Hande Erçel says she did not call Shah Rukh Khan ‘uncle’

Turkish actress Hande Erçel has denied reports claiming she referred to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan as “uncle” in an Instagram story, calling the viral post fake.

The clarification comes after Gulf News and several Indian media outlets published stories suggesting Erçel made the remark following a viral clip from the Joy Awards 2026 in Riyadh.

During the event, Erçel was seen filming her friend, Egyptian actress Amina Khalil, who appeared on stage alongside Shah Rukh Khan, leading to online speculation that the Turkish star was recording the Bollywood actor.

Soon after, a screenshot allegedly from Erçel’s Instagram story began circulating on social media, carrying the caption:

“Who is this uncle? I was just filming my friend @aminakalilofficial. I am not his fan!! Please stop spreading false information!!”

Erçel refuted the screenshot, stating it was fake, and shared the circulating post on her official X account around 12 hours ago, writing simply:

    “This is a lie.”

Her statement confirms that she did not post the alleged Instagram story and did not refer to Shah Rukh Khan as “uncle”.

Amid the growing buzz, a screenshot allegedly taken from Hande Erçel’s Instagram story surfaced, showing the same clip with a pointed remark directed at Shah Rukh Khan.

  • From Gujrat to NASA: Pakistani engineer lives out a real-life ‘SRK’s Swades’ story

From Gujrat to NASA: Pakistani engineer lives out a real-life ‘SRK’s Swades’ story

Nearly 24 years after he left the lanes of Karianwala, a modest village nestled in Pakistan’s Gujrat district, Yasir Tufail walked back through its narrow streets, not as the boy who once peered up at starry skies during power outages, but as a NASA Deputy Portfolio Manager.

His story is one of awe, struggle, and an enduring connection to home and it reads remarkably like the Bollywood classic Swades.

Tufail’s path from rural Pakistan to the frontlines of space exploration in the United States is the kind of real-life arc that feels like it belongs on the big screen. Like Shah Rukh Khan’s character in Swades, he built a life of success at NASA, contributing to some of the agency’s most high-profile missions, including the James Webb Space Telescope. But returning to his childhood school, the chalk-scratched walls and the eager eyes of local students reminded him that his journey began under the very skies that first sparked his curiosity.

“I remember as a child, during electricity cuts, we’d lie outside and watch the stars,” Tufail shared in a recent conversation with Arab News. “I once saw what I thought was a moving star. Later, I realized it was a satellite and that moment stayed with me.”

Born in Karianwala, Tufail left for the US with his family in 2001 when he was just 14. The transition from the quiet, open skies of Pakistan to the bustling, light-polluted streets of New York City was jarring. “It was a huge culture shock,” he recalled. “In New York, when I looked up, there was nothing, just a blank sky.”

But that emptiness above was soon filled with new dreams. A poster commemorating the Columbia space shuttle disaster where Indian-American astronaut Kalpana Chawla was among the crew lost, inspired him to learn more about space. That moment would define his future.

Driven by a growing passion, Tufail studied astronautical engineering at Capitol Technology University in Maryland. While still a student, he was handpicked to work on NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission — a nickname that earned him the affectionate title of “WISE guy” among friends.

From there, his career took flight.

After joining NASA full-time, he contributed to several key missions, including the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite, coincidentally, the same mission featured in Swades, where Shah Rukh Khan’s character worked at NASA. “The coincidence made me feel like life was imitating art,” he laughed.

But his defining project came later: the James Webb Space Telescope, humanity’s most advanced eye into the early universe. Tufail spent over seven years testing and integrating instruments for the telescope, which has since given the world its most breathtaking view of space. “To see those first images in 2022 and know I played a part and that’s something I’ll never forget,” he said.

Now a seasoned engineer managing portfolios that push the limits of space science, Tufail hasn’t forgotten where he came from. On a visit to Pakistan last year, he toured top universities like LUMS and NUST, telling students his story and encouraging them to pursue their passions with purpose.

“If you want to do something meaningful, you have to struggle for it,” he told a packed auditorium. “And that struggle only makes sense if you’re passionate.”

His story has already begun inspiring others, including his own family. His younger brother now works at NASA too, as a quality assurance engineer on the Dragonfly mission, which will explore Saturn’s largest moon, Titan. A family legacy, now, is taking shape in space science.

But Tufail’s dreams don’t stop here. He’s now working toward becoming an astronaut himself and training with a private pilot’s license and scuba diving certification, both prerequisites for astronaut candidacy.

“I still want to go to space,” he said. “You never know, maybe one day I will.”

The company has since grown into a full-fledged media powerhouse with verticals in film production, visual effects, content distribution and post-production services.

  • ‘Nearly 18 years after Om Shanti Om’: Shah Rukh, Deepika reunite for 6th film

‘Nearly 18 years after Om Shanti Om’: Shah Rukh, Deepika reunite for 6th film

Nearly 18 years after they first lit up the cinema screen together in Om Shanti Om, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone are set to reunite for their sixth film, a high-octane action-thriller titled King, directed by Siddharth Anand.

The announcement has sent waves of excitement across Bollywood and among fans around the world, as the duo’s on-screen chemistry has consistently been a winning formula at the box office.

Deepika confirmed the news via Instagram, sharing a behind-the-scenes glimpse with a touching message: “He taught me that the experience of making a movie, and the people you make it with, matter far more than its success.” The message was a tribute to Shah Rukh Khan, who played a key role in launching her career with their debut film together.

Directed by Siddharth Anand, known for helming major action hits like Pathaan and War, King is already one of the most anticipated projects of 2026. While details about the plot remain under wraps, reports suggest the film will feature Shah Rukh in a gritty, intense role unlike anything he’s done before. Deepika is expected to play a central character with strong emotional and action-driven arcs, adding yet another layer to their dynamic partnership on screen.

This marks the sixth collaboration between the two actors, whose previous films together include Om Shanti Om (2007), Chennai Express (2013), Happy New Year (2014), Pathaan (2023), and Jawan (2023)—the last of which featured Deepika in an extended cameo. Over the years, their pairing has become successful and fan-favorite.

King also marks a new chapter in Indian cinema’s growing trend of high-budget action thrillers with strong lead characters and global appeal. With Anand at the helm and two of the industry’s biggest stars leading the cast, expectations are sky-high.

According to IMDb, the film will mark the return of Rani Mukerji in a much-awaited comeback. Joining the roster are seasoned actors like Anil Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Arshad Warsi, and rising talents such as Raghav Juyal and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Notably, King will also feature Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan in what is expected to be her first major theatrical role following her debut in The Archies on OTT.

  • Fatima Bhutto slams Shah Rukh Khan for wishing Modi on his birthday but remaining silent on Gaza

Fatima Bhutto slams Shah Rukh Khan for wishing Modi on his birthday but remaining silent on Gaza

Pakistani writer and activist Fatima Bhutto has slammed Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan for his birthday message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling out his silence on the genocide in Gaza.

On the occasion of Indian Modi’s 75th birthday, Shah Rukh Khan appeared in a widely circulated video, extending wishes to the Indian leader. In the message, SRK said: “Today, on the occasion of PM Modi’s 75th birthday, I extend my best wishes to him. Your journey from a small city to the global stage has been very inspiring. Your discipline, hard work and dedication towards the country can be seen in this journey. Your energy at the age of 75 even beats young people like us. I pray that you always stay healthy and happy.”

However, the message sparked a sharp response from Fatima Bhutto, who took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice her disapproval. Sharing the video, she wrote: “SRK wishing Modi a happy birthday in this drippy manner when he hasn’t said a word about Gaza is so telling and so embarrassing.”

Bhutto, a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, has previously criticised global figures and institutions for complicity or inaction over Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

The timing of Shah Rukh Khan’s video also drew attention due to his appearance later that evening at the premiere of his son Aryan Khan’s directorial debut, The Ba**ds of Bollywood. The event was a high-profile affair, attended by the Khan family, including Gauri Khan, Suhana Khan, and AbRam Khan, along with numerous celebrities from the Indian film industry.

Meanwhile on the other side, several Hollywood stars are attending charity events for Palestine and have spoken up against the genocide in Gaza.

A major benefit concert titled Together for Palestine was held on Wednesday night at Wembley Arena in London, bringing together an impressive lineup of 69 artists, speakers, and activists in a unified call to end the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The event served as both a cultural showcase and a powerful political statement against the Israeli military assault on the Palestinian people.

Among the most prominent appearances was Benedict Cumberbatch, star of Marvel’s Doctor Strange, who emotionally recited a poem by the late Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish.

The concert took place as the Israeli genocide on Gaza nears its second year. According to international human rights organizations and media reports, Israel has dropped the equivalent of more than six atomic bombs on the densely populated Gaza Strip since the start of the campaign.

  • Shah Rukh Khan, Sharif family’s wealthy London neighbour faces criminal probe

Shah Rukh Khan, Sharif family’s wealthy London neighbour faces criminal probe

A serious criminal investigation has been launched in London against a billionaire landlord who owns Fountain House — a luxury apartment block located near the residences of Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan and Pakistan’s Sharif family.

Tarique Ghaffur , a former top official at Scotland Yard, has reportedly confirmed that he is privately investigating Asif Aziz, who owns Fountain House through his company, Parkgate Aspen. This exclusive property is situated on Park Lane, close to the Dorchester Hotel, and contains around 80 high-end apartments.

Ghaffur stated, “We are collecting evidence for a criminal case related to Asif Aziz and his management company. The investigation began after several complaints from residents and based on the serious concerns raised, a criminal probe is now underway.”

Residents of Fountain House, many of whom are wealthy millionaires, have accused Aziz’s company of charging unfair service fees and failing to provide proper services. Some have already taken the matter to civil court.

Asif Aziz, who refers to himself as “Mr Mayfair” and “Mr West End,” is known for owning hundreds of luxury properties across London. He also runs a charity called the Aziz Foundation. However, his real estate practices have sparked controversy in the past.

He has been criticized by Private Eye for using offshore companies in the Isle of Man to secretly purchase properties in London and for converting community spaces, such as pubs, into upscale apartments.

In 2017, he told a court that his wife of 14 years was not legally married to him in an attempt to avoid sharing his £1.1 billion fortune. The couple later reached a settlement.

In 2020, The Times dubbed him “the meanest landlord in Britain” after his poor treatment of tenants during the pandemic.

In 2022, Novara Media criticized him again for buying nurseries and bars and converting them into luxury housing. Aziz later issued legal threats to the media outlet, calling the article defamatory.

In late 2024, his company Criterion Capital made headlines again when the iconic Prince Charles Cinema claimed that Aziz’s team was pressuring them to pay higher rent and had inserted an unfair break clause into their lease. More than 115,000 people signed a petition in support of the cinema.

This year, in 2025, further reports have emerged accusing Aziz’s housing brand “Dstrkt” of poor maintenance and vermin infestations, despite rising rents. He also allegedly paid £150,000 to settle charges related to running an unlicensed Forrest Gump-themed shrimp restaurant in Piccadilly Circus.

The report by Murtaza Ali Shah (The News / Geo) also notes that Golfrate Holdings (Angola) Lda, a company linked to Aziz, is under U.S. sanctions and listed as a “specially designated national” (SDN) by the U.S. government.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has temporarily moved out of his iconic bungalow Mannat along with his family, and shifted to a rented apartment.

According to Indian media reports, the actor’s decision to leave Mannat came amid renovation work at the bungalow.

Reports suggest that Khan and his family will reside in a rented flat in Pali Hill of Mumbai’s Bandra until the renovation is completed.

The lavish sea-facing mansion, Mannat, has been SRK’s residence for years and is a landmark among fans. However, the ongoing refurbishment has prompted the family to seek temporary accommodation.
