GB tourism faces 90 percent decline amid climate disasters, conflicts: Report

Unprecedented climate disasters coupled with other challenges have triggered a steep decline in tourism to Gilgit-Baltistan this year, leaving the local economy reeling.

Officials revealed that international conflicts, natural calamities, and related issues have caused a 90 percent drop in tourist inflows to the region.

Only 270 foreign climbers came this year to attempt peaks including K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum-I, Gasherbrum-II, and Nanga Parbat, according to Sajid Hussain, assistant director at the GB Tourism Department.

This is a significant decrease from the more than 2,000 foreign trekkers and climbers who visited last year.

He emphasized that many climbers were unable to accomplish their objectives due to severe weather conditions at the peaks. They were forced to stop their expeditions and stay in base camps before going home due to avalanches, rockfalls, and powerful winds.

According to department figures, 40 climbers made it to the top of K2 this season, 25 made it to Nanga Parbat, and about a dozen managed to climb Gasherbrum-I.

Iqbal Hussain, director at the GB Tourism Department, told an English daily that last year 24,000 foreign tourists without permits visited the region, along with one million domestic travelers. “This year, the situation is alarming as tourist arrivals, both international and domestic, have declined by 90 percent,” he said.

According to tour operator Asghar Ali Porik, several factors were behind the drastic reduction in foreign adventure tourists. “The legal battle between the GB Tourism Department and tour operators over the hike in permit fees, the Iran-Israel conflict, tensions between Pakistan and India, and unpredictable weather conditions at peaks compelled many foreign climbers and trekkers to cancel their plans,” he noted.

The slump has also left small businesses along the Karakoram Highway struggling. A tea stall owner said, “I have never experienced such a situation where you can go the whole day without a single client and return home empty-handed.”

Hotel owners, shopkeepers, transporters, porters, and tour operators are facing similar losses.Gilgit Looms owner Haider Abbas claimed that his business had suffered greatly. He went on to say that despite having spent billions of rupees, he was now having trouble paying staff salaries and shop rent.

‘Life is first come, first served’: Polish CEO defends snatching hat from child

A shocking moment at the US Open turned into a viral scandal when Polish CEO Piotr Szczerek grabbed a cap that tennis player Kamil Majchrzak gave to a young boy, and later brazenly defended his actions.

A viral video shows Szczerek quickly taking the hat before a child named Brock could receive it. The clip spread across social media, causing outrage after chalking up millions of views.

After the backlash, Majchrzak reached out to Brock, met him in person, and gave him an autographed hat. The player shared the moment on Instagram, saying he did not realize the boy missed out and wanted to make things right.

Szczerek, however, refused to apologize. In a post on GoWork, he wrote, “The recent incident at the tennis match has caused a disproportionate online uproar. It’s all about the famous hat, of course. Yes, I took it. Yes, I did it quickly. But as I’ve always said, life is first come, first served.”

He added, “It’s just a hat. If you were faster, you would have it… In the end, chin up, hats off, less venom, more sportsmanship.”

His comments fueled more anger online. People flooded his company Drogbruk’s page with negative reviews, dropping its rating to 1.4 stars.

Hundreds of comments calling him out were posted on the forum, claiming the CEO is a “thief”, “embarrassing” among more colorful language. All of his social media has since been deleted.

Since the early 2000s, Lakki Marwat has been subjected to violence and terrorism. Despite a period of relative peace brought about by security measures, militant activity has increased recently, raising concerns of renewed instability.

Earlier this month, militants carried out multiple attacks in the district, killing three soldiers and a woman, while injuring three others, including two soldiers. On August 13, police reported that a gas pipeline in Lakki Marwat had been blown up by terrorists, suspending supply to Punjab.

Ganda Singh Wala continues to witness exceptionally high flood as Sindh braces for ‘super flood’

Punjab’s Ganda Singh Wala on the Sutlej River continues to witness an “exceptionally high” flood, while Balloki on Ravi and Trimmu on the Chenab also record a “very high” flood level.

According to the Flood Forecasting Division’s (FFD) data, the outflows at Ganda Singh Wala were 253,068 cusecs and “steady”, while those at Trimmu were over 550,000 cusecs and “rising”.

Death toll rises to 33 due to flood in Punjab

As many as 33 people have lost their lives and eight others were injured, driven by high floods in the Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers from Aug 23 to 31, said the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

According to the PDMA, 2,066,785 people of 2,222 mouzas were affected, and 506 relief camps were established to provide shelter to 10,654 people in the province. At least 352 medical camps were established, in which 17,853 people were treated.

The rescue teams evacuated 760,424 people and 516,258 animals and transported them to safe locations. Veterinary services are being provided through 331 camps.

Meanwhile, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, while addressing the media alongside Climate Change Minister Dr. Musadik Malik, said that recent rains and flash floods have claimed 850 lives and left more than 1,150 people injured across the country.

The NDMA chief said that over 600,000 people were relocated to safer areas during the flooding, and thousands of livestock were also rescued across the country.

Malik further stated that the final monsoon spell is expected in the first 10 days of September, with heavy rainfall likely in eastern Punjab, Azad Kashmir and nearby regions

    Sindh braces for ‘super flood’

Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah said the provincial government had devised a comprehensive plan to deal with the looming “super flood”.

Speaking to media on Sunday during his visit to Sukkur and Guddu barrages, he stated that inflows from Trimmu would reach Sindh in about five days via Panjnad.

Shah said that in 2010, inflows of 1.1 million cusecs had passed from the Guddu Barrage. “This time, even 900,000 to one million cusecs would be extremely challenging. If inflows remain limited, losses will be manageable, but crops may still not survive,” he added.

The chief minister maintained that the provincial government’s foremost priority was to protect human lives and livestock, followed by safeguarding the Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri barrages.

Highlighting that Sindh’s terrain poses greater risks than Punjab’s, he explained, “In Punjab, designated breaches allow water to return quickly to the river. But Sindh lies below river level, so once water spreads, it does not recede easily.”

  • Liverpool sign Alexander Isak in record £130m transfer from Newcastle

Liverpool sign Alexander Isak in record £130m transfer from Newcastle

Premier League champions Liverpool have completed a sensational deal to sign Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a British record fee of £130 million.

The 25-year-old will undergo a medical before signing a six-year contract with the Reds. The transfer fee surpasses the previous record of £116 million that Liverpool paid for Florian Wirtz earlier this summer.

Isak joins Liverpool after an outstanding season with Newcastle, where he scored 23 Premier League goals and cemented his reputation as one of the league’s top strikers. His exit had been expected in recent weeks after he voiced frustration with the club, posting on Instagram that “promises were broken.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe later admitted that selling Isak might be necessary to comply with Profit and Sustainability Regulations following their own big-money signing of German forward Nick Woltemade.

For Liverpool, this is another major statement in a summer of heavy investment. Along with Isak, the champions have added Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez to their squad. The team has started the new season strong, winning all three of their opening matches.

‘We are not copying you’; Viral reporter from Bhai Bhai Channel tells BBC

A young reporter whose unorthodox reports have gone viral on social media has addressed the confusion surrounding the name of her channel which is shown on her mic as ‘BBC Urdu News Punjab TV’, hours after the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) issued a statement warning audiences to beware of impostors.

In a video statement posted on the internet in the wee hours of Saturday, Mehrunnisa held the same mic, saying her channel’s name is an abbreviation for Bhai Bhai Channel.

“As you can see, BBC UK walay has uploaded a post on X. Their channel’s abbreviation is British Broadcasting Corporation, while ours stands for Bhai Bhai Channel. You can directly talk to us via email. We are not copying you,” she addressed the allegations.

In its statement, originally in Urdu, BBC wrote, “It has come to our attention that a digital media company called BBC Urdu News Punjab TV is operating in Pakistan using the BBC’s name.”

The BBC stated that it has no connection with BBC Urdu Punjab TV or its reporter Mehrunnisa, adding that the organisation has not been authorised to use the BBC’s name in this manner.

“We request BBC audiences to verify the presence of any content published under the BBC’s name on the BBC’s official platforms before trusting it.”

After her report on the visit of the Iranian President to Lahore went viral, Mehrunnisa once again became the rage on social media for her coverage of Lahore’s flood-affected suburb Shahdara, where she boarded a boat wearing a rescue jacket alongside rescue officials.

“As you can see, the water pressure is rising; we are so scared, the boat is shifting to one side then to another, we can’t balance,” the reporter was heard saying. She signed off with a plea that was nothing short of iconic, “Please just pray for us guys.”

  • Ducky Bhai challenges physical remand extension in gambling apps case

Ducky Bhai challenges physical remand extension in gambling apps case

YouTuber Saadur Rehman, popularly known as Ducky Bhai, has filed an appeal against a Lahore judicial magistrate’s decision to extend his physical remand to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in a case involving the promotion of illegal online gambling apps.

The appeal, submitted on Saturday through his lawyer Ch Usman Ali, was accepted for hearing by a sessions court, which issued a notice to the NCCIA and sought a response on Monday.

In his petition, Ducky Bhai argues that the magistrate failed to properly examine the facts before approving the remand extension and has requested the court to declare the order null and void.

The YouTuber has been in NCCIA custody since his arrest on August 17. On August 28, the magistrate extended his remand until September 1. He was arrested at Lahore airport after a case was filed against him under sections 13 (Electronic Forgery), 14 (Electronic Fraud), 25 (Spamming), and 26 (Spoofing) of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, along with sections 294-B (Offering prize in connection with trade) and 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The case stems from a June 13 inquiry based on “reliable sources” alleging that YouTubers and social media influencers were promoting gambling and betting apps for monetary gain through their social media platforms.

Separately, the court granted an extension in pre-arrest bail to Ducky Bhai’s wife, Aroob Jatoi, until September 15. The sessions court barred the NCCIA from arresting her in the same case and ordered the agency to submit a detailed investigation report at the next hearing.

Aroob sought bail after receiving an NCCIA inquiry notice, expressing fear of arrest. She stated in her appeal that she was willing to cooperate and appear for questioning. This marks her second bail request; the court granted the first on August 21, after which she appeared before investigators.
