‘I was under a lot of stress and pressure’: Fawad Khan on working in Abir Gulaal

Fawad Khan, one of Pakistan’s most beloved stars, is stepping back into the world of romance with Abir Gulaal, his latest romantic comedy co-starring Bollywood’s Vaani Kapoor.

In an interview with Gulf News, Fawad said cinema was begging for such a film because everything is now very intense, dark or dramatic – a thriller or too much of blood and gore. “This is more like a palate cleanser. The best foods are the ones with the simplest ingredients where you can taste everything individually. And that only happens when there’s no complication in it. So, this is that kind of a meal.”

Fawad candidly admitted he was concerned about whether the film would even reach audiences, “I was very worried. There was a lot of pressure around the film’s release,” he shared. “But my belief in the story and its message helped me push forward.”

He also opened up about relationships and the idea of “the one”. “Having a relationship is a journey in life,” he said.

“Over the course of time, you come to that equilibrium point. It may feel like love at first sight and it can work out, but you have to accept people with their flaws. That’s what we’re becoming more intolerant of… we just feel everything has to serve one’s own purpose. If something bothers you about your partner, you have to take it in your stride and make it work. That is a very big part of commitment. If you keep waiting forever, you might just wait forever.”

To a question about the viral teaser that showed Fawad serenading Vaani with Kumar Sanu’s Kuch Na Kaho from the Bollywood film ‘1942: A Love Story’, which drew widespread reactions and a flood of memes online, Vaani said, “The world is healing is what I’ve heard.”

But even that heart-melting moment wasn’t without nerves. “I was definitely under a lot of stress and pressure,” Fawad revealed. “I don’t sing very often. I think of myself as a bathroom singer. But it’s such an iconic song, so I was nervous.”

Vaani also said she got lucky to be selected as co-star opposite Fawad.

Abir Gulaal is set to be released in Pakistan and other global territories on September 12. The film will not be released in India.

Cause of death revealed for investigator who died suddenly during ‘Annabelle’ doll tour

A cause of death has been confirmed for Dan Rivera, a paranormal investigator who was found dead in July following an event in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, that featured the infamous Annabelle doll.

Rivera, a 54-year-old Army veteran and senior lead investigator with the Connecticut-based New England Society for Psychic Research, died on July 13, just a day after the event involving the allegedly haunted doll known from horror folklore.

On Thursday, September 4, Adams County Coroner Francis Dutrow announced that Rivera’s death was cardiac-related and classified as natural. “Mr Rivera had a known history of cardiac issues, which were consistent with the findings,” Dutrow stated.

He also clarified that the doll was not present in the room at the time of his passing.

Earlier, a report from the Pennsylvania State Police had also described the circumstances of Rivera’s death. According to the report, officers responded to a hotel in Straban Township, Adams County, where Rivera was found deceased in his room by hotel staff.

Authorities noted that there was nothing suspicious or out of the ordinary at the scene.

Rivera had reportedly been with colleagues earlier that morning but told them he was feeling unwell and returned to his hotel room. It remains unclear what specific symptoms he was experiencing.

At the time of the incident, Rivera was part of a tour in Gettysburg showcasing Annabelle, which the New England Society for Psychic Research claims is “demonically possessed”.

Annabelle’s origins trace back to 1968, when she was reportedly gifted to a nursing student, who later brought the doll to the apartment she shared with her roommate.

The doll has been a part of pop culture in recent years after it was featured in The Conjuring film series, latest instalment of which was released in the United States (US) on Sept 4.

France bids farewell to screen legend Alain Delon

As tributes for film legend Alain Delon poured in from around the globe following his death at 88, France was preparing on Monday its farewell to one of its greatest stars.

No national tribute has been planned, as Delon had made it clear he did not want one. He said he wanted to be buried near his dogs on his property in Douchy in central France where he died.He had already started sounding out the local authorities there, Christophe Hurault, the sub-prefect of Loiret, told AFP. The prefecture “had given its agreement in principle”.His three children, Anthony, Anouchka and Alain-Fabien, having squabbled bitterly for months over his medical treatment, spoke in a unified voice Sunday when they announced their father’s death. Now they have to manage the funeral of the screen icon, deciding whether to limit it to close family or extend it to the cinema world.Delon, naturally, dominated the front pages of France’s newspapers Monday, many of them featuring full-page portraits of the actor in his prime.”The Last Samurai”, wrote Le Figaro for its front-page headline, a reference to one of his most famous roles, as the enigmatic assassin in Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 thriller “Le Samourai”.

    – End of an era –

Delon’s performances in some of the greatest films of the 1960s and 70s were widely praised, his charisma on screen impossible to ignore. He was one of the last living legends of a golden era for French cinema in the 1960s.Fellow 60s star Brigitte Bardot, 89, told AFP Delon “leaves a huge void that nothing, nobody, can fill”.French President Emmanuel Macron called him a “French monument” who “played legendary roles and made the world dream”.His death was covered by newspapers around the world, with the New York Times, Washington Post and New York Post all publishing lengthy obituaries. The Washington Post described him as the “angel-faced tough guy of international cinema”, while The Hollywood Reporter said he was the “seductive star of European cinema”.”Mesmeric and beautiful, Alain Delon was one of cinema’s most mysterious stars,” The Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw wrote.Germany’s Spiegel called him “Europe’s James Dean”, while Sueddeutsche Zeitung said the “aura of the handsome angel of death made him a legend”.Italy, where he spent much of his career, also gave extensive coverage to his passing. “There will never be another actor like Delon, unique and immortal”, wrote Il Corriere della Sera.La Stampa and La Repubblica bid “adieu to the legend of French cinema”.”For me, he was a legend,” 26-year-old moviegoer Victor Roussel told AFP before a showing of his 1963 film “The Leopard” at a Paris cinema Sunday.”Alain Delon really represents French cinema with a capital ‘C’”.

    – Controversial views –

While he had legions of fans around the world, his personal life and political opinions divided opinion.Delon’s relationship with women caused controversy. His sons accused him of domestic violence, which Delon denied while admitting slapping women during quarrels.Delon also drew criticism for supporting Jean-Marie Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Front, who was in favour of the death penalty and spoke against same-sex relationships.Feminists were also appalled by the lifetime achievement award the Cannes Film Festival gave him in 2019.He lived his later years largely as a recluse, though his personal life kept him in the headlines. In 2023, his three children filed a complaint against his live-in assistant Hiromi Rollin, accusing her of harassment and threatening behaviour. The siblings went on to wage a public battle in the media and the courts, arguing over his health, which worsened after a stroke in 2019.Delon lived out his final years in the small village of Douchy, surrounded by high walls, where he planned to be buried not far from his dogs.Outside the entrance to his home, dozens of fans placed flowers to pay their respects.”In our minds we believe that these icons are eternal,” said Marie Arnold, laying white flowers with her sister Michele.”It’s a part of our youth that is gone, it’s very sad.”

  • Syed Noor, Jannat Mirza face-off on responsibility for flop debut film

Syed Noor, Jannat Mirza face-off on responsibility for flop debut film

Social media star and TikToker Jannat Mirza is a social media sensation with 25.1 million TikTok followers and 5.8 million Instagram fans and recently appeared in the movie, Tere Bajrey Di Rakhi, directed by veteran director, Syed Noor.

Recently, Mirza appeared as a guest on ‘Ahmed Ali Butt’s podcast, Excuse Me’.
Host Ahmed Ali Butt asked her, “Syed Noor thought your followers would watch the film, but they didn’t. How do you feel about his statement, especially since you were part of his film?”

Jannat replied, “Well, I think the movie’s script was a little weak. Let me tell you, that movie was good; I did it with my parents’ permission; I’m not sure why he said that, and a successful film needs a modern script and story. Syed Noor is my uncle, and I respect him a lot. Also, I did the movie because I thought that I should try acting in films.”

“I thought they [the producers] were telling me a nice story, but it was actually something else. I didn’t do my homework because it was my first time, and the Canadian male lead also made his debut in this movie,” she explained, “I was let down after seeing it. I had no idea at the time that I should read the script before shooting a movie.”

Talking about her debut, Jannat Mirza confessed,

“I understand that people don’t always come for great stories, and that sometimes Shahrukh Khan’s films fall flat. I also realize that my fans didn’t show up. Many of our well-known actors perform badly; the script is everything.”

The director of the film, Syed Noor also had a lot to say. He recently gave an interview to Ambreen Fatima on her Youtube channel. Talking about the experience of working with Jannat Mirza,
Noor said, “Jannat is a very educated girl; she comes from a very learned and well-off family. She was an accomplished Tiktoker and didn’t feel affected by the film’s failure because she didn’t have the desire to be a movie star. I added her in the film because I like her and we get along well with her family. We didn’t force her to dress provocatively or imagine scary scenarios. We signed her because we wanted her fans to see the movie, but Humayun Saeed was correct, not many people showed up.”

Noor added that he felt that Mirza’s fan didn’t show up because they had to pay to watch the movie. “It happened because Tiktok content is typically viewed for free. Jannat had previously experienced great success in her life, and her fans were receiving free content from her.”
