Osman Khalid Butt roasts misogynistic expectations after controversial Jama Taqseem scene

Actor and writer Osman Khalid Butt has once again used wit and satire to challenge patriarchal norms, this time in response to a controversial tweet that circulated on X (formerly Twitter), following a scene from the most-talked drama Jama Taqseem.

The now-viral scene features Qais (played by Talha Chahour) asking his wife Laila (Mawra Hocane) to manage his daily essentials including socks, shoes, belt, and underwear because that’s how he was “raised” by his mother and family. The moment sparked widespread debate, prompting one netizen to share a list of “qualities” a woman must possess to be considered marriage material.

The list read: “Never marry a girl who:

                 Doesn’t make breakfast for you

                 Can’t organize your daily essentials

Leaves your shoes and socks dirty

Doesn’t know how to tie a tie

                 Lacks basic domestic skills

                 Doesn’t respect traditional household roles”

Osman Khalid Butt, known for his sharp commentary and progressive views, responded with biting sarcasm, mocking the regressive checklist with his own exaggerated and hilarious “26-point guide” for what some men apparently expect from a wife.

“This list is weak. Allow me to expand,” he began, before launching into a satirical tirade that highlighted the absurdity of such expectations. His list included gems like: “Won’t whisper Masha’Allah my big strong boy I’m sure your daddy loves you every time you breathe.”

“Refuses to hand-wash your fragile masculinity in washing powder Nirma. Once said ‘therapy’ instead of ‘dua. Can’t make roti that heals your generational trauma. Doesn’t fold your emotional baggage & Oedipus complex neatly.”

Butt’s satire struck a chord across social media, with many applauding his ability to expose the underlying misogyny that often goes unchecked in desi households and media.

His post quickly went viral, with users praising the actor for calling out problematic gender roles with humor and insight.

Osman Khalid Butt has long used his platform to advocate for gender equality, mental health awareness, and the importance of progressive storytelling in Pakistani media.

The drama is winning hearts by showing the bitter realities of life and the writer has very aggressively handled the writing with some very harsh lessons taught in previous episodes.

Nonetheless, every now and then, people raise questions pertaining to their relationship status. On a recent post by Maya, an Instagram user commented, “Is she still married with Osman Khalid Butt? Never seen them together.”

To this, Maya replied, “Did I, my family or Osman or his family ever mention this thing anywhere? You have a right to ask a question but please don’t give any statements about anyone…Thank you.”

Osman Khalid Butt hits out at trolls for calling him ‘bika hua’, slams Feroze Khan amidst controversy

Actor Osman Khalid Butt is always advocating for relevant topics, especially women rights and misogyny. The Baaji star came under scrutiny post his performance at LSA’22, where alleged domestic abuser Feroze Khan was awarded in the Best Actor category.

I could not attend LSA If Feroze was there' says Osman Khalid Butt

After his performance, he received a hefty amount of criticism for ‘siding with abusers’ about which, he has released a statement today that clears the air about his stance. He stated that he was contacted more than a week before the ceremony to perform and co-host a segment. At that time, nominations weren’t announced.

‘My only reservation, which I made clear before agreeing was that I could not attend, let alone perform at the ceremony if Feroze was present there (which has nothing to do with his acting prowess, and everything to do with the very serious allegations levied by his ex-wife), and I was assured that he would not. That commitment was honored.” He wrote.

He further elaborated that he got his hosting segment freed of ‘controversial nominations’.

‘I will continue to raise my voice: feminism is not a brand I wear, it is ingrained in my very being.’ He concluded.

Earlier this year Osman clapped back to an age-shaming troll on his Instagram handle. The netizen took a dig at the Chupke Chupke star by stating that he has started to look like an “uncle.”

The Diyar-e-Dil hero replied by saying, “Catching up to you, aren’t I?”.

Last year, Butt shared a comment by Zahid Ahmed in which the latter said that Pakistani television is okay with showing violence but not intimacy, Butt received a message from a social media user who alleged that the actors use this as a “pathetic excuse to get physical with female actors”.

“We can slap women on TV but can’t show intimacy,” Zahid had said in a recent interview. Osman shared his colleague’s statement with the caption: “Strange indeed.”

Replying to Butt’s story, an Instagram user messaged: “Just a pathetic excuse to get physical with female actors. Not to mention the influence it has on society and especially on young children and teens.”

Instead of ignoring the comment, Osman decided to school the troll explaining that “intimacy is just not sex”.

“Yeah so reactions like this are wholly predictable,” said Butt.

Elaborating further, the actor said: “First off: intimacy is not just sex. Secondly, I’d rather my child see a healthy intimate relationship between fictional spouses than, you know, physical abuse being normalized.”

“The nerve to talk about ‘influence’,” he concluded.

In a separate interview, while sharing where the desire to speak about women-related issues comes from Butt said: “Artists have a responsibility [to speak out] because art is very socially relevant, and I think good art creates empathy and empathy is required to bring [social] change.”

  • After Federal gave it the go-ahead, Punjab govt bans Joyland one day before release

After Federal gave it the go-ahead, Punjab govt bans Joyland one day before release

The government of Pakistan banned Saim Sadiq’s Oscar contender “Joyland” for containing “highly objectionable” material, earlier this month.

Joyland, which won big at Cannes, blocked from Pakistan release by censors | Arab News PK

An order dated Nov. 11 from Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting says that the country’s censor board had granted a censor certificate to the film on Aug. 17. But it has since reversed the decision.

“Written complaints were received that the film contains highly objectionable material which do not conform with the social values and moral standards of our society and is clearly repugnant to the norms of ‘decency and morality’ as laid down in Section 9 of the Motion Picture Ordinance, 1979,” the order states. “Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 9(2) (a) of the said Ordinance and after conducting a comprehensive inquiry, the Federal Government declares the feature film titled ‘Joyland’ as an uncertified film for the whole of Pakistan in the cinemas which fall under the jurisdiction of CBFC with immediate effect.”

Head of Prime Minister of Pakistan’s Strategic Reforms, Salman Sufi publicly requested the current federal minister of Information & Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb to review the ban and meet the film’s team.

Sufi later revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a committee to assess Joyland and review its ban.

    Latest Update (Ban Reversed)

Joyland movie review: Beautifully told tale of soul-crushing patriarchy and LGBTphobia in Lahore-Entertainment News , Firstpost

The globally acclaimed and multiple award-winning Pakistani film Joyland has been given green signal by the censor board of Pakistan after reviewing it on the Prime Minister’s directions.

The full board has allowed the local screening of Joyland after deleting some parts. The film was initially set to have a commercial release in Pakistan on November 18.

PM Shehbaz Sharif formed a cabinet committee to look into the matter after some schools of thought had objected to the movie.

    Release Stopped By Punjab Government

Following yesterday’s clearance by the censor board, Joyland’s theatrical release has once again been halted, this time by the government of Punjab.

The Government of Punjab has retracted its No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued to the movie Joyland. The notification issued by Information and Culture Department reads that Punjab government, in the wake of complaints, has decided to ‘recall’ the movie by “exercising powers conferred under Section-9 (1 and 2) Motion Pictures Ordinance, 1979.”
“You are therefore directed not to exhibit above titled film in the jurisdiction of Punjab province till further orders of the Govt,” reads the notification.

    Reactions On The Ban

Saim and his team members raised their voices against the ban imposed by the government. Terming the ban a “grave injustice,” Sadiq, in an Instagram post, says that the ban is “absolutely unconstitutional and illegal” and has urged the country’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to review the decision.

Apart from the film’s team, A-list celebrities and media personalities also reacted to the news and expressed their support for the film.

Set in Lahore, the film revolves around Haider, the youngest son of the middle-class, patriarchal Rana family. As the Ranas yearn for the birth of a baby boy, Haider secretly joins an erotic dance theater and finds himself falling for a fiercely ambitious trans starlet. Their love story illuminates the secrets and desires of the entire Rana family.

The film debuted at the Un Certain Regard strand at Cannes earlier this year, where it won the jury prize. Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai later joined the project as an executive producer. It is Pakistan’s entry in the Oscars’ international feature category.

Recently it also won the Asia Pacific Screen Awards’ young cinema award, given in partnership with critics’ association NETPAC and the Griffith Film School.

After hearing of the ban, APSA said in a written statement: “ ‘Joyland’ represents a significant new cinematic talent in Saim Sadiq from Pakistan, who has crafted a moving and entertaining drama about family in his debut feature film. The Young Cinema Award Jury commends Saim Sadiq for his brave and joyous celebration of community diversity and the universality of love.”
