  • Man vandalised Hindu temple, charged with blasphemy

    On Monday, a man named Waleed Muhammad Shabeer, who allegedly damaged idols of a Hindu temple in the old area of Narainpura, was booked under Blasphemy Law by the police. Another attacker escaped from the scene. He is booked under section 427 (mischief) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and section 295 of the PPC that deals with blasphemy.

    According to the first information report (FIR), the incident took place at 6:15 pm.

    The complainant and a resident of the area, Mukesh Kumar, said that his wife saw the assailant attacking the idols with a hammer.

    The suspect was surrounded by the people living in the area. The residents handed him over to the police. The residents also protested in the area and in front of the police station.

    They demanded security from the government after the incident took place and chanted slogans against the attackers.

    Narainpur is an old town where Hindu families are predominately living with Muslims.

    Sindh Minister for Minority Affairs, Gyanchand Israni, instructed the police to arrest all accused and said that such incidents would bring unrest in society. “We condemn such attacks,” he said.

    The motive behind the attack is not determined yet. Police have started an investigation and assured the protection for residents of the area.

    The video of broken holy idols was circulating on social media.

    Various activists and politicians condemned the vandalism and requested the government to capture all people included in the attack.

    Pakistan cricket team’s power hitter Fakhar Zaman teased speedster Haris Rauf after pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi was appointed as captain of Lahore Qalandars in the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

    Taking to Twitter, the batter congratulated Shaheen and wrote: “Many congratulations Shaheen Afridi long way to go super star.”

    He also warned Rauf, saying: “Haris Rauf ab koi ghalti na karna match ma. (Haris Rauf don’t make any mistake in the match from now onwards.)”

    Replying to Fakhar, Rauf said: “kuch ni kehta mujhay full yakeen hai apnay skipper par. (He will not say anything, I have full trust in my skipper.)”

    While he also extended good wishes to Shaheen for the appointment. “Best wishes and Best of luck buddy,” he wrote.

    Shaheen tweeted that it is an honour for him to lead Lahore Qalandars. He also pledged to win the hearts and the trophy as well.

    The franchise made the announcement in a press conference at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore on Monday. Afridi has replaced Sohail Akhtar, who was the captain of the team since 2018.

    Several people from the cricket fraternity congratulated the 21-year-old cricketer. Hassan Ali also took to Twitter to congratulate his “partner”.

    The seventh edition of PSL will start on January 27.

    Matches from January 27- February 7 will be played at the National Stadium, Karachi, whereas the remaining fixtures will take place at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore with the final set to take place on February 27.

    The actor turned politician MP (Member of Parliament) Jaya Bachchan lost her cool in the Rajya Sabha (Senate) over alleged personal remarks against her in the house.

    In the video, Bachchan is seen involved in a verbal spat with the treasury benches. She even accused the chair of not listening to the Opposition and favouring the government.

    She alleged that personal remarks were made against her. She argued, “How can they make personal remarks in the House? Aap logon kay burey din aayenge (Your bad days will come soon), I curse you.”

    Later, Jugal Lokhandwala, one of the treasury bench MP who apparently made the personal remark told NDTV that he had meant the whole Opposition when he said, “You will not do drama”.

    While pointing out the chair presided by Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Bhubaneswar Kalita, Bachchan said, “I don’t want to thank you because I don’t know whether I should remember when you used to walk shouting or today when you are sitting in the chair.”

    Samajwadi Party (SP) leader’s remarks came after she was asked to participate in the discussion on the ‘Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances’ Amendment Bill 2021.

    When the ruling party lawmaker Rakesh Sinha objected to Bachchan’s remarks against the Chair, things escalated.

    The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)  faced a major upset on multiple seats in the first phase of local government (LG) elections held in Khyber Pakhtun­khwa (KP) at the hands of Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).

    JUI-F’s Zubair Ali won the race with 62,388 votes while PTI’s Rizwan Bangash was second with 50,659 votes.

    In Mardan, Awami National Party’s (ANP) Himayatullah Mayar won the seat with 56,458 votes while JUI-F’s Amanat Shah Haqqani was in second place with 49,938 votes.

    Sher Zaman of JUI-F won the mayor seat with 34,434 votes and independent candidate Shafiullah Jan was in second place with 25,793 votes.

    Actor Zahid Ahmed has talked about the importance of mental health in an Instagram post.

    The Daldal star took to his Instagram story to share a picture with the text, “Mental Health is probably, the same as cancer if not worse. Strikes in stealth and is destructive,” the post read.

    The Mein Na Janoo hero stated in an interview earlier, “I use social media as much as I need to.” He said he mostly uses Instagram. “I am well aware of the importance of speak with thoughtfulness. So, I try not to make any statement that would cause me to be mentioned in issues other than my work,” he said.

    According to the actor, “If someone wants too much fame, then they would make statements without thoughtfully. If someone isn’t looking for publicity, then he would speak thoughtfully.” Ahmed continued, “There are all kinds of artists in the industry. Some people like to be in the news, while some people don’t, they have their own preferences.”

    On the work front, Zahid Ahmed will soon be seen in Saba Qamar starrer Ghabrana Nai Hai. The movie also features Syed Jibran. It will be released on Eidulfitr 2022.

    Indian state Maharashtra’s minister of water supply and sanitation Gulabrao Patil has come under fire for his recent comment on Member of Parliament and actor Hema Malini.

    As per reports, the minister while talking about development in his constituency of Jalgaon compared the smooth roads to the veteran actress’ cheeks.

    Hema Malini called out the minister for his comment and said his comments were not in good taste. She also took a dig at Lalu Yadav while reacting. Speaking to ANI, Hema Malini said, “A trend of such statements was started by Lalu Ji years ago and many people have followed this trend. Such comments are not in a good taste.” 

    MP Hema Malini further added, “One should not do this. If normal people are talking such things, you cannot adjust that, but if a Member of Parliament or anybody connected to our constituency (says), I don’t think it is in good taste. Any woman should not be used for saying such things.” 

    The minister Gulabrao Patil issued an apology, stating that he did not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings. 

    On the work front, the Baghban star has currently stopped signing films due to her political career.

    Earlier, Earlier in 2005, Lalu Prasad Yadav received backlash when he had promised to make Bihar’s roads as smooth as Hema Malini’s cheeks. Madhya Pradesh law minister PC Sharma brought back the analogy in 2019 when he said the state’s pothole-ridden roads would soon be made “pretty” like the Dream Girl star’s cheeks.

    Recently the Rajasthan’s Minister Rajendra Singh Gudha has courted controversy after saying that roads in his constituency should be made like “Katrina Kaif’s cheeks”.

    Attacking the minister over his bizarre comments, BJP spokesperson Ram Lal Sharma said, “Giving such a statement about women is indecent. The Chief Minister should take strict action. Culture and tradition of Rajasthan have not been such that a person sitting on a constitutional post gives such a statement.”

    Dharmendra and Hema Malini met for the first time when they were shooting for the film Tum Haseen Main Jawan, and they both were playing leading roles in the movie, and reportedly they both fell in love during the shoot of the movie.

    At that time Dharmendra was married to Prakash Kaur with whom he has sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.     Pakistan’s Test opener Abid Ali has been taken to the hospital after he suffered pain around his chest during a Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match in Karachi.

    As per reports, the 34-year-old cricketer was rushed to a hospital after he complained of chest pain during the match played at UBL Sports Complex.

    Abid Ali has undergone a number of medical examinations and is currently under observation.

    Abid is representing Central Punjab in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

    The right-arm batter helped Pakistan comfortably chase down a 202-run target to beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the first Test in the two-match Test series. Abid, who hit 133 in the first innings, struck 12 boundaries and scored 91 off 148 deliveries in the second innings.

    He also contributed in the second Test match and bagged Player of the Series award for his outstanding performance.

    Meanwhile, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Abid is stable and presently undergoing various tests to diagnose the exact nature of the pain. He had retired hurt on 61.

    As per further details shared by PCB, he was diagnosed as a case of Acute Coronary Syndrome. He is under the care of Consultant Cardiologist who is liaising with PCB medical team regarding further treatment. He is currently stable.

    Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Tuesday said his party “made mistakes” as he pinned the blame of the poor performance of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on “wrong candidate selection” for the first phase of local government (LG) elections held in Khyber Pakhtun­khwa (KP).

    PM Khan tweeted, “PTI made mistakes in 1st phase of KP LG elections & paid the price. Wrong candidate selection was a major cause.”

    Making sure that the same mistake is not repeated, the premier added, “From now on I will personally be overseeing PTI’s LG election strategy in 2nd phase of KP LG elections & LG elections across Pak.”

    Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Shehbaz Sharif said that the people residing in the KP districts have rejected the ruling party.

    “The ruling party’s defeat is an expression of people’s anger over the back-breaking inflation, crushing price hike & the meltdown of governance,” said Shehbaz Sharif in a tweet.

    “It is the beginning of the end of an experiment that has cost the nation dearly.”

    PM’s remarks come after the Opposition parties have had a combined lead over the ruling PTI in the local body elections.

    The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, condemned domestic violence against women as ‘almost Satanic’ during a programme on the national TV channel of Italy named TG5 network on Sunday evening. It is one of the strongest languages he has ever used on any issue.

    He was speaking to panelists belonging to difficult backgrounds, including a survivor of domestic abuse. In the programme, issues such as domestic violence, poverty, and economic impact on citizens due to the pandemic were discussed.

    The Pope expressed his serious concern about a very high number of women who faced abuse and were beaten in their homes.

    He said, “The problem is that, for me, it is almost satanic because it is taking advantage of a person who cannot defend herself, who can only [try to] block the blows.”

    He added, “It is humiliating. Very humiliating.”

    He spoke these words to the survivor of domestic abuse, Giovanna, who shared her experience of escaping from a violent home with her four children.

    He added encouraging words by saying that women who suffered abuse do not lose their dignity.

    He told Giovanna, “I see dignity in you because if you didn’t have dignity, you wouldn’t be here.”

    While addressing the survivor, he urged to keep hope alive even during the pandemic.

    He added a supporting comment, “You are giving an example of resistance, a lesson of resistance to calamities,” he said. “You are coming out better than before.”
