Police uncover key clues in Humaira Asghar’s death case

Major developments have emerged in Humaira Asghar’s case as police further probe into her personal data and contacts.

The actress was found dead in her flat in Karachi’s Defence Phase 6 on July 8. Latest media reports, citing police officials, reveal that electronic devices used by the actress, including three mobile phones, a tablet, and a laptop, have been unlocked, and their data is now being analysed. The passwords for all these devices were discovered written in her personal diary.

According to investigators, statements of two people linked to the case have already been recorded, while two more individuals have been summoned for questioning.

Early findings indicate that Humaira would go to the gym regularly and stay in touch with a beautician. Police added that they will contact her gym trainer and other relevant people to push the investigation forward.

Officers are also reviewing her bank account details and analysing communication records to identify any potential links with close connections.

Humaira Asghar’s body was brought from Karachi and laid to rest in Lahore.

  • Arshad Nadeem, Neeraj Chopra to face off twice this year

Arshad Nadeem, Neeraj Chopra to face off twice this year

Pakistani Olympic gold medalist and star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem will face India’s Olympian Neeraj Chopra once again next month, marking their first head-to-head clash in a year.

Both athletes are set to compete in the Diamond League in Poland on August 16, their first meeting since the Paris Olympics, where Arshad delivered a stunning performance to win gold ahead of Neeraj.

After Poland, Arshad will also take part in the Diamond League in Zurich, Switzerland, at the end of August, where another possible face-off with Neeraj could take place on August 27.

Following recent military clashes between Pakistan and India, Arshad avoided commenting on questions related to Neeraj Chopra.

Recently, Arshad declined Neeraj Chopra’s invitation to participate in an event in India, citing training commitments.

Meanwhile, Neeraj faced backlash at home for inviting his Pakistani rival despite strained relations between the two countries.

Army chief has never expressed desire to become president: PM

Earlier reports suggesting that President Asif Ali Zardari was asked to step down and that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir intended to assume the presidency have been dismissed as “mere speculation” by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Speaking to The News, PM Shehbaz clarified that there was no truth to the reports circulating in the media.

Media reports suggest that it all started with a couple of journalists “revealing” on social media that a plan was underway to remove Zardari from the Presidency for allegedly leaking the specific meeting conversation regarding the plan to build new Canals from the Indus River.

Others claim the rumours began circulating after the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) obtained a simple majority in the National Assembly (NA) after the reinstatement of reserved seats by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) following the top court’s Constitutional Bench verdict.

“Field Marshal Asim Munir has never expressed any desire to become the president, nor is there any such plan in the offing,” The News quoted the premier as saying.

He emphasised that the trio of President Zardari, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and himself share a relationship built on mutual respect and a common goal, the progress and prosperity of Pakistan.

This comes days after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had also firmly rebuffed such rumours.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Naqi wrote that “we are fully aware” of who is behind the “malicious campaign” targeting the president, the premier and the army chief.

“I have categorically stated that there has been no discussion, nor does any such idea exist, about the President being asked to resign or the COAS aspiring to assume the presidency,” he clarified.

Naqvi underscored that the President enjoys a strong and respectful relationship with the Armed Forces’ leadership. “I know who is spreading these falsehoods, why they are doing so, and who stands to benefit from this propaganda,” he quoted Zardari as saying.

The interior minister emphasised that the sole focus of the COAS is the strength and stability of Pakistan, “nothing else”.

“To those involved in this narrative, do whatever you wish in collaboration with hostile foreign agencies. As for us, we will do whatever is necessary to make Pakistan strong again, InshAllah (sic),” he said.

Umar Akmal regrets choosing Pakistan over T20 leagues

Middle-order batsman Umar Akmal’s complicated relationship with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) continues to strain, as the batter, once tipped to be Pakistan’s next superstar, has once again criticised the governing body.

Speaking to the media on Friday, the 35-year-old said he deeply regrets choosing Pakistan over a lucrative T20 league career. “International cricket was always my first priority. I left big leagues to serve Pakistan but today I regret those decisions,” Umar said.

He expressed regret over what he described as repeated and unexplained discrimination by the PCB, particularly its consistent refusal to grant him No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to play in overseas leagues. “I don’t know who at the PCB thinks I shouldn’t play cricket, but I have suffered in silence again and again,” he said.

Umar Akmal recalled the time when a delayed NOC nearly cost him an entire league season, adding to his financial and mental struggles. He has now applied for another NOC to play in an ICC-approved league in Switzerland, but says the PCB has yet to respond.

Expressing his frustration, he said, “If the league wasn’t legitimate, why would I even apply? I followed the process. What more do they want?”

If his latest application is rejected again, Umar is prepared to take legal action. “If this continues, I will go to court. I’m not done yet. I have many years left in me and I deserve the same opportunities others get,” he said.

Umar Akmal, who last played for Pakistan in 2019, remains one of the country’s most recognised T20 players. A seasoned name in leagues like the PSL, BPL, CPL and the Champions League T20, he has scored 5,839 runs in 279 matches at a strike rate of 131, with 34 fifties and a century. For Pakistan, he made 1,690 runs in 84 T20 internationals at a strike rate of 122.73, with eight fifties to his name.

But after years of stop-start setbacks with the PCB, he admits that putting Pakistan ahead of personal gain may have cost him far more than he ever imagined.

  • Mob attack on Ahmadi worship place foiled by police

Mob attack on Ahmadi worship place foiled by police

Lahore police on Friday reportedly foiled a mob attack on a worship place of the Ahmadi community in the city’s Samanabad.

A strong contingent of force from several police stations reportedly responded to the emergency 15 call from the community when local residents were about to advance towards the Ahmadi worship place.

“Six SHOs, a DSP, a divisional SP and an SSP rushed to the site along with armed policemen on the direction of Lahore Operations DIG Faisal Kamran to rescue members of the Ahmadi community at any cost,” Dawn News quoted a police officer as saying, adding that women and children were also among the worshippers.

As the mob reportedly attempted to siege the worship place, the police launched a major operation, rescuing women, children and other worshippers, shifting them to a secured area and increased security of the worship place. Police high-ups also engaged known local figures, including religious leaders, to maintain peace.

Dawn News quoted an Ahmadi worshipper as reporting that his community had built a worship place on Poonch Road and got it registered with the relevant government department, adding that during prayers, they [Ahmadi] heard some slogans outside, which frightened the community.

“I also rushed out of the worship place using the back door, left my motorbike unattended and ran to avoid a possible attack,” the Ahmadi worshipper added.

He further said that he witnessed many charged people gathering on the road, calling people to reach the site hurriedly, adding they seemed to be members of a religious party hurling serious threats and demanding closure of the Ahmadi worship place.

Moreover, the worshipper said that the protesters had accused the Ahmadi community of violating the time schedule of worship on Friday. However, dismissing the charge, he said that they were following the given schedule.

Citing DIG operations, Dawn News said the police managed to thwart the possible mob attack on the Ahmadi worship place.

Kamran confirmed that protestors gathered outside the Ahmadi worship place were members of a religious-cum-political party pressing for a change in Ahmadi worship timing.

  • Humaira Asghar’s father breaks silence at daughter’s funeral

Humaira Asghar’s father breaks silence at daughter’s funeral

The father of actress Humaira Asghar has spoken publicly for the first time.

Humaira Asghar, who was found dead in her apartment in Karachi’s Defence Phase 6, was laid to rest in Lahore on Friday, where her father briefly spoke to the media during her funeral.

When asked by a journalist why he had not been in touch with his daughter for nine months and what he thought of the post-mortem report, Humaira’s father said, “I don’t know anything about this, all this information is with my son. I don’t even have a smartphone; I only keep a simple phone.”

He also denied reports claiming the family refused to receive Humaira’s body. “None of us ever refused to claim Humaira’s body. The medical process was not complete yet, and the body can only be handed over to the family once that’s done,” he said.

When asked if there should be an investigation into his daughter’s death, Humaira’s father looked towards the sky and said, “Whatever Allah wills, that is what will happen.”

Meanwhile, Humaira’s cousin told the media that her father had been in their village, grieving his sister’s death just days before the news, which is why he was out of touch.

Humaira Asghar’s body was discovered on July 8 in a flat at Ittehad Commercial when a court bailiff arrived to evict her over unpaid rent. After repeated knocks went unanswered, the door was forced open, revealing the decomposed body.

According to the initial post-mortem report, the body was in the final stage of decomposition, suggesting that the actress had died about nine months ago. The report noted that the flesh from the lower part of her body had completely deteriorated and the corpse had begun to attract insects.

Earlier, reports circulated that her family had refused to come to Karachi to claim her body. However, her remains were eventually handed over to her family, and she was laid to rest in Lahore on Friday with significant media coverage at the funeral.

Meanwhile, social media users have noted the absence of people from the entertainment industry at Humaira’s funeral.

  • Govt looks to invite more satellite-based internet firms

Govt looks to invite more satellite-based internet firms

The launch of satellite-based internet services in Pakistan has been delayed as authorities seek to attract more players to the sector and introduce stricter regulations for foreign satellite operators, following the Pakistan-India conflict in May.

Following the expiration of the temporary no-objection certificate (NOC) for Starlink in March, all foreign satellite operators are now required to submit new applications under the newly drafted Satellite Communications Regulations.

The Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSARB) is finalising these regulations based on industry feedback gathered during a recent roundtable discussion.

Two other Low Earth Orbit (LEO) operators, OneWeb and Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology (SSST), alongside Starlink, have expressed interest in starting operations in Pakistan.

Starlink, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, is one of the most technologically advanced companies globally among those providing internet via Low Earth Orbit satellites.

The LEO satellite network operates at an altitude of less than 2,000 kilometres from the Earth’s surface, offering high-speed data connectivity in all weather conditions at a relatively low cost, with a latency delay of only 25 milliseconds.

Once registered under the new regulations, satellite internet providers will need to obtain operational licences from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Dawn News quoted a PTA official as claiming that all companies, including Starlink, can launch their services by the end of this year, and reportedly, Elon Musk is also likely to attend the launch ceremony.

It merits a mention that Starlink was the first company to submit a formal application for registration. However, the absence of regulations leads to delays in licensing. The company has already been granted approval to provide satellite internet services in India.

“The new regulations will include important security clauses that may have been overlooked if the recent wars had not occurred,” Dawn News quoted a senior official from the Ministry of IT and Telecom as saying. “Besides, Pakistan needs more than one satellite internet provider, and two more companies have expressed interest.”

PakSat, Pakistan’s state-owned company and a subsidiary of Space and Upper Atmosphere Research (SUPARCO), currently provides satellite internet through Satellite Multi-Mission-1 (MM-1), the country’s second telecommunication satellite, launched in August 2024.

PakSat currently serves around 300 clients, with a capacity to accommodate up to 5,000 users. The service is primarily sold to the armed forces, the corporate sector and telecom providers for remote regions.

  • Celebs form WhatsApp group for mental health after Humaira Asghar’s unnoticed death

Celebs form WhatsApp group for mental health after Humaira Asghar’s unnoticed death

Actress Tuba Anwar has revealed that a special WhatsApp group has been created to help actresses in the showbiz industry stay connected and check in on each other’s mental health and well-being.

In an interview with a digital media outlet, Tuba revealed, “Some actresses have come together to form this group with the aim of regularly staying in touch and checking on each other’s mental health.”

She said this step was taken after the tragic death of actress Humaira Asghar Ali, who was reportedly struggling with loneliness and lacked social support. “There are many actresses who live away from their families for work, and they are all being included in this group,” she added.

“Humaira’s death has drawn attention to the importance of mental health and mutual support in the industry,” Tuba said.

She further explained the purpose of the group, saying, “Actresses will not only share their thoughts but also try to support each other so no one feels isolated. Many of my friends also work far from their hometowns and have been deeply affected by Humaira’s passing.”

This initiative comes after the heartbreaking discovery Humaira Asghar Ali, whose decomposed body was found in a flat in Defence Phase 6, Karachi.

She had been living alone in the rented apartment for the past seven years, after moving to Karachi from Lahore in 2018.

Her remains were discovered when a court bailiff arrived to vacate her flat on July 8, after the landlord filed a complaint over unpaid rent. When repeated knocks went unanswered, the bailiff broke the door open and found the 32-year-old actor’s body lying in a room, hidden away for months.

Initially, Karachi Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed estimated that Humaira had been dead for at least a month, based on the advanced stage of decomposition. However, investigators now believe her death occurred back in October 2024.

Her last Facebook post was shared on September 11, 2024, and her final Instagram update was on September 30. Deputy Inspector General Syed Asad Raza confirmed that Humaira’s phone records show her last dialled call was made in October 2024. After that, her phone remained inactive.

Investigators also found that her apartment’s electricity had been disconnected since October last year due to unpaid bills. The flat’s water pipes were dry and rusted, expired food was found in the kitchen, and there were no candles or backup lights.

“There were rusted jars, dry pipes, and no signs of electricity or candles in her flat,” an investigator said. “One neighbor returned to the vacant apartment on the same floor in February but by then the smell had faded because the balcony door had been left open.”

Humaira Asghar Ali rose to fame after winning Veet Miss Super Model in 2014 and was known for her appearance in the reality show Tamasha Ghar in 2022. She also acted in popular dramas including Just Married, Ehsaan Faramosh, Guru and Chal Dil Mere, and appeared in films like Jalaibee (2015) and Love Vaccine (2021).

Police efforts to locate her family revealed that Humaira’s father had severed ties with her nearly two years ago and initially refused to come to Karachi to claim her body. However, her remains were eventually handed over to her family on July 11.
