    X will be restored whenever government signals, says PTA chairman

    Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rehman, stated that social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which is currently banned on government request, will be restored only if the government authorises so.

    Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rehman reaffirmed that there have been no cyber attacks on telecom infrastructure in the past two years. He stated that the PTA engages platforms on complaints related to social media content violating Pakistani laws and can block social media platforms upon government directive. He noted TikTok’s prompt response to complaints compared to X (formerly Twitter), which acts on only seven per cent of reported violations.

    Responding to Senator Abdul Qadir’s query about unblocking X, Chairman PTA reiterated that the decision rests with the government. He also discussed the licensing process for IoT technology, revealing recent initiatives.

    Federal Minister of Law and Justice Nazir Tarar expressed concerns over posts on social media platforms that could provoke religious sentiments, emphasizing that protests often follow such incidents. He differentiated government actions on YouTube and TikTok from those on X, highlighting differing approaches.

    Chairman PTA addressed VPN usage in Pakistan, acknowledging a significant decline in X users (70%) due to VPN restrictions. He mentioned plans to whitelist specific VPNs for legitimate use in Pakistan.

    Chairman PTA also highlighted the tax burden on telecom users in Pakistan (34.50%), comparing it with rates in neighboring countries like Sri Lanka (20-40%), Bangladesh (21-33%), India (18.5%), and Nepal (26%).

    Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Punjab leadership has expressed concerns against the federal and provincial governments in a meeting with Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

    PPP Punjab leaders stated after a huddle that provincial and federal governments are not cooperating with the party and that it is not getting its rights.
    Ticket holders told Zardari that the issues of their constituencies are not being solved.

    “We also received votes, and the people of our constituencies have to be satisfied,” the leaders told the President who remarked that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) cannot run the government.

    “Now I have returned to the ground myself, and uplift works will be carried out from Islamabad to Lahore. No political party can compete with the PPP,” Asif Zardari remarked.

    Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Nawaz Sharif has decided to restart political activities after the holy month of Muharram. Party insiders confirmed that the former Prime Minister is set to travel across the country to strengthen his political presence.

    Sharif will initially visit multiple districts in Punjab to mobilize the party at the district level and revive the party at grassroot level to support it in upcoming political challenges.

    NAB’s existence will keep country paralyzed, says Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

    Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said that the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) continued existence will keep the country immobilized.

    The former leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) told journalists that the government had promised to end NAB after coming into power, but they have empowered it with an ordinance.

    “Javed Iqbal (former NAB chief) was saying that the PTI’s founder has been behind NAB cases, while PTI founder’s partymen are saying Qamar Bajwa was registering cases,” Khaqan Abbasi said.

    Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Javed Latif has demanded a commission to probe recent and 2018 elections, urging the government to hold new polls in the country, Geo News reported on Monday.

    During the Geo New programme, “Naya Pakistan”, Javed Latif said that the current government came into power through an arrangement to block the way of Nawaz Sharif’s two-third majority.

    The PML-N leader raised questions on the no-confidence motion, alleging that those who don’t want stability in the country create an atmosphere to reduce Nawaz Sharif’s popularity and boost the reputation of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
     
    In doing all this, Gen (r) Qamar Javed Bajwa and former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Faiz Hameed were on the same page, Latif blamed.

    Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Ali Haider Gillani has said on Sunday that the Shehbaz Sharif-led federal government accepted all the demands of his party related to development funds and shares in governmental committees in Punjab.

    The young MPA confirmed that the government will give development funds to the PPP and obliged his party by giving it key administrative positions.

    Earlier, the PPP has asked the government for development fund allocation and party’s representation in administrative committees including market committees, zakat committees and Baitul Maal committees.

    The negotiating committees of both parties met in the federal capital on Sunday. Raja Parvez Ashraf, Ali Haider Gilani and Hassan Murtaza were representing PPP while Malik Ahmed Khan, Rana Sanaullah, and Khawaja Saad Rafique joined the huddle from the PML-N side.

    Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) central Punjab’s General Secretary Hassan Mutaza said on Friday that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is in power due to the support of his party, adding that 45 PPP MNAs are the government’s lifeline.

    In a video statement, the PPP leader addressed Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif: “If it were not for the PPP, you wouldn’t have been in the Prime Minister’s House; rather, you would have been in Adiala jail.”

    By minusing PPP, all of PML-N will land in jail, Murtaza said.

    Earlier, PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi said in an interview that it is compulsory for PPP to be an ally of government, but not for his party.

    However, Hassan Murtaza said that Hanif Abbasi should stop doing politics of hate and urged people within the PML-N to discourage people like Hanif Abbasi.

    Former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Miftah Ismail has unveiled the launch date of his new party, Awam Pakistan (AP), confirming that former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will be the party’s first chairperson.

    The ex-finance minister told Geo News on the phone that the Awam Pakistan party will be launched next month, and Abbasi will lead it. A ceremony will be held on July 6 in Islamabad.

    Explaining the party’s manifesto, the senior politician said that the aim of Awam Pakistan is to change the entire governance system of the country as the party believe in democracy and people’s will, adding that multiple politicians are in contact with him to join the party.

    Several politicians, including former PML-N leaders Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan Abbasi, Javed Abbasi, Syed Zaeem Hussain Qadri, Rana Zahid Tauseef, Zahid Binnouri, and Sardar Anwar Soomro, will be part of the Awaam Pakistan party.

    PTI ready for talks or not – The puzzle no one can solve

    The story of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) holding talks with other stakeholders in power corridors has turned into a roller coaster with plenty of twists and turns.

    PTI senator Shibli Faraz, considered a close aide to party’s defacto head Imran Khan, said on April 28, 2024, that the party is always ready to talk but only with those who have real power, hinting towards the willingness to talk to the establishment.

    He then stated that the current atmosphere is not suitable for dialouge.

    A week after Shibli Faraz’s remarks, incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan told journalists at Adiala jail on May 4 that his party will only be ready to talk with its toughest opponent- the security establishment.

    Both these statements were enough to establish that PTI definitely did want dialogue, but only with the army.

    In contrast, PTI Chairman, Barrister Gohar Khan had said on April 2024 that his party is ready to talk with everyone, including political forces, adding that a committee had been formed to negotiate with other political parties on multiple issues.

    During a press conference held on April 29, Gohar said that PTI is not negotiating with anyone through the backdoor.

    However, on June 12, multiple media outlets reported that former Prime Minister Imran Khan is ready to talk with the government for the sake of the country’s development.

    Moreover, PTI decided to choose Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party’s chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai to negotiate with President Asif Ali Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) president Nawaz Sharif to reduce political tension in the country.

    Analysts say that either PTI has decided to include politicians in its sphere of powers that need to be talked to, or the security establishment did not agree to talking to PTI, leading the party back towards political powers.

    Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader Qamar Zaman Kaira has denied media reports that his party will join a coalition government, terming them “baseless.”

    Rumors about PPP joining the treasury benches emerged after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqbal’s meetings with Kaira and Chief Minister Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti.

    Kaira claimed while talking to Geo News that he met with Ahsan Iqbal and discussed his constituency’s developmental projects.

    “I did not discuss anything about joining the government with Ahsan Iqbal,” Kaira said.
