  • PCB considering ex-Pak captain with ICC trophy for chief selector role: reports

PCB considering ex-Pak captain with ICC trophy for chief selector role: reports

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly set to bring former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed into the national selection committee, with a strong chance that he will be appointed as the new chief selector, a private media outlet has claimed.

While there is no official confirmation as of yet, reports said that a formal announcement could come in the next few days.

The 37-year-old last played for Pakistan in a Test match in 2023 and has served the country in all three formats, leading the team to their memorable Champions Trophy win in 2017.

Sarfaraz had briefly taken on a mentorship role, which was recently discontinued, but PCB officials now believe his close understanding of current players, many of whom he has played alongside, could make him an asset in selecting the right squads and identifying emerging talent.

With new captains, coaching appointments and a fresh approach on the horizon, the PCB is looking to build a system that focuses on modern tactics, player management and long-term planning. Sarfaraz’s likely appointment as chief selector would be a key part of that process.

Separately, reports said that former Pakistan captain Misbah Ul Haq is likely to be appointed as the head coach for Test.

Misbah, who previously served as head coach and chief selector from 2019 to 2021, is being considered for the red-ball slot as the PCB plans to strengthen its Test team.

While an official statement is awaited, there have also been reports that Saud Shakeel is set to replace Shan Masood as the new Test captain. The 29-year-old vice-captain has shown strong and consistent performances, making him a top candidate for the leadership role.

As part of the revamp plans, Mike Hesson has been appointed as the white-ball head coach and Aqib Javed has been told to lead the national side’s high-performance setup.

Global nuclear watchdog rejects Indian reports of radiation leak in Pakistan

Global nuclear watchdog, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has ruled out Indian reports and speculations of radiation leaks from any nuclear facility in Pakistan following the country’s escalated military engagement with India.

“We are aware of the reports you are referring to. Based on information available to the IAEA, there has been no radiation leak or release from any nuclear facility in Pakistan,” an Indian outlet quoted an IAEA spokesperson as saying on Thursday (today) in response to a query on whether any nuclear incident or spill has been brought to the notice of the IAEA’s Incident and Emergency Centre.

The IAEA’s Incident and Emergency Centre, which was established in 2005, is the focal point for the coordination of international assistance in emergency preparedness and response to radiation incidents and emergencies regardless of their cause or severity.

Speculations in India had skyrocketed that Pakistan had come under nuclear radiation following an alleged Indian Air Force strike in Kirana Hills in Pakistan last week.

A fake notification also popped up on Indian social media, saying the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination in Pakistan claimed that radiation leaked on Sunday during the transfer of a sophisticated mechanism in the northern region of Pakistan.

In a joint press briefing on Monday, after being asked whether the IAF had targeted any nuclear facility in Pakistan, Air Marshal Bharti, Director General of Air Operations, said, “We have not hit Kirana Hills. I did not brief in my briefing yesterday.”

It merits a mention that an agreement was made between India and Pakistan in December 1998 on the prohibition of attacks against nuclear installations and facilities.

According to the agreement, the term “nuclear installation or facility” includes nuclear power and research reactors, fuel fabrication, uranium enrichment, isotope separation, and reprocessing facilities, as well as any other installations with fresh or irradiated nuclear fuel and materials in any form and establishments storing significant quantities of radioactive materials.

Section two of the agreement read, “Each Contracting Party shall inform the other on 1st January of each calendar year of the latitude and longitude of its nuclear installations and facilities and whenever there is any change.”

Under the Agreement, on January 1, 2025, India and Pakistan had reportedly exchanged, through diplomatic channels, the list of “nuclear installations and facilities” covered between the two countries.

‘You people write anything’; Hania Aamir slams fake news with sharp response

Actress Hania Aamir has responded quite strongly to people spreading fake news about her on social media.

With 18.6 million followers on Instagram, Hania is the most followed actress in Pakistan. She recently reacted in her own unique style to viral posts using her name just for views and likes.

She shared a viral video in her Instagram story that showed mobile camera tips and tricks. However, the creator falsely used her name to attract attention.

Hania Aamir called the claim “fake and fabricated.” She used the moment to highlight the growing problem of fake news in a simple but effective way.

In her story, she wrote: “Although it’s not that serious, you people write anything, say anything, and talk about yourself.”

She continued: “Anyone says anything and you agree. You keep playing with each other  what are you doing?” She also urged people to fact-check before believing or sharing anything.

Hania Aamir took a strong stance against those who spread false information.

Hania Aamir is not only loved in Pakistan but also has fans in India. However, during past tensions between the two countries, she was one of the artists targeted by boycott campaigns.

Earlier, a fake Instagram story using her name went viral. It falsely claimed that she made an appeal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Pahalgam attack. Hania clarified, saying: “I have nothing to do with this post. It’s fake.”

Soon after that, another rumor claimed she had created a separate Instagram account for Indian fans. She cleared the air by saying she only uses one official Instagram account.

Through her latest response, Hania Amir once again reminded everyone not to fall for fake news and always verify facts before sharing.

  • PCB likely to appoint new Test captain: report

PCB likely to appoint new Test captain: report

The Pakistan cricket team is undergoing major changes both on and off the field, with one of the most significant updates being the reported appointment of Saud Shakeel as the new Test captain. The potential move is part of a broader plan to rebuild the team.

According to media reports, 29-year-old middle-order batter Saud Shakeel, who is currently the Test vice-captain, is likely to replace Shan Masood. This move suggests that Shan’s tenure as captain, and possibly as a player in the Test format, may be nearing its end.

While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not officially confirmed the appointment, reports indicate that the decision is almost final. The board is also in the process of selecting a new head coach for the red-ball team, signalling more changes.

Shan Masood was appointed captain in late 2023 but has struggled to produce results, both with the bat and in terms of leadership. After just 12 matches, many within the setup believe he is not the right choice to lead the team forward.

Team officials are now looking for younger, more consistent players to shape the future, and Saud Shakeel fits that profile well.

Since making his Test debut, he has maintained an average of over 50 and has displayed a calm temperament. His leadership as a captain for Quetta Gladiators during Pakistan Super League (PSL) X this year further strengthened his credentials.

Pakistan recently had a disappointing run in the World Test Championship, and now the cricket board is planning a fresh start. In addition to potential changes in leadership, new coaching appointments are expected. Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq is reportedly among those being considered for key roles.

Earlier, the PCB confirmed the appointment of Mike Hesson as the new white-ball head coach, while Aaqib Javed will lead the High Performance setup.

Mexico influencer shot dead during TikTok live

Social media influencer Valeria Marquez, 23, has been shot dead during a TikTok livestream from her beauty salon in Jalisco, Mexico.

According to a report from the local attorney general’s office, a man entered her salon and fatally shot her while she was filming a live video inside her Blossom Beauty Lounge on May 13. The video that quickly spread across different platforms showed her grabbing her abdomen before collapsing.

The shooting happened around 6:30 pm local time, reports said, adding that emergency services arrived shortly after but paramedics confirmed that Marquez no longer had any vital signs.

Officials are currently gathering evidence and are talking witnesses. The investigation is ongoing and the case is being treated as a femicide – the killing of a woman because of her gender.

While an autopsy is pending following family’s identification, fans are heartbroken over the influencer’s death.

“She was very beautiful. I hope justice is served… she didn’t deserve that ending,” wrote one fan. Another said, “No one deserves to die that way. May this beautiful young woman rest in peace.”

  • Imran Khan accepts PM Shehbaz Sharif’s offer for dialogue

Imran Khan accepts PM Shehbaz Sharif’s offer for dialogue

The incarcerated former prime minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, has reportedly agreed to initiate dialogue with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led ruling coalition, following an offer of talks extended by Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif.

According to The News on Thursday (today), Imran Khan has authorised PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan to represent the party in the talks. Gohar met Khan at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, on Monday.

However, Imran Khan emphasised that the discussions should take place away from media attention to allow for more productive and meaningful outcomes.

Citing PTI insiders, The News reported that the party will now formally approach the government to proceed with the dialogue, believing that previous negotiations failed under media scrutiny. PTI is therefore now pushing for a quieter, more focused strategy.

The News, citing sources within PTI, further revealed that Imran Khan wants the negotiations to have the backing of the military establishment. One source added that Khan is even open to meeting a representative of the establishment to help move the process forward.

Barrister Gohar confirmed to The News that he had conveyed PM Shehbaz Sharif’s offer to Imran Khan. However, he declined to share the details of their discussion or the direction Khan had taken. “I can’t divulge what was discussed between us,” the PTI chairman said.

This positive development followed PM Shehbaz Sharif’s recent speech in the National Assembly, where he invited PTI to join a national dialogue. While Barrister Gohar welcomed the proposal at the time, party circles made it clear that no progress could be made without Khan’s explicit consent.

PCB shares major update on PSL X tickets

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has shared good news for cricket fans. Tickets bought before the postponement of Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season X will still be valid for the upcoming matches starting on May 17.

This announcement brings relief to thousands of fans who had purchased their tickets earlier in the season, only to be left uncertain after the tournament was paused amid Pakistan and India tensions. With matches to resume in Rawalpindi and the final scheduled for May 25 in Lahore, fans can now attend without needing to repurchase or revalidate their tickets.

In addition, the PCB has confirmed that new tickets for the remaining eight matches are now available for purchase via the TCS website and selected express centres.

Islamabad United get a boost as two stars return for PSL X

Islamabad United have received a significant boost ahead of the restart of Pakistan Super League (PSL X), with experienced overseas batters Rassie van der Dussen and Alex Hales set to rejoin the squad at a critical juncture. The team is looking to recover momentum after a disappointing run of four consecutive losses.

According to media reports, both the team members will be playing for the remainder of the tournament, a relief following the struggle with player unavailability in recent weeks. Key figures such as Jason Holder, Colin Munro, Riley Meredith, and Ben Dwarshuis are no longer part of the squad, leaving United’s depth and balance stretched.

The return of Hales and van der Dussen is expected to strengthen the team’s batting lineup as United aim to reach the playoffs.

Van der Dussen, known as one of the most dependable overseas performers in PSL history, was initially drafted but he missed the early stages of the season owing to personal commitments. Meanwhile, Hales, who has been a regular feature for United in previous editions, initially drafted, now rejoins the franchise to bolster their campaign.

Other PSL franchises, however, continue to struggle with key foreign departures. Lahore Qalandars, still in the playoff race, have lost all-rounder Sikandar Raza to Zimbabwe’s Test commitments. Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators are also struggling to replace unavailable foreign players.

  • ‘Hanging By A Wire’: Pakistan’s 900-foot sky rescue now a thrilling cannes documentary

‘Hanging By A Wire’: Pakistan’s 900-foot sky rescue now a thrilling cannes documentary

A high-stakes rescue mission in the mountains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in August 2023, which gripped global audiences, is now being turned into a documentary titled Hanging By A Wire. The film is directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Mohammad Ali Naqvi.

Naqvi will present exclusive footage from the documentary during Cannes Docs Week, part of the prestigious Marché du Film at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

He shared the news on Instagram, posting a report by Deadline and calling the documentary “deeply personal”.

“A real-life thriller set in the mountains of Pakistan where six schoolboys were left dangling 900 feet in the air, and an entire nation came together to pull off the impossible,” he wrote.

Naqvi also praised his long-time collaborator Bilal Sami and the production teams at EverWonder Studio and Mindhouse Productions. The team includes notable names such as Aloke Devichand, Arron Fellows, Louis Theroux, and Jon Adler.

Hanging By A Wire recounts the harrowing story of six schoolboys and two adults who were trapped in a cable car 900 feet above the ground for over 15 hours. They had been trying to cross a treacherous valley to reach school when two of the car’s cables snapped.

The rescue mission involved helicopters, ziplines, military commandos, local villagers, and a race against time.

According to a press release, the documentary will feature “never-before-seen footage capturing multiple angles which required helicopters, ziplines, and heroic efforts  plus first-hand accounts from the first responders and survivors who lived to tell their story.”

Naqvi described the film as feeling like a movie: “I grew up devouring ‘90s action thrillers, and with Hanging By A Wire we’re giving that white-knuckle rush a documentary backbone. Every frame is real six schoolboys, 900 feet in the air, a rescue clock ticking down and that authenticity makes the stakes soar.”

This marks the latest project from Naqvi, known for Turning Point (Netflix), Shame (Showtime), and the Emmy-nominated The Accused: Damned or Devoted?

The documentary is co-produced with Bilal Sami, known for David Blaine: Do Not Attempt (Disney+/Hulu) and the Pakistani feature film Laal Kabootar.
