Here’s what Twitterati had to say about PM Imran’s statement:

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz also took a jibe at PM Imran.

“There is craft in daubing. He who used to criticise [others] for reading off a paper was neither able to read out his own oath nor deliver a speech,” she tweeted.

Maryam further said that he [PM Imran] reading off a paper was a spectacle, and so was he delivering an unprepared speech.

Pakistan named 20th biggest military spender in world; India fourth

With an expenditure of $11.4 billion, Pakistan was the 20th largest military spender in the world in 2018, a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) revealed Wednesday.

According to the report, the country’s expenditure that constitutes of four per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), is the highest level of military spending by Islamabad since 2004.

“Pakistan’s military spending has increased every year since 2009. It rose by a whopping 73 per cent between 2009 and 2018, and by 11 per cent in just one year [between 2017 and 2018],” the report said.

Despite the fact that Pakistan is not among the top 10 countries having the highest “military burden”, its military is among the strongest in the world.

As for other countries, the United States (US) remained the top military spender with $649 billion in 2018, which, by the way, decreased by 17 per cent in the past 10 years.

The second major military spender is China with $250 billion, followed by Saudi Arabia with $67.6 billion and India with $66.5 billion. Spending $63.8 billion, France clinched the fifth spot on the list.

The report further stated that India’s military spending increased by 3.1 per cent between 2017-2018 amid heightened tensions with Pakistan and China. New Delhi’s military burden, however, was the lowest since the 1960s.

  • Army lauds citizens as crime rate in Karachi falls below that of first world cities

Army lauds citizens as crime rate in Karachi falls below that of first world cities

Pakistan Army on Monday lauded the citizens and security forces of Karachi after the mega city’s ranking improved from 6th to 70th in the World Crime Index Comparison.

“Karachi at one point in time (2014) was 6th in World Crime Index. Alhamdulillah, today it’s at 70th with many first world cities behind,” Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Major General Asif Ghafoor tweeted.

The military spokesperson credited the improvement “to the team of civil administration and security forces and the citizens of Karachi”.

The list also compares crime rate in various cities around the world like New Delhi, Houston, Dhaka and Sao Paulo ahead of Karachi in terms of crime ranking.

According to a report by Sindh Rangers, since the beginning of the Karachi operation in September 2013, the law and order situation in the port city has improved considerably.

The incidents of target killings have witnessed a steep decline, while thousands of rounds of ammunition and weapons have also been seized by law enforcement agencies.

  • Pakistan’s forgotten Heritage Sites

    Pakistan’s forgotten Heritage Sites

We mourn the loss of Notre Dame and applaud how people are pledging to bring it back to life, but what about our own heritage sites? Here is a list of sites that have been restored and others that have been forgotten.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd-72NJcp9w

    Ranikot Fort

We might not be number 1 in a lot of things but we have the world’s largest fort. Didn’t know that? Neither did we until we read about it. In fact, the site is often referred to as the Great Wall of Sindh. Sadly, almost 60 percent of the walls have collapsed and multiple restoration projects have been shelved. Ranikot isn’t royal anymore.

Ziarat is a holiday resort near Quetta where Jinnah’s famous summer house is. The residence was destroyed in 2013 by militants, but completely restored a year later.

    Swat Buddha

The iconic seventh-century Buddha was destroyed by the Taliban in 2007. However, it was restored with the help of the Italians.

    Red Fort, Muzaffarabad

Built by the Chak rulers of Kashmir in the 16th Century. Much of it was destroyed in the 2005 earthquake and is yet to be repaired.

    Laxmi Mansion

We make movies about Manto but haven’t bothered to renovate the house he lived in. Lahore ka Laxmi Mansion is situated in Laxmi chowk but now no one lives there and if you ask someone for directions, they won’t even know where it is.

    Banbhore

Located in the Thatta district, this historic site dates back to first century BC. Apart from excavations with the help of Italian Archaeological experts, not much has been done to restore the site which was once an important port.

    Neelos

One of Defence’s first salons, Neelos has been a go-to parlour for decades. It’s fantastic for blowdries but more so for waxing. Our go-to girl is Mary for waxing and facials.

    Bina Khan Salon

Oh my God. Razia is legendary for eye brows at Bina Khan’s salon. She’s obsessively discussed on Facebook groups as well. We tried her and she definitely knows what she’s doing.

    Nabila’s

Expensive. But if you want a good hair color and cut, go to Adeel at Nabilas. He does a great color, knows what he’s doing and it’s nice for a splurge sometimes.

    Anam Farooq Khan

Young, fun and so so lovely, Anam Farooq is our go-to for party and bridal makeup. She makes you look so good that you have no choice but to feel good. She used to be at Tariq Amin’s salon but is now working on opening her own studio.

VIDEO: Punjab cops drag protester on road to make way for VIP convoy

As the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led Punjab government boasts reforming the police culture, a rather questionable video, showing cops dragging a protester on the road, has surfaced.

In the undated video making rounds over social media, at least three personnel of Punjab Police can be seen dragging a man to make way for a VIP motorcade.

    WATCH VIDEO:

The protester can be heard crying for help as he is dragged to the side of the road, while the cops return to their vehicles and drive away.

The video has widely been shared with the claim that the police brutality victim was “protesting his son’s murder” in front of the convoy of an unknown official when the cops charged.

The official version to the incident will be added to the story as soon as The Current receives it.

  • ‘IAF pilot Abhinandan’ spotted urging Indians to vote for Modi’s party

‘IAF pilot Abhinandan’ spotted urging Indians to vote for Modi’s party

In an attempt to bag maximum votes in the ongoing Indian general elections, Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched “Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Abhinandan Varthaman” for electioneering.

Hailed a hero in India, Wing Commander Abhinandan was captured when his fighter jet was shot down by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in February. He, however, was later released as a peace gesture by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

With the Hindu nationalist BJP campaigning for Lok Sabha polls in national defence’s name, a fake picture of Abhinandan urging Indians to vote for the ruling party is being shared on social media.

The picture has been breaking the internet with a claim that the IAF pilot is supporting the BJP and has voted for Modi.

In the photo, the pilot’s doppelganger — having his trademark handlebar moustache and a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses — can be seen wearing a muffler with the BJP’s electoral symbol.

The Hindi caption of the viral post urges people to vote for the BJP.

Nonetheless, upon examining the picture closely, its falsehood is narrated. Indians too are pointing out the deception of the BJP, while IAF has also reportedly declared the poster as fake.

    Some, however, defended the statement.

PM Imran is set to pay an official two-day visit to Iran on April 21 on the invitation of President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hassan Rouhani.

According to the Foreign Office, the premier will meet Iranian Supreme Leader Seyed Ali Khamenei, besides holding detailed consultations with President Rouhani.
