Messi’s Inter Miami knocked out of FIFA Club World Cup

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) knocked Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami out of the FIFA Club World Cup with a 4–0 victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday.

All four goals were scored in the first half. João Neves scored twice in the Round of 16 clash, followed by an own goal from Miami and a fourth from Achraf Hakimi before halftime. PSG will now face the winner of the Bayern Munich vs Flamengo match in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Inter Miami’s goalkeeper, Oscar Ustari, saved six goal attempts, while PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma saved three shots as Javier Mascherano’s side struggled to create chances for the first 50 minutes.

The match was Messi’s first game against PSG since leaving the French club two years ago.

PSG’s Desire Doue earned a free kick just outside the penalty area within the first five minutes. Vitinha’s delivery was perfect for Neves, who headed it in to open the scoring. Neves doubled the lead in the 39th minute after Fabian Ruiz intercepted the ball from Sergio Busquets and set up a quick passing move.

In the 44th minute, Tomas Aviles accidentally turned a PSG cross into his own net, before Bradley Barcola set up Achraf Hakimi to make it 4-0 just before halftime. Messi attempted to counter with Miami’s first shot in the 51st minute but failed.

On the other hand, global football star Cristiano Ronaldo has turned down an offer to play in the Club World Cup. In a video message after signing a new two-year deal with Saudi club Al Nassr, Ronaldo said, “I had some offers to play in the Club World Cup, but I thought it didn’t make sense because it’s better for me to rest and prepare well.”

Ronaldo added, “My goal is to stay fully fit not only for Al Nassr but also for Portugal’s national team. That’s why I limited myself to the Nations League final match and did not pay attention to any other offers.”

Pakistan’s students beat 750 entries to win Google AI award

Students from Islamabad’s Institute of Space Technology (IST) have been awarded the ‘Best AI Use Case’ at the 2025 Google APAC Solution Challenge held in Manila. Their creation, GeoGemma, was chosen from over 750 submissions from more than 200 universities in the Asia-Pacific region.

GeoGemma is an open-source application that streamlines the analysis of satellite data. It utilizes a Large Language Model (LLM) combined with Google Earth Engine, enabling users to examine geospatial data through natural language queries, thus removing the need for programming skills.

The concept was conceived by Ahmed Iqbal and Hanzila Bin Younus in 2024 as part of their final-year project in space sciences at IST. They applied for a research grant through the Gemma Academic Programme by Google DeepMind and successfully obtained $10,000 in funding. Their supervisor, Dr. Sajid Ghaffar, joined the initiative to create a team dedicated to developing a tool that makes Earth Engine accessible for non-programmers.

To enhance their project for the competition, the team recruited two additional IST students. Abdullah Asif focused on front-end development, while Khaleelullah took charge of AI engineering. Together, they constructed a model capable of retrieving and processing satellite data using straightforward input prompts, simplifying the process for users lacking technical expertise.

GeoGemma can extract spatial data such as thermal imaging or temperature measurements by superimposing maps with satellite information. The tool is applicable across various industries, including oil and gas, real estate, sustainability, and logistics.

In contrast to many AI tools that necessitate cloud computing or advanced systems, GeoGemma’s model is less than 2GB and can operate on standard laptops. The team noted that this design decision was made to enhance accessibility and lessen reliance on servers.

Another group from Pakistan students from Fast University also reached the top 10 finalists at the competition. Their project involved creating a Gemini-powered document editor aimed at assisting neurodivergent users.

GeoGemma was highlighted as one of the top 10 innovations presented during the final round in Manila, where the team represented Pakistan. Their tool was acknowledged for its capacity to automate geospatial analysis and for offering an AI-driven solution that could have practical applications.

The team is currently seeking to collaborate with industries to create customized modules for various sectors.

Bahawalnagar man arrested after wife says he invited friends to rape her

Fort Abbas police in Bahawalnagar have arrested a man accused of inviting three friends to his home with the intent to sexually assault his wife.

Karachi teen killed during scuffle over girlfriend’s photo

A teenager lost his life on Sunday in Karachi’s Guru Mandir area after getting into a fight with friends and a family member over a trivial matter, police have stated.

According to Jamshed Quarters police, seven boys were sitting at a restaurant near Kanzul Iman mosque when a heated argument broke out.

Six suspects, named as Talha Mohammed, Hasan alias Arif (a cousin of the deceased), Abdullah, Faraz Sattar, Manan Ali, and Moiz Mohammed, were taken into custody by police when they arrived on the site.

For medico-legal processes, the body was sent to Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital in Karachi.

The dispute between Manan Ali and Abdullah started when a profile picture of Abdullah’s girlfriend was discovered on Manan’s cell phone, according to Area SHO Anser Ahmed Butt, who spoke to a private news channel.

Manan allegedly pushed Abdul Rehman when he tried to step in, causing him to fall and die.

In the meantime, police stated on Sunday they had arrested two suspects who were allegedly motivated by personal enmity and accused of killing a police constable and burning his body inside his North Karachi home to cover up the crime.

  • Pro-Palestine protester in Australia injured by police, faces charges

Pro-Palestine protester in Australia injured by police, faces charges

Hannah Thomas, a pro-Palestine activist and former Greens candidate, was reportedly assaulted by police and taken to hospital after being arrested at a protest in Belmore on Friday.

The demonstration, attended by around 60 people, was held to protest the ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza by Israel. Thomas was later charged with resisting arrest.

Thomas described the laws used to suppress protests as “draconian anti-protest laws,” accusing New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Police Minister Yasmin Catley of “trying to demonise protesters, particularly pro-Palestine protesters” in a video recorded from her hospital bed.

Thomas “was given a move-on direction, resisted, and other people became involved,” according to assistant police commissioner Brett McFadden.

“There is no information that indicates any misconduct on behalf of my officers. A scuffle ensued, and she sustained the injury we believe during that arrest,” he added.

Thomas, 35, has been charged with resisting police and failing to comply with a direction, and is scheduled to appear in court on August 12.

In a video from her hospital bed, Thomas said: “I’m five-foot-one, I weigh about 45kg, I was engaged in peaceful protest. My interactions with NSW (New South Wales) police have left me potentially without vision in my right eye permanently.”

Four other people were also taken into custody by police during the demonstration outside SEC Plating, because the protest was intended to obstruct the manufacture of components which supposedly were to be used for F-35 fighter jets and other weapons.

Hannah Thomas is a former Greens candidate who ran against Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Sydney’s Grayndler seat during the May federal election this year.

  • Iran could again enrich uranium ‘in matter of months’: IAEA chief

Iran could again enrich uranium ‘in matter of months’: IAEA chief

UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi says Iran likely will be able to begin to produce enriched uranium “in a matter of months,” despite damage to several nuclear facilities from US and Israeli attacks, CBS News said Saturday.

Israel launched a bombing campaign on Iranian nuclear and military sites on June 13, saying it was aimed at keeping Iran from developing a nuclear weapon — an ambition the Islamic republic has consistently denied.

The United States subsequently bombed three key facilities used for Tehran’s atomic program.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the extent of the damage to the nuclear sites is “serious,” but the details are unknown. US President Donald Trump insisted Iran’s nuclear program had been set back “decades.”

But Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said “some is still standing.”

“They can have, you know, in a matter of months, I would say, a few cascades of centrifuges spinning and producing enriched uranium, or less than that,” Grossi said Friday, according to a transcript of the interview released Saturday.

Another key question is whether Iran was able to relocate some or all of its estimated 408.6-kilo (900-pound) stockpile of highly enriched uranium before the attacks.

The uranium in question is enriched to 60 percent — above levels for civilian usage but still below weapons grade. That material, if further refined, would theoretically be sufficient to produce more than nine nuclear bombs.

Grossi admitted to CBS: “We don’t know where this material could be.”

“So some could have been destroyed as part of the attack, but some could have been moved. So there has to be at some point a clarification,” he said in the interview.

For now, Iranian lawmakers voted to suspend cooperation with the IAEA and Tehran rejected Grossi’s request for a visit to the damaged sites, especially Fordo, the main uranium enrichment facility.

“We need to be in a position to ascertain, to confirm what is there, and where is it and what happened,” Grossi said.

In a separate interview with Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” program, Trump said he did not think the stockpile had been moved.

“It’s a very hard thing to do plus we didn’t give much notice,” he said, according to excerpts of the interview. “They didn’t move anything.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday underscored Washington’s support for “the IAEA’s critical verification and monitoring efforts in Iran,” commending Grossi and his agency for their “dedication and professionalism.”

The full Grossi interview will air on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on Sunday.

  • ‘Do this and you will get work’: Mehar Bano speaks out on harassment in entertainment industry

‘Do this and you will get work’: Mehar Bano speaks out on harassment in entertainment industry

Actress Mehar Bano has openly spoken about the shadows of harassment that often lurk behind the glitter and glamour of the entertainment industry.

Mehar Bano appeared on the comedy talk show Hansna Mana Hai, where she spoke candidly about her career and various hidden aspects of the entertainment industry.

Bano, who now lives outside Pakistan, revealed that artists are often pressured with “big demands” and “unreasonable conditions” in exchange for work, adding that harassment is something both men and women in the industry frequently face.

“Both boys and girls in the Pakistani showbiz industry face harassment frequently, whether in front of the camera or behind it. Such incidents are very common,” she stated.

She added, “Sometimes artists even receive offers like ‘Do this and you will get work.’ Powerful people in the industry put pressure on actors for work. Showbiz is a world full of beautiful faces and attractive personalities, which is why its dark side is so prominent and people often fall victim to it.”

Responding to a question, she said that she does not enjoy playing the roles of innocent girls in dramas. Instead, she prefers characters who are confident and make their own decisions. “I don’t like to play innocent girl roles. I prefer characters where girls are confident and take their own decisions because such roles match my own personality more,” she said.

In a surprising revelation, Mehar Bano shared that many well-known actors in the industry have poor personal hygiene, making it difficult to work with them. She recalled working on a project with actor Affan Waheed, saying, “We were working on a project where one co-actor’s body odor was really strong, but I didn’t say anything to him.”

She explained, “I usually don’t say anything about such things and handle it all professionally.”
