Khan can do anything to get back to power: Khawaja Asif

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif recently commented on the Geo News programme about former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s admission of calling the protests outside GHQ, saying, “This is just the first step by Khan towards apology.”

Asif stated, “They [PTI] are very sharp, they can do anything to return to power. They will even touch their feet if they have to get back to power. ”

He said, “The problem is that nobody trusts them [PTI] now.”

The Defence Minister was, however, confident that any potential moves by PTI to warm up to the establishment would not threaten their government.

“There is no danger to us if the founder PTI apologises, if they apologise and become part of the political stream, what can we object to?” said Asif

Khawaja Asif says Fitch report has credibility; ‘People ready to join technocrat govt’

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has disclosed that there are rumours of suspending the elections in the country, and the government would defend such a situation if it arises.

Speaking to Geo News, Asif stated, “There is an uncertain environment in the country, in which the politicians as well the judiciary are responsible.”

He also stated that there is a danger of constitutional meltdown in the country and agreed with the recent Fitch report about the collapse of the current government in 18 months. He said, “People are ready to join the technocratic government now.”

Interestingly, he also admitted that the ban on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was premature because consultation with allies is necessary.

BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, has forecast an unstable economic-political situation in Pakistan with its prediction that Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is unlikely to get out of prison soon.

“We expect that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government will remain in power over the coming 18 months and will succeed in pushing through with International Monetary Fund (IMF) mandated fiscal reforms,” predicted BMI, in its Pakistan Country Risk Report for the fourth quarter of the calendar year 2024.

On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub criticized tapping citizens’ mobile phones.

“We are in the midst of war against terrorism. I will support phone tapping in the current situation,” the Defense Minister told Arab News.

“When Imran Khan was on good terms with the establishment, every legitimate and illegitimate thing seemed acceptable to him. Today, his followers find the same thing hateful,” Khawaja Asif pointed out.

Zulfiqar Ali Badr, spokesperson for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, has said that the Dubai properties of the former Foreign Minister and Aseefa Bhutto Zardari are declared before the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The spokesperson said, “The entire world knows that Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Aseefa Bibi grew up in exile.”

His remarks came as a global team of investigative journalists revealed details of properties owned by the world’s elite in Dubai.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif criticised the leaked property records, stating that there was “nothing new in them.”

He also claimed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the names of prominent figures like Pervez Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz, Faisal Vawda, and others were also in the Panama leaks, which they didn’t ever deny.

Similarly, independent senator Faisal Vawda stated on Tuesday that the “Dubai leaks” are part of propaganda, and the timing of the publication of the report is “questionable” as Pakistan is nearing attracting foreign investment.

Khawaja Asif says Afghanistan ‘source of terrorism’

Federal Minister for Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan is unlike any other border in the world – terming Afghanistan a ‘source of terrorism’ for Pakistan.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he said, “In view of the increase in terrorist incidents, there is a need for a fundamental change in the border situation. The source of terrorism in Pakistan is in Afghanistan and despite our efforts, Kabul is not making any progress in this direction.”

He also stated that Afghan authorities were aware of all the terrorist hideouts of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operating against Pakistan inside their territory but cooperation from Afghans on this has been negligible.

The Minister’s comments came in the aftermath of the unfortunate terrorist attack that claimed the lives of six people including five Chinese engineers in Shangla. More importantly, over the past few days a string of terrorist attacks took place including Gawadar Port Authority Complex, PNS Siddiqi naval airbase in Turbat.

We don’t want armed conflict with Afghanistan, says Khawaja Asif

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that Pakistan does not want armed conflict with neighbouring Afghanistan, stressing that using force was the last option.

The defence minister, in an interview with Voice of America on Wednesday, stated that Pakistan might block the trade corridor it gave to Afghanistan for trading with India. He added that Pakistan had the right to stop helping Kabul if it didn’t control terrorists against Pakistan who were active in Afghanistan.

“If Afghanistan treats us like an enemy, then why should we give them a trade corridor?” Asif said.

He passed the remarks after Pakistan launched intelligence-based anti-terrorist operations in the border regions in response to several terrorist attacks in Pakistan.

However, Zabiullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Taliban administration, said in a statement that “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan does not allow anyone to compromise security by using Afghan territory.”

Ex-Army Chief Bajwa threatens PML-N’s Khawaja Asif

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif revealed on Shahzeb Khanzada’s show last night that former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Qamar Javed Bajwa threatened him that he would hold a press conference against him after the minister’s criticism about the previous army chief’s policy of rehabilitating Tehreek Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants back into the country.

Khawaja Asif pointed out that when the former army chief previously gave a briefing to the parliament,
“A rosy picture was painted that if the Taliban were to return to Pakistan, it would usher in a new era of peace and brotherhood.”
He further said “Its not wrong or blasphemous of me to suggest that they return to the same forum and explain.”

Asif said that he did not insult anyone by asking that Bajwa and Gen (ret.) Faiz Hameed be summoned before the national parliament to give a briefing about their flawed policy. He reiterated, “What Pakistan is currently going through is basically a ‘continuity’ of that infamous briefing that the ex-generals gave us.”

When the anchor asked him whether he received any advice from his party to stay away from this topic, he replied that they did not, and it is a matter of principle for him.
