Celebrities express outrage over condition of brown bear in Karachi Zoo

Just when we breathed a sigh of relief after it emerged that Islamabad Zoo’s lone elephant Kavaan will soon head to Cambodia, where he will retire at an animal sanctuary, videos and pictures of a brown bear in dreadful conditions at the Karachi Zoo have sparked furor and outrage on social media. Celebrities including Ushna Shah, Armeena Khan and Mashal Khan expressed their distress over the condition of the bear and urged authorities to shut down the zoo.

In a message penned in Urdu, Ushna said that zoo culture should be completely eliminated and that citizens should actively campaign for them to be shut down.

“If you like looking at animals, go observe them in their natural habitat. When you come and look at them in zoos, you add to their agony”, said the actor.

“Raise your voice for those who can’t speak,” she added.

Armeena urged her followers to help the brown bear or else he would die.

Mashal Khan said that she is “sick to my stomach after learning of this poor baby in Karachi zoo, being jailed without food, water, health care”. She asked her followers to raise their voice for the bear and help end her ordeal.

Later, the actor shared that she and her friends are filing a Constitutional Petition in the Sindh High Court to rescue the baby bear and have her transferred to Skardu where she can be reunited with her family.

Meanwhile, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Administrator Dr Iftikhar Ali Shallwani slammed the claims and said that the bear is “hale and hearty” at the zoo. Sharing a video of the bear playing in his enclosure as well as a report on its condition, Dr Shallwani said: “The KMC is trying it’s best to give natural habitat to the animals at Karachi Zoo.”

However, reports have suggested that all is not well as the administrator has claimed. According to a senior Sindh Wildlife Department (SWD) official, the bear is not used to living in Karachi’s hot weather conditions, especially during this time of the year when it needs to hibernate in freezing temperature.

Another SWD official said that Karachi Zoo’s management was responsible for the bear’s dreadful condition. He said that the animal does not belong in the zoo and that she needed to be kept in an air-conditioned room, in darkness.

After the pictures of the bear went viral on social media, a picture of a malnourished and underfed lion was also widely circulated with people criticising the Karachi Zoo administration for mistreating animals.

However, it later emerged that the picture of the lion was not from Karachi Zoo.

Last week Feroze Khan had also posted pictures of Karachi Zoo’s dilapidated conditions and had questioned where his taxes were going.

Celebrities step in to defend Yasir Hussain after trolling gets intense

Yasir Hussain’s criticism of QMobile appointing Esra Bilgiç as their brand ambassador has left the entertainment industry divided once again. While some actors have seconded Yasir’s opinion, others have said that it’s not a big deal and international artists should be welcome in Pakistan.

Yasir’s comments were met with a barrage of hate and threats from Diriliş: Ertuğrul fans, some of which went out of control. Following the hate and online bullying, several of Yasir’s colleagues including Ayesha Omar, Wajahat Rauf, Armeena Khan and Yashma Gill stepped in to defend the actor and urged people to respect each other’s opinions.

While Ayesha was of the opinion that we should welcome foreign stars into the country, she said that she did not understand why actors have to be bullied for their opinions.

“One can disagree respectfully and have healthy debates and discussions,” said Ayesha.

Armeena expressed her disappointment at the vile comments coming Yasir’s ways.

Yashma penned a detail note on her thoughts and said that she never found Yasir’s posts to be offensive.

“It‘s completely okay for people to have different opinions,” said Yashma. “I don’t think any actor/influencer tries to impose their opinion on anyone. In fact, what they try to achieve is some logical brainstorming. And try to help the society by challenging some biases, stereotypes and taboos because they truly want to use their platforms for the best reasons possible.”

Director Wajahat Rauf shared similar sentiments and said that it is unfortunate that a person is not allowed to voice his or her opinion.

  • Ushna Shah will not apologise for expressing herself

Ushna Shah will not apologise for expressing herself

Ushna Shah has often found herself in the middle of some controversy or another.

In a recent interview with Iffat Omar, the actor opened up about speaking her mind and being at the receiving end of trolls and hate. Later, she expressed her thoughts on the same topic on social media and said: “I have forsaken the dignity a celebrity must maintain and clarified/responded to each tweet/thought that has bothered the world so much. I’ve answered all the burning questions that have propelled hundreds of headlines. From your pizzas to your singers. I will speak on these no further. I have answered all “controversies” for them now and for the future.”

She continued: “I refuse to become a performer off-screen. I refuse to give up my right to express myself as a human and not a manufactured machine. I am dheet (stubborn) because I will continue to tweet/say what I believe is my right (as long as it is not discriminatory or hate speech, something I have never stood for).”

“I do not want to pose a facade of perfection because I am far from it, and very happily so,” added Ushna.

“I don’t know how to be anyone else off-camera, that is another career on its own. That is a talent I do not possess,” she said. “It breaks my heart that I have already had to hide so many aspects of who I am just to fit in.. an example being my Canadian accent (I’ve changed it so often over the years that now it feels like another language which I speak when I’m outside the Pakistani industry or circles). I used to dance in school, I’ve been afraid to do so here, why? I am an artist, it is my art. I’ve always feared that my liberal, as well as foreign upbringing, would paint me as a bad person or my family as bad people, they’ve feared that also.”

In a successive post, the actor said that she is “bowing out of this circus”.

“What I want; what’s most important to me, is to create art. So for the countless hits, the spicy gossip, and the drawing-room discussions my name has entertained you with off-camera… you’re welcome. I have paid my dues, I’m bowing out of this circus,” wrote Ushna. “Now please, let me get back to work.”

While Ushna has received praise for her performances in dramas such as Balaa and Bewafa, her unfiltered thoughts on various topics have made headlines more than her work.

Ushna Shah gets a lesson on Pakistani female singers from Hadiqa Kiani

Ushna Shah is in the spotlight again for sharing an “unpopular opinion” related to female singers in Pakistan. In a now-deleted tweet, Ushna shared how she felt that Aima Baig and Quratul Ain Balouch are the “only incredible female vocalists” that we have.

She later also commented on Sahir Ali Bagga’s track which he composed with Hadiqa Kiani, saying, “Putting this on record, should’ve taken Aiman Khan for the vocals,” adding that the current track “ruined my visuals.”

Social media assumes that Shah wanted to tag Aima Baig instead of actor Aiman Khan.

However, when Hadiqa Kiani found out about it, she responded to it by making a list of all the legendary female singers of Pakistan.

Aima Baig also jumped in to share her opinion and said that new talented girls should also be given a chance to fulfill their dreams.

Following the backlash, Ushna apologised to Kiani and said that she is “delirious and opinionated late night”.

In a long post shared on social media, Ushna said that she was confused over the matter and wanted people’s thoughts on it before she formed an opinion.

“However, that momentary confusion was tone-deaf and unwarranted. I don’t work in a hospital, I don’t know what the frontliners are going through. Frankly, I don’t even get to have an opinion on this,” she wrote, adding that she has made it a point to thank them in whatever way she can.

“I vehemently apologise for any offense caused what so ever. I am in absolutely no position to question anything doctors and nurses to to take the edge off.”

“We owe them our lives,” she remarked.

On Thursday, Ushna had said that while she understands that doctors need their breaks, she is confused over whether the doctors are wasting their precious time doing this. She later deleted her tweet. However, social media was quick to call her out for her ignorant remarks.

  • Ushna Shah questions morality in Pakistan

Ushna Shah questions morality in Pakistan

Ushna Shah recently penned a powerful message on the rape and murder of Nimrita Kumari and ⁣questioned the standards and definition of morality in Pakistan.

Sharing a picture of herself from a protest held for Nimrita, Ushna wrote, “Rape has always plagued mankind, especially the subcontinent; but because I live in Pakistan I would like us to question our society.”

“Children abducted for child porn rings, my work with animal organisations leads me to cases of dogs being brutally gang raped. Women, children, minorities & even dogs/donkeys/dolphins/goats aren’t safe.⁣”

She continued, “In a country where a picture with my bare arms warrants being asked the question “Are you Muslim” repeatedly, why is there so much moral corruption? So many vanguards of morality online yet the stats don’t make sense.”

“When I was only six, within one summer in Pakistan, I learnt of two rapes. This was one summer in Pakistan and both of these atrocities happened near my house hence I knew about them. One. Summer.⁣”

“I am not demeaning our country, I am simply stating facts & asking WHY these figures are so high in our pious nation,” Ushna lamented.

“Could it be that the over-segregation, over sexualizing the most basic aspects of a woman’s body, the most strict taboos against any hint of sexuality have created a sickness beyond repair? Pakistan has topped the list of the most porn searching country yet there is an army of piety trolls issuing online fatwas against actresses baring their arms. Something isn’t adding up,” she concluded.

Nimrita Kumari Chandani, a final year student at Bibi Aseefa Dental College (BADC), was found dead in mysterious circumstances in her hostel room on September 16, 2019. The university, intially claimed that the student has committed suicide. However, on the insistence of her brother and massive province-wide protests, a judicial inquiry was ordered to look into the matter.

While the probe is still underway, the final postmortem report issued by Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH) Woman Medico-Legal Officer (WMLO) Dr Amrita revealed that the deceased was subjected to rape before being murdered.

As per the autopsy report, Nimrita’s death was determined to be caused by suffocation as asphyxial signs caused by a ligature on the neck were seen during the autopsy. The report further stated that a DNA test confirmed the presence of male DNA profile indicated from semen residue on the deceased’s clothes whereas a vaginal swab tested positive for a forced sexual act.

It is pertinent to mention here that Usha in her recent drama Cheekh played a young woman who was physically assaulted and murdered. The superhit drama also starred Saba Qamar, Bilal Abbas Khan and Aijaz Aslam among others.
