hidden Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras were found in a private school’s female washrooms in Karachi, reports Geo News.

    Videos of women were being made with the hidden cameras, officials from the Sindh Education Department confirmed.

    The Education Department issued a notification according to which the cameras were secretly installed in the female washroom as well as the men’s washroom used by both teachers and students.

    However, the school administration has maintained that the cameras were installed in the washrooms for “monitoring purposes”.

    According to the Sindh Educational Department, “Hidden CCTV cameras were installed behind a sheet with holes in the area of the washbasins situated with the toilets of girls and boys/washrooms, so that one can easily watch the movements of male and female students and staff,” as per Dawn.

    An inquiry committee of the inspection directorate later in the day served a notice to the school administration, asking its principal or a senior official to appear before the department on November 4.

    However, no official from the school turned up in disregard of the orders.

    After that, the Sindh Education Department on Friday suspended the registration of the said private school and asked its administration to furnish a show-cause notice.

    According to the notice, the registration of the school will remain suspended until the completion of the investigation.

    PCB announces schedule of West Indies tour of Pakistan

    The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday announced the schedule of the upcoming West Indies tour of Pakistan.

    As per the schedule, the Windies will arrive in Karachi on December 9 to play three T20Is and an equal number of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches in Pakistan.

    The series will kickstart from December 13 and will last till December 22, as per the cricket board.

    The December ODIs will form part of Pakistan’s fourth series in the Super League, which will see the top seven sides and the event host India qualify directly for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 with the remaining two sides progressing from the qualifying event.

    “After missing out on home internationals in September and October, the West Indies tour will formally kick-off of an exciting and entertaining season of men’s international cricket in Pakistan with HBL Pakistan Super League 2022 and Australia’s first full series to follow,” said PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja.

    “The West Indies have always remained one of Pakistan cricket fans’ favourite sides. I am hopeful that the NCOC will support this series by allowing maximum crowds so that the fans can watch live in action their favourite players and back both the sides,” he added.

    Supreme Court orders demolition of Nasla Tower in a week

    The Supreme Court has ordered to demolish Nasla Tower in Karachi within a week and has sought a report on it, Geo News reported.

    During the hearing, the apex court ordered to use the latest technology in the process and take all the expenses from the owner of Nasla Tower.

    The court said that within a week, the Nasla tower should be demolished by a controlled ammunition blast and no damage should be done to buildings or people near the site.

    The court directed the owner of Nasla Tower to return the money to the residents.

    The court also directed the concerned authorities to submit a report within a week.

    The district administration has issued notices to the residents of Nasla Tower to vacate the building on a court order.

    Earlier, a resident can be heard in a video saying, ‘’I will commit suicide if Nasla Tower is demolished.”
