    Corporal punishment allegedly led to the death of a teenage student in Lahore

    Lahore Police has filed a first information report (FIR) against several teachers, for allegedly beating a student to death, ARY News has reported.

    The FIR was registered after the victim’s father, Wajid Hussain, lodged a complaint at Badami Bagh Police Station Lahore. As per the complaint, the 14-year-old Hamza died after being subjected to corporal punishment by his teachers.

    The complaint further states that the father found his son in an unconscious state as teacher Mohammad Majid, along with his colleagues, subjected him to torture. The student was rushed to Mayo Hospital and he died there two days latter.

    As per details, the accused have left the area and the police is trying to locate them.

    TV Anchor’s ‘drunk’ son arrested for harrasing college staff, students

    Four persons were arrested on Saturday on allegations of harassment and threatening employees and students in a college in Islamabad, including the son of a well-known journalist/TV presenter, Dawn News has reported.

    The complaint was lodged by Dr Asad Faiz, the principal of Islamabad Model College for Boys F-11/3 in response to which a case was registered under section 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person otherwise than on grave provocation), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 542 (punishment for wrongful confinement) of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

    Superintendent of Police (SP) Saddar Zone Nosherwan Ali that police received a call that a Vigo was harassing a girl at F-11 Markaz and around 9 am the police received another call that said some people had entered Islamabad Model College for Boys F-11/3 and were beating the staff and students. Police arrested four people from F13. As per the police, the accused people were drunk at the time of the arrest.

    Saudi Arabia launches first-ever women’s football league

    The Saudi football federation has announced the launching of the first edition of a women’s football league at the end of this month.

    The launch of the league is a part of a programme set up by the Saudi Arabia Football Federation in 2017 to support women’s football as women’s sport was long frowned upon in the country.

    Federation chairman Yasser Almisehal said the creation of a women’s league was “an important moment” for the federation.

    Sixteen teams will take part and the matches will take place in three cities — the capital Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam.

    Those who qualify will be able to play in a knockout competition which will be held early next year in Jeddah.

    Pemra orders TV channels to stop airing CCTV footage of Noor in Zahir Jaffer’s house

    The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Sunday has issued a notice to TV channels asking them to stop broadcasting CCTV footage of Noor Mukadam.

    The issued notification states that the “telecast of CCTV footage” of Noor and Zahir has been prohibited under Section 27 of the Pemra Ordinance, 2002. Pemra also warned strict action against the violators.

    The CCTV footage of Noor Mukadam from the house of Zahir Jaffer, the prime suspect in her murder has been also making rounds on social media.

    On November 9, the prosecution in the Noor Mukadam murder case submitted the transcript of the CCTV footage of Zahir’s house in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Ata Rabbani, which shows the events that led to Noor’s brutal murder. The CCTV footage revealed that Noor tried to run away from Zahir Jaffer’s house twice before she was murdered.

    Noor was found murdered at a residence in Islamabad’s upscale Sector F-7/4 on July 20. Her death sparked national outrage, including protests and candlelight vigils across the country.

    Bosses to face fine if they contact their staff after work hours, Portugal passes law

    The Portuguese parliament passed a law on Friday and banned bosses from text messaging and e-mailing employees after working hours in order to improve work-life balance, reports BBC.

    Companies with more than 10 staff members can face fine if they contact their employees outside their contracted hours.

    The new law “right to rest” was introduced in response to an expansion of working from home in the country.

    Under this, companies will allow staff with children to work remotely, the companies also may have to contribute to higher household bills.

    Portugal’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Ana Mendes Godinho, hoped that the enhanced labour protections would attract more foreigners to the country.

    Portugal already has a temporary resident visa scheme to attract entrepreneurs and freelancers.

    In parliament, there were some elements in the bill, for instance, the “right to disconnect”, which allows staff to turn off all work devices out of hours. However, it didn’t get approved.

    Pakistani Nobel laureate and activist Malala Yousafzai tied the knot with Asser Malik in a small intimate nikkah ceremony in Birmingham.

    Malala looked radiant in a mauve shalwar kameez on her big day. The ceremony was attended by Malala’s parents and close friends.

    Malala’s dress was from Pakistani fashion brand Zaaviay. She opted for a raw-silk shalwar kameez, which is available for Rs Rs20,250 with detailed embroidery of kora, dabka, and zari, pairing it with a mauve organza dupatta.

    Malala shared the pictures from the event with the caption, “Today marks a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life.”

    Islamabad High Court questions the killing of stray dogs

    The Islamabad High Court during a hearing against the “brutally murdering” and “poisoning” of stray dogs in Islamabad, questioned the Capital Development Authority and Islamabad Wildlife and Management, Samma has reported. The court issued the chairperson of the wildlife board and CDA in this regard.

    “We have told you to formulate policies instead of barbarically killing stray dogs”, said Justice Athar Minallah, “What happened to that? How can you violate the court’s orders?” he questioned further.

    “The chairperson [of the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board] is directed to satisfy this court that in compliance with this court’s judgment a policy was formulated by the board so that stray dogs are not subjected to unnecessary pain and suffering. The officials shall satisfy this court why proceedings may not be initiated against officials who are responsible for violating this court’s directions,” added Justice Athar Minallah.

    The petition against the killing of stray dogs was filed by Advocate Saira Mehreen Abbasi, stating that practice of killing dogs is still going on in the city despite the court’s order. In January, the CDA imposed a complete ban on shooting stray dogs in the city.

    Provincial Minister of Punjab for Environment Protection Muhammad Rizwan claimed that there has been no smog in Punjab, including Lahore, for the last two years.

    According to the minister, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Lahore which is being observed nowadays is different and the actual rating as per Pakistan Meteorological Department is 134.

    Muhammad Rizwan, while speaking to City 42 News, said that people don’t know how to install air quality monitors. He announced that the administration is starting a plan in which people will be given education and training related to this.

    Furthermore, while maintaining his stance, he stated: “Today our department has recorded AQI 134 mark while Town Hall has 192 and Model Town has 186.”

    After this, the host of the programme said that today (Friday) the city’s quality index was at 337 and previously Lahore was on the list of the most polluted cities.

    To which he replied, ”I can say with full confidence that there has been no smog in the last two years in Punjab, including Lahore.”

    He said that even if there is no fog, the presence of smog was not possible.

    On November 13, Lahore recorded a particulate matter (PM) rating of 364, which classifies the city under the “hazardous” category of air quality.

    However, today Lahore stands at second place after Delhi and has recorded AQI 209 mark while Karachi is at fifth place with the 175 mark.

  • NCOC approves Chinese vaccine for children aged 12 and older

    The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) announced on Thursday that its committee of health experts has approved two Chinese vaccines to be administered to children aged 12 years and older from November 15.

    The Chinese vaccines approved by the committee are Sinopharm and Sinovac.

    “Chinese vaccines Sinopharm and Sinovac have been approved by NCOC Health Expert Committee for administration to children above 12 years of age from 15 November onwards,” NCOC tweeted.

    “Now, these vaccines will also be available in addition to already approved Pfizer for children above 12 yrs,” tweeted NCOC.

    Earlier, Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar, who also heads NCOC, said more than 50 per cent of students between the ages of 12 and 18 have received at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine across the country.
