Newlywed woman killed by minor nephew, not while making TikTok

New revelations are coming up in the news that emerged three days ago of a newlywed woman killing herself accidentally while making a TikTok.

Police investigation suggests that Fatima Bibi from Jaranwalla, who was reported to have killed herself while filming a TikTok with a gun in her hand, was actually shot dead by her nephew who was playing with a gun in the same room.

BBC Urdu’s Turhab Asghar investigated the case and unravelled police findings.

Despite the initial impression of the incident given by Fatima’s family, the police investigated it because it claimed that the nature of the incident was somewhat different and it is not as simple as described by the family.

The paternal uncle of 22-year-old Fatima Abbas, Ishitaq Ahmed told BBC News, “It was nothing short of doomsday at our home, we sent the girl off two days ago and her funeral was held two days later.”

However, he did mention that when the incident happened, the victim, her mother, sister and children were in the same room. “She took out a pistol from the drawer and started making a video and suddenly a bullet went off.”

On the question of where the pistol came from, Ishtiaq said that it belonged to her husband’s friend and he brought it to shoot in the air during the wedding celebrations.

Moreover, Ishtiaq Ahmed blamed TikTok for Fatima’s death, pointing out that the young generation is totally consumed by it.

He was still not able to provide any information about Fatima’s TikTok account.

    How did the police investigate?

BBC Urdu contacted Faisalabad police to get information. They were told that as the statements of the girl’s family and in-laws match so they are investigating the matter.

Just a day after that, Central Police Officer Faisalabad Kamran Adil after having investigated the case, said that “This is not a suicide. In this incident, the deceased didn’t fire the gun herself but she was hit by a bullet fired by her 10-year-old nephew.”

This is a one of its kind case in which there was no complainant and we have solved this case for the sake of public interest at large. The parents, husband, and in-laws blamed Fatima and TikTok for her murder and showed it to be a suicide.”

Jaranwala Superintendant Police Zia-ul-Haq told BBC that when the police officers arrived on the spot they saw that Fatima had fallen inside the room after the bullet hit her.

“I went closer and saw that there was a bullet between her head and ear,” SP Zia says.

“We asked the people present at the scene what had happened, and the girl’s mother said that we had just come here. I was sitting on the bed with her and my other daughter was also with her, while Fatima was making a Tik Tok with the pistol and suddenly the bullet hit her and she died on the spot.”

Even though, the other witnesses said the same, the police team present at the scene started searching for the pistol used in the incident, but they did not find any pistol there.
“As we searched the crime scene carefully we found a bullet casing.”

The police team also asked about Fatima’s phone to which they were told that it was broken and become dysfunctional now.

“We asked where is the mobile on which Fatima was making the TikTok? At first, they said that the mobile had fallen down and broken and now its screen panel cannot be opened, but when we took the mobile from them, it looked as if it had been smashed under their feet,” SP Jaraanwalla said.

The family was also asked about Fatima’s TikTok account to which the police was informed that she did not have an account.

The police became more suspicious when they noticed the crime scene being tampered. They rejected the idea of the victim’s autopsy.

However, after convincing them for the autopsy, the forensic team also collected evidence as they had doubts because “The bullet was fired from a close range but the angle was not such that it could be said that it was suicide,” the SP stressed.

After an intrusive search, the police team found out that the victim was neither making a TikTok video nor was she a victim of her own bullet, but the bullet was fired by the victim’s ten-year-old nephew.

“We expanded the scope of the investigation and recorded the statements of all the family members separately, which turned out to be contradicting each other.

As the evidence came to light, BBC Urdu talked to the family and they said after the accident happened, we were “scared” to tell this to the police.

Because of this lie the police decided to take up the matter legally after which they registered a murder case, becoming a complainant.

Additionally, the police have taken the ten-year-old boy who fired the shot into custody and is conducting further investigations into the case to see if anyone is involved with this child and the final report will be released in a few days.

Five Rugby players on trial in France over rape charges

Five rugby players, formerly with French side Grenoble, are facing trial for raping or failing to protect a student from alleged sexual assault in a hotel in 2017.

The trial in the southwestern French city of Bordeaux was to begin in June but was delayed after one of the defendants, Irish national Dennis Coulson, was seriously injured in a traffic accident.

One of his lawyers said that Dennis Coulson was still quite weak but would appear in court. The 30-year-old former prop is accused of gang rape, as are New Zealander Rory Grice, 34, and Frenchman Loic James, 30.

Farrell and Hayes are accused of failing to prevent the crime. The presiding judge barred media from covering the proceedings at the request of the alleged victim’s lawyers.

One of the victim’s lawyers said she was terrified of facing her attackers and repeating the whole ordeal.

In March 2017, the student, identified only as V, left a hotel on the outskirts of Bordeaux in tears where the Grenoble team had spent the night after losing a top-14 match to local team Bordeaux Beagles.

The then-20-year-old filed a police complaint, saying, “I met the players in a bar with two friends and went with them to a nightclub where there was plenty to drink. I did not remember how I got from the club to the hotel. When I woke up, I was naked on a bed with something inserted into my private parts. I saw two men in the room, naked and one fully clothed.”

Coulson, James and Grice said, “We had sexual relations with V, but the relationship was consensual, and the student-initiated it.”

Dreyfus-Schmidt said, “The girl may not have wanted what happened, but her behaviour did not make the boys, or at least my client, feel that she did not consent. When you go to a nightclub and drink too much, that means having relations with boys.”

V’s lawyer Anne Cadiot-Feidt argued that the players acted “like thugs.” In court, Gros added, “It’s plain to see that she was in no state to give her consent as these men who carried her, who were with her, know perfectly well.”

Based on statements and a sex tape, investigators found incidents of fellatio and object insertion. A toxicology report showed her blood alcohol level was dangerously high, between 2.2 and 3 grams. CCTV footage showed her struggling to stand and being helped by a player.

Cadiot-Feidt dismissed the players’ version, saying her client shouldn’t be expected to be perfect all the time. While V chose to drink, it didn’t give anyone the right “to do whatever they wanted with her body.” The lawyer said the players had a duty to protect her, not exploit her state of weakness.

The three main defendants left Grenoble in 2017 after the accusations to continue their careers elsewhere.

Rape accusations have recently rocked international rugby. The French trial is happening just before an Argentine judge decides whether to drop charges against two French rugby players accused of raping a woman in Argentina. Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, both 21, were held in Argentina after the alleged assault in July.

Last month, a Fijian player at the French club Dax received a one-year suspended prison sentence for sexual assault and violence during a night of heavy drinking.

FACT CHECK: Cube video from Saudi entertainment event sparks outrage for ‘depicting Kaaba’

A viral video from an entertainment event in Saudi Arabia has sparked outrage as social media users claim that a cube at the event was “used to depict the Holy Kaaba”.

As per the details, the video recorded at Riyadh Season 2023 – an annual winter entertainment event that hosts performers from around the world – showed behind the stage a cube-shaped structure with bright lights and visuals while dancers performed in front of it.
The clip caused a stir among netizens, who called it a “mockery of Islam’s holiest site”.

“Saudi Disgraced Islam. This is the opening of Riyadh’s entertainment season in Saudi Arabia this year. They had a model of the Holy Kaaba where they displayed images of singers and dancers [sic],” a user, namely Ryan Rozbiani, wrote in a post on X, which got 5.5 million views.

“Saudi Arabia has desecrated the image of the Kaaba. What happened to all Muslim zealots around the world? Or can they only be weaponized against Israel’s enemies and NATO’s enemies?” wrote another user in a post that received 198K views.

The Anti-Rumor Authority of the Kingdom, however, rubbished all claims. It said that the video being shared online was from Riyadh Season’s boxing event last year when four screens were extended from the ceiling for visual effects.

“There are no models or replicas of the Kaaba in the Kingdom. The cube-like structure was four mirrors attached to the ceiling with images digitally processed to appear on them,” it said.

Other video from the event also confirmed that the screens had actually been extended from the ceiling and lowered during the opening ceremony of the event, projecting different visuals behind the performers for an immersive experience.

14 dead in Astore wedding bus crash, bride survives

A bus carrying guests home from a wedding plunged into a river in the northern city of  Pakistan, Astore, killing at least 14 people, officials said Wednesday, with the bride so far the only known survivor.

“There were 25 people on the bus and so far 14 dead bodies have been recovered while 10 are still missing,” said Wazir Asad Ali, a rescue official in Gilgit-Baltistan.

“The bride is out of danger, and she is being treated in a Gilgit hospital,” Ali added.

Naik Alam, a senior police official from the area, told AFP the driver appeared to have been speeding when he lost control at a curve.

The groom’s family had travelled from Punjab, more than 500 kilometres (300 miles) away, for the wedding and were returning home when the accident happened.

Road accidents with high fatalities are common in Pakistan, where safety measures are lax, driver training is poor, and transport infrastructure is often decrepit.

In Balochistan in August, 12 men died when their bus crashed into a ravine on the Makran Coastal Highway.

In another accident that month, 24 people on board a bus were killed when it plunged into a ravine near the town of Azad Pattan on the border between Punjab province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Block pornographic and blasphemous content, ministry urges PTA

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has been urged to block and restrict public access to pornographic, blasphemous and other harmful online content.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs, in an official communique to the top telecom regulator, showed concerns that Pakistan is becoming “one of the leading countries in terms of viewing pornographic content, which is highly alarming, especially in light of its negative impact on public morality and the well-being of our society”.

“Despite the proactive measures taken by the PTA to block such content in line with the Supreme Court orders issued in January 2016, May 2016, and March 2018, it has been observed that pornographic and blasphemous material is still readily accessible on multiple online platforms.”

The ministry acknowledged the PTA’s efforts to curb this issue by blocking the accessibility of such content, but noted with concerns that such material “is still online accessible that violates our cultural and religious values”.

The letter further states that the widespread availability of such content undermines efforts to protect citizens, particularly young people, from exposure to harmful material.

It also raises concerns regarding the adherence to the directives of the top court and the authority’s ability to enforce content regulations effectively.

Constitutional bench set to begin hearings on Nov 14

The recently established constitutional bench will begin hearing cases on November 14 and 15 based on a first in and first out, the Supreme Court of Pakistan announced on Tuesday.

Earlier, the appellate court formed a three-judge committee to fix cases, issue court rosters, form benches, and decide weekly caseload for its recently established constitutional bench.

Justice Aminud Din Khan, the head of the constitutional bench, chaired the committee on Tuesday which was attended by Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail and Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar telephonically from Karachi.

According to a press release issued by the SC, the purpose of the meeting was to discuss matters for the formation of the constitutional bench.

The court’s registrar’s office briefed the committee members about the pending constitutional cases. The committee resolved that priority would be accorded to the oldest cases.

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), in its first session on November 5, had picked Justice Amin as head of the constitutional bench by a seven-to-five majority.

A seven-member constitutional bench comprised Justices Aminud Din Khan, Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Ayesha A. Malik, Hassan Azhar Rizvi, Musarrat Hilali and Naeem Akhtar Afghan. Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi reconstituted the JCP.

  • Indian CEO offers X user a job after liking his suggestions

Indian CEO offers X user a job after liking his suggestions

Indian food delivery app Zomato’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Deepinder Goyal, whose app is now synonymous with food itself in India, recently shared updates on some of the new features in the app on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

The updates were in continuation of the new feature update called ‘Food Rescue’, announced by Goyal on November 10 earlier this month. While many of his followers shared their opinions about the update, one user’s review, in particular, caught the eye of the Indian billionaire.

The new feature attempts to reduce food wastage by redirecting cancelled orders on Zomato to other potential customers.

Goyal, while shedding light on the feature, wrote, “Canceled orders will now pop up for nearby customers, who can grab them at an unbeatable price, in their original untampered packaging, and receive them in just minutes.”

An X user by the name of Bhanu shared some positive critique to prevent misuse of the new feature:

    1. Should not be applicable to COD (Cash on Delivery)
    2. Cancellation should not be allowed if the delivery reaches 500 m to the delivery point
    3. Chances of twi idiots sharing meals ordering and cancelling at the same time getting a discount place
    4. Less than two cancellations are allowed per month.

These pointers impressed CEO Goyal and he offered Bhanu to “work together” with him.

Goyal wrote, “All this and more already in place. Good thinking, by the way. Who are you and what do you do? Would love to know you more, and see if we can work together? 🙂 DM [Direct Message] me please if you wanna chat more.”

However, Bhanu seemed to be happy in his workplace as he responded to the offer to work for the food delivery company by respectfully sharing that he is based in Bangalore and is working already. “Thanks a lot. I am from Bangalore. Regularly use Blinkit. I regularly give suggestions to improve services via Twitter by tagging your company. Always thinking to reduce negative impact and improve service delivery. Working as a PM in a startup company.”

The interaction caused a flare of surprise among Indian users and made it to the headlines for news outlets around the globe, especially in India.
