  • ‘I was told to sleep for a role’: Zhalay Sarhadi, Hafsa Butt expose showbiz’s dark side

‘I was told to sleep for a role’: Zhalay Sarhadi, Hafsa Butt expose showbiz’s dark side

Pakistani actor and model Zhalay Sarhadi isn’t mincing words when it comes to the ugly truths lurking behind the glamour of being a celebrity.

Appearing on Excuse Me with Ahmed Ali Butt, Zhalay tackled some of the industry’s most toxic realities, from the age-old casting couch culture to deep-rooted misogyny, all while casually dismantling gender stereotypes one statement at a time.

Zhalay didn’t hold back when addressing the pervasive belief that a woman’s income lacks “blessing.” Responding to the idea that “aurat ki kamayi mein barkat nahi hoti”, she firmly countered: “I’ve funded my own education, my own wedding, and bought my own car. So I don’t see how my earnings are any less abundant than a man’s.”

On a lighter note, when asked if she was the one who proposed to her husband, Zhalay chuckled, “No, I made sure my husband proposed to me. My personality is very intimidating. What can I say?”

But the conversation quickly turned serious when she acknowledged that her intimidating nature might have developed as a defense mechanism in an industry where exploitation is often brushed under the rug.

“Possibly,” she admitted. “I also had to give a shut-up call in the beginning to a couple of people. I faced it. I wouldn’t say that it was a very aggressive proposition. But I got it.”

Recounting one specific incident, she said, “I was told that if I wanted a role of my choice, I’d have to play along with what ‘other women would sleep with someone for’.”

Her response was firm and fearless, “I lost it, which is normal. I told them that I’m just doing this to fund my education, and if anyone approaches me with an offer like this, I would slap them.”

In a sharp follow-up, she added that the man who made the offer had once dismissed her as “too tall.” She didn’t hesitate to point out the irony, “Even though he was the director and had nothing to do with my height.”

When asked if the man was still working in the industry, Zhalay delivered a biting reply, “MashaAllah, yes. Such people remain a part of the industry.”

Zhalay isn’t alone in speaking up. Just weeks earlier, actress Hafsa Butt shared a similarly chilling casting couch encounter on the FHM Podcast. She claimed a producer had propositioned her in exchange for a lead role: “These things are normal in the showbiz industry and happen to everyone,” she said. “Almost all women in the industry face harassment, but very few speak up.”

Revealing details of her experience, Hafsa recalled that after initially being contacted about a role, the producer said: “If you want the lead role, you should give me something in return.”

When she asked for clarification, he said, “You should be in my bed.”

“I was shocked,” she said. Days later, the same producer called to say he was “just joking” and that she shouldn’t take it seriously.

Despite not naming the producer, Hafsa said she shared the story to raise awareness, not for herself, but for every woman facing similar abuse.

Actress Mehar Bano also added her voice to the growing chorus of women exposing the ugly side of showbiz.

On the talk show Hansna Mana Hai, she stated, “Both boys and girls in the Pakistani showbiz industry face harassment frequently, whether in front of the camera or behind it. Such incidents are very common.”

She explained how influential figures pressure actors into compromising situations, “Sometimes artists even receive offers like ‘Do this and you will get work.’ Powerful people in the industry put pressure on actors for work.”

She described the industry as one that thrives on appearances: “Showbiz is a world full of beautiful faces and attractive personalities, which is why its dark side is so prominent and people often fall victim to it.”

In a candid aside, she revealed a surprising (and slightly humorous) detail, “We were working on a project where one co-actor’s body odor was really strong, but I didn’t say anything to him. I usually don’t say anything about such things and handle it all professionally.”

  • ‘Weak and unconvincing’: Nadia Khan mocks Saima Noor, Sajal Aly’s dialogue delivery in Main Manto Nahi Hoon

‘Weak and unconvincing’: Nadia Khan mocks Saima Noor, Sajal Aly’s dialogue delivery in Main Manto Nahi Hoon

TV host and commentator Nadia Khan has mocked Saima Noor and Sajal Aly for their dialogue delivery in the latest drama Main Manto Nahi Hoon, saying that the characters sound weak and unconvincing.

The drama has been airing on ARY for the past few weeks and has received mixed reactions for its story and characters. In the series, Sajal plays the role of Saima Noor’s niece while Humayun Saeed and Sanam Saeed portray university professors.

While Main Manto Nahi Hoon earlier faced criticism for showing a romantic relationship between a teacher and student, the on-screen chemistry between Saima and Sajal as aunt and niece has received positive feedback.

However, Nadia Khan has now openly mocked both actors, saying their dialogues sound weak and unconvincing.

While imitating their delivery, Nadia sarcastically reenacted several lines, making exaggerated facial expressions. She said Sajal’s character says things like, “Mujhe birthday party mein jana hai,” to which Saima’s character responds, “Toh chali jao.”

She continued, saying, “Abbu ijaazat nahi denge,” and Saima replies, “Toh mana lo.” Then, “Abbu maarenge,” and Saima replies, “Toh mar jao.”

Nadia also criticised Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar’s writing without naming him, and said the characters had been given poorly-written dialogues. “Saima’s character should not have had such weak dialogues,” she said and added that dialogues should have been argumentative and powerful.

The remarks, however, didn’t sit well with many on social media. Some users accused her of constantly mocking others instead of offering constructive criticism while some said she herself was a “failed actress”.

Several people also pointed out that this wasn’t the first time Nadia had targeted a drama written by controversial writer Qamar, suggesting there might be a personal grudge involved.

Hania Aamir’s new post might be a hint at a major project

Hania Aamir’s latest post from her trip to Bangkok has fans thinking it might be teasing something big.

She shared a set of photos and videos from a recent commercial shoot in Thailand, where she was joined by actors Fahad Mustafa and Bilal Abbas.

The carousel begins with a light-hearted photo of Hania and Fahad on set, captioned simply: “revive yourself please.”

One video features Hania and the entire team wishing Fahad Mustafa a happy birthday.

Another video shows Hania dancing in the rain with a team member while singing “Aj meri Munni ki salgirah hai,” a playful moment that fans are already calling one of their favorites.

However, it’s the final clip that’s drawing the most attention, a behind-the-scenes moment from the shoot showing Hania, Fahad, and Bilal Abbas together, casually hanging out between takes. The video instantly sent fans into a frenzy.

Reactions poured in quickly, with one fan writing, “Loving the vibes and your fits besttt,” while another added, “Such a freaking cute birthday wish!!! I am not crying .”

Hania also shared additional behind-the-scenes content from the shoot, with one fan even requesting, “Share some more BTS with Bilal plz ❤.” So far, no updates have been provided on the nature of the project, but given the names involved, it’s already generating major anticipation.

In the caption, he wrote, “Thank you love you need you read you ❤
As for this song: it’s a 13th century ditty in which a young bride tells her girlfriends: ‘Don’t ask about my groom, he’s green, evergreen!’ ”

The track draws on ancient poetry and modern sound, making it both nostalgic and experimental, just the kind of fusion Sethi is known for.

Fans instantly responded with admiration and excitement.

Bridegroom is one of the 16 tracks from Love Language, Ali’s first full-length studio album, which officially dropped on August 1, 2025.

The album, described by the singer as “a ragamala rendezvous,” features a bold red aesthetic, seen in gloves, shirts, headpieces, and even the tracklist artwork, symbolizing intensity, love, and artistic freedom.

The album includes previously released singles Maya and Tera Sitam, as well as new titles like O Balama (Censored Love Song), Hanera, Rocket Launcher featuring Maanu, Nursery Rhyme (Interlude), Lovely Bukhaar, Jhatka in Jaunpuri (Interlude), Hymn 4 Him (Ghoomray), Villain, Bridegroom, Jadugarni, Kaava, Horizon, Subho Shaam featuring Natania, and Escape From Jhaptaal.

Ali Sethi has always stood out for blending traditional South Asian music with modern experimental styles. With Love Language, he’s seems ready to bring that mix to an even larger stage.

  • Pakistan Idol is back and Fawad Khan’s ad is already a hot hit

Pakistan Idol is back and Fawad Khan’s ad is already a hot hit

After over a decade, Pakistan Idol is making its comeback, and it’s rolling in with A-list star power.

Pakistan Idol first aired on Geo Entertainment from December 2013 to April 2014, ending with Zamad Baig winning the title in a finale that drew over a million votes. The judging panel included veteran actress Bushra Ansari, rock star Ali Azmat, and pop icon Hadiqa Kiani.

But now, it’s back, with an all-new panel that feels like a musical Avengers lineup: Fawad Khan, Zeb Bangash, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and Bilal Maqsood.

The reboot is led by Pakistani media company MHL Global in partnership with Fremantle. And they’re not just thinking small, the new Pakistan Idol will be broadcast on five networks simultaneously. Apparently, that’s a first for any Idol franchise globally.

“This platform will not only spotlight talent nationwide but elevate it to the global stage,” said Zoya Merchant, director at MHL, in a conversation with Variety.

To create a buzz, Fawad Khan, in collaboration with Pakistan Idol, dropped an ad on Instagram.

The promo features him as a mechanic encouraging another mechanic, who’s mid-ghazal, singing “Dekh to dil ke jaan se uthta hai, yeh dhuaan sa kahaan se uthta hai” (written by Mir Taqi Mir and famously sung by Mehdi Hassan), to stop hiding his talent and audition for Pakistan Idol.

“Yeh aapki jagah nahi hai,” says Fawad with a serious face.

The other mechanic jokes, “Phir meri kaunsi jagah hai bey?”

Fawad hands over an Idol audition card and replies, “Ustad Billu se Ustad Bilal Khan ban jao!”

The banter ends with Fawad urging the viewer: “Aap bhi Begin app download karein aur foran apna audition bhejein!”

  • ‘Men shouldn’t look like that on family TV’: Atiqa Odho sticks to her comments about chest hair

‘Men shouldn’t look like that on family TV’: Atiqa Odho sticks to her comments about chest hair

Veteran actress and Kia Drama Hai co-host Atiqa Odho is setting the record straight after two of her recent remarks unleashed major online backlash.

Odho, known for her unapologetic commentary on Kya Drama Hai, weighed in on everything from cultural taboos around arranged marriages to male actors’ wardrobe choices. But while some applauded her honesty, others accused her of overstepping her boundaries.

Now, she’s doubling down and sticking to her guns.

During a segment critiquing the drama Dastak, Odho called out actor Ali Raza for appearing onscreen with an unbuttoned shirt, exposing his chest. Her take was blunt.

“It’s not necessary to show a hairy chest on screen,” she said. “Please, do wax your chest. Hairy chests are the biggest turn-off. I can even take you to the salon.”

The comment, meant partly in jest, quickly went viral, with viewers split between outrage and laughter.

In a recent interview on Beyond with Bahjat, Odho addressed the fallout.

“I give my opinion as a senior commentator on Kia Drama Hai,” she said. “It doesn’t mean I’m trying to put down new actors. I just don’t think men should be showing up on family TV looking like that.”

Another flashpoint was her candid reflection on arranged marriages in conservative societies. Odho questioned how two strangers navigate intimacy immediately after marriage, an observation that, unsurprisingly, hit a nerve.

“We live in a conservative society where boys and girls often don’t even know each other before marriage,” she said on the show. “When the wedding night comes, they have to go through an experience like intimacy with a stranger.”

Many saw the comment as inappropriate. Odho disagrees.

“I still stand by that comment,” she told Beyond with Behjat. “It was real curiosity. In our culture, girls are told not to talk to men, and suddenly they become someone’s spouse. I wanted to understand how they feel on that first night.”

Odho emphasized that her role isn’t to shock, it’s to question, reflect, and hopefully spark change.

“The purpose of my comments is not criticism, it’s correction and improvement,” she said. “As seniors, we want to guide the new generation. Unfortunately, things get misrepresented.”

  • Bore me no more, Manto

    Bore me no more, Manto

Episode 5 and 6 of Mai Manto Nahi Hoon will either make you wonder when the show will pick up pace, if ever, or you will watch it in the background. Initially, the beautiful cinematography and actors really made it seem like this was the blockbuster of the year but now, the dull dialogues and extremely slow storyline, which only keeps adding further threads of controversy rather than keeping to the plot itself, is pulling the whole thing down.

In Episode 5 and 6, we see there is more to Manto that meets the eye, although shockingly Humayun Saeed’s acting isn’t really delivering. With such a mega superstar at the helm, you start to wonder if the problem is his acting or you – the monotone way Manto reacts, his completely absurd reactions to being hit by Farhad (Azaan Sami Khan) and being offered a million dollars, the lack of emotions he exhibits seems deliberate and confusing and one begins to wonder if its going to keep on going and we really won’t understand Manto.

While there are already references to his NOT being like Manto, the prolific writer, it is still the strangeness of his reaction that keeps the viewer confused. He’s definitely a deeply wounded, scared individual but is that all there is to him? If yes, perhaps Humayun Saeed was the wrong choice for Manto because you expect so much more, and it isn’t being delivered – likely by design.

That being said, Sajal Aly is a dream as Mehmal. Her character is always evolving and we see a new side to her every time she’s on screen, which is such a joy to watch. If the point of the show is to show the evolution of Mehmal as the don kingmaker, she’s definitely going to do it justice. When she slaps Farhad at the party, that’s when you look up from whatever it was you were doing to finally give the drama attention. A new layer is unveiled in Mehmal and we are here for it.

Coming to Khalilur Rehman Qamar’s writing, the sexist remarks in episode 5 were clearly there but are we even surprised? The teacher-student romance seems like its definitely on the cards but now the principal also has to pass comments on the beauty of female students. It’s disturbing and a real put-off and we’re still shaking our head as to why such senior actors would agree to say such disturbing dialogues.

I spoke to a senior actor about her views on Qamar, having been in his drama in the past. She told me that Qamar thrived on controversy and initially creates a big one and in turn, pulls people into the drama. His scripts then unfold the big blockbuster moment – which I then told her we were still waiting for. She also said that Qamar was tedious in his dialogues and yes, even the “fruit wala” needed to be a poet – something that is becoming more and more difficult to digest in Mai Manto Nahi Hoon – everyone has a say and it must be said very, very, deeply.

As the drama develops many intertwining stories, its the possibility of a relationship between Farhad and Mehmal that one can imagine would be interesting – and Manto himself will fade into the background as a really tedious bore.

  • ‘Separating is my right’: Hina Rizvi speaks out after parting ways with husband

‘Separating is my right’: Hina Rizvi speaks out after parting ways with husband

When celebrities share personal news, especially the kind involving relationships, the internet tends to do what it does best: spiral into unsolicited opinions and keyboard judgments.

But actress and producer Hina Rizvi is setting the record straight, and she is not here for anyone sensationalizing her situation.

In an Instagram post, Hina confirmed that she and her husband Ammar Ahmed Khan are now separated. And yes, she knows people are already talking. So she addressed it directly and maturely.

“With a heavy heart, I announce that my husband, Ammar Ahmed Khan, and I have separated. I request everyone to respect our privacy. It wasn’t an easy step, and we both need time to further decide what’s best for the future of this relationship. Till then, please don’t judge us, as the dynamics of a marriage are only known to those two individuals who are bonded in it. Thank you.”

She addressed the matter clearly, choosing to share it publicly with care and thoughtfulness.

Still, people did not waste time jumping to conclusions. So Hina posted again, this time addressing drama and fan pages that had already labeled it a divorce.

“A humble request to all drama or fan pages: please don’t make things sensational by calling it a ‘divorce.’ Ammar and I are in a period of separation and need some space in order to decide what’s best for our future,” she said.

In a video posted on her Instagram, Hina also spoke about the reasons behind the separation and called out those leaving harsh comments.

“Since I am a celebrity, I shared this news publicly. But that does not give anyone the right to criticize my life,” she said.

She ended her message by asserting her autonomy and boundaries. “Separating from my husband is my fundamental right,” she wrote, again requesting the public to respect her private life.

Hina Rizvi tied the knot with fellow artist Ammar Ahmed Khan in 2024.

She has appeared in several popular dramas including Tishnagi Dil Ki, Umeed, Hari Hari Churiyaan, Neeli Zinda Hai, Quddusi Sahab Ki Bewah, College Gate, Fairy Tale 1, and Fairy Tale 2. Her portrayal of Aghu Jan in Fairy Tale was particularly appreciated by fans. Her next project, Masafat, is expected to air soon on Hum TV.
