    Aamir Liaquat wants credit for PTV’s revival

    Aamir Liaquat finds ways to make it to the headlines one way or another. And this time he wants credit for PTV’s revival.

    Recently PTI Senator Faisal Javed Khan tweeted that PTV is “on its way to revival” and is making profits.

    Aamir, who hosted a Ramazan transmission on the state-owned channel, replied to Faisal’s tweet asking him to give him some credit for playing a role in PTV’s revival.

    While Faisal himself did not respond to Aamir’s tweet, some Twitter users took notice of Aamir’s tweet and decided to troll him.

    An anonymous Twitter user who goes by Baaji Please commented that self-praise is for losers to which Aamir replied that he’s not self-praising before asking Baaji not to hate on him.

    Baaji responded to Aamir saying she doesn’t like the fact that he’s begging for recognition.

    Dr Farhan Virk, who likes to insert himself in all situations, came to Aamir’s defense saying that Baaji is jealous of Aamir’s success. He said that Aamir single-handedly made PTV profitable by giving it time and effort without any greed.

    Baaji then asked Farhan if he’s implying that Aamir didn’t charge for the PTV transmission to which Aamir replied that he took “aatay main namak kay barabar paisay.”

    The arguments between the three continued and Aamir asserted that he did the Ramazan show on PM Imran Khan’s insistence and that the PM knows about his sacrifices for his country. Frankly speaking, the rest of the tweets were boring and unnecessary.

    UET bans social media on campus

    When Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp all were down earlier this week, we all panicked slightly and wondered to do with all the free time. Because let us admit, social media is a very important part of our lives. But imagine having to do without it for long periods of time and having to use emails for communication.

    Students of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) might have the answer to that as the university has banned the use of social media on campus, as well as the hostels. As per reports, students will no longer be allowed to use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube or WhatsApp. They will only be permitted to use those social media pages that have been approved by the Vice Chancellor. Official Facebook pages of university societies have also been instructed to shut down.

    Negative comments on any UET page will also be checked and action taken. Students who continue to use social media will be investigated under the Pakistan Cyber Law 2016.

    This is not the first time the UET management has taken such actions. Previously, UET made it compulsory for female students to wear a scarf or dupatta while imposing a ban on sleeveless shirts and capri pants. For male students, wearing shalwar kameez on Fridays was made compulsory.

    Lahore High Court bans promotional texts to telecom customers

    The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to take action on complaints against unwarranted promotional text messages and calls to telecom customers.

    Hearing a citizen’s petition questioning business promotions by different companies on Friday, Justice Shahid Jamil Khan observed that mobile phone users frequently complained about receiving text messages from water tank cleaning service providers.

    The PTA representative stated that there was no mechanism to control such text messages being received on a daily basis. However, the judge said that the authority could take action against mobile numbers used for sending these unnecessary promotions.

    The petitioner’s lawyer, on the other hand, demanded that PTA being a regulatory body be ordered to ban such promotional activities on phones.

    The hearing was then adjourned till July 19 and the judge hinted at summoning the PTA chief if an action was not taken on complaints against unwanted text messages and calls.

    Indian tennis star and Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik’s wife, Sania Mirza, has said she is proud of her husband, who announced retirement from ODI cricket following Pakistan’s last match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

    “Today I retire from One Day International [ODI] cricket. Huge thank you to all the players I have played with, coaches I have trained under, family, friends, media and sponsors. Most importantly, my fans. I love you all. PakistanZindabad,” the all-rounder tweeted, ending his career spanning over 20 years.

    As soon as Malik announced his decision, Sania took to social media to congratulate the veteran on an astounding career.

    “Every story has an end, but in life, every ending is a new beginning.  Shoaib Malik, you have proudly played for your country for 20 years and you continue to do so with so much honour and humility. Izhaan and I are so proud of everything you have achieved but also for who you are,” she wrote.

    “I am retiring from one-day cricket. I’m sad as I’m leaving the format I loved the most but this will allow me to spend more time with my family and concentrate on the Twenty20 World Cup next year,” Malik had said in a press conference after the match against Bangladesh Friday.

    Malik played 287 ODIs and scored 7,534 runs with nine hundreds. His performance in the 2019 World Cup, however, left his fans disappointed.

    The golden rule of parenting is: ‘Don’t make plans to go anywhere if you have a baby.’ Because chances are that you will either end up not going or you will regret it.

    That said, there’s something comforting about not being able to go out for a fancy dinner or having to dress up and being stuck at home with a baby who refuses to sleep. In short, plans ruined, clothes changed, makeup wiped off and food delivery options decided.

    It is also strange that the minute food is ordered, and a show to binge watch is decided, the baby decides to pass out and sleep like it’s the best sleep of their lives.

    Italian Express in Lahore, is the perfect Lahori comfort food. I specifically add the word Lahori to this because if there is one thing I have learnt about the Lahori palette is that they like their pasta terribly overcooked and super duper saucy.

    Italian Express is a small joint, which started off as a delivery service before turning into a small restaurant. The manager, who is an amicable and lovely fellow, recommended the pasta, which tasted more like Maggie noodles. Don’t get me wrong here. I do appreciate a bad pasta sloshed with Sriracha which hits the spot and Italian Express is terribly good at being bad comfort food.

    On the other hand, their pizza is the food of memories, with the taste of the 90s and notes of Ginos. Something a reviewer on their Facebook page doesn’t get. The user had lamented: “I ordered special thin crust pizza for the very first and the last time…the sauce was way too tangy, poor quality cheese and that too with extra mixing of cheddar very less topping and overly cooked tortilla base with too much oil like a paratha…guys do you even know how to make pizza. Pathetic.”

    Though the reviewer gave them no stars, he obviously didn’t understand how most Pakistanis crave the cheddar mozzarella pizza – the Kings and Queens of Karachi, The Uno of Lahore – the tangy sauce, which is a little ketchupy and of course, the thin crust that is soggy with crispy ends.

    It’s what reminds us of our childhood. Waiting outside pizza places, kids piled in a car, parents waiting, taking the pizza home in piping hot boxes and salivating at the thought of getting that first slice. Its bad pizza but it’s just so good because it transports you back to a time you fondly miss and rarely have the time to remember.

    So as you sit on your bed, eating your pizza in your pjs, watching a subtitled version of Netflix’s Money Heist, it’s the closest you get to a perfect night in. And munching down on memories, you look at that sleeping child and hope you can give her food that gives you the same kind of terrible tasting comfort.

    Karachi teen accuses mother of ‘getting her raped for money’

    A 15-year-old girl has accused her mother of having her “sexually assaulted for money” after she refused to get into a relationship with the alleged rapist, Geo News reported.

    Reports quoted the Gulistane Johar resident as saying that her mother was “a woman of bad character” and eight months ago had told her to get into a relationship with a man named Javed.

    “Upon refusal, she [the mother] beat me up and had me raped by Javed over and over for many months. In return, she took money from him,” the victim claimed in the First Information Report (FIR) against her mother.

    She further said that her mother had released a fake video of sexual assault on social media and filed a rape case against a man named Raza Bugti. “My mother had gotten into an argument with Bugti and forced me to support the allegations against him.”

    When the victim refused, her mother allegedly beat her up and threatened to make the same rape allegations against her brother, Kabeer.

    The #BottleCapChallenge has taken over the internet by storm. Celebrities across the world are taking the challenge hence making the trend viral. But what exactly is the #BottleCapChallenge?

    Though the exact origin of the challenge is not known, The New York Times reports that videos of the challenge first circulated widely in mixed martial arts circles and the trend may have been started with Farabi Davletchin, a Kazakh Taekwondo champion. But the challenge gained momentum after Jason Statham, the action-movie star known for his martial arts prowess, posted a video of himself kicking a bottle. His 23-second Instagram post has garnered more than 17.3 million views.

    The challenge involves unscrewing the cap of a bottle with a roundhouse kick without knocking the bottle over. The trick is to loosen the cap beforehand and have someone off-camera hold the bottle steady.

    Govt officials ditch Asad Umar at NA finance body meeting

    Government officials have ditched former finance minister Asad Umar at a session of the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs, a private media outlet reported.

    The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA was appointed chairman of the NA finance body after he was sacked by Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan as the country’s finance minister earlier this year.

    According to reports, Umar on Thursday expressed displeasure over the absence of government officials during a meeting of the parliamentary committee convened by him.

    The committee, in protest, has postponed its approval for the passage of government bills, including the Foreign Exchange Regulation Amendment Bill 2019, Anti-Money Laundering Amendment Bill 2019 and Asset Declaration Ordinance 2019.

    “We are postponing the passage of all government bills,” Umar was quoted as saying. “If the government is not serious about these bills, then they should at least take us [committee members] seriously,” he said.

    Continuing to desperately look for potential taxpayers, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has dispatched letters to parents paying Rs200,000 or more as their children’s annual school fee, The Express Tribune reported.

    Aggressively digging the records of citizens who, at some stage, have come under prominent sections of the Income Tax Ordinance, the FBR has asked the parents to declare their hidden assets and become tax return filers.

    “Data available with the FBR reveals that advance tax under Section 2361 of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 has been collected from you and deposited in the government treasury, meaning thereby that you are paying an annual fee exceeding Rs200,000 per child (student) to educational institutions,” said the letter sent by the FBR’s Corporate Regional Tax Office (RTO) in Lahore.

    According to Section 2361, every educational institution is required to collect advance income tax at the rate of 5% on the fee paid. The person responsible for preparing monthly, bimonthly or quarterly fee vouchers shall also charge withholding tax in case the fee exceeds Rs200,000 annually.

    “Please note that the FBR intends to register all those persons who are earning taxable income and are liable to file returns under the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, but have failed to do so,” it stated, adding the registration drive also included the persons who were liable to be registered under the Sales Tax Act 1990 or Federal Excise Act 2005.

    You sometimes come across people who restore your faith in humanity. Firefighter Waseem Abbas is one of those dedicated workers who lost his life in the line of duty while saving lives.

    According to details, Waseem Abbas was part of a rescue team which was undertaking an operation to douse fire in an old house in the inner city of Lahore. The fire damaged the roof of the house due to which it collapsed. Waseem came under the wreckage and died on spot. His dead body was found after two hours.

    District Rescue Office Shahid Waheed said that Abbas was a dedicated and hard-working official. The entire rescue team expressed grief over his demise.
