Dhurandhar: Internet reacts to upcoming Bollywood movie on Operation Lyari

The teaser for the upcoming Bollywood film Dhurandhar has sparked backlash in both Pakistan and India as audiences were taken aback over the representation of Karachi’s Lyari and the portrayal of Pakistan within the plot. The film features Ranveer Singh as a RAW agent who infiltrates Pakistan for a covert mission, while Arjun Rampal plays a Pakistani intelligence official named Major Iqbal, a character depicted as dedicated to harming India.

    R. Madhavan portrays Ajay Sanyal, a role inspired by India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, who implies that Lyari plays a key role in militant activities and claims that it is crucial for Pakistan to be infiltrated to address threats. The trailer showcases sequences reminiscent of PPP rallies, images of the assassinated former Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and associated party flags, which fueled the online discourse.

The reaction is part of a larger conversation regarding recent Indian films focused on Pakistan.

Viewers also referred to other Bollywood films where Indian actors were cast as real-life Pakistani figures, such as Sanjay Dutt playing Karachi police officer Chaudhry Aslam and Akshaye Khanna portraying Lyari gang leader Rehman Dakait, roles that had already attracted criticism online.

The discussion surrounding Dhurandhar intensified after the trailer circulated online, with viewers questioning how Bollywood portrays Pakistan’s issues as narrative elements.

Users highlighted that the gang conflicts in Lyari stem from local rivalries and political affiliations within Karachi, without any connection to India.

One social media commenter questioned the film’s intent, saying, “Do Pakistanis genuinely not recognize what the Indian government and film industry are promoting? This trailer aims to instill negativity in our minds and still profit from us.”

Another user suggested that the cycle of reactions was uncalled for, stating, “This is just their way of releasing tension after Operation Tindoor. Let them produce the film, and watch it if you wish. Chill out and view it as entertainment. There’s no need to take any of this to heart.”

Concerns also emerged regarding Sanjay Dutt’s role. One user remarked, “How is this even permissible? How can Sanjay Dutt portray someone like Chaudhry Aslam? He was a national figure for us. Casting Dutt in that role feels disrespectful.”

Another reaction questioned the filmmakers’ perspective on Pakistan, stating, “Why is India making a movie on Pakistan’s internal gang war? Have the #Dhurandhar writer or director ever visited Pakistan? Let alone Lyari? Answer: No, but suna bahut hai.”

Scheduled for release in early December, Dhurandhar continues to spark conversations across various platforms as viewers react to the trailer’s depiction of Pakistan.

  • Amar Khan slams Indian trolls, backs Deepika Padukone amid vicious backlash

Amar Khan slams Indian trolls, backs Deepika Padukone amid vicious backlash

Pakistani actor Amar Khan has voiced her support for Indian star Deepika Padukone, who is facing intense trolling from hardline Hindutva elements from India.

The Bollywood superstar is being targeted for an advertisement she filmed alongside her husband, actor Ranveer Singh, that has snowballed into a social media storm. Padukone is seen wearing an Abaya and a Hijab in the ad as she admires the stunning architecture of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

Taking to Instagram stories, Amar replied to a sarcastic Tweet on X (formerly Twitter) which said: “An average ‘woke feminist’ when she actually doesn’t have a choice.”

“It isn’t a woke feminist! It’s a human from a country which has 1/3 Muslims, respecting all religions. Bravo Deepika, what a shame this current politics in India is stooping to,” she said this while referring to the toxic, hate-filled politics of the Narendra Modi-led government towards Muslims.

Critics have accused Deepika of hypocrisy, questioning how someone who advocates for women’s freedom could “submit” to religious customs. Many are referencing her “My Choice” campaign for Vogue India back in 2015, suggesting that wearing a Hijab contradicts her feminist stance.

But others are saying that the critics are missing one point and that is “choice”. On various religious occasions or visits, she wore traditional attire – Banarasi sarees, hand-woven fabrics, and elegant suits. Some said that if she can wear gowns at Cannes, she can wear “anything”.

One user wrote on X: “It’s a woman’s choice whether she wants to wear a bikini on the beach, a hijab in a mosque, or a lehenga with a choli at weddings. If you don’t understand this, then the problem is with you, not with women, and definitely not with Deepika Padukone. By the way, she looks so beautiful in a hijab.”

Deepika Padukone hasn’t commented on the issue as yet.

  • Indians troll Deepika Padukone for wearing hijab in advertisement

Indians troll Deepika Padukone for wearing hijab in advertisement

Indian bhakts keep on trolling anyone who dares to offend their sensibilities. Bollywood A-lister Deepika Padukone has found herself at the center of a trolling campaign for wearing a hijab while promoting Abu Dhabi tourism with her husband Ranveer Singh.

One Hindutva extremist user shared pictures of the advertisement and reminded her of her previous campaign: “Remember Deepika Padukone’s video ‘My Choice’? ‘To wear a Bindi or not, my choice. I decide the clothes I wear’. Now Deepika Padukone has made video promoting Abu Dhabi tourism wearing Hijab.”

He questioned: “What happened to ‘My Choice’?”

One user shared a picture of Indian actress and politician Smriti Irani from her Madinah visit standing in an Indian traditional saree and tillak, saying: “This is @smriti Irani in Madinah.”

“Choice has a price tag,” one troll wrote. Another agreed, saying: “For people like these MONEY is the only choice. Baaki sab bakwaas hai. India ki public ko sab bewakoof banate rehte hai. Isne bhi bana liya to kya hi naya kiya. (Rest is rubbish, everyone make fools out of Indian public. She has done the same, what’s new it?)”

One user lashed out at the actors, saying: “These actors are hypocrites and worse humans!”

However, many of her fans came to her defense.

A fan wrote: “What’s your problem sir, anyone can do anything as per their wish.”

“Bro, same logic, it’s her choice now too,” another added.

One user pointed out: “Because you cannot enter Sheikh Zayed mosque without a hijab.”

“ITS HER CHOICE,” one simply shut the debate.

“My Choice” is a Vogue India campaign that sparked debates on feminism in India, while the new advertisement shows her in modest attire, wearing a Hijab for Abu Dhabi tourism advertisement with Ranveer Singh.

Ranveer Singh addresses divorce rumors after deleting wedding picture

Ranveer Singh has dismissed rumors of divorce with his wife Deepika Padukone, just days after he removed their wedding photos from his Instagram account.
The Bollywood action star, who recently wiped out all posts on his Instagram before January 2023, including those with Padukone, addressed the resultant speculation during a fancy jewelry store’s opening in Mumbai. He showed everyone his favorite jewelry- his wedding and engagement rings.
“One of the rings that are very dear to me is this one it’s my wedding ring, presented to me by my wife. The other one is a platinum engagement ring,” he said while showing the jewellery pieces to the camera.
“And then there are my mother’s diamond earrings and my grandmother’s pearls,” he added. “These are my favorite pieces because they have a lot of personal and sentimental value to me.”

‘Spineless’: Twitter disgusted after Ranveer Singh pays tribute to Johnny Depp at film festival

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has been criticised on social media after a video of him praising controversial actor Johnny Depp went viral. The ‘Rocky And Rani’ actor was honoured with ‘The Red Sea: Honoree Award’, and in his acceptance speech the actor chose to praise Johnny by calling him his “screen idol.”

“I want to go off-script for a moment here. One of my screen idols is in the house, ladies and gentlemen, Mr Johnny Depp. My good sir, I’ve followed your work since Edward Scissorhands and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. What an honour to be receiving this in your presence. Thank you for everything that you’ve unknowingly taught me about the craft, sir. Master of transformation, versatility, something that inspired by you.”

Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard were embroiled in a public defamation case in 2022. The jury sided mostly with Depp, finding Heard guilty of defamation, penalising her for $10 million agile Depp was told to pay her $1 million.

X (formerly Twitter) users were outraged at Ranveer, mostly regarded as one of the non-toxic male leads in Bollywood, paying homage to a Depp.

“embarrassing..these celebs esp from bw don’t stand up for anything and when given a public platform they would commit atrocities like praising a straight up abuser. just accept ur award and leave like i am sure he doesn’t give a fuck. ranveer would ass-lick just abt anybody.”

“Powerful men side with each other and get hailed for low effort and unimpressive “acts of love”. Idealizing a rapist and abuser reflects a lot on you. It is easier to speak two lines praising your super rich and successful wife but hard to stand up for other women/survivors,” another user wrote.

  • Deepika finally responds to criticism of Koffee with Karan interview

Deepika continues to live her best life while living rent free in the minds of haters.

A few weeks back, Deepika and Ranveer raised eyebrows with their ‘Koffee With Karan’ interview where the two revealed they casually dated for a couple of months before getting engaged. The ‘Om Shanti Om’ actress recalled ending an abusive relationship not ready for a serious commitment. The two actors, therefore, kept seeing other people while dating each other. After the two got engaged, they decided to remain a monogamous couple.

Deepika became the target of sexist jokes, and claims that she cheated on Ranveer during their relationship. Now, during an interview with Vogue India, the actress has declared she is past the point of letting trolls dictate her opinions.

“When I feel really strongly or passionately about something, I don’t think twice about expressing myself. I’ve grown to become this person where I’m not afraid of speaking my truth or owning up to mistakes. I’m not afraid of saying sorry,” Deepika responded, as according to Mashable India.

While social media users had Deepika’s back to protect her from the naysayers, the industry did as well. Host of ‘Koffee With Karan’, Karan Johar, did a livestream where he addressed the criticism over Deepika’s comment, and shut down her critics.

“Do what you need to do because no one’s looking,” responded the celebrated director according to The Hindustan Times. “Trolling gets you nowhere. You are landing nowhere.”

  • Ranveer Singh reveals how he proposed to Deepika Padukone on Koffee With Karan

Ranveer Singh reveals how he proposed to Deepika Padukone on Koffee With Karan

Iconic Bollywood couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone were the first guests on Season 8 of Koffee With Karan, where the duo spilled secrets about their relationship. This marks the first time the two made an appearance together as a married couple on television.

Speaking about how they got engaged, Ranveer revealed he had proposed to Deepika back in 2015 by popping the question at a gorgeous location. The ‘Rocky and Rani’ actor said that after consulting his mother and sister, he purchased the ring that was “far above my means at the time.”

As reported by India Today, the actor and Deepika were set to leave for a vacation to Maldives. They were on a boat ride when Ranveer got down on one knee with the ring and proposed.

‘We go to the Maldives. And I’ve secretly carried the ring with me. We do the sandbank adventure. A boat takes us out in the middle of the sea and there’s just one tiny sliver of sand in the middle and all around is just infinite sea. They drop you there and put up a tent. It was literally just her and me in the middle of the sea. I was like, this is just perfect”

Ranveer recalled Deepika was overwhelmed with emotions because she was shocked, and said yes right away.

The couple further revealed that convincing Deepika’s parents was the hardest part of their journey. Deepika recalled that they met her at parents after returning from Maldives, and went directly to Padukone’s house in Bangalore. Ranveer said he had prepped everything to tell her family:

”We’re having this wonderful evening. I am trying to charm them. Then she whispered ‘I am going to tell them now’ and I was like ‘Don’t’ ”.

Deepika opened up how she blurted the news out during dinner, and her mother’s face “had just gone cold”, Ranveer mentioned.

”After all the hugs and celebrations, I’ve gone to my room and I put my ear to the door. Outside, Amma and Deepika are having it out. She’s (Deepika’s mother) saying ‘Who is this guy? He’s proposed marriage and you’ve said yes also?’ Is this any way?’ With my ear on the door, I was like ‘God save us’ ”.

But despite her initial concerns, Deepika said her mother truly loves Ranveer now.

“It took a lot of years and work on my part to make a place in Amma’s heart. It has happened. And I am one of Amma’s favourite people in the world.”

Perhaps what was even more wholesome about this entire interview was when the couple released a snippet of their wedding video during the episode. Watch and weep at your own risk.

  • Shah Rukh Khan not part of Don 3 for this reason

Shah Rukh Khan not part of Don 3 for this reason

Indian director and actor Farhan Akhtar has talked to Variety about the reason why the iconic action franchise ‘Don’ has rebooted with Ranveer Singh and not Shah Rukh Khan, who played the role in 2006 and 2011.

The announcement that Ranveer Singh will play the iconic villain was made in August, leaving audiences divided.

Now, Akhtar has revealed that he and King Khan had parted mutually after they couldn’t find any common ground on how the story is supposed to go forward.

“I’m not in the position of replacing anybody. These are things that we discussed over the years, I wanted to take a certain direction with the story, somehow we just couldn’t find common ground. We just parted mutually knowing that it’s probably for the best. So that’s where it is.”

The son of lyricist Javed Akhtar went on to express his excitement about Ranveer playing Don, and said the actor was charged up for the project.

“I’m really excited Ranveer’s on board. He’s so charged and so ready to go. It’s a big film, just purely from the point of view of an actor, it’s a big thing to do, and we’re really excited to have him on board. His energy is energizing us, so to speak.”

In a lengthy post on his Instagram account, Ranveer gushed about this being a childhood dream that he was selected to perform the role of the iconic villain, previously played by Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan.

“As a child I fell in love with the movies, and like the rest of us,” gushed the ‘Rocky and Rani ki prem kahani actor. “Watching and worshipping Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan – the two G.O.A.Ts of Hindi Cinema. I dreamed of growing up to be like them. They are the very reason I wanted to become an actor and a ‘hindi film hero’. Their impact and influence on my life cannot be overstated. They’ve shaped the person and actor that I am. Taking their legacy forward is a manifestation of my childhood dream.”
