  • VIDEO: Police allegedly make siblings do sit-ups in front of a police vehicle

    The Lahore police on Thursday allegedly made a young boy and his sister do sit-ups in front of a police vehicle after they failed to provide their national identity cards to the police.

    Speaking to ARY News, the girl said that she was coming back with her brother on a motorcycle from a factory where they both work when police officials stopped them at a check post near Ghalib Market police station and asked them to show their CNICs.

    “The police officials forced us to perform sit-ups as we did not have the CNICs,”  she said, adding that the policemen were recording a video while they were doing sit-ups.

    Her brother said, “After inflicting corporal punishment to us in public, the police officials took us to the Ghalib Market police station where they subjected us to torture.”

    The boy alleged that his sister was physically searched by the male police officer at the police station.

    Meanwhile police officials have denied all allegations saying that the video shared on social media is fake and is aimed to “malign” the police.

    Further reports reveal that the Ghalib Market police station house officer (SHO) has said that “someone conspired to defame the police [in response to] an operation against the hotel mafia”.

    “No official from Ghalib Market police station was involved” in the incident, the SHO said, claiming that the “footage of the boy and girl was made on purpose near the police van”.

    The cop added that an investigation is underway and authorities would soon “reveal the facts”.

    The police have arrested Mian Kashif Zameer, the man who hosted Diriliş: Ertuğrul star Engin Altan Düzyatan throughout his Lahore for having a criminal record.

    As per reports, Zameer was allegedly booked in nearly eight cases pertaining to matters of fraud, betrayal of trust, car theft and robbery.

    Earlier it was reported that Zameer struck a deal worth one million dollars with the Turkish actor but paid only half of it.

    Zameer later denied the allegations of deal violation and has said that the media is spreading rumours.

    Police arrest bus driver for playing video game while driving on motorway

    A bus driver was caught on camera playing a video game while driving a fast-paced passenger carriage. The driver has been arrested by police and his license has been suspended.

    According to reports, a video did the rounds on social media a few days back wherein a bus driver was caught playing a video game as he drove the bus on the busy Karachi motorway.

    The video shows the driver driving at a considerably high speed on the motorway but his attention is being distracted by the video game. The Inspector-General of Motorway Police took notice of the incident after the video went viral and traced the alleged offender via technology.

    The police reportedly followed the driver, identified as Babar Khan, suspended his license and booked him on relevant charges.

    It was alleged that the driver risked not only the lives of the passengers on board but also of those on the road and showed criminal negligence as a deadly accident could have happened because of it.

    New Zealand Police introduce hijab to uniform

    New Zealand Police have introduced the hijab into their official uniform to encourage more Muslim women to join the force. The move is  aimed to create an “inclusive” service reflecting the country’s “diverse community”.

    According to reports, a new recruit, Constable Zeena Ali will be the first police officer to wear a hijab as part of her uniform.

    Besides New Zealand, London’s Metropolitan Police and Police Scotland also allow Muslims to wear the head covering.

    Constable Ali was the first to make the request and was even included in the development process.

    Ali was born in Fiji but moved to New Zealand in her childhood. Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, she said that she wanted to join the police force following the terror attack in Christchurch.

    “I realised more Muslim women were needed in the police to support people,” she told the publication.

    “It feels great to be able to go out and show the New Zealand Police hijab as part of my uniform,” she said. “I think that seeing it, more Muslim women will want to join as well.”

    22 wedding guests killed in DI Khan rickshaw accident

    Twenty-two wedding guests were killed when the rickshaw they were riding in fell into a canal in northwestern Pakistan, police said Wednesday at the end of a recovery mission.

    The three-wheeler was overloaded with 29 people when the accident happened on Monday, near the city of Dera Ismail Khan.

    “We have recovered 22 bodies which include 16 women and six children”, Muhammad Ramzan, a senior police official, told AFP.

    The victims were from the same extended family, and at least seven of them were from the same household, he added.

    Seven people were rescued.

    Bilal Muhammad Faizi, a spokesman for the local rescue agency, confirmed the death toll and said the last bodies were retrieved on Wednesday.

    Rickshaws are a common mode of transport across Pakistan, and accidents occur frequently.

    Pakistan has one of the world’s worst records for fatal traffic accidents, mostly blamed on poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.

    A policeman was reportedly arrested on Monday after a case was registered against him for allegedly raping a female dancer at a hotel in Lahore on gunpoint.

    According to a first information report (FIR) filed at the city’s Garden Town police station, the stage actress has alleged that a constable named Kabir hired her for a dance function and took her to a hotel where she was raped at gunpoint.

    Inspector General Police (IGP) Punjab Inam Ghani has taken notice of the incident and directed CCPO Lahore to submit a report in this regard.

    The IGP also ordered departmental and legal action.

    Journalist Adeel Raja on Wednesday claimed that the new chief of Lahore police, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Umar Sheikh, who has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons since his appointment last month, has been sent home on forced leave.

    While The Current’s sources corroborate the journalist’s claim as they say that the Lahore top cop was sent home after Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan expressed displeasure over a viral audio clip in which the CCPO purportedly hurled abuses at a woman, a leave application by Sheikh suggests otherwise.

    “It is submitted that I have to look after my ailing daughter admitted to hospital. Please allow me three days [of] casual leave from 21.10.2020 to 23.10.2020,” read the application, a copy of which is available with The Current.

    Sheikh further stated that during his leave, Lahore’s Operations Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Muhammad Ashfaq Khan will look after the charge of the post of CCPO in addition to his own duties.

    This was also endorsed by Punjab chief minister’s spokesperson in a tweet.

    Azhar Mashwani, while responding to Raja, claimed that CCPO will back after tending to his ailing daughter.

    Couple receives tiger cub after ordering kitten online

    A couple in France was shocked when they discovered that they received a tiger cub instead of the kitten they had ordered online.

    According to details, the couple had paid 6,000 euros (Rs 1,157,793) to buy a ‘Savannah cat’. The French couple said they were doubtful about the animal after taking care of it for a week. When they called the cops, the investigation resulted in a very strange revelation that the animal was a Sumatran tiger cub.

    The Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica) is a protected species of big cats and is forbidden for private ownership. The Savannah, on the other hand, can be kept as a pet. According to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), a tiger cannot even be transported without paperwork.

    After the case came to the light, the couple and nine other suspects were arrested for trafficking the protected species. Meanwhile, others involved in this incident are facing charges of being involved in organised crime.

    The cub is in good health and was handed over to the French Biodiversity Office.

    Motorway gang-rape suspect says he evaded arrest for a month by wearing mask on public transport

    The prime suspect of the Lahore-Sialkot motorway rape incident has revealed how he managed to hide from the police for almost a month before he was finally arrested on Monday evening, Geo reported.

    Last month, two robbers on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway had gang-raped a mother of two in front of her children in an area falling within the Gujjarpura police jurisdiction. The incident caused a countrywide outpouring of anger and brought sexual violence against women into national focus. Abid and Shafqat Ali alias Bagga — who is on judicial remand— are the main suspects in the case.

    According to police sources, Malhi said he spent a month travelling through various cities in Punjab using public transport while covering his face with a mask. 

    The suspect revealed that he had fled to Nankana Sahib after raping the woman, while his accomplice, Shafqat, escaped to Depalpur. 

    With the police on his trail, Malhi fled from Nankana Sahib to Bahawalpur, where he managed to evade the police once again and avoid recognition by wearing a mask over his face.

    “I travelled through various cities in public transport,” the suspect was quoted as saying.

    He was ultimately caught after he ran out of money and was forced to contact his wife. Abid was arrested from Faisalabad and is being shifted to Lahore, Hasnain Haider, a deputy superintendent (DSP) of the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), said.

    Abid, who was leading a gang of four, is also wanted to police in at least 10 other criminal cases registered at various police stations of Punjab.

    Teenage girl steals motorcycles after disguising as a boy

    Mauripur police in Karachi have arrested an 18-year-old girl who they claim stole motorcycles while disguised as a boy.

    The accused is a resident of Lyari and reportedly performs the sport of boxing. The accused used to steal bikes along with her two partners — 14-year-old ‘Chhotoo’ and 20-year-old Basit.

    While the girl is in the custody of women police, both her accomplices are on the run, reports said.

    The suspect has denied the charges and said that she did not steal any motorcycle. She said she had been involved in the case because someone else gave her a stolen vehicle and she got caught with it.

    While the police claimed that the three-member gang used to snatch or steal motorcycles of latest models, they are also searching for the dealers to whom the group sold the same.
