Pakistani rupee bounces back strongly after hitting all-time low of Rs300 against dollar

On Friday, the Pakistani rupee saw a significant recovery after hitting an all-time low of Rs300 against the US dollar the previous day. The local currency gained Rs12.43 per US dollar in the interbank market to trade at Rs286.50.

This recovery can be attributed to two major developments that occurred over the last few hours. Firstly, the currency gained strength as demand from importers decreased, following the release of oil payments a day earlier.

Secondly, the Supreme Court declared the arrest of Imran Khan, the Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), illegal and ordered his immediate release. These two developments, combined with an improved political situation, resulted in the sharp recovery of the rupee.

The demand for US dollars was high the previous day when the rupee hit an all-time low because imports had to retire their payments. However, the demand was relatively less on Friday, coupled with the improved political situation, which led to the sharp recovery.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme sparking default concerns, the currency market did not react negatively to Finance Minister Ishaq Dar’s press conference, where he claimed that Pakistan would not default even if there was no IMF programme.

‘Pakistan hai, to hum hain’: Shaheen Afridi changes DP to picture with Imran Khan

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Ex-Captain of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup victory Imran Khan got arrested on the May 9 from inside the Islamabad High Court.

Soon after his arrest, protests broke out across the country, resulting in clashes between followers of his party and law-enforcement agencies.

Along with being a politician, Imran Khan is also a former fast bowler, considered one of the greatest in the game.

His inspiration on many fast bowlers is quite evident, with his exceptional pace and ability to swing the ball both ways.

No second opinions, no disputes, and no doubts about the fact that Khan was one of the most prominent cricketers of his time.

Cricket fraternity has come out in support of Imran Khan with Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan’s ace fast bowler, changing his Twitter profile picture to one in which he is sitting with Khan.

“Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said,
‘Momino ki apas me aik dosre se mohabbat or hamdardi ki misaal aik jism ki tarah hai.
Jab uska koi hissa takleef me hota hai, to sara jism us takleef ko mehsoos kerta hai.’
Bus ye yad rakhna hai k Pakistan hai, to hum hain,” he wrote in a tweet.

First baby born in UK with DNA from three parents to combat incurable mitochondrial diseases

The fertility regulator in the United Kingdom (UK) has confirmed the birth of a baby using the DNA of three individuals for the first time. The majority of the baby’s genetic material comes from its two parents, with around 0.1 per cent coming from a donor woman.

This innovative technique is designed to prevent the birth of babies with mitochondrial diseases, which can be fatal within days or hours of birth and are incurable. Less than five babies have been born using this method, and no further information about them has been released.

Mitochondrial diseases are caused by defective mitochondria, which fail to generate energy and can lead to serious health problems, including brain damage, heart failure, and blindness. Mitochondria are inherited only from the mother, so this technique involves using healthy mitochondria from a donor egg to replace the affected mitochondria in the mother’s egg.

Mitochondrial donation treatment is a modified form of IVF, and there are two techniques for performing it. This method was pioneered in Newcastle, and laws were introduced to allow the creation of such babies in the UK in 2015. However, the first baby born using this technique was in the US to a Jordanian family in 2016.

The technique has been described as a permanent change that would be passed down through generations, but it only affects mitochondrial DNA and not other traits such as appearance, nor does it constitute a “third parent”. There is a risk of “reversion,” where any remaining defective mitochondria could still result in disease.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has confirmed the birth of fewer than five babies using mitochondrial donation treatment, but it has not provided any precise numbers to protect the families’ identities. This news is seen as a significant step in the cautious process of assessing and refining mitochondrial donation.

More information is needed to determine the success of this technique, and whether the babies are free of mitochondrial disease and at risk of developing health issues later in life.

  • Mobile data service suspension to cost Pakistan’s IT industry $3-4 million in daily losses

Mobile data service suspension to cost Pakistan’s IT industry $3-4 million in daily losses

The suspension of mobile data services in Pakistan is expected to result in a daily loss of $3-4 million to the country’s IT exports.

The Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) has called on the government to restore mobile broadband services, which have been suspended since Tuesday due to the political turmoil that erupted after the arrest of the PTI party’s chairman, Imran Khan.

The government has blocked 3G/4G mobile broadband services and major social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, as well as slowing down YouTube services to control the spread of “unwanted information” that could cause disinformation and panic among the masses.

According to The News, Muhammad Zohaib Khan, the Chairman of P@SHA, warned that the suspension of mobile broadband services could result in significant losses for the IT industry, which relies heavily on internet connectivity.

The IT industry has come to a standstill since Tuesday evening, and professionals are working from home due to the precarious law and order situation in the entire country. Zohaib urged the government to resume internet services to the IT industry immediately, saying that the sudden blockade of broadband services has completely halted IT operations, and the IT industry is already facing pressure due to poor governmental policies.

Zohaib requested Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to intervene directly and asked for the support of the Ministry of IT and Telecom, Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), and Tech Destination Pakistan administrations to request the premier to issue categorical instructions.

The suspension of mobile broadband services has also affected individuals who rely on digital apps for commuting or ordering/delivering food and other products. However, an official stated that it is difficult to calculate the losses at this stage.

  • India wants the whole Asia Cup tournament shifted to Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka agrees

India wants the whole Asia Cup tournament shifted to Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka agrees

Sri Lanka is now one of the strongest contenders to host Asia Cup 2023 as the recent meeting of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee Chairman with the Vice-President of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Pankhaj Khimji seems to have not gone as well as was expected.

According to a report, PCB Chief Najam Sethi met with ACC officials on Tuesday, May 9, where it was decided that Pakistan would pull out of the tournament because their proposal of hosting it in the UAE was not accepted.

Asia Cup is scheduled for September this year, but the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, who is also the President of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had threatened that the Indian government would not allow their team to travel to Pakistan because of security concerns.

Regardless of the current political crisis in Pakistan, the country has just concluded a New Zealand series in peace. Yet Indian media and BCCI officials have based their decision to not send their team to Pakistan on security concerns.

In the recent meeting with Jay Shah and ACC officials, Najam Sethi proposed a revised ‘Hybrid Model’ in which four teams Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh will play their matches in Pakistan and then all the teams along with Pakistan will move to Dubai to play the whole tournament.

ACC officials straight away rejected the proposal by raising questions about logistics, asking how broadcasters will travel between the two countries with all the crew and equipment.

Sethi reply was that they only had to travel to Pakistan only once and then will go to Dubai.

ACC officials said that ahead of World Cup they cannot take the risk and that weather conditions are not suitable in Dubai for playing cricket.
Sethi reportedly pointed out that the BCCI held IPL 2020 in Dubai and also in the same season.

An ultimatum on the matter is expected by the end of this month. Should the decision go against Pakistan, the country’s status as a participant in the Cup would be up in the air, with a boycott being likely in that event.

‘Storm the British Council, solve papers forcefully’: Students disappointed over Cambridge exams cancellation

Considering the current rioting on the streets, the Punjab Boards Committee of Chairmen yesterday (Wednesday) decided to “postpone” board exams of class 9, scheduled to be held on May 11 and 12 till further notice.

The British Council has also cancelled Cambridge exams scheduled for today (Thursday).

Students and their parents are disappointed at the cancellation of the exams.

“Our grades will be affected badly,” said one student while talking to Dawn.

Another disappointed student said that she did not celebrate Eid because she was preparing for the exams.

“We are working here day and night for a bright future and here we were just engulfed by darkness because of the ‘situation’ in our country,” said another student.

One of the O level students suggested to his friend on social media that they should go to the British Council and solve the paper forcefully.

    Reaction of Parents:

One parent said that her daughter had worked very hard the entire year but both her major science subjects’ papers got cancelled. Another parent said that it would affect a student’s future, especially if science or medicine were her major career goals.

  • Gold price increases to Rs240,000 per tola amid political turmoil and IMF loan delay

Gold price increases to Rs240,000 per tola amid political turmoil and IMF loan delay

On Wednesday, the price of gold surged massively in Pakistan due to political turmoil following the arrest of the former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, Imran Khan.

According to the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association (APSGJA), the price of gold (24 carats) rose by Rs9,900 per tola and Rs8,487 per 10 grams to reach Rs240,000 and Rs205,761, respectively.

However, there was no increase in the international market price, which remained at $2,031 per ounce. The primary reason for the increase in gold’s price is the latest political storm that has caused violent protests across the country and led to the army’s deployment in three provinces.

People in Pakistan are purchasing gold to protect themselves against inflation and currency depreciation, as the economy is already in dire straits. Furthermore, the delay in the revival of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, which negatively impacts the currency market, is bolstering the demand for gold.

According to Brecorder, the rupee also fell to a fresh low of Rs290.22 against the US dollar in the interbank market on Wednesday, after losing Rs5.38 or 1.89 per cent. The APSGJA also reported that the price of silver reached a new high, rising by Rs100 per tola and Rs85.75 per 10 grams to settle at Rs3,100 and Rs2,657.7, respectively.

Bilawal advises PTI to end violent protests

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said on Thursday that one attack on General Headquarters of the Army (GHQ) was carried out by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and now another one has been carried out by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Addressing a press conference, the Foreign Minister referred to violent acts of PTI workers, pointing out that this is not the first time that they have violated the law. “I had warned earlier that you people are creating Altaf Hussain in Punjab,” said Bilawal.

He continued by adding that Imran Khan believes that he can cross every red line and the law is only applicable on others.

The PPP head advised PTI to not make “matters worse [and] call for an end to violent protests and declare that you will abide by the rule of law and Constitution.”

Bilawal said that he is principally against banning any political party but said that “such decisions are made in view of the circumstances”.
If such a decision is taken, he continued, “it would be taken because there would be no other choice left.”

    PM’s address to the nation:

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif in an address to the nation on Thursday termed damaging public property an “act of terrorism” and “enmity” towards the country.

In a short address, the premier said that he would like to warn “terrorists” who are harming the country to stop, otherwise strict actions will be taken against them.

Sharif was referring to PTI supporters who are protesting against the arrest of party head Imran Khan.

PM also recalled his party members’ arrests, adding that “revengeful acts in politics never renders good results”.

He also added that “all evidence” has been accumulated in the Al-Qadir Trust case against PTI Chairman Imran Khan, who is now under NAB custody for the next eight days.

  • Miami girl shifts to Hunza, says its more comfortable than ‘toxic’ America

Samantha Shea, a Miami native, has penned a loving essay about her adopted home Hunza, saying that her quality of life here is infinitely better.

“I save thousands each month compared with living in a US city, and my quality of life is infinitely better,” Shea wrote for Business Insider.

Stating that she finds American hustling culture “toxic”, Shea said that the people in Hunza are generally polite and respectful.

“I breathe clean air and eat organic, home-cooked food for every meal,” she writes.

Shea writes that people from back home think Pakistan is a desert, and she herself didn’t know much about it before travelling to the country after college.

When she first came to Pakistan in 2019, she had never lived outside of the US.

“In Hunza, electricity comes on for only a few hours a day, you walk to the local market if you need anything – Amazon doesn’t deliver to the mountainous valley region – and running hot water isn’t guaranteed,” she says.

However she writes that the valley is now her home:
“Here, I don’t lock up my bike or my front door, I can walk everywhere, and my recent major home renovation cost me only $3,000.”

And though she travelled to Pakistan from India, she says she found it easier to travel here.

“I found it easier and more fun to travel here than in India, a much more ‘mainstream’ backpacking destination. I encountered fewer scammers traveling in Pakistan. I also found Pakistan had less trash on the streets, and the roads were in better condition.”

Samantha, who is now a travel blogger, says she has learnt Urdu and is now learning Burushaski, one of the two major languages spoken in Hunza.
