Meesha Shafi ‘honoured’ to share stage with Atif Aslam at sold-out Toronto concert

Pakistani-Canadian powerhouse Meesha Shafi had her ultimate dream-come-true moment as she shared the stage with none other than pop rock royalty, Atif Aslam, at a completely sold-out Scotiabank Arena and yes, it was a vibes-on scene.

Sharing a series of pictures and high-voltage videos of her performance, Meesha wrote, “SOLD OUT @atifaslam @scotiabankarena last night and took me along for the ride.”

“The first Pakistani artist to sell out the iconic venue while being the only name on the bill. A historic night for all of us. A proud moment to witness and an absolute honor to share the stage with this legend! [sic]” she added.

Meesha also gave fans a backstage pass to the madness, filming Atif mid-performance while the crowd went absolutely wild — the kind of stadium-shaking roar you feel in your bones.

Another video showed both the singers performing Punjabi banger Jugni.

Shafi is a singer, actress, and model known for her work in film, music, and her activism for women’s rights. She launched her solo music career on Coke Studio in 2010, later releasing her debut album Khilney Ko in 2025. She has since toured internationally with her band.

Meanwhile, Atif Aslam is in full beast mode on his North America Tour 2025. The tour includes dates throughout the late summer and fall of 2025, with stops in major cities such as Garland, Detroit, Chicago, Everett, Los Angeles and Oakland, and extends into Canada with a concert in Calgary.

  • ‘Oldest baby’ born from frozen embryo in US

‘Oldest baby’ born from frozen embryo in US

A baby boy has been born in the US from an embryo frozen three decades ago, making him one of the oldest embryos ever successfully used in a birth.

Thaddeus Daniel Pierce was born on July 26 in Ohio to Lindsey and Tim Pierce. The couple adopted an embryo that had been cryopreserved since 1994 and originally belonged to Linda Archerd, now 62.

In the early 1990s, Archerd and her then-husband underwent IVF treatment, which resulted in four embryos.

One was implanted, leading to the birth of a daughter who is now 30 years old and has a 10-year-old child of her own. The remaining embryos were frozen and stored.

Archerd was given custody of the embryos during the divorce and later chose embryo “adoption”, a process in which recipients and donors decide who receives the embryos.

The Pierces’ criteria aligned with Archerd’s preference for the embryo to go to a married, white, Christian couple.

“We didn’t go into it thinking we would break any records,” Lindsey told MIT Technology Review. “We just wanted to have a baby.”

Speaking about the experience, she added, “We had a rough birth, but we’re both doing well now. He is so chill. We are in awe that we have this precious baby.”

Archerd, upon seeing the baby’s photo, said: “The first thing that I noticed when Lindsey sent me his pictures is how much he looks like my daughter when she was a baby. I pulled out my baby book and compared them side by side, and there is no doubt that they are siblings.”

John Gordon, a Reformed Presbyterian and reproductive endocrinologist, operated the fertility clinic where the embryo transfer took place.

The clinic believes that all embryos should have a chance at life, which is why it encourages the transfer of long-frozen embryos.

“We have certain guiding principles, and they’re coming from our faith,” Gordon said.

“Every embryo deserves a chance at life and that the only embryo that cannot result in a healthy baby is the embryo not given the opportunity to be transferred into a patient.”

The Human Fertilization and Embryo Authority (HFEA) reports that the number of IVF births globally is increasing. IVF accounted for 3.1% of births in the UK in 2023, up from 1.3% in 2000.

IVF now accounts for 11% of births among women aged 40 to 44. Approximately 2% of all births in the US involve the procedure.

  • US urges China to keep Iran from shutting key trade route

US urges China to keep Iran from shutting key trade route

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged China Sunday to help deter Iran from shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial trade route, following American strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

“I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them about that because they heavily depend on the Strait of Hormuz for their oil,” Rubio said on Fox News.

Analysts have said Iran may opt to retaliate to Washington’s early Sunday attack by shutting the Strait, a waterway through which one-fifth of global oil output passes.

“If they do that, it will be another terrible mistake. It’s economic suicide for them if they do it, and we retain options to deal with that,” Rubio added.

“But other countries should be looking at that as well, it would hurt other countries’ economies a lot worse than ours. It would be, I think, a massive escalation that would merit a response. Not just by us but from others,” he said.

Meanwhile, Iran has threatened bases used by the US military, with an advisor to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei saying they will be considered a “legitimate target for our armed forces.”

However, it remains to be seen whether the US strikes will push Tehran to de-escalate the conflict or to widen it further.

China has joined Russia and a chorus of Arab states in condemning the US attacks, saying that they “escalate tensions in the Middle East.”

  • China, US slash sweeping tariffs in trade war climbdown

China, US slash sweeping tariffs in trade war climbdown

Washington and Beijing agreed to drastically lower skyhigh tariffs in a deal that emerged from pivotal talks at the weekend in Geneva.

US President Donald Trump said Washington now had the blueprint for a “very, very strong” trade deal with China that would see Beijing’s economy “open up” to US businesses, in an interview broadcast Tuesday on Fox News.

“We have the confines of a very, very strong deal with China. But the most exciting part of the deal…that’s the opening up of China to US business,” he told the US broadcaster while aboard Air Force One on the way to the start of his Gulf tour.

“One of the things I think that could be most exciting for us and also for China, is that we’re trying to open up China,” he added, without elaborating on details.

Trump had upended international commerce with his sweeping tariffs across economies, with China hit hardest.

Unwilling to budge, Beijing had responded with retaliatory levies that brought tariffs on both sides well over 100 percent.

After billions were wiped off equities and with businesses ailing, negotiations finally got underway at the weekend in Geneva between the world’s trade superpowers to find a way out of the impasse.

Under the deal, the United States agreed to lower its tariffs on Chinese goods to 30 percent while China will reduce its own to 10 percent — down by over 100 percentage points.

The reductions came into effect just after midnight Washington time (0401 GMT) on Wednesday, a major de-escalation in trade tensions that saw US tariffs on Chinese imports soar to up to 145 percent and even as high as 245 percent on some products.

Markets have rallied in the glow of the China-US tariff suspension.

Chinese officials have kept their cards closer to their chests, pitching themselves at a summit in Beijing with Latin American leaders this week as a stable partner and defender of globalisation.

“There are no winners in tariff wars or trade wars,” Xi told leaders including Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, while his top diplomat Wang Yi swiped at a “major power” that believed “might makes right”.

    ‘Risk of renewed escalation’

Deep sources of tension remain, too — the US additional tariff rate remains higher than China’s because it includes a 20 percent levy over Trump’s complaints about Chinese exports of chemicals used to make fentanyl.

Washington has long accused Beijing of turning a blind eye to the fentanyl trade, something China denies.

And while the US said it sees room for progress on the issue, Beijing on Tuesday warned Washington to “stop smearing and shifting blame” onto it.

Analysts also warn that the possibility of tariffs coming back into force after 90 days simply piles on more uncertainty.

“Further tariff reductions will be difficult and the risk of renewed escalation persists,” Yue Su, Principal Economist at The Economist Intelligence Unit, told AFP.

Trump’s rollercoaster tariff row with Beijing has wreaked havoc on US companies that rely on Chinese manufacturing, with a temporary de-escalation only expected to partially calm the storm.

And Beijing officials have admitted that China’s economy — already ailing from a protracted property crisis and sluggish consumer spending — is likewise being affected by the trade uncertainty.

“Both sides have endured a good deal of economic pain and they can still endure a little bit more,” Dylan Loh, an assistant professor at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, told AFP.

  • ‘Osama Bin Laden is a martyr’: Anti-Imran Khan ads popup on trucks in US

‘Osama Bin Laden is a martyr’: Anti-Imran Khan ads popup on trucks in US

Amid unprecedented support for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from officials of Donald Trump’s incoming administration, multiple digital billboard trucks featuring controversial statements of the former premier have popped up across the United States (US).

Undated videos on social media showed trucks driving around Washington DC among other cities in the US, displaying a digital billboard bearing Khan’s past remarks about the Afghan Taliban and late Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden.

“Osama bin Laden is a martyr,” read one of Khan’s statements. During his speech on the floor of the parliament during the 2020 budget session, then-prime minister (PM) Khan had said that Americans came to Abbottabad and “martyred Osama bin Laden”.

Another statement by Khan displayed on the digital display read, “Taliban’s holy war in Afghanistan is justified by Islamic Law [sic].” The former premier had made the statement in October 2012 when he referred to Taliban’s anti-US fighters as jihadis.

He had said whoever was fighting for their freedom was participating in jihad, and so the Afghan Taliban’s fight against foreign occupation was also jihad.

Among other anti-Khan adverts displayed on the trucks was the news of his disqualification by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for lying about Tyrian White, as well as the alleged threats he hurled at police officers in Pakistan.

With the campaign leaving netizens divided, some say it was planned to malign Khan ahead of Trump’s inauguration, whereas others said it was only a consequence of his “recklessness” since none of the statements were wrongly attributed to him.

One social media user said such campaigns only affected Pakistan’s reputation on the global stage while another highlighted how supporting an “extremist” like the former Pakistani premier could end up being a “threat to national security”.

“The diaspora must focus on unity and progress rather than divisive narratives. Let’s channel our energies towards building a stronger Pakistan together,” said one user. Another netizen said that true patriotism was about constructive actions, not blind allegiance. “It’s time to support leaders and initiatives that genuinely prioritise the nation’s welfare.”

Jailed Khan and his PTI have in recent weeks garnered quite the support from officials of the upcoming US administration amid social media campaigns calling on Trump to push for the release of the ousted former PM.

While Trump is yet to comment on the issue and Pakistan maintains that Khan’s trials and sentence are an internal matter, the president-elect’s aide on special missions Richard Grenell has been rather vocal in demanding the PTI founder’s freedom.

  • Thieves stole weird items from Nadia Hussain’s US home

Thieves stole weird items from Nadia Hussain’s US home

Model and actress Nadia Hussain has shared the shocking story of a robbery at her home in the USA.

Appearing as a guest on Good Morning Pakistan with Nida Yasir, the Parizaad actress opened up about robbery at her house in the USA.

Nadia Hussain said, “We had locked all the doors, windows, and exits of the house. We even had detectors installed on the glass windows, but the one door we didn’t secure was the balcony door of our room. We didn’t put a detector there because we usually slept with that door locked ourselves. We thought if anyone ever came through the balcony door, we’d use the emergency button installed there. We never thought it was necessary to secure it.”

The Jalan actress described how the thief took everything without leaving a trace.

“I had real jewelry at home that I never kept it in lockers. But the thief didn’t even leave my plastic jewelry. He even took the plastic bangles with beads that I used to wear, which were from before my wedding. He (thieves) stole everything smoothly and left without leaving a trace.”

She explained how the thief broke into her house:

“The thief climbed up to the balcony, cut a small part of the mesh screen, unlatched the lock from the inside, opened the door, and then broke through the inner bedroom door. We had cameras installed all around the house, but not inside the bedroom. The thief came and exited through the balcony, which made it clear it was someone familiar with the house.”

Nadia also recalled the moment her husband, who was in the USA, discovered the robbery.

“It so happened that my husband, who was in America, returned and found that my drawers, which were locked with padlocks and everything, were broken into. I had locked everything, and he broke them. This incident happened around 12 years ago,” Nadia Hussain concluded.

Earlier, actress Nadia Hussain has revealed that she pleaded to attend a party hosted by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan.

Talking on the show Hasna Mana Hai, where she shared interesting anecdotes from her career with host Tabish Hashmi, Nadia was asked about an incident from her visit to Mumbai, India, “When you went to India, what happened when you saw some scenes at the hotel where you were staying?”

In response, Nadia said, “I had gone to Mumbai to shoot an advertisement, and Salman Khan’s sister’s birthday party was being held in the hall of the hotel where we were staying.”

  • Pakistani man with strong ties to Iran charged in US with attempt to carry out assassinations

Pakistani man with strong ties to Iran charged in US with attempt to carry out assassinations

A United States Federal court in Brooklyn has charged a Pakistani national with close ties to Iran, Asif Merchant, also known as “Asif Raza Merchant,” 46, with murder-for-hire as part of a scheme to assassinate a politician or U.S. government officials on U.S. soil, including potentially former President Donald Trump.

Asif travelled to New York in June to meet with people he thought he was recruiting for carrying out assassinations, including paying $5,000 advance to two men, who turned out to be undercover law enforcement officers, Associated Press reported.

He was arrested in July after he told his would-be assassins that they would get further instruction, including the targets’ identities, in August or September after he returned to Pakistan.

“This dangerous murder-for-hire plot exposed in today’s charges allegedly was orchestrated by a Pakistani national with close ties to Iran and is straight out of the Iranian playbook,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray.

The Associated Press also reported that Asif also indicated to his associate that he wanted a “political person” to be killed, mapping out on a napkin the different strategies on how the target could be killed.

Journalist Iftikhar Firdous posted on X, “His case file on the U.S. Justice Department’s website shows that he has a wife and children both in Iran and Pakistan while he has been consistently travelling to Iran, Syria and Iraq. This would be the second incident this year where Pakistani nationals with ties to Iranian militias in the Middle East have been arrested by the FBI.”

  • From maggots to the devil: All you need to know about Netanyahu’s US visit

From maggots to the devil: All you need to know about Netanyahu’s US visit

July 24, 2024, was another day that will go down in history.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was enthusiastically welcomed at the United States Capitol to address Congress for the fourth time.

But this time, things were different.

On the streets of America, a large number of protestors swarmed in, carrying Palestinian flags, asserting their disapproval of the US state for hosting a man who has been deemed a war criminal by anti-genocide advocates worldwide.

Some protestors also reportedly released maggots and mealworms at the Watergate Hotel where PM Netanyahu, Israeli Mossad agents, and the Secret Service were to stay.

Back in May this year, Prosecutor Karim Khan at the International Criminal Court (ICC) called for arrest warrants for the Israeli PM and his associates for committing “war crimes and crimes against humanity” in Gaza.

As of yet, at least 39,145 people have been killed and 90,257 injured in Gaza since October 7 — the day when Israel began its deadly operations in the besieged strip, using Hamas’ attacks as justification for the bloodshed witnessed worldwide.

Are all Congress members supportive of Netanyahu?

More than 50 members reportedly boycotted or skipped the address, close to the 58 members who chose to abstain from attending Netanyahu’s 2015 speech.

Among the members are Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Ilhan Omar, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Bernie Sanders, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Punjabi-Hindu descendant Rep. Ro Khanna.

Pelosi criticised PM Netanyahu’s presentation in the House Chamber as “by far the worst presentation of any foreign dignitary invited and honored with the privilege of addressing the Congress of the United States.”

However, Rashida Tlaib, member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan, attended the Israeli PM’s speech for all the right reasons.

Among the audience who gave Netanyahu a standing ovation on every claim, Tlaib stood out as the only hero in the room, wearing her Palestinian flag pin and a keffiyeh, holding a sign that read “guilty of genocide” on one side and “war criminal” on the other.

    Who is Rashida Tlaib?

Tlaib was born in the US to Palestinian parents — both of whom came from Palestine “for a better life,” she said in a post on social media.

She is the eldest daughter of 14 kids who earned her bachelor’s in political science and Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2004. Rashida Tlaib then entered the Michigan state bar in 2007.

In 2022, she was re-elected to the U.S. Congress as one of the first two Muslim women (along with Ilhan Omar) and the first Palestinian woman.

“I will never back down in speaking truth to power”, she posted on X following PM Netanyahu’s speech.

“The apartheid government of Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians. Palestinians will not be erased. Solidarity with all those outside of these walls in the streets protesting and exercising their right to dissent.”

    https://x.com/RashidaTlaib/status/1816200931848950184

    What did PM Netanyahu say?

    • “Like December 7th, 1941, and September 11th, 2001, October 7th is a day that will forever live in infamy.”

    • “For the forces of civilization to triumph, America and Israel must stand together. Because when we stand together, something very simple happens. We win. They lose.

And my friends, I came to assure you today of one thing: we will win.”

    • ‘I thank President Biden for his heartful support for Israel after the savage attack on October 7th. He rightly called Hamas “sheer evil.”’ President Biden and I have known each other for over forty years. I want to thank him for half a century of friendship to Israel and for being, as he says, a proud Zionist. Actually, he says, a proud Irish American Zionist.

    • “…the Muslim soldiers of the IDF fought alongside their Jewish, Druze, Christian and other comrades in arms with tremendous bravery.”

    • “As the Bible says, “עם כלביא יקום” —they shall rise like lions. They’ve risen like lions, the lions of Judah, the lions of Israel.”

    • “These protesters chant “From the river to the sea.” But many don’t have a clue what river and what sea they’re talking about.”

    • “For nearly four thousand years, the land of Israel has been the homeland of the Jewish people. It’s always been our home; it will always be our home.”

    • “Now, just as malicious lies were levelled for centuries at the Jewish people, malicious lies are now being levelled at the Jewish state.”

    • “The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has shamefully accused Israel of deliberately starving the people of Gaza. This is utter complete nonsense. It’s a complete fabrication.”

    • “The vast majority of Americans have not fallen for this Hamas propaganda. They continue to support Israel, and I want to say: Thank you America, and thank you, senators and house members who continue to support us, continue to support Israel, continue to support the truth and see through the lies.”

    • “If you remember one thing, one thing from this speech, remember this: Our enemies are your enemies, our fight is your fight, and our victory will be your victory.”

    • “The new alliance I envision would be a natural extension of the groundbreaking Abraham Accords. Those Accords saw peace forged between Israel and four Arab countries, and they were supported by Republican and Democrats alike.

I have a name for this new alliance. I think we should call it: The Abraham Alliance.”

  • ‘kamala IS brat’: Pop world backs Harris

‘kamala IS brat’: Pop world backs Harris

The pop world has coalesced rapidly around Kamala Harris’s last-minute candidacy, as the US vice president gets a boost from an online explosion of videos mixing her speeches with hit songs.

Janelle Monae, John Legend and Charli XCX are among the star musicians who have publicly backed Harris, along with myriad Hollywood endorsements including from George Clooney, Viola Davis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Robert De Niro.

Even Beyonce — who is known to strictly guard clearance of her music — reportedly has approved the Harris campaign to use her song “Freedom” on the trail.

The megastar’s mother, Tina Knowles, quickly backed the now-presumptive Democratic nominee Harris after President Joe Biden’s late-stage election exit.

Fans have been posting remixes of Harris speeches and interviews — her idiosyncratic phrasings frequently catch meme fire and the past week have been aflame — with music by pop artists of the moment, including star of the summer Charli XCX, Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan.

It helps that Harris is eminently memeable; plenty of videos show her dancing with physical comedy bordering on slapstick.

The internet used to mash up those kooky moments to diss the 59-year-old VP — but since Biden’s campaign plummeted following his disastrous debate, the videos appear to be bolstering her presence, notably among chronically online young voters.

Celebrities have also gotten on board, capturing the marketing moment in the inextricably linked worlds of music and social media while also leaning into Harris’s candidacy.

British artist Charli XCX in particular has seen her smash album “brat” become core to the early online Harris campaign.

The “brat summer” meme was already alive and well before Harris became associated with it.

The trend emphasizes an aesthetic and lifestyle inspired by Charli’s club album that offers a heavy dose of party-girl energy with undertones of youthful anxiety.

When fans began applying the inescapable lime-green “brat” filter to Kamala Harris images, Charli XCX voiced approval.

“kamala IS brat,” the 31-year-old pop star posted, a sign-off the Harris campaign quickly embraced.

In its transition from Biden to Harris, the campaign’s official X account also rebranded as brat-coded, with its cover photo mimicking the album’s neon-green — “Shrek-colored,” as the internet likes to call it — and lo-resolution JPEG vibe.

Katy Perry, whose anthemic “Roar” was frequently played on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, also pushed her latest single “Woman’s World” while backing Harris.

She posted a montage clip of Harris with a remix of her song and the now famous “coconut tree” quote that’s also made the presidential hopeful an internet star.

“It’s a woman’s world, and you’re lucky to be living in it,” sings Perry.

Cardi B reminded fans she had already said Harris should replace Biden, whom she supported in 2020 after initially backing the socialist-leaning Senator Bernie Sanders.

Shortly after Biden announced his withdrawal, the Bronx rapper reposted a video she’d made prior in which she says Harris should be the Democratic flag-bearer.

“STOP PLAYING WIT ME!!!!” she wrote in her caption accompanying the clip, emphasizing her self-proclaimed prescience.

“Told y’all Kamala should’ve been the 2024 candidate. Y’all be trying to play the Bronx education, baby this what I do!!! Been my passion.. don’t let my accent fool y’all.”

Cardi B had previously indicated that she wasn’t planning to vote when Biden was the nominee — she did not make clear whether her stance had changed now that Harris was the presumed candidate.
