    Friend kills 17-year-old for eating his girlfriend’s burger

    A 17-year-old young man was allegedly killed by his close friend for eating a zinger burger the suspect had ordered for his ‘girlfriend’, the police investigation has concluded in Karachi.


    The victim was identified as Ali Kerio, son of Javed Kerio, a Karachi District South sessions judge, while the suspect shooter, Daniyal Nazeer Mir Bahar, is the son of Nazir Ahmed Mir Bahar, a retired Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), reports Danial Syed of Geo News.


    As per initial investigations, Daniyal invited his girlfriend, Shazia, to his house — located in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase V — where his friend Ali Kerio and his brother Ahmar Kerio were also present. The suspect ordered two zinger burgers for himself and Shazia, but Ali purportedly consumed half of one burger, which enraged Daniyal so much that he seized his security guard’s assault rifle and opened fire on Ali, who later succumbed to gunshot injuries on the way to the hospital.


    The unfortunate incident happened on Feburary 8.


    The investigating officer (IO) has submitted the report to higher authorities, implicating the police officer’s son in the crime. Daniyal is currently in jail as the legal proceedings of the case continue.

    A video has emerged online showing a girl who got abducted from Karachi getting forcefully married in Rahim Yar Khan.

    The girl, named Asma, allegedly stated her age as 19 in the marriage certificate issued in Rahim Yar Khan, reported the Nikahkhawan. The nikah ceremony took place at his house and he told ARY News that he asked the girl to go back but she declined stating her mother will sell her to an old man if she goes back.

    On the other hand, the girl’s mother, asserted her daughter’s age to be between 14 and 15 years old. She disclosed that the man, who allegedly lured her daughter into marriage, won’t let her talk with Asma in person nor over the phone.

    Karachi police authorities are currently in the process of seeking permission from the Home Department to initiate necessary actions, stressing that only the statement of the girl can confirm whether the marriage occurred with her consent or under compulsion.


    However, the police authorities of Rahim Yar Khan have asserted that the girl provided a statement affirming that the marriage was entered into of her own free will.

    Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced on Saturday that the process of privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will be completed by June this year. Islamabad airport might also be privatized shortly after.

    “The government has no business being in business,” the minister declared at a Saturday afternoon news briefing, explaining the government’s plan to divest from state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

    “We expect the bids for PIA to come in the next two to three weeks, and by the end of June or early July, we can move it to the investors,” he said. “The Islamabad airport would be the next,” he added, “followed by the airports in Karachi and Lahore.”

    The finance minister didn’t respond on a question when asked if Pakistan is selling its skies to prospective buyers.

    Mr Aurangzeb didn’t give an explanation when a journalist asked if the government will keep some shares in PIA after privatisation or sell all its shares.

    The minister wrapped up his visit to Washington DC on Sunday with 62 meetings in a week. During these meetings, he explained decisions, made pledges, and sought understanding from both multilateral and bilateral donors.

    Recklessly drifting BMW lands doctor in jail

    A doctor has been apprehended and his BMW confiscated by the police for reportedly causing significant damage to recently constructed infrastructure in Defence Housing Authority, Karachi, with his allegedly drifting car.

    The incident, which occurred in Bukhari Commercial Area, resulted in substantial harm to the area’s development, according to a senior police official.

    Dr Salman is currently being interrogated as his BMW was allegedly involved in the incident.

    The police revealed that two luxury cars were involved in the drifting, one of which belonged to the detained doctor, while efforts are under way to apprehend the owner/driver of the other vehicle.

    The complaint, filed by a sub-engineer of the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC), highlighted the negligence of the drivers, who caused damage to the official infrastructure through overspeeding and drifting, and then abandoned their vehicles at the scene.

    The incident, which occurred on April 12, follows a similar event on April 10 involving another unidentified car and driver. Both incidents have led to the registration of FIRs against the drivers underSections 279 and 427 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

    As street crime escalates in Karachi, HRCP voices concern

    Street crime in Karachi has been on an alarming rise since the beginning of the year and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has voiced its concern on the matter.

    Once known as the city of lights, Karachi has long been the victim of street crimes and the breakdown of law and order, making the lives of common people difficult.

    In 2023, over 90,000 crimes were reported in the metropolitan city which was, unfortunately, an increased number as compared to 2022 when 80,000 crimes were registered.

    As per the reports, out of 90,000 incidents a total of 134 citizens were brutally murdered, hundreds injured over resisting robberies, while 411 civilians were killed in various incidents.

    HRCP released a statement on X saying, “The first quarter of 2024 has followed the same pattern. While vigilantism and increased brutality in response by citizens is not the answer, the government’s failure to address rising crime levels is shocking.”

    It further stated that the core reasons for this upward tick in crimes have always been “unemployment” and “economic desperation” which must be urgently addressed to restore law and order in the city.

    The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has intensified efforts to combat unauthorised constructions across Karachi, leading to the demolition of several structures, including wedding halls.

    In a recent operation targeting illegal construction in District Central Karachi, SBCA personnel faced gunfire from unidentified individuals. Despite the danger, SBCA officials pressed on, successfully demolishing the fourth floor of a targeted building.

    The Director General of SBCA, Abdul Rasheed Solangi, swiftly directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Central to apprehend the culprits and initiate legal action against those responsible for the shooting.

    Solangi stressed the crucial need for resolute enforcement against illegal construction, commending the dedication and integrity of the SBCA staff. He assured them of unwavering support to ensure their safety and effectiveness in carrying out their duties amidst challenges.

    The crackdown on illegal construction continues across various parts of the city. Abdul Rasheed Solangi, along with the Demolition Squad, oversaw the demolition of multiple buildings in areas such as Essa Nagri, Paposh Nagar, and Gulberg.

    Additionally, over 13 illegal structures have been dismantled in localities including Saddar Town, Jamshed Town, Gulberg, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

    Director General Abdul Rasheed Solangi personally supervises the ongoing crackdown on illegal construction, underscoring the authority’s commitment to uphold building regulations and ensure public safety.

    Meanwhile, Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani has issued directives to eradicate all forms of unauthorised construction in the city. He emphasised the importance of taking stringent action against any SBCA officials found complicit in facilitating illegal construction.

    The number of gastroenteritis cases in Karachi has been steadily increasing, a statistic that doctors claim is ticking upwards because of the consumption of contaminated water for drinking purposes owing to the shortage of gas and its soaring prices which has forced many people to use water without boiling it.


    Water supplies to the city had been found to be highly contaminated on multiple occasions. The general practice is to properly boil or filter to make it safe for drinking.


    Faiza Ilyas from Dawn talked to the doctors at the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), where around 1,500 patients daily report to the emergency department, shared that the cases of gastroenteritis had seen a rise in recent days.“Currently, gastroenteritis constitutes 70 to 80 percent of our cases being reported at the hospital’s emergency department on a daily basis. There are a few cases of cholera as well,” shared CHK additional medical superintendent Dr Liaquat Ali Halo.


    Patients have been complaining of acute watery diarrhea and are administered intravenous fluids for rehydration.


    Most patients are discharged within a few hours while some require admission.


    Dr. Halo said the reasons behind the increase in gastroenteritis cases as lack of chlorination and filtration been a major factor that contributed to frequent episodes of outbreaks of gastroenteritis in the city, besides consumption of contaminated foods from roadsides and poor hand hygiene.“Many patients tell us that they are forced to use unboiled water for drinking as gas supplies are highly inadequate in their localities and the filtered water has become costlier,” Dr. Halo said, adding that inadequate cooking and eating contaminated raw food and vegetables could also cause illnesses.


    Commenting on the city’s public health situation, Dr. Altaf Hussain Khatri, a senior general physician based in the old city area, said gas shortage amid a drastic increase in prices of food and utilities had made the survival of poor families extremely challenging.


    “The gas shortage has further compounded miseries of the masses and compromised public health,” he said, adding that along with gastroenteritis, patients with respiratory infections were still reporting in high numbers to general physicians.


    “They are very effective as they filter sediments and kill pathogens,” he said.

    Sindh Home Minister Zia ul Hasan Lanjar has said that Karachi’s law and order situation is being “exaggerated”. In a press briefing held on Sunday, he said “Street crime exists in Karachi, however, it has been exaggerated in media.”

    On March 13, the provincial cabinet was informed that nearly 16,000 street crimes had been recorded in Karachi since January 2024. He termed street crime as “part of daily life.” Since January, 49 citizens have been killed resisting street crimes.

    The Minister showed sympathy with the families of those who lost their lives, stating that measures were being taken to end the wave in Karachi, including action against the station house officer (SHO) where crime would occur.

    Furthermore, he said that around 1,000 policemen would be sent to Kashmore District for an operation against the criminals in that area.
