KP CM’s aide faces backlash for calling Kohat drone ‘suspicious’, not naming Taliban

Shafi Jan, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (CM) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Information and Public Relations, faced criticism after referring to a drone intercepted over Kohat as “suspicious” without naming the Afghan Taliban.

In a post on X, Shafi Jan wrote: “The police’s special team took timely action and neutralized a suspicious drone using an anti-drone system, the police said. The on-duty special police squad noticed the flight of a suspicious drone in the area and immediately acted. Using anti-drone technology, the team jammed the drone’s signals, causing its motor to stop and forcing it to fall to the ground, DPO Kohat Shahbaz Elahi stated.”

The incident occurred amid repeated cross-border drone activity linked to the Afghan Taliban. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), two children were injured in Quetta, while one civilian was hurt in Kohat and another in Rawalpindi.

The statement said the attacks appeared intended to spread fear among the public and reflected what it described as the Afghan Taliban’s terrorist mindset.

The ISPR further said that while the Afghan Taliban attempt to portray themselves as victims to gain international sympathy, they continue to target civilians through proxies and drone attacks.

“Pakistan’s people and its Armed Forces are absolutely clear about the true nature and intentions of the terrorist militia-for-hire that rules Afghanistan,” the statement added.

Shafi Jan’s description of the drone as “suspicious” prompted strong reactions online. One user wrote, “They were not suspicious; they came from Afghanistan, which the Afghan Taliban government openly announced. But how dare you even mention their name?”

Another commented, “No city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, big or small, is safe, not even at the village level. Therefore, pay special attention to terrorism in your province.”

Some reactions focused on the technological threat, saying, “These drones have reached Islamabad—this is the state of Afghanistan’s drones, who don’t even have such special technology. We should learn from the Iran-Israel war and further improve our own technology.”

Others criticized government action, writing, “Why don’t you go to funerals anymore? Ever since you’ve been in government, you’re scared of terrorists. What revolution will you bring?”

New oil, gas field discovered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Pakistan has reported a modest discovery of new oil and gas deposits in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, according to state media, as authorities seek to expand domestic exploration and reduce reliance on imports.

The discovery was made at the Lumshiwal Formation of the Baragzai X-01 exploratory well. During a Cased Hole Drill Stem Test (CHDST-04) conducted in the Hangu and Lumshiwal formations, the well produced 225 barrels of oil per day and 1.01 million standard cubic feet per day of gas through a 32/64-inch choke at a wellhead flowing pressure of 190 psig.

The state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported that Baragzai X-01 (Slant) was spudded on December 30, 2024, to assess hydrocarbon potential in multiple formations, including Lockhart, Hangu, Lumshiwal, Samana Suk, Shinawari, Datta and Kingriali. The well was drilled to a total depth of 5,170 metres into the Kingriali Formation.

Citing the Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC), APP said three earlier cased hole drill stem tests were conducted in the Kingriali, Datta, and Samana Suk plus Shinawari formations, which also yielded oil and gas. The latest test at Lumshiwal confirmed hydrocarbon presence in the block.

The discovery was made under the Nashpa Exploration Licence. OGDC holds a 65 percent working interest, in partnership with Pakistan Petroleum Limited with 30 percent and Government Holdings Private Limited with five percent.

In a statement, OGDC said the find would contribute to domestic hydrocarbon output and add to the reserves base of the joint venture partners.

Pakistan has reported multiple discoveries in recent months. In January, an exploratory well in Kohat flowed at 4,100 barrels of oil per day and 10.5 million standard cubic feet per day of gas. In September 2025, Pakistan Petroleum Limited announced a discovery in Attock district, while Mari Energies reported a gas find in North Waziristan.

According to data cited by Topline Securities, Sindh accounts for 62 percent of gas production and 40 percent of oil output. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa contributes 41 percent of crude oil production, Punjab 18 percent, and Balochistan one percent.

  • Three arrested after doctor found dead in Abbottabad

Three arrested after doctor found dead in Abbottabad

Authorities in Abbottabad discovered the body of Dr. Warda Mushtaq on Monday, four days after she was reported missing. Her remains were located in the wooded area of Thandiyani and subsequently transported to a hospital for an autopsy.

As per police sources, the doctor had not been seen since Thursday, prompting her colleagues and members of the Provincial Doctors Association and Grand Health Alliance to stage protests. They had previously warned that demonstrations would escalate to hospitals throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa if she was not found by Monday.

Following the discovery of her body, hospital personnel obstructed the Karakoram Highway at Fawara Chowk, protesting against the authorities for what they termed “delayed action.”

Police have arrested three people in connection with the case  Rida, a friend of Dr Warda Mushtaq; Rida’s husband; and a third suspect named Pervez  while efforts continue to apprehend the main accused, Shamrez.

District Police Officer (DPO) Haroon Rasheed shared with reporters that Dr. Warda’s remains were retrieved “after more than six hours of effort” from a deep ravine in Lari Banota. He stated that the remains were handed over to the family following the autopsy.

The doctor, employed at a government hospital, had left the institution with her friend Rida on Thursday to address a dispute regarding 67 tolas of gold. As per a complaint lodged by Dr. Warda’s father, the gold was entrusted to Rida for safekeeping in 2023 when the doctor traveled to Dubai. Upon her return, she requested the gold back, but according to the FIR, the suspect continued to avoid her.

The FIR was filed under Section 365 of the Pakistan Penal Code, detailing that the doctor’s last known whereabouts were at Jadoon Plaza in Mandian, where CCTV footage captured her with Rida before she lost contact.

Rida later provided a written statement to the DPO alleging that she had returned the gold on Thursday at the plaza. She claimed, “I returned 67 tolas of gold to her that same day, and she handed me five cheques totaling Rs8.3 million.”

She further stated, “After leaving the plaza, I had no further contact with her, and I possess no information about her,” asserting that she first learned of the situation while attending a wedding. Rida insisted that her husband was being framed as part of an effort “to tarnish his reputation.”

The DPO mentioned that investigators gathered CCTV footage, call data records, and additional technical data, interviewed over 35 individuals, and subsequently arrested Rida, Nadeem Zeb, and Pervez.

He indicated that Rida led the doctor to an under-construction house on Rehman Street under the guise of returning the gold and entrusted her to two men, Shamrez and Nadeem. The doctor was later murdered and buried in a pit within the Lari Banota forest area.

Police teams have been dispatched to Peshawar to locate the main suspect, identified as Shamrez. Vehicles used in the abduction, stamp papers, and cheques related to the gold dispute have been confiscated, while postmortem and forensic reports are currently under review.

The incident has sparked extensive outrage. The Provincial Doctors Association, Grand Health Alliance, and hospital staff have withdrawn their services, providing only emergency care. Nurses, paramedics, and other staff have joined the protests, demanding accountability for those involved.

District Bar Association Haripur also condemned the killing and demanded legal action, saying the case should be tried under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The district chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Haripur, Tahir Atiq Siddiqi, termed the incident a failure of authorities to protect lives. Awami National Party provincial president Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the murder raised concerns about women’s safety and insisted it could have been prevented had authorities “taken the matter seriously.”

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi sought a report on the development and called it a “serious and unforgettable incident.” He said, “I share the grief of the doctors’ community across the province and the family of the martyred doctor,” and assured that those responsible would face consequences.

FIA pinpoints illegal kidney transplant networks in KP

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has identified five networks engaged in illegal kidney transplants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, culminating a year-long inquiry that has led to multiple arrests and seizures throughout the province.

Investigators reported that the networks ran transplant operations through a web of contacts, coordinators, and local agents.

Over the past year, authorities have arrested eighteen suspects, while five transplant centers in Peshawar, Nowshera, and Mardan have been shut down. The centers operated from private residences to evade detection, with FIA estimating the per site cost at approximately PKR 3 million.

Officials noted that the networks utilized agents who preyed on financially struggling individuals. Many donors originated from various regions in Punjab, such as Lahore, often emerging from brick-kiln communities where families have limited financial opportunities.

Agents matched the donors with patients, most of whom came from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Typically, samples from both patient and donor were collected in Peshawar before transplant teams transported patients to Rawalpindi for procedures.

The estimated cost for a transplant ranged between PKR 4 million to 5 million. Donors generally received around PKR 300,000, while the remainder was allocated among agents, surgeons, and facilitators. FIA confirmed that numerous individuals connected to these networks reside in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The operations functioned through private meetings, restricted locations, and communication among coordinators managing logistics, donor movements, and matching.

This year, eight FIRs have been filed, while the medical licenses of surgeons associated with illegal activities have been revoked. Under current laws, individuals participating in the illegal organ trade may face prison sentences of up to ten years.

Seven die as protest turns violent in Tirah

At least seven people died in a shooting targeting a protest outside a military installation, held in response to the killing of a girl in the Tirah Valley of Khyber district, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), on Sunday.

Following the incident, security officials met with tribal elders, announcing compensation for the victims, and assured that medical treatment would be provided to the injured. The provincial government has also announced separate compensation for the deceased and wounded.

According to media reports, hundreds of tribesmen had brought the body of a girl, who they claimed was killed in a mortar strike in the Darbar locality of Peer Mela in Zakhakhel a day earlier, to the Brigade Headquarters in Bagh-Maidan Markaz early on Sunday morning.

Citing eye-witnesses, reports stated that the situation turned violent when an enraged mob, comprising mostly young men, acted against calls by local elders to remain calm, and initially torched an excavator parked outside Brigade Headquarters, and then attempted to force open the garrison’s main gate.

Security personnel guarding the installation reportedly opened fire to control the crowd.

Videos circulating on social media of the incident show an excavator on fire. Some protesters can also be seen pelting stones at the Brigade Headquarters while attempting to forcibly open the main gate. In the footage, protesters could be seen running for cover as gunshots rang out.

Citing security officials, reports claimed that the local sector commander met with elders in Tirah and assured them of his full support in meeting their legitimate demands.

Apart from financial assistance to the deceased families, the elders also demand to file a case against those involved in the death of the girl; vacation of the occupied houses of local citizens, end to unnecessary harassment at the security check posts.

On the elders’ demand, security forces announced compensation for the families of the deceased and the injured.

A statement issued from the KP chief minister’s secretariat said the provincial government was grieved over the loss of lives in Tirah and the deceased will be given Rs10 million and Rs2.5 million to the injured.

The statement read that the KP government was committed to sustainable peace, mutual respect and public safety, adding it had called a jirga comprising tribal elders and public representatives to address their issues.

Rs40 billion corruption scandal rocks KP: Luxury properties, including Parizaad bungalow, confiscated

Shocking new disclosures have rocked Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as details, photos and videos of luxury vehicles and properties have emerged in the mega Rs40 billion Kohistan corruption scandal.

According to reports, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has escalated the case by turning the inquiry into a formal investigation, signaling major crackdown on corruption.

Reports quoted NAB as saying that it had also recovered and frozen assets worth whopping Rs25 billion in said case. Interestingly, the assets included a luxury bungalow featured in the popular drama serial Parizaad.

Among the seized assets are also 77 high-end vehicles, including Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche Taycan, Toyota Land Cruiser, Fortuner and Hilux Revo, worth Rs940 million.

Over Rs1 billion in cash, foreign currency and more than three kilogrammes of gold have also been taken into custody by NAB.

While a total of Rs5 billion across 73 bank accounts has been frozen, the anti-graft watchdog has also confiscated 109 properties across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Abbottabad and Mansehra. These include four farmhouses, 12 commercial plazas, two commercial plots, 30 houses, 12 shops and food courts, 25 flats and penthouses, and 175 kanals of agricultural land.

The estimated value of these properties is around Rs17 billion.

While the accused are said to have acted with chilling audacity, allegedly siphoning off billions of rupees from the public exchequer without drawing the attention of any financial regulatory authority, arrests of key figures are expected within the next few hours, reports quoted officials as saying.
