    COAS Gen Bajwa ‘takes notice’ of misbehaviour of army colonel’s wife towards police

    Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa has reportedly taken notice of the mistreatment of police personnel by a woman claiming to be the wife of an army colonel, a video of which went viral on social media on Wednesday night.

    According to journalist Gharidah Farooqi, Gen Bajwa has ordered “prompt disciplinary action” against the military officer.

    “[The case of the] video of a serving military officer’s wife misbehaving with police at a check post on Hazara Motorway. COAS Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa takes prompt notice. Immediate disciplinary action initiated against the officer concerned,” she tweeted while welcoming the army chief’s decision.

    It was also tweeted by Senator Rehman Malik of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

    “We must appreciate the prompt notice taken by Gen Qamar Javed Bajawa by ordering disciplinary action against the officer whose family misbehaved with the police,” he said, adding that the development spoke volumes of the army’s accountability system.

    On Wednesday night, a viral video showed a woman misbehaving with police officials at a check post on Hazara Motorway in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) after she was stopped for what netizens say were security reasons.

    Claiming to be a colonel’s wife, the woman seemed insulted as she launched verbal attacks against the cops who continued to calm her down. The woman was also seen maneuvering her car at the police personnel until finally driving off after removing the barricade.

    As ‘#ColonelKiBiwi’ trends on Twitter in Pakistan, a group of netizens has claimed that the woman’s husband, Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Farooq Khan, has also had a similar reaction to police officers conducting their job and doing a routine security check.

    While The Current has not yet been able to independently verify the claim, here’s a video of the woman’s alleged husband.

    Support is pouring in for the cops who were and are mistreated by those who think they are above the law, as people demand an end to the culture.

    A video, doing the rounds on social media, shows a group of policemen in Nashik city giving a heart-warming reception to a newlywed couple. Cops can be seen congratulating the newlyweds on a loudspeaker. Dressed in traditional wedding attire, the couple is standing in the balcony of their house looking down at the celebration.

    The policemen then play a song from a Bollywood movie as a group of policemen clap for the newlyweds.

    The couple even received a shoutout from the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

    Police arrest man for impersonating PM’s personal assistant

    The Rawat police arrested a man for impersonating the personal assistant of the prime minister on Saturday.

    As per reports, the police stopped a vehicle near Basali Chowk. Four men were travelling it. When the police interrogate them about who they were, one of the men introduced himself as the personal assistant of the PM.

    When the police asked them for their identity cards, they refused to give their refused CNICs The prime suspect even threatened to get the police officers suspended.

    The suspects have been identified as Jahanzeb Khan, Muhammad Owais, Sharjeel Muhammad and Malik Khawar.

    Coronavirus lockdown: No crime reported in Rawalpindi since March 24

    No crime has been reported in Rawalpindi since the imposition of coronavirus lockdown on March 24, a report quoted police as saying.

    “The reason behind crime dropping to zero is that criminals fear the virus and also don’t want to put themselves at risk while numerous personnel of law enforcement agencies patrol the city,” police said.

    Saddar Division SP Rai Mazhar Iqbal said the crime rate, however, had started to decline before the lockdown was put in place. “Before the lockdown, the crime rate had already reduced by 70% to 80%,” he said, adding that the remaining 20% to 25% was taken care of by the lockdown.

    It merits a mention that Punjab remains the worst-affected by the new coronavirus — COVID-19 — as the number of confirmed cases on Tuesday reached 2,004.

    Sindh is trailing far behind with 986 cases, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) with 500 cases.

    Infections in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK)/Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Balochistan and Islamabad for now stand at 229, 202 and 83, respectively.

    As many as 55 coronavirus deaths and 429 recoveries had been reported in Pakistan by the time this report was filed.

    A man was caught on Sunday for taking money from residents and distributing fake Coronavirus Relief Fund forms in return in Pakpattan.

    According to the police, the suspect, identified as Raheel Babar, was recently fired from his job as a police constable. He confessed to his crime in police custody.

    “Babar had brought a fake police uniform from Sahiwal after which he came here and fooled residents into filling these fake forms,” the police deputy superintendent said.

    Babar charged Rs300 for each form. The police detained identity cards from him as well.

    A case has been filed against him. The DSP added that strict action will be taken against him.

    Omar Shahid Hamid’s best-selling debut novel The Prisoner is coming to Netflix, though it’s unclear whether as a movie or a series.

    In an exclusive interview with The Current, when asked when his novel is being made into a movie, the officer responded, “Its production is underway and it is hoped that a deal will soon be made with Netflix or some streaming service.”

    “And most likely, we’ll start shooting it in summers. So…fingers crossed,” he added.

    Inspired by his experiences in the police service, Omar penned the novel, while on a sabbatical. The book is centred around an American journalist who is kidnapped.

    A brief synopsis of the novel reads: “On an unusually cold December evening in Karachi, American journalist Jon Friedland is kidnapped from one of the city’s poshest neighbourhoods. His captors plan to post a video of his execution on Christmas Day. The kidnapping has come at a bad time, embarrassing the Pakistani government in front of their US allies. The clock is ticking. Will the police and Intelligence Agencies recover Friedman alive?”

    “The story careens through the streets of Karachi, taking the reader into an all too real world of jihadis, corrupt police officers, and bloodthirsty political henchmen – all placed together in a city where no one is quite what they seem.”

    Hamid is also the author of The Spinner’s Tale (2015), The Party Worker (2017), and The Fix (2019).

    Sharp increase in street crimes reported in Lahore

    Lahore witnessed a sharp increase in street crime as more than three dozen cases of robbery and theft were reported during the last 24 hours in several parts of the city.

    According to the reports, five houses were robbed while 15 citizens were looted in incidents of street crime. Prime Minister Imran Khan’s nephew Shershah Khan was also among those looted during a house robbery.

    While the city witnessed a surge in crime during the last one month, crimes were gradually increasing with every passing day which is evident from the fact that the criminals deprived families and citizens of valuables in 36 hits for 24 hours or so.

    The Dolphin Squad, the Police Response Unit and other units of the city police took least interest in their responsibilities because of a lack of resources including proper vehicles for patrolling.

    According to the FIR registered by Shershah, three unidentified armed men broke into his house at 3 am by scaling the boundary walls. He said his wife and daughter were alone at that time. The suspects held his wife hostage, looted an expensive mobile phone, eight gold bangles, cash and a pistol worth over Rs1.1 million and escaped the scene.

    It was further stated in the FIR that the criminals also forced his wife to issue a cheque of Rs3 million.

    In another case, three armed men went into the residence of Waqar Ahmed and robbed the valuables amounting to Rs2.1m.

    Similarly, thieves unlocked the house of Rashid Mahmood in Qureshi Mohallah and took away jewellery, cash and other valuables worth over Rs2.2m.

    Many such incidents were reported in the areas of Ghaziabad, Shahdara, Lower Mall, Gujjarpura, Badami Bagh, Sabzazar, Nawab Town, Garden Town, Nishtar Colony, Nawankot, Sanda etc.

    Police to launch crime app, install alert button in Rawalpindi police stations

    Rawalpindi’s Regional Police Officer (RPO) Dr Sohail Habib Tajik has said that a crime App was being launched to facilitate citizens in registering complaints about any criminal activity, Dawn reported.

    According to the details, the RPO revealed this news while addressing a press conference at his office for the first time after assuming the charge.

    Dr Sohail also said that a “helper” button will also installed in police stations to facilitate citizens in registering complaints about any criminal activity in the city.

    In case of failing to get the police response, the complainant can press the helper button which will automatically forward an emergency call to all senior police officers. The button will generate a SOS message as soon as the complainant presses it.

    All senior officers, including the RPO, district and circle police officers, will receive the message at the same time, making it impossible for the police officials present at the police stations to ignore the complaint.

    The RPO said, “All available resources will be spent on the police force,” adding that he believe in transparency and want to get positive results by introducing community policing in the city.

    Dr Sohail also said that people were afraid of visiting police stations to lodge their complaints but the mobile app would help them approach the authorities without any fear.

    He further informed that a total of 400 police employees serving at residences and offices of police officers had been called back and posted to police stations to strengthen the police working more.

    RPO said that his top priority was to gain citizen’s confidence and to change public perception about police department.

    The Punjab police arrested four people, including a couple, for hacking into an ATM in Jhelum’s Dina.

    According to reports, the police were able to arrest the suspects with the help of CCTV camera footage. A case has also been filed.

    The hackers would use a skimming device to hack into the machine and record the data of people who came and used the ATM. Jhelum DPO Hamid Abid said the group put the device in the morning and took it out at night. He said “The Dina SHO searched for the group for several hours and then finally caught them red-handed when they came to remove the device at night.”

    The suspects are reportedly from Lahore.

    For the first time in history, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to hire female police commandos that are presently being trained to fight militancy in the province.

    As per reports, around 35 female police commandos are undergoing training at the Nowshera police training center. Officials have said that KP Inspector General Police Nasir Durrani felt that female police commandos should be included in the force and decided to give them special training.

    The same training will be given to female commandos that is imparted to elite force male members in the province and will be able to confront all kinds of challenges, including the fight against militants.

    More female commandos will be trained for KP police once the first batch joins the police.

    Talking to a news outlet Musarrat Bibi — a commando under training — said, “I wanted to join the group because I wanted to tell the world that women in K-P could also obtain commando training and fight terrorism.”
