Student gang-raped in Multan’s Nishtar Medical University

A student of Multan’s Nishtar Medical University (NMU) was reportedly kidnapped from the university campus and gang raped by two men.

Media reports suggest that the prime suspect, who kidnapped the student, is an employee of the university, while the second suspect is his friend.

An initial investigation by the police says that the suspects drove the girl to an unknown location, away from the university premises and raped her.

Dawn quotes Multan Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sohail Chaudhry as saying that the police acted promptly upon receiving the information and arrested the two suspects.

Dawn’s Asif Chaudhry reported that a senior NMU doctor said that the girl was in trauma.

The doctor also claimed that senior doctors are putting pressure on the university and hospital management to take up the matter with the police.

However, a medical examination and DNA testing are yet to be carried out.

Multan Cantonment SP Tahir Majeed told media that the police is trying to get a medical examination and DNA test to proceed with the case.

Notably, Nishtar Medical University Multan has been in the spotlight for the last few months because of the violation of medical protocols at the dialysis unit, causing more than 30 patients to contract Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections during dialysis treatment at the medical centre on October 26.

The incident surfaced when a patient breathed his last of HIV/AIDs complications and was identified as Shahnawaz (40). He was under treatment at the nephrology department of the hospital, where the doctors contacted the institute’s top management to refer him to the isolation ward for immediate care soon after he tested positive for HIV/AIDs after the completion of a dialysis session.

Following the incident, panic spread among the doctors, nurses and other employees of the nephrology department when news broke out that HIV/AIDS infections were transmitted to 30 other patients.

Investigation revealed that the police identified 30-35 people, including the Nishtar Hospital staff, who were behind the alleged tampering of the record of the kidney patients tested positive for HIV/AIDS.

However, the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) expressed support for the medics, including the Nishtar Medical University (NMU) Vice Chancellor, who was suspended for negligence that resulted in infections of dozens of kidney patients with HIV in the hospital based on the findings of the probe committee made by the Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz.

Aftab Iqbal returns home after reported ‘missing’

Hours after reportedly going “missing” from Dubai airport, satirical comedy show host Aftab Iqbal has safely returned home.

“We went through a tough time, but Alhamdulillah, Aftab Iqbal has safely returned home. Thank you to everyone who prayed for us,” read a tweet posted on Aftab Iqbal’s official handle on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.

Aftab Iqbal’s counsel, Mian Ali Ashfaq, clarified in a post on his X handle on Tuesday that no case had been registered against his client in Pakistan, adding, “Aftab Iqbal’s name has not been included in the no-fly list due to judicial intervention. Despite this, he was stopped at Dubai airport last night and had left for home safely some time ago.”

Ashfaq further stated that Aftab Iqbal himself would narrate the story in a few hours.

Earlier, it was reported that a renowned host was “missing” after his detention at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Airport in Dubai.

According to Aftab’s daughter, Ayesha Noor Iqbal, her father was arrested after landing at Dubai airport.
“He returned from the UK with my mother, and the immigration authorities took him away. Later, they said he has a clean chit from the UAE government, but they gave no further details of where and how he is,” she said.

The host’s brother, Junaid Iqbal, confirmed the development in a post on his X account.

He stated that Aftab Iqbal was detained from Manchester upon arrival in Dubai without any explanation. “He [Aftab Iqbal] was stopped and detained there without assigning any reason. We have not yet got wind of him ever since,” he added.

He urged authorities to intervene and ensure Iqbal’s safe exit from the airport.

It may be recalled that days after the TV host’s detention at the Dubai airport, he accused the former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa of blocking his comedy show from going on air in 2022.

Iqbal claimed that he had made a parody song with visuals related to the then COAS, which offended him. However, he clarified that had he not made the parody, his show would never have gone off the air.

“PEMRA is the instrument of a fascist imported govt which can’t tolerate any justifiable criticisms. My Programme, which is recognised as satire, has been forced off the air. Is this democracy worse than Mussolini’s fascist Italy? I intend to contest these illegal actions on every forum [sic],” the journalist had said in a post on his X account in 2022.

Aftab has worked on many prominent news channels, including Geo News, Express News, Dunya News, and Samaa.

  • After EU, UK and US express concerns over May 9 civilians’ military trials

After EU, UK and US express concerns over May 9 civilians’ military trials

After twenty-five civilians were sentenced to prison by military courts on December 21 for their involvement in attacks on military installations during the May 9 riots, the United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) have also raised concerns about the lack of transparency.

A spokesperson for the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said: “While the UK respects Pakistan’s sovereignty over its legal proceedings, trying civilians in military courts lacks transparency and independent scrutiny and undermines the right to a fair trial.”

“We call on the government of Pakistan to uphold its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR),” concluded the FCDO spokesperson on December 23.

Similarly, the US States Department issued a press statement which read: “The United States is deeply concerned that a military tribunal has sentenced Pakistani civilians for their involvement in protests on May 9, 2023. These military courts lack judicial independence, transparency, and due process guarantees.”

“The United States continues to call on Pakistani authorities to respect the right to a fair trial and due process, as enshrined in Pakistan’s constitution,” stated the press release by the US State Department.

Earlier, the European Union (EU) also raised serious concerns over the military trials of civilians, stating that the verdicts were seen as “inconsistent with the obligations that Pakistan has undertaken under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).”

An EU spokesperson pointed out that under the EU’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), beneficiary countries, including Pakistan, have voluntarily agreed to implement conventions that include the ICCPR in order to continue benefitting from GSP+ status.

GSP+ allows developing countries, including Pakistan, to export goods to the EU market at zero duties for 66 per cent of tariff lines. This preferential status is conditional on GSP Plus countries demonstrating tangible progress on the implementation of 27 international conventions on human and labour rights, environmental protection, climate change and good governance. Pakistan now exports approximately EUR 5.4 billion worth of goods, namely garments, bedlinen, terry towels, hosiery, leather, sports and surgical goods, to the European Union.

Pakistan’s military media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced the verdicts of civilians’ military trials over the May 9 riots a few days after the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench conditionally allowed military courts to announce their verdicts.

Ten-year sentences were handed down to 14 of the 25 persons convicted, with one each given nine-year, seven-year, and three-year terms; six years to two; four years to another two; and two years to four people.

  • Fakhar Zaman breaks silence on Babar Azam tweet

Fakhar Zaman breaks silence on Babar Azam tweet

Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has finally broken his silence on tweeting in support of Babar Azam in October, explaining why he did so.

He appeared on PAKTV.TV on YouTube on Monday with sports Journalist Sanaullah, where he openly talked about tweeting in favour of Babar Azam and gave his reasons for doing so. The host asked him, “If you had tweeted, did it occur to you that there could have been a better way and that you should not have tweeted?”

“I completely thought that it would have been better if I had not tweeted,” Fakhar replied. “People also thought that I had criticized the Board’s (Pakistan Cricket Board) decision, but this was 100 per cent wrong. I had tweeted before the team was announced. Some of our journalists and former cricketers were saying that Babar should be dropped. It was coming to my mind that people do not see that Babar Azam has done so much for the country and are saying that he should be dropped.”

Fakhar said that he tweeted before the team was announced. “Think for yourself, I am also a cricketer, in a way, an employee of the PCB. I will tell all the players that you can never be above the Board, nor can you criticize any decision of the Board as long as you are playing. I did not tweet because Babar would sympathize with me, I always talk to him on and off,” he added.

He also said, “The young batter Khawaja Naffay is a good boy; he has a spark. You must have seen that Saim Ayub came in the beginning, and he also struggled a lot. The first thing I said about him was that if he takes care of himself, he can become an updated version of Babar Azam. Similarly, this boy Naffay also has a lot of spark, if he is groomed for big cricket, he can play for Pakistan for a long time.”

Fakhar had expressed his support for Babar Azam on X (formerly Twitter) on October 13, 2024, following Babar’s exclusion from Pakistan’s Test squad for the remaining matches against England. In his post, Fakhar highlighted that during Virat Kohli’s challenging period between 2020 and 2023, India did not drop him, suggesting that sidelining Babar could negatively impact the team.

  • Cricket integrity sacrificed for India in the Champions Trophy: The Telegraph

Cricket integrity sacrificed for India in the Champions Trophy: The Telegraph

Tim Wigmore of the British newspaper The Telegraph has taken a dig at India, saying the reputation of the game has been sacrificed to benefit the country in the Champions Trophy, while stressing that India is using its power to prevent Pakistan from hosting the final.

Wigmore, the Deputy Cricket Correspondent, termed the entire saga a “complete disgrace”. The two venues of the Champions Trophy are Pakistan and the UAE. The final is scheduled in Lahore, but if India reaches it, it will be played in the UAE.

Wigmore did not mince his words when dissecting that one country has so much power that it can prevent another country from hosting the final. The venue of the final will not be known until March 4, i.e. five days in advance, there is no example of this anywhere.

Lahore is preparing again after hosting the 1996 World Cup final, the fans and organizers do not know whether the final will be held there or not.

Pakistan was awarded the 2025 Champions Trophy with 15 matches, but India was not given the option to play the matches in another country, Tim said.

Wigmore pointed out that the seven countries in the event do not know where they will play the knockout matches; only India knows where they will play in the semi-finals and finals.

ICC events continue to sacrifice the reputation of the game for Indian interests. In the 2019 World Cup, India did not play a match for eight days after the start of the tournament, while South Africa was playing the third match, Tim wrote.

A gap of 15 days has been added from the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to the international match. In the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups, India’s final group matches were kept at the end to see the run rate.

India’s final matches in the T20 and ODI World Cups were played against weaker opponents. This year, India’s semi-final was held in Guyana without considering the group position in the T20 World Cup, Tim said.

In the Champions Trophy, India will have to form a squad according to the conditions of one country, while the other seven teams will have to look at the conditions of two countries for their squads.

Journalist Aftab Iqbal ‘goes missing’ after detention at Dubai airport

Senior journalist and late night host Aftab Iqbal has gone missing after detention by airport authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), his daughter said Monday.

According to Ayesha Noor Iqbal, the journalist was arrested from an airport in Dubai upon his return from the United Kingdom (UK).

“He returned from the UK with my mother and the immigration authorities took him away. Later, they said he has a clean chit from the UAE govt but they gave no further details of where and how he is,” she said.

Earlier, Iqbal’s brother Junaid Iqbal also claimed that his eldest brother was “nowhere to be seen” since after his detention at the airport.

While there has been no official statement on his arrest, the journalist had earlier this month made headlines for hurling accusations at former Pakistani army chief Gen (r) Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Talking about his hit satirical show that was taken off air by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) in 2022, Iqbal had claimed that he made a parody song with visuals related to the then chief of army staff (COAS), which offended him.

He said had he not made the parody, his show would never have gone off the air.

“PEMRA is the instrument of a fascist imported govt which can’t tolerate any justifiable criticisms. My Programme, which is recognised as satire, has been forced off the air. Is this democracy worse than Mussolini’s fascist Italy? I intend to contest these illegal actions on every forum [sic],” the journalist had said in a statement in 2022.

Following the announcement, several journalists, politicians, and activists had called on the government to review the action, citing freedom of expression concerns.
