Minor attempts suicide after nude videos used for extortion in Alipur

Alipur police are investigating a case in which two men allegedly lured a minor into a forest and recorded nude videos at gunpoint. The videos were later used to extort money and other items from the child.

According to the police, the suspects have been identified as Kashif Bhutta and Ali Bosan.

Within the limits of City Police Station, the men allegedly approached Asad Abbas and took him to a forest. There, police said, they forced him to remove his clothes while recording the videos and threatened to make them public unless their demands were met.

The police report stated that the victim provided Rs200,000 to the suspects following the extortion. After receiving the money, the suspects reportedly demanded that the minor hand over an iPhone. The demand was not met, and soon after, the recorded videos were leaked.

Following the leak, the boy reportedly attempted suicide. The father of the minor filed a complaint with the police, which led to the registration of a formal case against the two men.

  • Bihar CM Nitish Kumar under fire for pulling off Muslim doctor’s niqab

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar under fire for pulling off Muslim doctor’s niqab

Bihar Chief Minister (CM) Nitish Kumar in India has drawn criticism after a video showed him pulling down the niqab of a Muslim doctor during an official government event in Patna.

The incident took place during the distribution of appointment letters to newly-recruited doctors at the CM Secretariat.

Video from the event showed the Janata Dal (United) leader, CM Kumar, pointing at the face of an Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathic (AYUSH) doctor wearing a headscarf while presenting her with a certificate, reaching out and pulling down her veil.

As the shameless move revealed the woman’s face and chin before she could respond, an official standing near the stage immediately pulled the visibly flustered woman aside.

Laughter was heard in the background as Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary appeared to intervene and attempt to stop Kumar.

The incident prompted strong reactions from Indian opposition parties.

The Indian National Congress was the first to publicly condemn the act, terming it “vile” and accusing the CM of inappropriate behaviour towards a woman official in full public view.

In a post on X, the Congress questioned the conduct of someone holding the highest executive office in Bihar and demanded his resignation.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) also reacted strongly, raising concerns over the CM’s mental fitness. In its statement, the party said Kumar’s condition had reached a “completely pitiable” stage, questioning how such behaviour could occur during a formal state function.

The incident sparked significant outrage on social media, especially among Muslim women and rights advocates, in addition to political criticism.

Many described the act as public harassment and a violation of personal autonomy, arguing that forcibly touching a woman’s clothing amounted to an attack on dignity and modesty. Several reactions framed the incident as legally actionable, questioning why no formal case had been registered.

Others called the act an attack on a woman’s dignity and modesty, stating that her niqab should not be treated as a prop on public stage.

While some insisted that the CM owed the woman an unconditional apology, critics also labelled the behaviour “irresponsible, immoral, and violent” and argued that such public humiliation must have consequences.

A number of Pakistani netizens also reacted to the incident, saying, “Jinnah proven right, yet again” and “Thank you Jinnah”, linking the move to broader concerns about minority rights in India.

  • Saba Faisal faces backlash for saying brides should not choose wedding outfits

Saba Faisal faces backlash for saying brides should not choose wedding outfits

Actor Saba Faisal has sparked controversy for disagreeing with mothers-in-law allowing brides to independently choose and shop for their wedding outfits.

“In the past, newly married women wore outfits selected by their in-laws and I also followed the same tradition,” she said while appearing on a morning show.

“One of the biggest mistakes some mothers of grooms make today is giving brides complete freedom to design and select their wedding wardrobes from the very beginning,” she said.

“Handing over all such decisions to the bride at the start is not a good approach,” the veteran actor said.

Acknowledging that brides should feel comfortable in what they wear, Faisal said that issues arise when a bride continues to only wear the outfits she selected by herself, adding that it can affect balance in a new household.

Her comments drew sharp criticism from fellow celebrities and social media users.

Actor Fiza Ali responded in an Instagram story, saying a truly peaceful home is one where the daughter-in-law feels respected and at ease, not merely silent or submissive.

“A woman wanting to wear clothes according to her own preference should not be seen as disrespectful but as natural desire,” Fiza said, emphasising that while a mother-in-law’s opinion matters, taking away a daughter-in-law’s right to make decisions is not love but control.

Highlighting a common social issue, she pointed out that a woman’s happiness is often prioritised when she is a daughter, but once she becomes a daughter-in-law, she is expected to suppress her wishes and remain quiet.

Actor Javeria Saud posted a story stating, “Sirf susral nahin, har jagah par ankh, kan zuban sab khuley chor dein to zindagi sukoon se guzrey gi [You will lead a peaceful life if you keep eyes, ears and mouth open not just at your in-laws’ place but everywhere].”

Actor Hira Khan wrote on her Instagram story that, “Why she is allowed to speak on national television, I will never know. I feel sorry for her bahu [daughter-in-law].”

Social media users also criticised Faisal’s views.

One user asked, “Mil jul ker kr lain yar, kea masla ha [do it together, what’s the problem]?”

Another user commented, “Why is she spreading negativity?”

“It’s the bride’s big day! Let her decide [for] herself!” wrote another.

One user said, “Her views are so problematic.”

Second school blown up in Waziristan in less than a week

In the second assault of its kind on an educational facility in less than a week, a government girls’ primary school in the Mir Ali region of North Waziristan has been blown up.

According to the police, the attack took place in Epi village where assailants placed explosive material inside the school building during the night.

The explosion completely destroyed the structure, authorities said, confirming that the school was not in session at the time of the blast and no casualties were reported.

Government officials indicated that approximately 250 girls were enrolled at the school, which served as the sole educational establishment for girls in the vicinity. Students traveled from nearby areas to participate in classes at this institution.

According to the police, the explosion caused significant damage to government property and spread panic among residents. Law enforcement arrived at the scene shortly after, gathered evidence and initiated an investigation against unidentified suspects.

This attack follows the bombing of a government primary school in the same district just days earlier, impacting the education of over 600 students. The targeting of two schools in quick succession has raised alarm among parents and community members.

Reports quoted a local tribal elder as denouncing the attack.

“Targeting educational institutions is an attack on the future of the entire nation,” the local leader said, adding that the tribal community would not tolerate such acts.

He also urged the government to identify and arrest those responsible.

The district administration also condemned the incident and said security measures at educational institutions were being reviewed. “Attacks on educational institutions are unacceptable. Strict action will be taken against those responsible, and additional security arrangements are being implemented to protect schools,” officials said.

Parents and civil society members have called on authorities to ensure education continuity by reconstructing the affected school and bolstering security in the region.

Gold, millions in cheques recovered in Dr Warda murder case

Police in Abbottabad have recovered gold, bank cheques worth Rs12.3 million and other evidence in the abduction and murder case of Dr Warda Mushtaq, as investigators continue to piece together the sequence of events leading to her death.

The police reported that these findings were obtained from the spouse of the main suspect, Rida Jadoon, following revelations made by the suspects already in custody.

Authorities confiscated ten gold receipts, cheques worth Rs12.3 million, and the murder weapon, a rope. The recovery of these items occurred during raids as part of the investigation.

Dr. Warda, a medical officer at the District Headquarters Hospital in Abbottabad, was kidnapped from outside the hospital on December 4. Her body was discovered four days later in the Lari Binota area along Thandiani Road. Investigators have connected the case to a dispute regarding gold that Dr. Warda had entrusted to Rida for safekeeping two years prior to her death.

According to the police, Rida contacted Dr. Warda on the day of the incident and requested her to come and collect the gold. Investigators have stated that Dr. Warda was taken to an under-construction site in the Jinnahabad area, where she was strangled. The police indicated that she was killed within an hour of her abduction.

Abbottabad District Police Officer Haroon Rasheed mentioned that the postmortem examination revealed a fractured neck bone, with strangulation and suffocation identified as the cause of death.

Four individuals Rida, Nadeem and Pervaiz, and Rida’s husband Waheed had been arrested in connection with the case.

Another suspect, Shamraiz, was shot during a police operation earlier this week. Authorities indicated that he opened fire when officers tried to apprehend him. He got killed in the return fire. His body was transported to Ayub Medical Complex.

Shahid Afridi says he is happy with Faiz Hameed’s conviction

Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has welcomed the accountability of ex-ISI chief Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hameed, stating that anyone who harms the country should face justice.

Speaking to the media after an event in Karachi, Afridi said, “This is not really my domain, but it is a matter of happiness for me that Faiz Hameed and other officers are being held accountable.”

“It is encouraging that the Pakistan Army has started the accountability process from within. The military is mine and I am proud of it,” he added.

On the PSL’s new season featuring two additional franchises, the former captain said the expansion is welcome as it will provide opportunities to more players.

“PSL is our own brand and the road show proves its popularity,” he said.

Discussing future strategy, Afridi said, “Pakistan’s cricket team no longer needs more experiments and should finalize the squad for the World Cup.” He opposed changing players during the series before the global tournament.

A Field General Court Martial sentenced Faiz Hameed to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty on multiple charges, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported on December 11.

The court martial proceedings began on August 12, 2024, under the Pakistan Army Act and continued for 15 months.

ISPR said that the former spy master faced trial on four charges: engaging in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act in a manner detrimental to state safety and interests, misusing authority and government resources, and causing wrongful loss to individuals.

After what ISPR described as lengthy and laborious legal proceedings, the court found him guilty on all counts. The sentence took effect on December 11, 2025.

  • Sindh govt announces new film ‘Mera Lyari’ in response to Bollywood’s ‘Dhurandhar’

Sindh govt announces new film ‘Mera Lyari’ in response to Bollywood’s ‘Dhurandhar’

The Sindh government has announced the production of a new film titled ‘Mera Lyari’, positioning it as a response to the Indian movie Dhurandhar, which has faced criticism over its portrayal of Pakistan and Karachi’s Lyari neighbourhood.

Since its release, the Bollywood movie has faced criticism for portraying Lyari as a conflict-ridden area. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the portrayal was misleading and part of what he described as a broader narrative against Pakistan.

“Indian movie Dhurandhar is yet another example of negative propaganda by the Indian film industry against Pakistan, especially targeting Lyari. Lyari is not violence… it is culture, peace, talent and resilience. Next month, Mera Lyari will release, showing the true face of Lyari, which is about peace, prosperity and pride,” Memon said in a post on social media platform X.

Dhurandhar, which was released on December 5, drew mixed reactions in India and is loosely inspired by the gang war in Lyari from nearly two decades ago. While some viewers defended the film, others criticised its depiction, leading to debate within and without the country.

Viewers in Pakistan called the movie propaganda and also questioned why local filmmakers had not previously highlighted real stories that reflected the nation’s history and culture.

Memon, who also serves as Sindh’s information minister, claimed that Dhurandhar misrepresents Lyari, which he described as an area renowned for social harmony and cultural diversity.

He added that Mera Lyari, the Sindhi-language film, aims to present the neighbourhood’s reality to both domestic and international audiences.

Separately, a constitutional petition was filed in a Karachi court against Dhurandhar over the alleged unauthorised use of images of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) flag, and party rally footage in the film’s trailer.

Muhammad Amir, a PPP activist, submitted a petition to the District and Sessions Court (South), Karachi, seeking the registration of an FIR [First Information Report] against those involved in the film’s production and promotion.

  • Husband cannot face rape trial before legal completion of divorce: Lahore Court

Husband cannot face rape trial before legal completion of divorce: Lahore Court

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has determined that a husband cannot be charged with the rape of his wife unless the divorce is legally finalized under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance (MFLO) 1961.

This decision was made by Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh while considering a petition filed by Jameel Ahmad, who requested the dismissal of an FIR against him at Police Station City Liaqatpur under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertains to rape.

According to the FIR, the complainant claimed that Jameel Ahmad enticed her into living together and subsequently married her on April 22, 2024. Later, she claims, that she found out that he was already married. She claimed that when she confronted him, he divorced her on October 14, 2024.

The complainant said that on October 17, just three days after the divorce, the petitioner and another suspect entered her residence at night, during which the Jameel Ahmad sexually assaulted her at gunpoint.

Jameel Ahmad denied the claim of any live-in arrangement and claimed that the FIR was filed out of vengeance for the divorce. He acknowledged providing a written Talaq deed but contended that he retracted the divorce on December 23, 2024, during the 90-day reconciliation window mandated by law. He also informed the court of a pending petition for restitution of conjugal rights.

In his ruling, delivered at the LHC’s Bahawalpur bench, Justice Sheikh focused on whether the divorce was legally effective by October 17, 2024, the date the alleged incident took place.

The judge considered Islamic law in conjunction with the legal framework under Section 7 of the MFLO, noting that while Islamic law recognizes various forms of Talaq, Pakistani law is tied to a specified legal process.

According to Section 7 of the MFLO, a notice of Talaq must be submitted to the chairman of the respective union council, and a mandatory 90-day reconciliation period is required.

The judge pointed out that the divorce does not become effective unless this period elapses without revocation.

Justice Sheikh remarked that although the petitioner had sent a notice of Talaq to the union council, he had revoked it prior to the conclusion of the required period. Citing Supreme Court rulings, the judge asserted that failing to comply with statutory mandates renders a divorce legally invalid, even if a Talaqnama exists under Islamic law.

The court observed that under Section 7(3) of the MFLO, the parties remain legally married until the reconciliation period has lapsed or the Talaq is retracted.

Justice Sheikh concluded that on October 17, 2024, the marriage had not been dissolved in the eyes of the law. He indicated that while the petitioner’s actions might be considered immoral or inappropriate according to religious or social standards, prosecution under Section 376 could not proceed, as the essential elements of the offence were not established based solely on the FIR.

The court granted the petition and annulled the FIR filed against the petitioner.
