    Pakistan’s Syed Imaad Ali wins World Youth Scrabble Championship

    Pakistan’s Syed Imaad Ali won the World Youth Scrabble Championship in Karachi on Sunday, reported Dawn.

    The 15-year-old player defeated his opponent in nine out of 13 games in Sunday’s finals as Pakistan finished first in the tournament, with Hasham Hadi Khan — another Pakistani — to qualify for the final with 26 wins, coming in fourth after winning in seven games.

    Two more Pakistani players, Ali Salman and Usman Shaukat, remained in the top 10 till the last round of the championship’s group stage but were unlucky to miss out narrowly after losing their last games.

    Syed Imaad Ali opened up an early lead in the tournament and had soared to the top position with 11 wins and one tie by the completion of the first 12 rounds.

    After this success, he is now the first and only scrabble player to win the World Youth title twice. He previously won the 2018 championship in Dubai, clinched the Junior World Scrabble Championship in Torquay, England, in November 2019, and was also the youngest player to do so.

    Pakistan was awarded the rights to hold the World English Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) Youth Cup for the second year running.

    The championship has been played annually since 2006 in different parts of the world but could not be played after 2019 due to the pandemic outbreak.

    Karachi traffic plan for Muharram 2021

    The Karachi traffic police released the traffic diversion plan for the Muharram procession that will begin from Nishtar Park and end at the Imambargah Hussainian Iranian at Kharadar, Salis Bin Parwaiz reported for The News.

    The traffic diversion plan is for Muharram 8, 9, and 10 when there will be different Muharram processions in the city.

    On Muharram 8, the procession will pass through Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto Road, Father Jaminis Road, Mehfil-e-Shah Khurasan, MA Jinnah Road, Mansfield Street, Preedy Street, Tibet Chowk, MA Jinnah Road, Chand Bibi Chowk, Nishtar Road, Nigar Cinema, Altaf Hussain Road, Denso Hall, MA Jinnah Road, Kharadar police station and Bombay Bazaar to reach the Imambargah.

    Muharram 9: a procession will start from Liaquatabad via Imambargah Martin Road to the Nishtar Park where a Majlis will be held. After the Majlis, the procession will start from Nishtar Park in the afternoon and then proceed to the Imambargah Hussain Iranian, Kharadar.

    The route will include Nishtar Park, Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto Road, Father Jaminis Road, Mehfil-e-Shah Khurasan, MA Jinnah Road, Mansfield Street, Preedy Street, Tibet Chowk, MA Jinnah Road, Boulton Market, Bombay Bazaar, Kharadar, Nawab Mahabbat Khanji Road and Hussainian Iranian Imambargah.

    When the processions will start from Nishtar Park, all traffic coming from the city side will be diverted towards Soldier Bazaar Road (Bahadur Yar Jang Road), Coast Guard, Anklesaria Chowk to Jubilee or Nishtar Road.

    Traffic coming from Nazimabad will be diverted from Lasbela towards Nishtar Road and the zoological garden to reach their destinations. The traffic coming from the Liaquatabad side will be diverted to Martin Road towards the jail side. 

    These vehicles will be allowed to proceed to Jail Road, Jamshed Road, Dadabhoy Noorji Road, Kashmir Road, Shahrah-e-Quaideen and Sharae Faisal to reach their destination.

    All traffic coming from Stadium Road side will continue through New MA Jinnah Road. These vehicles will be diverted on Dadabhoi Noorji Road towards Kashmir Road, Society Light Signal, Shahrah-e-Quaideen and Sharea Faisal.

    The traffic coming from the Super Highway and Gulberg side will be diverted from Liaquatabad No 10 towards Nazimabad No 2 and will proceed using Habib Bank Flyover, Estate Avenue Road and Sher Shah to Mauripur Road.

    To return, these vehicles will take the same route. All kinds of traffic coming from the National Highway side will be diverted from Rashid Minhas Road towards Stadium Road, Sir Shah Suleman Road, Hassan Square, Liaquatabad No 10 and Nazimabad No 2, and will proceed via Habib Bank Flyover, Estate Avenue Road, Shershah to Mauripur Road. For the return journey, these vehicles will adopt the same route.

    Traffic will not be allowed to proceed along the route of the procession from Gurumandir. These vehicles will be diverted to Bahadur Yar Jang Road. All the vehicular traffic coming from Shahrah-e-Quaideen will not be permitted to proceed towards Numaish, except the participants of the procession and those with stickers on their windscreens allotted from the traffic police, and diverted from the Society signal.

    Traffic on MA Jinnah Road will not be allowed from Preedy Street, Aga Khan-III Road and Mansfield Street to proceed towards Saddar.

    No traffic will be allowed to pass MA Jinnah Road-Preedy Street junction until the procession has passed the intersection. All kinds of traffic coming from the zoo and Aga Khan-III Road will be allowed till Anklesaria Hospital.

    A 106-year-old woman in Karachi has recovered from coronavirus after contracting the Delta variant, ARY News reported.

    Haseen Bibi had been admitted to a Covid-19 centre established at Karachi’s Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical College Lyari. She successfully fought the battle against the deadly Delta variant and has been discharged from the Covid ward.

    The hospital staff, along with her family, celebrated her recovery by cutting a cake at the medical centre.

    Last year in July, a 103-year-old man recovered from the coronavirus in Booni Chitral.

    The Delta variant was detected in India for the first time in September 2020 and is more dangerous and contagious than the other Covid-19 variants.

  • Karachi woman tortured to death over parking spot

    A woman was tortured to death in Karachi over a parking issue.

    As per reports, the incident was reported in Karachi’s North Nazimabad Block L, where a woman argued with a man named Farhan over parking his vehicle in front of her home.

    Later, the man along with his accomplices barged into the house of the woman and tortured her to death.

    Earlier this year in Karachi, a man was killed when he refrained boys from playing cricket in front of his house in North Karachi.

    According to the police, the incident happened in North Karachi’s Sector 5-D, where four boys attacked a 31-year-old man named Rehan with the bat and wicket when he asked the boys not to play cricket in front of his house.

    Rehan was taken to a nearby hospital, but he could not survive. Police arrested the boys.

    Man confesses to raping, killing six-year-old in Karachi: Police

    Karachi police arrested a suspect who confessed to raping and killing a six-year-old girl in Korangi, Karachi.

    As per reports, her body was found wrapped in a thick mat at 6 in the morning on Wednesday last week. The post-mortem report of the girl revealed that she was sexually assaulted and her neck was broken.

    According to the police, Zakir, the main suspect, said in his statement that he took the girl in a rickshaw at around 11.30pm and drove around the rickshaw for an hour. He said he was intoxicated when he took the girl to the Sunday bazaar ground around 12.30pm in Korangi.

    According to Zakir’s statement, the victim was still alive after he raped her and was semi-conscious. He said she “suddenly jumped and broke her neck”.

    The criminal said he threw the girl in a garbage dump and told his wife that he had been on a ride after going home.

    Police said that the man bought a ticket to Multan and went home to get his clothes. He called his wife and said he wanted to leave Karachi along with his children

  • Sindh to go into complete lockdown from tomorrow

    The Sindh government has decided to impose lockdown in the province till August 8, starting from tomorrow. The decision was taken during a provincial coronavirus task force meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Friday.

    The decision to impose the lockdown has been taken to curb the recent surge of Covid-19 cases in the province. During the meeting of Provincial Corona Task Force, Sindh Health Secretary Dr Kazim Jato said that the positivity rate in Karachi during the last 24 hours was 23 per cent, 14.52 per cent in Hyderabad and 2.9 per cent in Sukkur.

    The following decisions were taken in the meeting today:

    • Vaccination cards of citizens roaming the streets will be checked.
    • All markets will remain closed during the lockdown.
    • All government offices will be closed from next week.
    • Pharmacies will remain open.
    • Unvaccinated government t employees will not get salaries after August 31.

    However, businesses associated with the export sector will be allowed to operate.

    As per the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan has recorded 4,537 new cases of Covid-19 with the positivity rate of 7.79 per cent.

    Leslie Gilliams, the second runner-up of MasterChef US’ fifth season, wishes to set up a restaurant in Karachi.

    The master chef contestant, Leslie Gilliams, shared a screenshot of an Instagram user, Shaikh Mehmed, who wished to invite him to open a restaurant in Karachi, Pakistan.

     “I’m thinking of starting a go fund me page so I can open up a restaurant in Karachi Pakistan,” he replied. “I have a lot of fans in Bangladesh and in Karachi, Pakistan. Who wants to be the first to donate?” Leslie wrote in the caption.

    Leslie was a strong competitor during his time on the reality cooking show.

    He managed to survive six elimination challenges. He has won the mystery box and elimination test once each.

  • Six-year-old girl raped, killed in Karachi

    A six-year-old girl was raped and then killed in Karachi on  Wednesday. The girl went missing from Karachi’s Korangi area and was later found dead in a dumpster in the city.

    SSP Korangi Shahjahan Khan said that a girl from Korangi was reported missing. Her parents told the police that their daughter went to play outside but did not return.

    Taking action after the parents’ complaint, the police started an operation and found the body of the girl. The minor was allegedly raped and later choked to death.

    Medical Laboratory Observer, Dr Samia, said samples for DNA and other tests have been collected. The detailed report will confirm how many suspects raped the girl, she added.

    As per reports, the body of the girl named Maham was shifted to the hospital for postmortem. The autopsy report confirmed that the girl was killed after being sexually assaulted.
